Remember to celebrate milestones as you prepare for the road ahead.” Nelson Mandela
The weekend of Fall Council I will be attending my 50th school class reunion. What a milestone to celebrate.
Does your club have a historian to keep a record of your milestones? Scrapbooks and pictures are such fun to review. On your club’s anniversary why not pull out all those keepsakes and have a night of reminiscing. That would be a fun way to educate newer members on what your club is all about.
Hello Pilots, I am looking forward to seeing all of you at Fall Council!September is Founder’s Month! Put your Founders Day plan into action. Set up a display of PI information
and make plans with your club to participate in a community service project for the year. Please click the link to read about the Founders Day Program.

I joined the Luncheon Pilot Club of Chesapeake after I retired from education in 2011.I was looking for an organization that offered new friendships and service to thecommunity. Pilot has given me both. I have loved my eight years as a pilot. I haveserved as a Director, Recording Secretary, President-Elect, President (twice) andLeadership Division chair. I have met many new friends, not only in Chesapeake butalso throughout the state. I feel blessed to be a part of such a wonderful group ofhardworking ladies who always are there for you and love to serve.

Despite the threat of Hurricane Florence and the closing of DCC due to the weather
predictions, the September 14, 2018 Caring for the Caregiver Workshop, sponsored by
the Luncheon Pilot Club of Danville, was a resounding success with over 120 people in
attendance.
Hosted by DCC, the free Workshop was appropriate for those who care for children or
adults with a variety of cognitive or physical disabilities and disorders, both family and
professional. Free on-site and off-site/in home respite care was available. Continental
breakfast and lunch were served.
Caregiver Workshop - Caring for the Caregiver - A Huge Success
Nationally acclaimed AARP speaker and author of Juggling, Life, Work and Caregiving, Amy Goyer, spoke via tele-
conferencing and was able to interact with the attendees and answer their many questions. Goyer, an author,
speaker and consultant specializing in aging and families, including caregiving, grandparenting and multi-generational
issues. She has authored numerous publications and is a recognized media authority. Goyer also serves as AARP’s
national family and caregiving expert. The attendees received a free copy of Goyer’s book in addition to a goodie bag
filled with information on all topics and personal items.
Goyer shared, “Like so many other family caregivers, I often place my own care on the back burner because I’m
focused on the immediate needs of those I’m caring for. But that self-neglect eventually catches up with me —
sometimes dramatically,” Goyer said. “I juggle two homes, a long-distance relationship, work and caregiving. It’s a
crazy life! I have learned a great deal along the way.”
The workshop also featured Monica Karavanic, Director of Residential, The Arc of Southside presenting,
“Empowering Those Served;” Dr. Connie Fletcher-Whitlow, Ph.D., Clinical Psychologist Specialist, shared her
expertise about “Caregiver Stress and How to Relieve it;” and, Karen Cotta, Music Therapist, provided lively
interactive musical activities in “Music & Mindfulness.”
Additionally, there was a session for attendees to ask questions of a Resource Panel of specialists in the field to
provide useful tools to help caregivers while learning how to care for themselves.
The response from the attendees was remarkable. When completing the evaluation forms, all attendees, replied that
the Workshop was “Excellent,” and when asked if it should be held again, all responded, ”Yes, Absolutely.”
Completing another question, all, both family caregivers and professional, left with more knowledge, hope and tools
then they had prior to attending.
Anita White, Luncheon Pilot Club of Danville member and Caregiver Workshop Chair said, “After retiring as a Colonel
from the US Army to come back to Danville to care for my parents and brother, I realized that there was such a need
for a workshop for caregivers, both family and professional. This was my vision and with Club participation and
wonderful sponsors and partners, we succeeded in making my vision a reality.”
