Mayor’s Message

It’s been a month of change. Albertans elected a new Alberta Government seeing NDP with a majority and Wild Rose the opposition. Our congratulations to the newly elected Little Bow riding Wild Rose MLA Dave Schneider and very special thanks to our outgoing MLA Ian Donavan. We will continue to work with the Alberta Government in improving at everything we and they do. Together we will continue to listen, learn and work with purpose with minimum bureaucracy.

Welcome to our new RCMP Sergeant, TOM HOWELL, stationed at the Picture Butte detachment. RCMP visits Nobleford on a regular daily basis, you may have noted the increased presence of Radar on Highway avenue, speeding can be expensive and dangerous, please slow down. The new school playground if now in operation. Nobleford contributed $22,000 to the Nobleford School Parent Association to help them secure a provincial grant. Thank you to the association for their commitment and community partnership. Nobleford is known for its many parks, paved pathways and outdoor recreation facilities. The spray Park is scheduled to open by June 24, the Climbing wall in Rubie and spinning tower in Centennial are waiting for you.

The P5 residential subdivision is progressing nicely and we should have pavement in place by July with new homes being built this fall. The RV sewage dump site is closed during P5 construction and will be relocated to 14 street adjacent to the RV storage compound.

Thank you to Grade 11 & 12 students for their assistance with spring yard clean up. The Village donated $500 to the Grad Class. On behalf of Village Council, please take time to enjoy Nobleford, and we will see you on August 8 for Heritage day celebrations. Don McDowell

In the dictionary we find that the meaning for the word

“Gossip” is “idle chat, especially about other people.”

This does not sound to be such a bad thing but so often

those idle words that are passed around hurt deeply and can

scar a person for life. In the bible we read “a talebearer

(gossiper) revealeth secrets; but he that is of a faithful spirit

concealeth the matter.” Proverbs 11:13, “A perverse man

saveth strife; and a whisperer separateth chief friends.”

Proverbs 16:28. Remember, those who gossip to you will gossip of you and remember that gossip needn’t be false to be evil,

there’s a lot of truth that should not be passed around. Sundays 10:00 AM - Worship Service with Pastor Bob Derrick - Sunday School during the Worship Service - Coffee hour following the service Special Services - Father’s Day—June 21, 10:00 AM Bible Study: Sunday morning at 11:15 AM every week at the church. The Tuesday morning bible study group will not be meeting during the summer months. Minutes to Win It Games Night: Sunday evening, June 7 at 7:00 PM at the church. Everyone welcome. This will be the last

Games Night until the fall. On Sunday morning, April 12, Rev. John Kapteyn, the Executive Secretary of the Reformed Church of Canada, was the guest

speaker at the morning worship service. A time of fellowship and a soup and bun luncheon was held after the service. Congratulations: To Gerrick Parsons on his graduation from the Lethbridge Community College with a diploma in Practical Nursing (RPN). To Kale Dorchak on his graduation with honours from the Lethbridge Community College with a certificate in Health Care

Aid.(HCA). To Brooks Groenenboom on her graduation from Noble Central School. To Kyle Groenenboom on his graduation from St. Catherines School in Picture Butte. To all other students graduating from various high schools, colleges and universities. We wish each of you success and God’s guidance in all your future endeavors. July 1, Canada Day. Let us show thankful hearts for living in a country where there is freedom and liberty and where dreams can

become reality. Stand up and be proud to be Canadian.

The Nobleford Legion #257, established in the 1950's by War veterans returning home has given up its charter. The Last order of Business for the legion was to write a

$30,000 cheque to the Village of Nobleford to establish a Legacy fund for some type of project in the Community that would keep the Legions memory ever present in Nobleford

" A LEGACY".

The Village of Nobleford is going to match that $30,000.

under Policy #02-22, Not-for-Profit Initiatives Funding, and work with the former Legion members and Nobleford Socie-ties to secure a Provincial CFEP or CIP grant for $60,000. The details of what this estimated $120,000 project will be is going to be discussed with the Community and plans are

Christian Reformed Church Submitted by Patricia Konynenbelt www.noblefordcrc.com Sunday Services – 10:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. – Pastor Pete VanderBeek Pre-school and Nursery Sunday School – meet dur ing the a.m. service YPS and Young Adults – Sunday evenings for either Bible Study or Social The season of summer has arrived with the lengthening of days when one can enjoy the outdoors and witness the changes

in nature—from the drab colors of winter to the rich green colors of the fully leafed trees and well groomed lawns to the

colorful blooming flowers that will soon grace our yards. Each morning the song birds can be heard greeting the morn as

the sun rises with the promise of a beautiful day. Yes, there will be days when we will welcome the needed rain so that the

plants, the seeded farmlands, the lawns and pasture lands will thrive. For as the soil makes the sprout come up and a garden

causes seeds to grow, so the Sovereign Lord will make righteousness and praise spring up before all nations.—Isa.

61:11. Church programs have come to an end for the summer months except for the planning of summer camps for the GEMS and

CADET clubs. The young boys and girls look forward to a time of camping and participating in the planned activities that

allow them to enjoy the outdoors. Congratulations to Jeremy and Kristi Hummel with the birth of their son, Brandon Lucas on Mar. 31st. A brother of

Morgan, Benjamin and Claire. Congratulations also to Dylan and Shelby Procee with the birth of their second son,

Camden, John, on May 7th. A brother for Carter. God gives us children for a time To love them and to show them how To train them in His way To follow and obey Sper On June 13th Jordan Van Hierden and Eline van der Kooij will be united in marriage. “Marriage thrives in a climate of love

and respect.” Just a reminder that the Annual Burger Bash is scheduled for June 20th (on the church grounds). Everyone is invited to

attend and enjoy a time of fellowship, games and food. Sunday, June 21st is Father’s Day. Honor your father with love and respect on his day. Daily Vacation Bible School—July 27-31—plans are well underway for this annual event. Mark your calendars as the

children enjoy this time of learning about God and also meeting with their friends. Pastor VanderBeeks tenure as Interim Pastor for our congregation is coming to a close. We pray for God’s blessings as he

prepares to leave Nobleford and awaits a call to serve another congregation. We welcome home our university and college students, congratulating those who have graduated and are now seeking

employment in their chosen vocations. Congratulations also to our high school graduates who will be making decisions to

either continue with furthering their education or find employment. Blessings to all in the decisions you make. Thank you

to all who were involved in the education of our children—teachers, school administers, bus drivers. Have a safe and

relaxing vacation. We extend a warm welcome to everyone in the community to join us in worship each Sunday. Shalom!!!

Senior’s News Submitted by Gisela Wise

Hello Seniors, We are now into May, and what a month it has been so far, with snow, rain and cold weather, still this is Alberta and we are used to the vagaries of the weather. There is nothing much to report from the Seniors although our facility was once again used for the Elections. Some people have become new Grandparents, and we also have to give our condolences to people who have lost loved ones. At the moment it is a real joy to be driving in the countryside and seeing everything becoming green, all the fields being readied and seeded also the sight of new lambs and calves enjoying the spring air. Our schedule is still crafting every Tuesday from 1 pm to 3 pm, every Wednesday Coffee morning and Friday from 1 to 3 is Pool for Men.

Nobleford alleys and lanes, posts removed. Council has recently decided to remove some of the posts in the alley way west of Centennial Avenue. Council recognizes that all alleyways are for service vehicles and local traffic and has discouraged traffic flow in low visibility and dangerous problem areas with soft buried posts. These blocked off areas are often used as an illegal parking space and therefore block the alley in an unsafe manner. PARKING IS PROHIBITED IN ALLEYS. Please avoid use of alleys when possible and abide by the maximum speed limit of 20 kmph. Use extra caution if you use an alleyway.

A five-year student-initiated journey at Noble Central School culminated with a three-day community effort to build a new playground April 30-May 2.About $112,000 was raised through grants and fundraisers. With gifts in kind,

the school has amassed about $130,000 to build a new playground for the school which serves about 200 students from early learning and kindergarten through Grade 12.The playground project was initiated by the 2010-2011 Grade 6 students as part of an action research project in

Social Studies. The students, now in Grades 11 and 10, surveyed students about what school issue needed to be addressed. The playground

project emerged as the key need. The next year’s Grade 6 students, now in Grade 9, then began the daunting task of fundraising. Grade 6 Social Studies teacher Desiree Lamb says each successive group of Grade 6 students over the years has chosen to continue work on the cause,

with support from Brenda MacMillan, chair of the Nobleford Parent Association, who became the project’s grant writer. The new playground

has elements specifically sized for preschool-aged children, as well as older students. It is also wheelchair-accessible and features 10 slides

and a large “beehive” climbing structure.Lamb says over the past five years, students have learned valuable leadership skills thanks to the

project, particularly that group of Grade 6 students who kick started the fundraising, knowing full well their work would benefit others, not

themselves. “I’m so proud of them,” she says. “They’re great kids.” YouthWrite Scholarships Three students of NCS have just each received YouthWrite Society scholarships to attend the YouthWrite Peak Experience 2015 camp at

Kamp Kiwanis June 28 to July 3. YouthWrite Peak Experience is a premier writing camp for young writers aged 14- 19.Gail Sidonie Sobat,

YouthWrite Coordinator, stated that they were “delighted to offer Kayla Cole The Leanne Scholarship” on the strength of her beautifully

strong poem Dear Mom and Dad. Graycie Heavy Shield received a scholarship from a private individual through the Society for her writing

while Hayden O’Brien was awarded a scholarship from CBC’s Heartland writer, Mark Haroun, so that she may attend YouthWrite Peak Experience and continue her growth as a writer.Congratulations Kayla, Graycie and Hayden! Noble Central School Letter from the Noble Central School Council As I write this, we have approximately 6 weeks of school left. Where does the time go? As this is the last submission before school is out I would like to say a few “Thank You’s”. First of all, I would like to thank all of

those who generously donated food items for our “Stuff the Tractor” event in April. Your kindness is appreciated. Thank you also goes out to Nieboer Farm Supplies for supplying the tractor. I personally would

also like to thank all the parents who helped out with the pancake breakfast. It would not have happened without

you. A big “Thank You” also to those that helped out with the new playground. It looks wonderful and I am

sure will be enjoyed by everyone for years to come. On the note of parents volunteering, I would like to thank you all of you who have helped out over the past year. Whether it has been hot

dog Mondays, help with breakfast and lunches that we have put on, help with our ever popular Turkey Bingo, help setting up the new playground, or just taking the time to come to our monthly meetings, I want to say “Thank You” . I would like to ask that the parents that

were unable to help out this past year, try and find some time or ways to help out next year. We really do have a great little school that will

only grow and prosper with a little bit of your time. I would also like to thank the staff and administration of Noble Central School. With us having such a small school, a lot of extras are put

onto the staff where they have to go above and beyond of what is expected of them. We give our most prized possessions (our kids) to

these people every day for 10 months of the year to not only teach, but help shape our children to become fine and responsible adults. I

personally, would like to thank all of them for all of their hard work and the extra time that they are away from their own families to be with

our kids. Even though summer is fast approaching, we do have a lot of events still happening at the school. We encourage everyone to get involved

and take part. Colleen Jones Chair, Noble Central School Council [email protected]

Submitted by Lee Moltzahn “100 Years of Growing Together”

Centennial Celebrations August 6-12, 2018 Hi everyone! I don’t have too much to report. Thank you to everyone who has

submitted their histories for the book and have already purchased a book. Remember 2015 is the year to get your histories in! Special thanks to our diligent

book committee members for all their hard work thus far! The Book Committee organized another “Write Your History” on May 12th, 2015 at the Community Complex (Blue Whale).

This was another evening of great progress, mind you, the snacks likely helped! The members looking after the celebrations are still working through the logistics and possible events schedule for the celebrations. If your society or special interest group has something special planned for the Centennial, please get in touch with

the Centennial Society. We’d like to make this as collaborative of an event as we can. We hope to put a tentative schedule of

events in the newsletter in the next few months. Our next Centennial Society meeting will be on June 15th, 2015 at 7:30 pm at the Nobleford Area Museum. New members are

always welcome and encouraged. Make a difference in YOUR community! Happy trails till we chat again!

PRESERVING OUR HISTORY We continue to encourage everyone to submit their family or business story for Volume II of our local history book. Please don't

let your children and grandchildren be disappointed when, in years to come, they look at the Nobleford/Monarch history book and

wonder where YOUR write-up is! When Volume I Sons of Wind and Soil was published in 1976, there were a number of families

whose stories were not included. Now people wonder why? Well, the committee (then and now) that volunteers to work on compiling the information can only do so much; we can keep trying to get the information out there and we can keep trying to encourage you to write your story. The rest is up to YOU. So pass the word around; tell your friends and neighbours that we want

everyone's story – make it short or long! Whether you're a newcomer or an old-timer, your story deserves to be told! We don't

want anyone to be left out! On May 12 a number of people came to the writing workshop held in the community complex. It was a way for us to help people

get started on their story, and those who attended would certainly agree that it helped. Our special guests that evening were Belinda

Crowson (Galt Museum) and Kelti Boissonneault. They are members of the Lethbridge Historical Society and are very supportive

of gathering and maintaining local history. Belinda in her work as a researcher, author and educator said she often turns to these

local history books for a better understanding of the flavour and history of a community. She said, “History is important to every

generation – even if they don't realize it until they're older. But they'll appreciate the effort and stories put into this book.” She

had some additional suggestions that might make your story more interesting: “where did you meet your spouse?”; “what is one

thing people should know about you?”; “what is one of your family's favourite foods or traditions?” “what changes in the prices of

things have you noticed over the years?”

Our next meeting is on June 8 at 2:00 p.m. in the museum. Our deadline for gathering stories and information for the book is December 30, 2015. Please call Sharon (403 824-3601) Peggy (403 824-3560) Bernice (403 824-3860) Barb (403 381-3584) Don (403 824-3624) or email <[email protected]>.

Check us out on FACEBOOK – “Nobleford Area Museum Society” Seeding is well under way and the countryside is greening up, so spring must be here to stay! The last couple months have been active ones for

Museum members. The Museum sold native wildflower seeds on May 9th at the Ag. Society Plant Sale. There are still seeds left for purchase ($4.95/pkt), please

contact a member of the Museum if you’re interested. Native flower seeds have a longer seed viability than their domesticated counterparts and

many species benefit from a period of stratification (cold period), so buying some packets and putting them in freezer will prepare the seed for

next year. The SPRING TEA was held May 23rd at the Museum. The exhibit theme was “Teapots and Cookie-jars”. Picture and more details to follow in

the next newsletter. Our FATHER’S DAY BREAKFAST and SCABBY BUTTE TOUR will be held June 20, 2015 Mark it on your calendars!! The breakfast is

from 9:00 to 11:00 am with the tour commencing shortly after. We ask that those interested in the tour to please meet at the Museum at 11:15

am. All are welcome to attend!! Please see the advertisement. Scabby Butte is a unique badlands formation surrounded by native prairie (i.e. the

plough has never touched the soil), located on the south side of Keho Lake. The Blackfoot called the buttes “apikmmikway”. The area is known

for its paleontological and archaeological finds. One of the most well known of the paleontological studies conducted at Scabby Butte was by

Wann Langston Jr. in 1957. His subsequent paper was published in 1975. The abstract and internet link to the full journal article is listed in the

box below. Don Zech will speaking again on the paleontological and archaelogical significance of the area. Lee Moltzahn will again be leading

the crash course in native plant identification. Please bring water, appropriate clothing and footwear, and a snack (if required).

On HERITAGE DAY (August 8th), the Museum will be featuring a special sheep-shearing and knitting demonstration. Stay tuned!

The Ceratopsian Dinosaurs and Associated Lower Vertebrates from the St. Mary

River Formation (Maestrichtian) at Scabby Butte, Southern Alberta Wann Langston Jr.

Canadian Journal of Earth Sciences, 1975, 12(9): 1576-1608, 10.1139/e75-142 Scabby Butte, a limited exposure of late Cretaceous sediments in southern Alberta, Canada, is an important source for the large ceratopsian

dinosaur Pachyrhinosaurus Sternberg. New cranial material confirms this taxon's place among short-faced ceratopsids, and circumstantial

evidence suggests that it possessed a spiked frill reminiscent of Styracosaurus. Postcranial bones associated with Pachyrhinosaurus skulls

in a bonebed deposit probably belong to the genus and indicate a massive body approaching Triceratops dimensions. Another ceratopsian,

Anchiceratops, is sparsely represented. All classes of gnathostomes, except birds, are represented by fragmentary material at Scabby Butte.

Of 21 lower vertebrate taxa, fourteen are new to the St. Mary River Formation (Squatirhina, Squatina, Amia, Belonostomus, Paralbula,

Platacodon, Opisthotriton, Boremys, Plioplatecarpus,a tyrannosaur, a coelurosaur, an ornithomimid, Troödon, Edmontosaurus, Edmontonia). http://www.nrcresearchpress.com/doi/pdf/10.1139/e75-142
