your heart is missing, isn’t it, Mary? There is a hugehole. I know just how you feel.” She does know.I hope to get to Colorado to visit her soon and when I

told her that, she said,“We shall sit up to the weehours of the morning talking. You can stay with me; Ihave a guest room.”

If we could all grow old the way Helen has, the worldwould be much better off. She has always had a greatsense of humor, cared deeply about everyone, been anavid reader and remains that way. This, in spite of los-ing a teenage son years ago, all her close friends andher beloved Mike. Nothing defeats her. What a treat itwas to hear her voice and see her face (on Skype).

Month of the Young Adoles-cent was created to bringabout greater awareness of four key concepts that willhelp young adolescents reachtheir potential:

— the importance of par-ents being knowledgeableabout young adolescents andbeing actively involved intheir lives;

NPMS will host a numberof events during October toemphasize the importance of supporting students as aninvestment in the community.

Jacqueline Coghlan, middleschool principal, stated thatyoung adolescents are reach-

ing out to become their ownperson, to achieve indepen-dence, and to set their owndirection. Yet, it’s also a timewhen they need support andencouragement from adultswho care about them, includ-ing parents, family members, educators, employers, mentorsand anyone in the communitywho comes in contact withthem.

“The young adolescentswith whom we work and liveon a daily basis deserve ourbest efforts if each is to havethe chance to become all he orshe can and should be.Togeth-er, we can make a difference .. . to insure a bright future forall young adolescents,” sheconcluded.

is a gift — an anam cara(soul friend), a family of choice. My friend is a mentor, she always has been. Sheand I had a mutual friendwho died several years ago.Margaret was a therapist

where I worked. Our supervi-sor told me once that hewould gladly pay her just tostand in the main hall of ourmultiservice treatment cen-ter and report what she sens-es each day. That is howintuitive Margaret was. Heroffice was a mess and shewas always late for every-thing. That was a jokearound the center. But sheradiated kindness and skill. If I was stuck on how to dealwith a kid, I went to her.

These two women —strong, educated leaders —

did their master’s degrees inthe early ’40s.They were myteachers as a young thera-pist. I believe I learned asmuch from them as I did ingraduate school. Margaret isgone and Helen is in God’s

waiting room — as my momused to call her senior resi-dence — but I am a betterperson for having both of them for friends. Between thetwo of them and my ownMom, I am one blessed wom-an.

The Demmer Library inThree Lakes will host an infor-

mal discussion of the documen-tary “Prohibition” Wednesday,Oct. 12, at 6:30 p.m.

Prohibition is a three-part,five-and-one-half hour docu-mentary film series directedby Ken Burns and LynnNovick that tells the story of the rise, rule and fall of the18th Amendment to the U.S.Constitution and the era itencompassed.

The culmination of nearly acentury of activism, prohibi-tion was intended to improve

the lives of all Americans andprotect individuals, families

and society at large from theeffects of alcohol abuse. Butthe enshrining of a faith-driv-en moral code in the Constitu-tion paradoxically caused mil-lions of Americans to rethinktheir definition of morality.

The film raises questionsabout means and ends, indi-

vidual rights and responsibil-ities and the proper role of government.
