Per Virginia Department of Education Superintendent’s Memo #053-21:● Online assessment offered to students in grades 3–8 who, due to the COVID-19
pandemic, are receiving all of their instruction in a fully virtual environment and whose parents/guardians will not permit them to come to school to take their SOL tests
● These assessments, called the Virginia Remote Student Progress Tests, will be available for reading and mathematics in grades 3-8 and for science in grades 5 and 8.
● The VRSPT will not be used for state or federal accountability purposes, but rather the results will be available to schools and provided to parents to help parents, teachers, and students better understand areas that are strengths and those where the student could benefit from additional instruction.

● VRSPT is only administered online.
● Regular, read-aloud, and audio formats are available.
● Only one test form exists for each grade and content area.
● Expedited retake opportunities are not available.
● The test is not available for students taking End-of-Course (EOC) assessments, such as Algebra 1, Geometry or Algebra 2.

● Only students who are 100% virtual are eligible for the remote test. The remote test is available for students whose parents have refused the SOL due to covid-19 health concerns.
● Remote tests are not allowed to be administered in a school or school facility.
>Students who do not test:- Face-to-face learners- Hybrid learners- Virtual learners who will be coming in to take SOL tests- Students enrolled in End-of-Course subjects

● Students are encouraged to complete test over one day.
○ Grades 7-8 Mathematics○ Grades 7-8 Reading○ Grade 8 Science
● Remote tests do not include a seal code nor is there a break built in to the test to separate sections.
Test Administration Overview

● Remote tests are not required to be proctored; they may be handled in a similar manner as benchmark and classroom assessments.
● Examiner scripts are not necessary since remote tests are not administered in a standardized test environment.
● Remote tests are intended to be untimed and should be completed within the school day.
● The test is delivered through browser-based TestNav 8, which is available:
○ Monday through Friday○ Between the hours of 7:00 am – 10:00 pm
Note: TestNav 8 is not available for remote testing on weekends.

● Virginia Remote Student Progress Tests (VRSPT) are not SOL tests, but were developed following the SOL test blueprints.
● The length of each VRSPT is listed in the tables below:

Accommodations● Accommodations that are
allowed on SOL tests administered in an online format are allowed on the VRSPT.
● Students’ IEPs, 504 Plans, and English Learner Student Assessment Participation Plans (ELSAPPs) do not require an update in order to take the VRSPT.

AccommodationsAudio Accommodation● All tests administered as part of the VRSPT are available in audio
format using text-to-speech. ● The audio test form must be assigned to the student in
PearsonAccessnext. After signing into the test, the audio tools are located on the right side of the student’s test screen.
● The audio format of the VRSPT is only available for students with an IEP, 504 Plan, or ELSAPP that includes documentation of an audio accommodation.

Test Tickets
● Remote test tickets look identical to SOL test tickets.
● Test tickets for audio and read-aloud accommodations display the audio or read-aloud icons.

● Test tickets will be sent to students via their FCPS Schools Gmail accounts. Due to the information included on test tickets, they may not be emailed to a non-FCPS Schools email address for risk of violating FERPA regulations.
● It is important that each student receives his/her own ticket/credentials and knows to look for his/her name on the test in the upper right corner of the TestNav screen.

Preparing Parents, Teachers, and Students● Parents, teachers, and students should be aware of the VDOE VRSPT

● The site is a resource for information, including how to prepare and practice for the remote test prior to taking the test.
● Allows students to complete a Browser check.
● Provides directions for the VRSPT and link to the browser-based TestNav sign-in screen.

Practice Items
● Any student who is new to Virginia in the last two years or is in third or fourth grade and has never taken an SOL test may benefit by having access to practice items prior to taking the remote test.

Advancing Through the Remote Test● Students must answer each item on the test to advance to the next
item.● The forward arrow will appear greyed out until the student selects an
answer.● Students cannot submit the test without answering all of the items
on the test.● Students are required to respond before advancing because:
○ Schools do not have the ability to unsubmit a test that a student would potentially submit before completing.
○ There are no test statuses applicable to the VRSPT, therefore the only tests that should be in Completed status are those intended to be scored and reported.

Navigating the Remote TestAdvancing through the remote tests will differ depending on the content area of the test.In mathematics, students may only advance forward in the test.● Students may not return to previously answered items.
In reading, students may advance forward or return to previously answered items in the test.● Students may access items within the current passage set

Completing Remote Tests
● Students must answer all items in order to submit their tests.
● Students may exit the test, but they cannot submit the test before completing all of the test items.
● If a student exits the test, PearsonAccessnext will auto-resume the student test allowing them to log back in.

Reading and Science Remote Tests
● All tests will include two sample items.
● There will not be a transition screen between the sample items and the first live item for reading and science tests.
● At the completion of all reading and science tests students will encounter an End of Section screen where they will choose to submit the test or return to previous items.
Grades 4-7 Mathematics Remote Tests● All tests will include two sample items.● A non-calculator transition screen will appear following the
sample items on the grades 4-7 mathematics tests.
○ Non-calculator items for grades 4-7 will appear with the following icon on the screen:

● Students do not have the option to return to previous items.

Troubleshooting
The student should receive an AUDIO test but the headphone icon is not present in the session or on the ticket.

TroubleshootingThe student closed the browser or Exited the test prematurely. ● If a student closes the browser or Exits the test, the test will
automatically Resume in PearsonAccessnext. The student can sign into the test using the same Username and Password.
The student completed a question but the Navigation arrows do not appear.● The student should be reminded that each question requires an answer
before the forward/backward navigation arrows will appear. ● The Student may have attempted to answer the question using a “tool”
other than the Pointer. The student should be reminded that the Pointer must be used to answer the question.
● The student may not have met all the requirements of the test question. The student should be reminded to read the screen carefully and that they must answer the item completely.

The student’s test stops responding. ● The student should be directed to close and restart the browser and
return to the sign-in screen. The test will automatically Resume in PearsonAccessnext, and the student can sign into the test using the same Username and Password.
The student is experiencing technology issues (e.g., loss of Internet connectivity, device issues, etc.) before or during the VRSPT that are not resolved by restarting the browser. ● The family should contact the school for assistance.

What is the error message if a student tries to login and the test is already in Active status?
TroubleshootingWhat do we do if your child’s test becomes frozen or stops responding?
● If a student’s test becomes frozen, the student should be directed to close the browser. Once TestNav is notified that the browser was closed, the test will go into Resumed status. At that time, the student should be able to log back in and complete testing.
