VBS 2010 Children’s Music Rotation Base Conference

Purpose StatementThis two hour plan is designed to prepare music leaders for teaching Music at Campfire Creek using LifeWay’s Saddle Ridge Ranch materials.

Resources to Prepare Teacher of this conference should learn all choreography in advance by watching

the demonstration DVD. Make props for fishing activity: cut out 5 fish shapes from heavyweight paper or

craft foam. Write one phrase on each fish: God loves, God sees, God cares, God heals, God helps. Attach one large paper clip to each fish. Make 4 fishing poles by tying pieces of yarn to one end of 3/4” dowels (approx. 4-feet long). Attach a magnet to the end of the yarn.

Secure the 6 pie tins to a wall or display board so the words inside can be read. Print each day’s Bible verse on a sheet of heavyweight paper or poster board (p.

4, Music Rotation Guide).

Room Setup Description Place chairs in a large semi-circle surrounding “campsite.” Leave plenty of space

for conferees to participate in practicing the choreography.

Decoration Suggestions Create a campsite scene with small tent, fishing gear, sleeping bag rolls, artificial

campfire. Make a creek by laying down blue fabric or gossamer. Outline the “creek” with

rocks made from crumpled and stuffed brown paper bags. Place the 5 magnet fish in the creek.

See “Decoration Ideas” (p. 26) in Music Rotation Book for alternative ways to create a campsite.

Teaching StepsAsk one conferee to look over the Day 4 Teacher Devotional and be prepared to read it later.

Step 1: (5 -10 minutes) Welcome activity As conferees enter, greet them and give each one a copy of one of the Wrangler Challenges for Teachers. (Randomly distribute the 5 different challenges to all participants.) Ask them to use the Bibles provided to fill in the blanks.

Step 2: Introduction Introduce yourself Summary – We’re going to get an overview of the Scripture content and concepts

for VBS 2010. We will learn the songs and choreography. We will try out a few of the activities and games suggested in the music teaching material. We will use some of the media resources (DVD-Rom) available.

This year’s VBS theme is a result of asking a group of kids questions about what they like and what they think is important. They were asked to identify questions they would

like to ask God. The five daily session topics are questions these kids really asked. Point out the posters that give the five questions:

o Who Am I?o Does God care about me?o What is God’s plan for me?o How can I be like Jesus?o What do I do now?

We’ve got the questions and will find the answers in God’s Word. Our Motto: Roundin’Up Questions, Drivin’ Home Answers.

Step 3: (15 minutes) Talk through the motions to “Saddle Ridge Ranch Theme Song.” Assign conferees an instrument from this list: fiddle, lap steel, banjo, drums, bass,

guitar. Practice how to mime instruments during the intro and interludes of the song.

Play the DVD version of Jeff doing the motions with lyrics on the screen (“performance”). All sing along and have fun being a country band! Loosen up!

Lead conferees in repeating the Theme Scripture: James 1:5.

Note that theme song is included as a Bonus Track on the music DVD because it is suggested to be used in the Worship Rally and optionally at Family Night. Printed music for this song is in the songbook VBS 2010 Saddle Ridge Ranch Music Bookl. Lyrics are printed in the Music Rotation Leader’s Guide. The recording is included on the VBS 2010 Music Rotation and Musical CD.

Step 4: (15 minutes) The question for Day 1 is “Who Am I?” Ask several conferees to share one of the Scripture statements from Wrangler

Challenge for Teachers Day 1. These verses give a foundation for God’s answer to the question “Who Am I?” (Comment – Wrangler Challenge for Teachers is a printable resource from the CD-ROM found in the Administrative Guide.)

The verse for Day 1 is: Psalm 139:14 I will praise You, because I have been remarkably and wonderfully made. Your works are wonderful and I know this very well.

Teach the words and movements for “Who He Says I Am” by echo singing. Sing one phrase at a time and demonstrate the movements. Have the participants sing each phrase back to you and do the movements.

Select 4 or 5 participants to be a STOMP style “rock band” using “creek” items and rock band props. Lead the whole group to sing the song with the CD and perform the motions while the “rock band” plays its instruments.

The Bible story about creation leads to the application: I am God’s greatest creation. I can praise Him. As you prepare to lead VBS music sessions, look for opportunities to praise God.

Step 5: (15 minutes) The question for Day 2 is “Does God Care About Me?”

The answer is found in the Day 2 verse; 1 Peter 5:7: Casting all your care upon Him, because He cares about you. The Bible story is about Joseph. He faced many tough situations and maybe wondered “Does God care about me?”

Ask some conferees to share the scriptures on the Day 2 Wrangler Challenge for Teachers. They remind us that God cares and we can trust Him.

Ask 4 or 5 volunteers to go fishing in the “creek.” Provide fishing poles and encourage them to “cast” their lines in the creek (like fly fishing). Touch the magnet on the string to the paper clip on each fish.

Demonstrate the sign language for each phrase on the fish as they are caught: God loves, God sees, God cares, God heals, God helps.

Teach the words and motions to “God Cares.” Speak the words while demonstrating the motions, phrase by phrase. Lead the participants to repeat the words and motions after you, phrase by phrase.

Sing the song, doing the motions, with the CD. Encourage the conferees to think of examples of God’s care for you and watch for

opportunities to share it with someone who needs encouragement.

Step 6: (15 minutes) The question for Day 3 is “What is God’s plan for me?” Read the verse together from the poster. “For I know the plans I have for you” –

this is the Lord’s declaration – “plans for your welfare, not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope.” Jeremiah 29:11.

The Bible story is about Zacchaeus. The kids will learn that Jesus loved Zacchaeus and God used him even though he was a hated tax collector. Discuss things that kids might think would keep God from using them or that seem to make them unimportant to God. Compare the responses to Zacchaeus.

Ask the conferees to think about their favorite things to do and how God uses those interests and talents in His kingdom. Now pretend to be one of your VBS kids: think of one favorite (kid) activity. It can be a sport, musical activity, hobby, or anything else they like. Count “1-2-3,” then say “Freeze!” Everyone should strike a pose showing his activity. Let the group try to guess what the others are acting out.

We’ll take this opportunity to discuss with the kids how God has a plan for their lives and their unique gifts. The most important part of God’s plan is for each of them to have a relationship with Jesus. This song gives the plan for that.

Teach the dance steps for “Tumbleweed.” Play the “instruction” section of the DVD to learn the rest of the song and motions. Participants should stand and do everything as Jeff leads. (Don’t just sit and watch.)

Step 7: (15 minutes) The question for Day 4 is How Can I Be Like Jesus? This sounds pretty daunting to both kids and adults. Can we live a perfect life or

do miracles? No – but we can follow Jesus’ example. Read the verse together from the poster. Make your own attitude that of Christ Jesus. Philippians 2:5

Ask volunteers to read the Scriptures found on the Day 4 Wrangler Challenge that gives some of the characteristics for us to follow.

Teach the sign language for “Like Jesus.” Lead the participants to join you in doing the signs for verse 1. Then skip to verse 2 and do the same, comparing the

differences. Ask conferees to identify the four things in the song that people can do to be like Jesus (live, care, love, touch the world). Teach the signs for the chorus. Lead the group to sing the song with the sign language along with the CD.

Invite the conferee you enlisted earlier to read the “Day 4 Teacher Devotion.”

Step 8: (15 minutes) The question for Day 5 is What Do I Do Now? Give a plastic spoon and dried bean to 5 or 6 volunteers. Invite them to stand

behind a designated line and launch cowboy beans toward the tin plates. As each characteristic is “hit,” ask the conferees to come up with a kid-friendly

definition of it. Explain that each word on the plates is a way to honor God. The Bible story for this day teaches the kids to celebrate; pray instead of worry;

think about things that are noble, right, pure, lovely, and admirable as we answer the fifth question - “What Do I Do Now?” The application is for kids that “I know what to do. I can live in ways that honor God.”

Practice the step-touch footwork at the beginning of “What I’m Gonna Do Together.”

Demonstrate the motions of key words honor, lead, purity, honesty, thanks, and peace. Take the opportunity to get conferees to share how each of these characteristics or traits is important in living for Christ.

Speak or sing the words of the entire song, demonstrating the motions. Do it one phrase at a time so the participants can echo.

Read the memory together from the poster: Now if any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives to all generously and without criticizing, and it will be given to him. James 1:5.

God promises to be generous and non-critical as He guides us. Encourage your conference participants to commit to treating the VBS leaders they will train and the children they will teach with the same spirit.

Step 9: (5 minutes) Closing Encourage participants to commit their creativity and energy to making VBS a

fun-filled and life-changing experience for all the children who participate. Remind them that prayer for the children and prayer for their own preparation is critical. This year they can use the teacher devotion and Wrangler Challenge material in their own devotional time to prepare. We don’t want children to “just” have a wonderful time – we want them to encounter Jesus!

Pray together. Ask God to pour out blessings on every leadership training event and every VBS session throughout the country and world.
