Pledge of Academic Integrity

As an AP Government student you are expected to perform all academic tasks with honor and integrity. Throughout the course you will be challenged to think, process, organize, represent and create your own ideas. Unethical use of information, cheating, and plagiarism violate the learning experience and at the same time compromise your personal integrity and honor and reflect poorly on Carson High School.

Cheating

Cheating or academic dishonesty can take many forms, but always involves the improper taking of information from and/or giving of information to another student, individual, or other source. Examples of cheating can include, but are not limited to:

Taking or copying answers on an examination or any other assignment from another student or source Giving answers on an examination or any other assignment to another student Collaborating on exams, assignments, papers and/or projects without specific teacher permission Allowing others to complete coursework for you instead of doing your own original work Using unauthorized electronic devices Unethical use of electronic devices to share exam or course assignment information Falsifying course data, including changing grades electronically

Plagiarism

Plagiarism is a common form of cheating or academic dishonesty in the school setting. It is representing another person’s works or ideas as your own without giving credit to the proper source and submitting it for any purpose. Examples of plagiarism can include, but are not limited to:

Submitting someone else’s work, such as published sources in part or whole, as your own without giving credit to the source

Turning in purchased papers or papers from the internet written by someone else Representing another person’s artistic or scholarly works such as musical compositions, computer

programs, photographs, drawings, or paintings as your own Helping others plagiarize by giving them your work to copy

You are expected to produce work that is yours alone, recognizing the importance of thinking for yourself and learning independently, when that is the nature of the assignment. Adhering to the Code of Honor for the purposes of academic honesty promotes an essential skill that is expected at all higher education institutions and far beyond the school environment. It is your responsibility to demonstrate careful planning and time management so as not to create the temptation towards academic dishonesty.

I, _______________________________, commit to submit AP Government course work that is uniquely my own. I will adhere to the code of honor as described above for the duration of the course.

Component 1: Current Events Online Journal

Objective: To build a strong background in national and international current events to equip students with contemporary examples to use in their writing.

In a democracy, the responsibility of understanding political events and participating in the political process rests upon the voting citizen. In addition, one part of your success in AP Government will be your ability to cite contemporary political events to justify your reasoning in your writing (primarily in your FRQs, free response questions) and classroom discussions.

Throughout the course of the summer, complete 10 current event entries relating to the news topics listed below. Each week in Edmodo, I will post links to high profile national political news stories that relate directly to the content of the course. The articles may be found in the Current Events folder in Edmodo. Each event will have its own folder. The folder will contain several articles and links to help you learn about the topic. If you still feel that you need more information in order to write the summary, go online and conduct your own research using credible sources.

Edmodo materials may be printed out and taken with you if you are travelling this summer. Please note that articles will be posted as they happen in the news. Some weeks there may be several new folders and other weeks there may be none. Regardless, all ten articles/topics will be posted two weeks prior to the start of school.

Create your current event article summaries in a word document or a Google document. Save all article summaries using this file name format: Lastname_Firstname_CURRENT EVENT ARTICLE # ___Following the correct file naming format will ensure that your work is graded efficiently and recorded correctly. Check to be sure all files are named correctly before submitting them to www.turnitin.com.

Use the sample entry guide following the exact format and including all required elements for each entry to earn full credit for this component. For each entry, cite each source using MLA format, write a 1 paragraph factual summary of the story, and a one paragraph analysis of the event’s significance as it pertains to politics. Each entry must have at least 250 words. FOLLOW THE FORMAT CAREFULLY – YOUR GRADE WILL REFLECT HOW WELL YOU FOLLOW DIRECTIONS.

All entries must be submitted online at www.turnitin.com by August 17 at 11:59 pm (the day before school begins). The class code for AP Government is 8073412. The password is CONSTITUTION. Check to be sure all files are named correctly before submitting them to www.turnitin.com.

It is your responsibility to follow these directions and join the 2014 AP Government class in both Edmodo and at www.turnitin.com.

Current Event Article # EXAMPLE:

TOPIC : Executive Branch - PRESIDENT – Official Responsibilities

Date of Article: January 12, 2011

Location: Tucson, Arizona – Arizona State University

Summary: Main speaker at the memorial service for the 6 victims of the shooting rampage that included a

federal judge. President Obama acknowledged the many heroic acts performed by ordinary Americans to help,

protect and stop the killer in the Safeway Parking Lot at Representative Giffords’ Congress on the Corner event.

He also expressed the nation’s condolences to the families who lost a family member in the shooting. He

memorialized each person, noting their contributions to our country. He also visited Rep. Giffords in the

hospital and shared with the crowd that she had opened her eyes for the first time. He challenged the media

and politicians to tone down their rhetoric towards each other.

Analysis: The president fulfilled his duty at the head of our government to respond to crisis situations. In this

crisis a federal judge was killed and a member of the House of Representatives was shot in the head at a public

event known as “Congress at the Corner”. Representative Gabby Giffords was attacked by shooter Jared

Loughner as she greeted members of the community. The president expressed the sympathy of the nation to

those experiencing the situation first hand by visiting Representative Giffords in the hospital, met with families

of those killed in the attack and delivered a funeral message at the memorial service in Tucson. This is an

example of the President, as head of the Executive Branch of government, interacting with the legislative branch

by reaching out to Representative Gabby Giffords of Arizona and interacting with the judicial branch by

expressing condolences to the family of the judge killed in the shooting.
