Summer Hydration

Keeping hydrated while exercising during the summer months is essential to prevent potential health issues and to get the most out of your workout. When you sweat, your body not only sheds excess water to keep you cool, but also loses electrolytes and salts that your body needs to function.

Avoid sugary drinks or beverages with high sodium, such as soda, when you are working out. Your body must digest these to break down the sugars, which means it takes longer to get into your system. Plus, digesting substances like sodium takes water out of your body, so you may actually wind up more dehydrated in spite of taking in liquid. This is especially relevant for those exercising with younger family members who may not like the taste of water.

Talk to your doctor or a VillaSport trainer about choosing the right sports drink for you and your family.

M E M B E R S U C C E S S S T O R Y

By Amanda Bertoniere

I woke up one day in June 2011 and thought “enough is enough.” I had just had my second baby and was weighing in at 205 lbs. I was tired all the time and couldn’t focus on the important things in life. I took one look at my baby and pre-teen daughter and realized they needed a mother who was checked in, not out.

To get myself back in the gym, I began training with personal trainer Kelley Milsap. I watched what I ate, and by October, I had lost 20 lbs. But something was missing, as I still felt miserable with no energy and a mind that frequently thought about eating that doughnut. The weight went back on by January 2012.

My 2012 New Year’s resolution was to get healthy and lose weight, so I registered with my husband for the Spring Lose to Win Challenge. I also enrolled in the 12-week Get Lean Boot Camp with personal trainer Crystal Piercy. She emphasized the importance of nutrition.

The combined motivation and education from Crystal and Kelley catapulted me on my journey. I now understand why I felt sluggish in spite of my workout efforts. With Crystal’s help, I modified my diet and now choose foods that fit into my nutrition goals. Planning is the key. I plan my meals each week and shop for just those meals. I allow myself a cheat day and I don’t beat myself up if I fall off the wagon. I have lost 17 lbs. since the start of the Lose to Win Challenge. The most impressive results are the changes in my body. My body fat percentage has gone from 40% to 26% and I am down a total of 27 inches. Most importantly, I feel better than I ever have.

My husband has been supportive and my family is open to trying new recipes, and I have an absolutely wonderful training team and Get Lean workout buddies at VillaSport who keep me motivated. My advice is to start today with one small change, then another and before you know it, you are running that marathon you want, losing those last 10 pounds, hiking Pikes Peak or any other goal you have in life. Just keep moving!
