It was my 21st birthday and I woke up very early. The sun was shining and birds were singing. I couldhear my mum making breakfast in the kitchen.

I jumped out of bed, got dressed and wentdownstairs. My mum gave me a big birthday hug andtold me to sit at the table. Then she served me the bestbreakfast of my life. As I was eating, my dad came intothe kitchen. It seemed strange, but he didn’t wish me ahappy birthday.

After my dad had finished eating, he asked me ifI wanted a ride to work. I said sure and I followedhim out of the house. As the garage door wasopening, I realised that it wasn’t our old Ford parkedin the garage. Instead, there was a bright redconvertible. I stood with my mouth hanging open. Then, my mum and dad were standing behind mewishing me a happy birthday. The shiny new carwas mine.

I hugged my mum and dad and after I hadcalmed down a bit, I took them for a ride. As thewind was blowing through my hair, I kept thinkingthat this was the happiest day of my life.

Hi! How are you? It was great to get your letter. You asked me if I’ve been doing anything excitinglately. Well, I went to a rock concert on Friday – itwas totally amazing!

It was at the new stadium and it was by a rockgroup called Motorway – maybe you’ve heard ofthem? The tickets were pretty expensive at í50, but Ithink it was worth it.

There was a really good atmosphere and theplace was packed. The sound system was excellentand the band gave a great performance, singing allof my favourite songs.

I was a little disappointed that I was far awayfrom the stage.

Anyway, I still had one of the best nights of mylife. If you ever have the opportunity to see themlive, you really must go. Have you heard their newCD? Write soon and tell me what you think of it.Take care,Kim

UNIT 2

By now, most of us have heard of ‘global warming’. Indeed, whenever the weather seems to be unseasonably hot, cold, wet or dry, our newspapers are filled with terrible warningsabout global warming. In her new book, The Global Scare,Mary Plinkerton attempts to separate the facts from thefiction concerning climatic change. It is not an easy thing to do. For instance, as Plinkerton pointsout, while scientists generally agree that global temperaturesare increasing, experts are still arguing about the causes ofthis increase. For example, there are scientists who believeglobal warming is just part of a natural cycle, pointing totemperature changes in centuries past to support theirarguments. Some even go so far as to suggest that in thevery near future the Earth will probably get a lot colder again. What the experts are agreed on, according to Plinkerton, isthe fact that temperatures have already gone up by almostone degree in the last hundred years and most of them agreethat this trend will continue – at least in the immediate future. What nobody can be sure of is just how much highertemperatures will go. At the moment the fear is that, if wedon’t change our ways, then temperatures could rise by asmuch as five degrees in the next hundred years. However, asPlinkerton is careful to explain, these estimates will onlybecome more accurate as more information becomesavailable. So, what does Plinkerton think we can do about it?Unfortunately, this is where I found her book a bit of adisappointment. A lot of the information in this chapter ofthe book is very technical and complicated, but here andthere she does have some common sense, and perhaps

rather obvious, suggestions. As she says, we need to cutdown on the amount of energy we use and she argues thatwe can all do this by turning electrical equipment off whenwe are not using it and putting on a sweater when we feelcold, instead of turning the heating up. Paying attention tosuch simple details can save a remarkable amount ofenergy. Finally, and this is the part of the book I found the mostfascinating, Plinkerton discusses the hidden energy costsof the food we eat. It seems that many food suppliers arecontributing to global warming because so much of thefood we eat these days travels huge distances before itends up on our tables. When you think that a lot of this foodis transported by air so that it reaches the supermarkets inas fresh a condition as possible, then you can begin tounderstand the seriousness of the problem. As Plinkertonsays, we can all help reduce the amount of energy that iswasted if we only buy food that is produced locally. It isfresher, healthier, probably cheaper, and if we all buy localproducts we will support our local farming community aswell. I’m off to my local market right now. Goodbye.

Tutor: Good afternoon, everybody. I am delighted to behere today to talk to you about the naturephotography courses that I teach. I would like to startby giving you some idea of what you can expect tolearn on the short, four-week course, which is themost popular course that we offer.

As I said, the course lasts just four weeks and focuseson taking pictures of wild plants, or perhaps I shouldsay wild flowers, as it is the flowers which are theimportant part of any wild plant photography. For thatreason, we only run courses from April untilSeptember – there simply aren’t enough flowers inwinter! This year, the first course starts on the secondof April. That’s on a Monday, of course.

Tapescripts

27

The course is open to both amateur and professionalphotographers over the age of eighteen. Although wehave run separate courses for amateurs andprofessionals in the past, we have found that mostpeople prefer a course where professionals andamateurs work and learn together. I should alsoexplain that the reason you have to be eighteen is inorder to use our laboratories.

As far as equipment is concerned, we encourageparticipants to use their own cameras as much aspossible. Photographers feel at ease with their ownequipment and this in turn means that you are morelikely to get good results. Of course, we want you tolearn as much as you can, so the cost of hiringspecial equipment, when it is needed, is included inthe course fee of í200.

The chance to use the latest photographic equipmentis not all you get for your í200! Besides tuition, thefee also includes the cost of transport to the parksand gardens where we do our field work. Please notethat the fee does not include food or otherrefreshments. We leave it up to you to make your owneating arrangements. I should point out thatexcellent, reasonably-priced meals are available inthe college restaurants and cafeterias. Now I wouldlike to briefly mention our new course ... (fade)

Voice of another radio presenter: Staying safe is not rocketscience. It is all about common sense and following somebasic guidelines:

Whether you share a flat or live on your own, make sure thatyou always lock the doors and close the windows when yougo out.

In halls of residence be careful who follows you into thebuilding. Always lock your bedroom door, even when youare in another part of the building. After a night out, don’t walk home alone. Stay over withfriends, walk in groups or take a taxi. If you have to go backhome on your own make sure that you walk in well-lit areasand carry a mobile phone with you.

Avoid using cash-machines at night.

Keep your card details, pin numbers and cheque books ina safe place at home. Do not carry them with you.

Finally, mark your property with your initials and ID number. In case your property is stolen, the police can identify it andreturn it to you.

Remember that staying safe is simple.Use your common sense. Don’t make yourself a victim.

Sheila:Hmmm, I'm sure we'll do both, but to tell you thetruth, I really want to learn about the history and theculture of the area.

Janet: Well, you've certainly come to the right place! Pictouhas an amazing history and all Pictonians are veryproud of their rich culture. And I just rememberedthat next week the Hector Festival gets underway.

Sheila: The Hector Festival? What's that?Janet: It's a five-day festival that's held once a year to

celebrate Pictou's Celtic heritage. There's lots ofgreat events like picnics, barbeques, dances andmusical events. Every year there are at least twoterrific concerts in the park.

Sheila:Wow! That all sounds very interesting. Why is thefestival called the Hector Festival?

Janet: Good question. Way back in 1773, the first Scottishsettlers arrived here in Pictou on a boat called theShip Hector and ever since 1987, we've been havingthe festival to remember what those peopleachieved. This year, 2006, should be the bestfestival ever as it's celebrating its 20th anniversary.

Sheila:So tell me more about the concerts.Janet: Oh, the concerts are fantastic! They're always held

outdoors and you can see lots of Scottish dancingand singing. Oh, and of course you'll hear lots ofbagpipe music!

Sheila:Really! That will certainly be a new experience forme.

Janet: And probably one you'll never forget as well. Peoplesay you either love that kind of music or hate it.

Sheila:Well, I'm sure I'm going to love it. Are the entrancefees expensive for the events?

Janet: No, actually they're very reasonable. If I remembercorrectly, last year adult tickets were about $27.50.

Sheila:Aren't there special rates for students?Janet: Yes, of course. As I recall students and seniors had

to pay about $25.50 for their tickets.Sheila:Well, that certainly sounds reasonable for such great

entertainment.Janet: Yes, I agree and some of the events don't cost
