RESEARCH

ABOUT

To understand the jewellery making processes existing in India and creating your own theme based on the research which will lead to the final design prototype.

Worked on ‘Jewellery for well being’ by understanding the Indian traditional ‘Solah Sringar’. I combined the scientific meaning of ‘Flower of Life’ and the human meditative ‘Chakras’.

“Ajna” meaning summoning the sixth primary chakra in the body according to the Hindu mythology. This head adornment piece takes its inspiration from the concept of third eye (Anjna chakra) and flower of life which is a geometrical placement of circles. The pattern is inspired from the both the concepts and has been intricately carved out by hand bending of the brass metal.

LEATHERBAG

Page 11: Vikas sethi

To understand the bag making processes existing and creating your own theme, swatches and surfaces based on the research which will lead to the final design prototype in leather.

Worked on the requirements of a college students belonging to upper middle class, so had to understand the requirements according to that.

Branche literally meaning trendy in French is a fashionable bag for a college going male. The upper flaps are made stiff using fusing material which gives it a classic look. The front pocket has a hand braided button to give it a personalized look. The design has been evolved keeping in mind the basic user requirements such as laptop, notebooks, i-pads etc. The leather used is brown colored vegetable tanned, which gives it a simple yet an appealing look.

MATERIAL ANDSURFACES

Page 15: Vikas sethi

To understand the material structures by exploring and experimenting with it and creating lifestyle product out of it.

The methodology undertaken was to choose a theme and experiment with various materials which represent it. I worked with undulating surfaces.

MORBIDO E ONDULATO meaning soft and undulating in Italian, this is a humble handcrafted seating for one, which would arouse curiosity and gain attention without being loud. A product designed for comfort, from the undulating surface created, this floor cushion would give the space a unique identity while fulfilling its function.

TRENDS ANDFORECASTING

Page 19: Vikas sethi

To understand the trends in the FOOD industry and based on it predicting future trends.

The methodology involved reading various articles and understanding the food related trends prevailing in the industry and also mapping the trends upcoming in the same arena.

Out of the brainstormed trends one trend (Relationship Weaver) was taken forward and worked with. The outcome was to publish a trend study, materials prevalent and colors to be used for the same trend.

CRAFTWORKSHOP

Page 28: Vikas sethi

To understand the socio-cultural related aspects around a craft (bamboo in Madhya Pradesh) and its emergence and the current situation. Based on this designing a solution which will help the artisans.

The methodology undertaken was firstly doing the field research and then mapping the emergence of craft, activities and people related to it. This lead to the formation of a brief which ultimately resulted in a physical product.

BOOK DISPLAY STAND is a simple and a craft solution to displaying books in a library. The stand is meant for one book only and thus provides a comfortable slide in and the bamboo lends itself strong enough to hold the book in upright manner.

FORM ANDCULTURE

Page 32: Vikas sethi

To understand the socio-cultural aspects with respect to a form or an object, and also to understand its development and changes happened during the evolving years.

The object chosen was a ‘chulha’ (stove). This involved in extensive form study and the field trips. To understand the form development better we worked with the pre-historic era and understood the form evolution process and forces that lead to change it.

The journey was divided into two parts, one where we had to study the situations of the pre-historic man and understand the tool making process with resources available then, and the other was to study a form in the surroundings and understand the behavioural aspects of man and what forces lead to the changes in the same. The final outcome is the derived form for todays context. The solution of ‘chulha’ lends itself ann area for a variety of utensils to adjust.

SUSTAINABLEDESIGN

Page 35: Vikas sethi

As a part of international open electives i worked with sustainable design where we as a group worked on creating installations with waste materials.

The methodology involved us viewing various documentaries on how people all over the world are taking sustainable design to make a change. This also involved various class discussions, collecting materials and explorations.

The final installation was meant to marry naturalism and the installation itself. The installation was made with waste fabrics only.

Page 38: Vikas sethi

To understand the industrial environment and the process followed in manufacturing and designing a product. The company i worked with was Studio ABD.

I was assigned two tasks, firstly i had to develop various craft themes for there existing product ‘alvaze’ a vase made in ‘channapatna’ craft, other was to derive color schemes for New York city and work with ‘channapatna’ craft.

The project lead me to visit the ‘channapatna’ village and work with the age old craft of lacquer wood. First concept is made by using old jewellery making techniques of Jaipur and the next one is made by playing the natural colors of ‘channapatna’.

EXPERIENCEDESIGN

Page 40: Vikas sethi

This workshop aimed at creating an experience and objects which will enhance the experience over all.

The course involved choosing a theme and exploring various forms and shapes which will define the experience altogether.

FREEDOM & ESCAPE was the theme according to which the space had to be designed. During the ideations and brain storming i came up with the concept of small personal observatory to view stars and other celestial bodies. The space has an outer structure, and a pedestal outside to jump in the space, and there is a star shaped table in the centre where the telescope can be kept. This whole setup would be placed in an open environment where a clear sky view is available.

To come up with a new collection for the brand ‘Designwise India Pvt. Ltd.’ (Mukul Goyal). The theme can be experimental and new.

I worked with various themes like ’bird of paradise’ flower, boat and crescent form of moon. The ideology was to marry simplicity and romanticism together and create a collection of tea light holders.

Mystic Collection aims at blending simplicity with romanticism. The motive was to create an interactive, calm and serene experience for the end user. The bird of paradise flower, boat and the crescent of the moon have been taken as the source of form inspiration. The idea of lighting a boat shaped votive and creating a wholesome experience which is soothing, blissful and rejuvenative seemed to be a very lyrical.

BUBBLE HOOKS - The ironsmiths of rural villages in outskirts of Jaipur are engaged in iron craft for generations. Most of the iron objects are made by hammering them into shape. Metal is made pliable by beating it in furnaces and giving it shape by using hammer and tongsThe intention of this artefact was to provide a sculptural yet a utility piece on the wall. The form is inspired by the coral fishes and the bubbles act as the hooks for the clothes. The fish and the bubbles have been made out of a single piece of iron.
