PROTECT YOURSELF AND YOUR PROPERTYAll over the county, there has been a significant number of tire/

wheel thefts.  To avoid the problem, park inside your garage. Also, consider upgrading alarm systems.  Consider a better car alarm that actually alerts you if someone is bumping, pulling the handle or even breaking the window.  The factory alarm may not be good enough.  Also, it is a good idea to consider video cameras as a deterrent. Criminals will often avoid homes with cameras.

School is back in session and please watch out for the children as they gather each morning at the designated pick up points and when they are dropped off each afternoon.

If a Village Creek resident has had their roof replaced after the hail storm in April, you need to file an application for approval with the ARC, even if it is after the fact.  Information on how to file can be found on the Spectrum Association website.

When you or your contracted yard crews are performing the weekly yard maintenance, take a few minutes to check your curb and gutter areas for any trash, built up silt or weeds that are growing in the cracks of the pavement.  This periodic check and cleanup will enhance the overall look of the community and your respective property.

Reminder if you have not paid your 2015 HOA fees in full, additional charges are being added to your account.  For a schedule of the fees and consequences that could occur by not paying, reference the Billing Cycle Collection Policy guidelines found on the Spectrum Association website.  If you have any

The fall months are a good time to consider planting trees and shrubs. Fertilizing: October is another time for fertilizing our Saint Augustine

lawns. As a general rule, when you no longer need to mow your lawn every week, it is time to fertilize. This will commonly happen on October 15th +/- one week, according to Doug Welsh’s Texas Garden Almanac. Apply a fertilizer with these numbers: 2-1-2 or 1-0-1. Check the bag for area covered. Weeds are best controlled with a healthy turf rather than herbicides; however, if absolutely needed, apply weed killers as directed on the container.

Bare Spots: Does your lawn have bare spots or spots with some grass

other than Saint Augustine? Commonly, those areas in our lawn which have unhealthy turf are a weakness in our irrigation system. Nothing shows an irrigation system’s weakness better than a drought.

Vegetables: Go to Agrilife Extension to find the right vegetables to plant in October (or any month). It’s called Vegetable Garden Planting Dates for Harris County.

Mulch: Mulch anytime. There is little bad to be said about a three or four inch layer of mulch. Keep it away from tree trunks.

Irrigation: Assuming the heat drops a bit, the Texas Garden Almanac says we can shut off our lawn irrigation system in October with the caution that, if there is no rain, you should turn it back on to water every 3 or 4 weeks. You will need to water your vegetables during their growing season.

Trimming Oaks: What is the best time to trim oaks? According to The University of Texas at Austin (http://www.wildflower.org/expert/show.php?id=2428), do NOT trim between February and June. The best time is during a cold period from November through January. Reasonable safe times are the hottest months from July through September. These trimming months are based on risks associated with a beetle that carries oak wilt fungus.

Weather for typical Octobers: Average Low = 58. Average High = 81. Average rainfall = 4.7”

BE A GOOD VILLAGE CREEK NEIGHBOR

Many Village Creek residents have dogs, and most are considerate dog owners. Keep in mind that if you have a dog, and it barks regularly, you are probably negatively impacting someone’s life. If you go away for the day with your dog outside, you may not know what its barking habits are. Please be considerate of others.
