Liubarto bridge

Dainavos g. 5

At first glance, Vilnius may not look like the type of place that’s full of eye-catching street art. However, if you know where to go, you’re bound to find urban murals by Millo, Os Gemeos, Mobstr, and many others. One of the local street art paintings has even been making rounds in the international media.

The town’s street art often includes intricate details that play with lines and geometric forms, or messages that fit well with the building or area surrounding a given work of street art. Grab this map and discover the work of locals and visiting artists. Conveniently located in the central town, they’re all easy to visit on foot.

In Greek mythology, the Titan At-

las was tasked with holding the sky

on his shoulders. While in architec-

ture, an atlas is a support structure

sculpted in the form of a man, often

used in place of a column. Two of

them by Lithuania’s Ernest Zacha-

revic now hold the western end of

Liubartas’ bridge in place.

This work by Spanish artist Aryz came

to be thanks to the Vilnius Street Art

Festival, which has brought many

world-renowned names to town. Aryz

is famous for his carefully planned

street art paintings. Here, the hors-

es immediately catch the eye, but

there’s much more detail to the mural

worth carefully observing.

Kražių g. 7

V. Mykolaičio-Putino g. 5

Gedimino pr. 29A

Manchester’s Tank Petrol is known

for his portraits of women, one of

which appeared in town after the

Vilnius Street Art Festival. Both the

woman and the eagle on her right

slowly vanish, as if becoming free.

The wall is ideal for the piece - one

of Vilnius’ oldest prisons is on the

other side.

A work by Polish graphic artist Ma-

riusz Waras, known in the street art

world as M-City. True to his style,

the piece on Vilnius’ Palace of Trade

Unions plays on depth and form with

black and white colours, echoing an

industrial style.

Local artist Paulė Bocculaitė painted Frida just opposite the sculpture of

Lithuanian writer Žemaitė. As Ms Boccu-

laitė herself put it, if the two would have ever met in real life, Frida would inquire

as to why Žemaitė’s wearing a headscarf, the Lithuanian’s response would centre

around identity, and from that moment

on they’d have plenty to talk about.

6. ADOMAS ŽUDYS

A. Juozapavičiaus g. 7

Konstitucijos pr. 23

The Lithuanian artist Adomas Žudys experiments with combining digital

and street art. This work was com-

missioned by Vidmantas Martikonis

as a new and unique addition to his

private collection - a portrait cre-

ated with digital technology, trans-

ported onto a building.

Lithuanian architect Ignas Lukaus-

kas was tasked with bringing the

building of the Lithuanian Parlia-

ment’s garage to life, and suggested

that it should become a waterfall.

The idea was carried out at the 2016

Vilnius Street Art Fest. You can view

this piece up close by walking down

Žvejų Street or from afar, standing on Žygimantų Street on the opposite bank of the river.

8. ASYLUMRinktinės g. 2

The local street artist Asylum cre-

ated this work on a building that will

soon be demolished. However, it’s

uniquely tied to his life - he squatted

in this same building with a group

of artists. Although they didn’t live

there permanently, it had a signifi-

cant impact on the creative lives of

the group.

9. JURGIS TARABILDAOdminių g. 8

One of the first works that appeared

in town during the Vilnius Street

Art Festival still sits on an Odminių Street’s wall. Lithuanian artist Jurgis

Tarabilda says that streets can be-

come a free art gallery and this piece

is here to demonstrate that a paint-

ing on a city wall isn’t necessarily the

work of vandals.

10. COLLECTIVE WORK

Šv. Ignoto g. 4

K. Kalinausko g. 3

The walls surrounding the square

that houses a statue of Frank Zappa

are lined with street art in a variety

of styles and colours. As you stand

facing the statue, make sure to also

head in the direction of the building

on your right to check out its walls.

This piece decorates the entrance

to the Pasaka cinema, who also

commissioned it. The rather sinis-

ter-looking characters of Alice in

Wonderland have their eyes on who-

ever is coming through the cinema’s

door.

13. AEON

12. MARLA SINGER

Olimpiečių g.

Užupio g. 2A

The end of Olimpiečių Street close to Žirmūnų Bridge houses a rowing centre. There’s a pathway connect-

ing the centre to the riverbank used

to carry canoes. It is here, right by

the river, that you’ll find Aeon’s por-

traits of women among many ev-

er-changing tags.

It’s only fitting that the Bohemian

district of Užupis should host this work by Lithuanian artist and pho-

tographer Marla Singer. Borrowing

motifs from Eugène Delacroix’s Lady

Liberty Leading the People, the work

is a call to legalise cannabis.

14. AUŠRA BAGOČIŪNAITĖ

Kauno g. 1

Arklių g. 5

This piece by Lithuanian artist and

director Aušra Bagočiūnaitė depicts people going to see a play at a the-

atre. Joining them are the play’s

characters, who look a lot like pup-

pets - no wonder, because the Vilnius

Puppet Theatre Lėlė is just on the left.

The street artist duo from Warsaw

created this painting on this empty

Kauno Street wall - a firewall that

was supposed to separate two adja-

cent buildings. The second building

was never constructed, leaving a

perfect canvas for street art.

17. OS GEMEOS

16. MILLO

Pylimo g. 60

Pylimo g. 56

The duo from São Paulo are among

the top names in street art. They

dropped by during the Vilnius Street

Art Festival to pay respect to their

Lithuanian grandfather, who’s pic-

tured sitting in the palm of a giant in

this mural.

The Italian artist Millo is said to usu-

ally depict urban scenes - cities and

people within them. His work on the

building opposite Halės Market is no exception. The town that sprung up

on one of the neighbourhood’s most

prominent walls is teeming with life.

19. SEIKON, KRIK KONG, SZYMA

18. MINDAUGAS BONANU, DOMINYKAS ČEČKAUSKAS

Drujos g.

Pylimo g. 66

It is fair to say that this work of street

art is a true local superstar. Original-

ly, Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin

shared a kiss, but the initial painting

was vandalised and later changed.

You may have seen it in the New York

Times or in one of many other inter-

national media outlets, but seeing it

live is well worth your time, too.

The corner of Drujos and Aušros

Vartų streets hosts three distinct works by Polish artists, which match

incredibly well. Krik Kong is the au-

thor of the middle piece and the bald

guy you see in his work is a recurring

character. To the right are Seikon’s

precise lines, and Szyman’s work is

the first on the left.

21. OPEN GALLERY

20. MOBSTR

Vytenio g. 50

Pelesos g. 1

Open Gallery is a project by the Art

Factory LOFTAS - the town’s hippest

event space and cultural centre.

The interdisciplinary project brings

together many forms of urban ex-

pression in the industrial district of

Naujamiestis, including street art

and visual installations.

Mobstr is a true poet among street

artists. The anonymous London-

er is known for his short and per-

fectly-timed phrases that pop-up

around the world. In Vilnius, he cre-

ated a play on Andy Warhol’s quote,

which now sits on the walls of what

used to be the town’s taxi depot.
