Village Hall Meeting
Saturday 14th July 2018
Many thanks for the large turnout for our village meeting this month. The results as you are probably aware were
112 in favour of granting the parish council authority to dispose of the village hall and 17 against. That now al-
lows us to commit time and money to the future of the village hall without the prospect of refusal to dispose of the
current one.
There were some questions about the strength of the vote against, with a number of people stating that they knew
of more than 17 who were intending to vote against. Given the size of the majority it did seem a little unneces-
sary and perhaps questioning of the impartiality of the vote counters but the returned slips are still available if
anyone still has reasonable doubts. One of the consequences of a secret ballot is that people will often say one
thing and then vote another way.
The size of the turnout suggests that despite previous misgivings, a Saturday morning is probably the best time for
meetings of a similar nature. With that in mind, we are proposing to hold another meeting, provisionally, on
13th October 2018, to look at the background to the potential development plan, which will include a site for the
new village hall. There will be no vote at this meeting but you will have the opportunity to hear more detail of the
plan, and to express you own views. Any formal support or objections will have to wait until a planning applica-
tion is submitted.
We are also hoping to host a similar meeting at some stage to discuss the new village plan, to which you all
contributed with you survey returns. The date of that meeting is still to be decided.
Future parish council meetings are clearly going to include discussions about the way forward with regard to the
hall and planning and you are all very welcome to attend. Meetings are held on the second Thursday of each
month, except August.
David Beswick
As the Festival is a charitable event raising money for the village it is hoped everyone attending appreciates this and buys their drinks and food at our Bar & BBQ, which have needed lot of effort organising. It is the profits from the BBQ & Bar predominantly that makes the money for distribution to the village, where it is required and importantly it covers the cost of putting on future Festivals and events. I hope all attending understand.
Thank you. Wally

From the Vicarage
Has July been a wonderful month weather-wise or a complete disaster? It probably depends if you are someone who enjoys
the hot weather or hates it. The conversations in streets, bus stops, and shops have all been either its wonderful or its too hot,
and probably by the time you are reading this, the children will be on holiday and the summer weather will have returned to
its damp usual. But as a reminder of the good days I have tried to put together ten advantages of the sunny weather so that if
we are still having those conversations we can perhaps find some fresh inspiration in them. If we are not having those con-
versations then it might remind us of what we once had as we prepare for the onset of Autumn / Winter.
The Advantages of hot weather
1. There is no need to cut the grass, it is not growing.
2. It enables us to bring out that hat from the cupboard and unashamedly wear it in public.
3. If someone catches us sleeping in the afternoon we can say we took advantage of the cooler weather and were up very ear-
ly.
4. If someone catches us sleeping in the morning we can say we took advantage of the cooler weather last night and were up
very late.
5. It is too hot to do anything. (That is an advantage really!)
6. It saves money because we do not have to travel abroad for a holiday. (or we simply have to go to the Mediterranean to get
away from this heat)
7. We can have a free upper body workout simply opening and shutting all of the windows.
8. We can discover hours in the day which had previously only existed in our dreams.
9. If we accidently spray someone with a hosepipe, they are grateful.
10. It makes it easier to hold knobbly knee competitions.
Whatever the weather enjoy it; it’s a gift from God and each day is precious.
Have a blessed Summer.

Meet Willow Artist
Sophie Courtier
Sophie has worked in willow for many years and specialises in large-scale sculptures and liv-ing willow projects. You may have seen the leap-ing deer on the A303, which she jointly sculpt-ed with Stephan Jennings and the striking Beast of the Blackdown Hills she recently completed near Blagdon Hill. Sophie’s work has been featured in many national publications and garden-ing magazines including Somerset Life. She en-joys teaching children
and adults of all abilities and takes great pleasure in seeing students that have little or no previous experience of willow, taking home a sculpture they have created.

Sunday Night with the Jo Burt Experience
Jo Burt is an English songwriter, story-teller, singer and guitar player possibly best known for his incredible history working with musical legends such as Freddie Mercury, The Troggs and Black Sabbath over the past 40 years.
The last few years have seen Jo making a name in his own right with his project The Jo Burt Experience. Originally cre-ated as a songwriting development tool, in the last 3 years the band have be-come an outstanding live act playing festivals and venues around the UK, Europe and North America.
The festival commences at 7pm on Friday evening 24th August, with the brilliant rock 'n' roll band
‘Old Dogz new Trixs’
The Old Dogz are a bunch of ex-pro musicians who came to-gether for a one-off 60's charity gig. Their performance was so successful that they decided to stay together and continue play-ing the music they love. That was in 1996, and they are still go-ing strong.
Based in Somerset, the guys have played all over the UK and abroad. Both individually and together they have performed with many well-known bands including The Rolling Stones, The Searchers, The Swinging Blue Jeans, The Tremeloes, Marmalade and Vanity Fair.
Their extensive repertoire covers a wide range of music but with the emphasis on rock and pop songs from the late 50s and 60s.
A Kingsdon Resident on reading that Old Dogz New Trix were appearing at the Kingsdon Festival said,……….”Wow, my mother thinks they are the greatest, she goes to all their concerts”
Saturday night is The Kingsdon Big Band night

A delicious Macaroon
Amaretto d'Italia is a traditional Italian biscuit:
a classic of Matilde Vicenzi range. Matilde
Vicenzi's attention to quality ingredients and
the delicious art makes Matilde Vicenzi ama-
retto the first one in Italy to have obtained
the product certification. The macaroon’s se-
cret ingredients of its unique and special fla-
vour are the apricots kernels that give the
dough, made of sugar and egg whites, the very
bittersweet taste conquering even the most re-
fined palates. The fragrance and deliciousness
of the Italian macaroon make it perfect for con-
sumption as a snack at any time of day or as a
special touch while preparing the most deli-
cious sweet and savoury recipes.
An addition to our Tiptree line
of products is a fine cut

Jurassic Coast Mighty Hike – 22 miles Weymouth to Corfe on the coastal path
Saturday 30th June 2018
Yes it certainly was a “mighty hike”, 22 miles in 28 centigrade with high UV and pollen count, and very little breeze, but successfully accomplished.
Our “Team Jess” of twelve, just part of 1500 plus walkers, set out from Weymouth in a phased release, early on Saturday morning. We actually left at 7.50am, had a refreshment break after 6miles at Osmington Mills, and lunch at the half way point in Lulworth Cove.
The really tough section was the next six miles to Tyneham (the abandoned village on the MOD tank firing range), very test-ing and challenging, where we arrived for a very welcome tea break. The final stretch to the finish at Norden, just north of Corfe Castle, was completed by 8.00pm, tired but with a great sense of achievement and exhilaration. Analysis of the topog-raphy of the complete walk indicates that we climbed up and then down approximately 1500 metres. Certainly we all compli-mented the Macmillan organisation for their planning and arrangements for this walk as everything was undertaken exceed-ingly professionally.
Throughout the walk we met so many interesting people, motivated like us, who were walking in memory of loved ones who had died or were suffering from some form of cancer. I am delighted to report that thanks to the family and friends of all our team members not only have we exceeded our target of raising £3k but have actually doubled it.
So thank you to everyone who sponsored me, your generosity, caring and support, is really greatly appreciated. If anyone would still like to contribute this can be done directly via the Just Giving website
https://www.justgiving.com/Jurassic-hikeTeamJess
Thank you Kingsdon We would like to thank all our Kingsdon friends and neighbours for the welcome we were given when we first came to Kingsdon and for the friendships we have since made. It was with great sadness that we decided to leave and we know we were incredibly lucky to have had seven years in such a wonderful community. Thank you all and very best wishes for the future. Nick and Lisa Newbery
Thank you

Draft Minutes of the Kingsdon Parish Council Meeting held on Thursday 12th July 2018 in the Village Hall
Parishioner comment time: A parishioner requested to speak about the village plan at item 8.
Present: Mr D.Beswick (Chairman), Mr B. Paine (Vice-Chairman), Mr W Elliott, Mr I.Dibben, Mr G. Osborne, Mrs S Mackay, (Parish Councillors);Mr D Norris (District Councillor); Mrs J Land (RFO)and Mrs K Hatt (Parish Clerk) plus 16 parishioners.
1. Apologies: Mr D Ruddle (County Councillor); Mr P.Waters
2. Declarations of Interest: As already declared; no changes.
3. Minutes: The minutes of the monthly parish council meeting held on the 14th June 2018, which had been previously cir-culated, were proposed by W.Elliott, seconded by I.Dibben, unanimously approved and signed.
4. Matters arising not covered by agenda items: P.Waters is sorting out the brambles when he does the verges next week.
5. Chairman’s Report: The Saturday village hall meeting is on Saturday at 10am, please be there if you can. David Norris explained that district council is going through some reorganisation as they need to save a lot of money. He explained these changes, which in summary is going to be case workers and fewer specialists, instead of separate depart-ments, there will only be one set of administration. The senior management level has been restructured which lost some high quality people. Many staff are being made redundant. There are no more enforcement officers. A new IT system is also being introduced and most information will now be through the website. It should be ultimately a good thing but the next six months will be difficult.
6. Correspondence: B.Paine has received a donation of £500, from a local charity towards the old school field plans, the parish council will need to match fund it.
7. Finance: 7.1 and 7.2 Finance- report and cheque signing. All councillors have received the quarterly report. D.Beswick asked if we can do a projection profile, so we can see how our spending is comparing to the budget. D.Beswick and RFO will chat in more detail about this.
B.Paine proposed that £500 from general accounts is moved into the account for the school field, seconded by I.Dibben, all in favour.
B.Paine proposed that we accept these payments, seconded by S.Mackay, all in favour.

8. Village Plan: A parishioner stated that some of the information in the village plan has come from the survey. In the sur-vey there was a statement that development in the village is inevitable, please comment on the types of development you pre-fer. Wants to be clear on what the policy basis is for development in the village?
This was discussed at length with D.Beswick concluding that a lot of this is going to be discussed at the meeting on Saturday and also at a further meeting in September.
S.Mackay reported that the village plan will be in draft format to councillors tomorrow; this will then be forwarded to salc for their review, and then out for everyone to see. There are no great revelations; it does not vary greatly from the last one. The consultation with the village was through the survey, the plan is based purely on this.
9. Allotments: D.Beswick explained that we have had someone say they can maintain the unused allotments so that they remain in a condition for people to hire.
D.Beswick has proposed £200 is put to maintaining these unused allotments, seconded by G.Osborne, all in favour.
10. Defibrillator: A.Colton no longer looks after the defibrillator; W.Elliott has taken on this role again, which is the guard-ianship of the defibrillator. He has to report via an iphone to the organisation. The electrode pads were soon to be out of date. There is a new monitoring service that we have to do. We will need to budget for the defibrillator in future.
11. Play Equipment: W.Elliott previously presented a quotation for all the repairs that were identified at the last inspection in August. The wooden step has already been sorted by W.Elliott and a parishioner. D.Beswick explained that the 106 money cannot be used against existing play equipment. D.Norris confirmed that this is cor-rect. D.Norris said that all new developments can attract SIL, £6 a square meter (15%), this can be used as the parish wishes. So any further maintenance needs to be costed out and put in the budget for the next year.
12. Date of next meeting: Thursday 13th September 2018
The Chairman closed the meeting at 8.35pm

St Margaret’s Hospice Community Support Volunteer Service
Do you have a couple of hours to spare on a flexible basis?
Would you like to volunteer in your community?
Could you support our patients and their families in their own home?
If the answer is yes, we need you!
What is our Community Support Service? It is a home visiting service delivered by trained hospice volunteers and operates across Somerset.
How does the service work? Volunteers offer their time depending on their availability, usually this involves a visit once a week for a couple
of hours during normal working hours Monday to Friday.
Volunteers are assigned a patient who they support over 8 visits, by the end of this time, many patients feel much
more confident about living with their illness.
Volunteers will use their own cars to visit patients. However it is not necessary to be a car owner, we welcome
volunteers who would be willing to walk, cycle or use public transport. Travel costs are reimbursed.
What can a Community Support Volunteer do? The support provided is built around supporting patients achieve identified goals. Everyone’s needs are different,
but the sort of things you can help with include:
Helping patients find relevant information about benefits and other services
Accompanying patients to a GP, hospital appointments, shopping
Taking patients out for a drive or walk
Talking about planning ahead
Spending time with patients so that carers, family or friends can have a break
They are not able to provide medical or personal care. Training and support.
Full training and ongoing support provided
How can I apply or find out more? To learn more about this rewarding role, please contact Katie Baker by emailing Community.Support@st-marg

Just booked a table for Valentine’s Day for me and the wife. Bound to end in tears - she isn’t any good at snooker. f you get an email telling you that you can catch Swine Flu from tins of ham then delete it. It’s Spam Lady (to her doctor): "What l am worried about is my height and not my weight." Doctor: "How come?" Lady: "According to my weight, my height should be 7 feet, 8 inches." John was a meeter and greeter at a B&Q Superstore. He was very good at his job, in fact he was the best one they had ever had. There was only one problem - he always seemed to be ten or fifteen minutes late in the morning Finally the manager called him in to his office and said, "John, we have a problem. I have no complaint about your work, in fact you are really good at what you do and I only wish the rest of the staff were as smart, friendly and efficient as you are. But you really must get here on time in the morning." John replied, "Yes I am aware of the problem and I assure you that I really do try to be punctual." The manager said, " I believe you were in the army before you came here, John, how did you cope there? What did they say to you when you arrived quarter of an hour late in the morning?" "Well they usually said - 'Good morning, Colonel, would you like tea or coffee?'" When the waitress in a New York City restaurant brought him the soup of the day, the Englishman was a bit dismayed. "Good heavens," he said, "what is this?" "It's bean soup," she replied. "I don't care what it's been," he replied. "What is it now?" A mother was preparing pancakes for her sons, Kevin 5, and Ryan 3. The boys began to argue over who would get the first pancake. Their mother saw the opportunity for a moral lesson. "If Jesus were sitting here, He would say, 'Let my brother have the first pancake, I can wait.' Kevin turned to his younger brother and said, "Ryan, you be Jesus!" Two small boys, not yet old enough to be in school, were overheard talking at the zoo one day. "My name is Billy. What's yours?" asked the first boy. "Tommy," replied the second. "My Daddy's an accountant. What does your Daddy do for a living?" asked Billy. Tommy replied, "My Daddy's a lawyer." "Honest?" asked Billy. "No, just the regular kind," replied Tommy.
My daughter came home so excited... She had to parallel park whilst shopping and received the following note of praise: PARKING FINE. "Doctor, doctor, you have to help me out!" "Certainly, not a problem. Which way did you come in?"
My wife was going through her wardrobe, she said “look at this, it still fits me after 25 years” I said “it’s your ***** Scarf.” I gave my father £100 and said, “Buy yourself something that will make your life easier.” So he went out and bought a present for my mother. A man running a little behind schedule arrives at the cine-ma, goes in to watch the movie that has already started, and as his eyes adjust to the darkness, he is surprised to see a dog sitting beside its master in the row ahead, intently watching the movie. It even seemed to be enjoying the movie: wagging its tail in the happy bits, drooping its ears at the sad bits, and hiding its eyes with its paws at the scary bits. After the movie, the man approaches the dog's owner, "Wow, your dog really seemed to enjoy the movie. I'm amazed!" "Yes, I can't believe it myself," came the reply. "He hated the book."
He didn't like the casserole And he didn't like my cake.
He said my biscuits were too hard... Not like his mother used to make.
I didn't perk the coffee right He didn't like the stew, I didn't mend his socks
The way his mother used to do. I pondered for an answer I was looking for a clue.
Then I turned around and smacked him one Just like his mother used to do.
A little girl was watching her parents dress for a party. As her dad donned his tuxedo she warned, “Daddy, you shouldn’t wear that suit.” “And why not, darling?” he asked. “You know that it al-ways gives you a headache the next morning.” After the christening of his baby brother in church, Jason sobbed all the way home in the back seat of the car. His father asked him three times what was wrong. Finally, the boy replied, "That preacher said he wanted us brought up in a Christian home, and I wanted to stay with you guys."
