IntroductionApril9th,2017,marksthe100thanniversaryoftheBattleofVimyRidge.ThisanniversarywillcelebrateaFirstWorldWarbattlethatpavedthewaytoanAlliedvictory,andhelpedsolidifyCanadaasanindependentnation.Therearemanywaysinwhichindividualscanbeinvolvedinthiscelebration.Below,youwillfindactivitiesrangingfromphysicaleducationtoart,whichyoumayconductinyourclassessothatyouandyourstudentscanparticipateinthismomentousevent.Inadditiontoclassroomresources,studentsandschoolsarealsoprovidedwithinformationonhowtheycanengageinthematerialoutsideofclasstime,aswellasworktowardsreceivingtheirtheDukeofEdinburghAward.TheAwardconceptisoneofindividualchallenge,tonurtureinnerpride,andempoweryoungleaders.TheAwardoffersallCanadianyouthbetweentheagesof14-25,abalanced,non-competitiveprogrammeofextracurricularactivitiesthatencouragespersonaldiscovery,growth,self-reliance,perseverance,andservicetothecommunity.Inadditiontotheclassroomandawardcomponents,schoolsalsohavetheopportunitytoengageintwonationalvirtualevents:the100thAnniversaryvirtualceremony(April6th,2017)andtheNationalVirtualRemembranceDayceremony(weekofNovember11th).Thisresourcewasdevelopedaspartofanationalyouthengagementstrategybythefollowingpartners:CentreforGlobalEducation,TakingITGlobal,theDukeofEdinburghAward&theAlbertaDistanceLearningCentre.Ifyouhaveanyquestionsaboutthisresourceorhowyoucantakepartinthenationalvirtualceremonies,youmaycontactJessicaMatthewsfromTakingITGlobal([email protected]).

HowtoGetStartedThisresourcehasbeendevelopedforyourindependentusewithinyourclassrooms.Theactivitiesbelowhavebeencreatedforteacherstoimplementwithintheirlessonsandsupplementexistingcurriculum.Thereareactivitiesforthefollowingsubjects:PhysicalEducation,Math,Science,SocialStudies,ArtandEnglish.TheseactivitieswillallowforyouandyourstudentstoengageinthecentennialcelebrationoftheBattleofVimyRidge.IfparticipatinginthevirtualvideoconferencehostedbytheCentreforGlobalEducation,theseactivitiesarenotarequirement,yetarehighlyrecommendedforpreparingyourstudentsforthisevent.
