The beginning

When the Virginia Department of Trans-portation (VDOT) determined that it wastime to replace the older display walloutfitted with television monitors andlamp-lit cubes, it enlisted the services ofAECOM, a global provider of professionaltechnical and management support serv-ices, as its information technology pro-gram manager. After a thoroughtechnology assessment and considera-tion of several manufacturers, VDOTselected Barco’s OVL-715 SXGA+ DLP LED-lit projection modules, a TransForm Avideo wall control and Control RoomManagement (CMS) software. The result:a crystal clear, virtually seamless com-mon operational picture at the heart of afully operational control room solution.

Big, bold and brilliant

As the country’s third-largest state-main-tained highway system, VDOT is respon-sible for building, maintaining andoperating Virginia’s entire transportationnetwork. The new Barco wall providesthe real estate to enable VDOT’s opera-tors to see everything in one snapshotview, equipping them with more data tomake better-informed decisions andrespond effectively during roadway inci-dents and emergencies. The most signif-icant improvement over the agency’sprevious system is the increase in bril-liant colors displayed by the video wall’sLEDs. The video feeds are significantlybrighter, depicting images with improvedcontrast to enhance details for greatervisibility. Even with VDOT’s legacy CCTVcameras, the quality of graphics andvideo has improved considerably thanksto Barco’s LED illumination.

Flexibility and collaboration

The video wall monitors feeds from 44CCTV inputs and a variety of dynamic con-trol room graphics – such as data flowmaps, reversible roadway graphics, bridge and tunnel choke points – allow-ing the control room supervisor to flipscreens to the wall with the click of amouse. Screen layouts are driven byoperations managers who can scale, rearrange, change screen preferencesand enhance views with computergraphics. VDOT can also share video anddata with city and county transportationagencies, the Virginia State Police andlocal Emergency Management Servicesto coordinate efforts in the event of aregional crisis.

“When we considered options for manu-facturers, we focused on excellent prod-uct quality, cost-effectiveness, customerservice and warranty,” commentedRobert (Chris) Mills, Project Manager forAECOM. “Company history and proventrack record were also of paramountimportance. Barco fulfilled the project’sspecifications and requirements.”

Bright, green and long-lasting

Barco's 70” OVL-715 LED-lit projectionvideo wall is the brightest on the market, utilizing an advanced heat managementsystem based on liquid cooling technolo-gy, which enables users to boost thewall’s brightness up to 20 percent with-out shortening its lifetime. The video wallis rated for 80,000 hours of continuousoperation in eco-mode. TransForm Aoffers easy, built-in integration of digitaland analog video and data sources toallow users to place windows of any sizeanywhere on the video wall, without anycompromise on quality. Barco’s CMS-200software is an advanced control roommanagement suite that enables opera-tors and decision-makers to easily accessinformation to connect, control and con-figure how it is displayed, and to collabo-rate in the most efficient way.
