NB-1794 Sd/- Dr. Rajinder Khajuria, KAS General Manager (Admn) S-002 Mirwaiz aghast over disallowing prayers at Jamia Masjid for 17 th Friday Seeks intervention of Islamic countries, UN Srinagar, Nov 4: Chairman of Hurriyat Conference (M) Mirwaiz Umar Farooq has hit out at “ruling regime” for sealing the historic Jamia Masjid for the 17th week in a row and disallowing people from offering congregational Friday prayers there. In a statement, Mirwaiz, who is under continuous house arrest, said “the ruling class has reached a point in their indifference to the people, their culture and religion. Locking Jamia Masjid and preventing people from offering Friday prayers doesn't seem to register on their hearts and minds any more. They have become stone hearted, irredeemable. The total apathy of the rulers towards the ruled reflects a very grim and disturbing situation that people are face to face with.” Elaborating, Mirwaiz said, “the ruling regime is duty bound to hold itself accountable for protecting the people and be responsive and respectful of their religious senti- ments as it is these very people they claim who have elected them and whom they represent.” Appealing to the Islamic countries, the United Nations, and international human rights bodies “to help stop violations of religious rights” of the people of Kashmir, Mirwaiz urged them to play a role in the resolution of the vexed Kash- mir dispute in accordance with the wishes and aspirations of the people. Meanwhile, Hurriyat (M) spokesperson in a statement said a delegation of Hurriyat leaders including Mushtaq Ahmad Sofi and Hilal Ahmad visited Jenab Sahab Soura shrine and offered Friday congregational prayers there. “Addressing a public gather- ing amid pro-Azadi and pro-Islam slogans, the leaders denounced the sealing of Jamia Masjid Srinagar, disallowing of Friday congrega- tional prayers at the masjid for 17 consecutive weeks, arrest and house arrest of the APHC Chair- man, Mirwaiz Muhammad Umar Farooq and other resistance lead- ers, desecration of Jenab Sahab shrine, and brutal state terror- ism unleashed by the government forces on the civilian population,” the spokesperson said. Urs Hazrat Baba Dawood Khaki (RA) observed Srinagar, Nov 4: The annual Urs of Hazrat Sheikh Baba Dawood Khaki (RA) was observed in Srinagar with religious fervor and enthusiasm. The main func- tion in this regard was held at Maqdoom Sahib (RA) Shrine. Hazrat Sheikh Baba Dawood Khaki (RA) was engaged in the royal services, which he later gave up and became a disciple of Sheikh Hamza Makhdoom (RA). He was a prolific writer and to his credit has many works of repute including Virdul Murideen, Dastoorul Sali- keen, Qasida Jalalia, Qasida Lamhiya and Virdul Muri- deen which is still recited in the shrines and masjids of Kashmir. It is a compila- tion of 1362 verses in honour (manaqib) of his spiritual preceptor Hazrat Mehboob- ul-Alam Sheikh Hamza Mak- doom (RA). Sheikh Dawood Khaki (RA) is also popularly remembered as Imam Azam- i-Sani in Kashmir. He travelled far and wide in Kashmir, relieving people of evils and myths. He became instrumental in guiding thousands to the stages of spiritual domain and had huge number of fol- lowers. He breathed his last on 3rd Safar 994 Hijri (1585 AD). Besides, Sheikh Baba Dawood Khaki (RA), Urs of Sheikh Naseer-u-Deen Suharwady (RA) was also observed with enthusiasm today at Saida Kadal. Scores of devotees including women and children, paid obeisance and offered special prayers at these shrines, where reli- gious scholars highlighted contributions of these mystic saints and threw light on different aspects of their life. Viper appears at Jawahar Nagar, creates panic Captured, released in natural habitat Srinagar, Nov 4: Panic gripped Jawahar Nagar locality in city centre here on Friday when a viper appeared in the area. However, the authorities informed Wildlife SOS Rescue team which captured the viper and later released it in its natural habitat. Kartick Satyanarayan, Co- founder of Wildlife SOS said an emergency call from the Wildlife Department alerted the Wildlife SOS Rescue team to the presence of a snake at Jawahar Nagar. “The sight of a snake crawling up into a rain pipe outside their house left the family in a state of shock. Fearing for their safety, they immediately contacted the Wildlife Department, who in turn reported the incident to Wildlife SOS,” Satyanarayan said in a statement. A two member rescue team, led by Aaliya Mir from Wildlife SOS rushed to the spot and after ensur- ing that the family was at a safe dis- tance from their reptilian visitor, carried out the rescue operation. “It took almost 30 minutes for the team to carefully extricate the snake out from the pipe. It was a dangerous operation as the Levan- tine viper is highly venomous, requiring us to take precautionary measures. As the residents were apprehensive of the possible pres- ence of more snakes in the area, we decided to scan the entire neigh- bourhood to allay their fears. There is an abandoned factory nearby and it was possible that being a secluded area, it could have become a refuge for more snakes,” said Aaliya Mir, Wildlife SOS Manager & Education Officer. She said the viper was identi- fied as a Levantine Viper (Micro- viperalebetina) which is locally known as ‘gunas’. “This par- ticular snake is an uncommon venomous viper species found in parts of Kashmir, Pakistan, Middle East and North Africa. After careful examination, the snake was deemed fit and released back into its natural habitat,” Aaliya said. “This exquisite viper is known to survive in elevations between 900-2100 metres in India. They feed mainly on small mammals, liz- ards, birds and their eggs. Though slow moving, they are capable of fast strikes when provoked and will give out a warning hiss before striking. Being a venomous snake, we had to be extremely careful while conducting the rescue in order to avoid any unnecessary casualties,” Kartick Satyanaray- an, said.
