Taylored Trips – Places of Interest – Jeffrey’s Bay
Jeffrey's Bay
Just recently I have been in a very fortunate position to have had quite a few opportu
nities to visit this iconic world-renowned surfer’s mecca on our South African coast. Jeffrey’s Bay owes its popularity largely to the legendary surfing movie, “Endless Summer” where a few cool surfer dudes made their way around the world in search of the perfect wave. They found the longest,
most perfect righthand pointbreak on the planet on a beach in South Africa and they called it Supertubes. A legend was born!
Annual surfing competitions are held here and a
shark attack during a competition on one of the top competitors even adds to the hype and popularity of this seaside resort town. A beautiful bay, beaches that go on for miles, waves that go on for even longer, sea shells for Africa, surfer breaks with names so obscure that only the very
imaginative could fathom and mussel-clad rocky points where the rocks are known as bricks. This is Jeffrey’s Bay!We holidayed here once, so many years ago that it hurts trying to remember when. My best memory of J’Bay, as it is affectionately known, was a steak house, up on the 1st
floor of a
complex somewhere in the CBD, that had 1kg steaks at give-away prices. Man, what a feast! My mouth starts watering just thinking about it. How I wish that place was still there. There’s nothing wrong with the bird life around here either. I’m talking about the feathered variety. This one is in a farmstal
l just out of town,
this one is in a bar,
And this one was
perched on the neighbours roof howling at the moon.
On one trip en-route to the magical K’Buku in the Langkloof, this town even got to see the other side of me.
A rare sight indeed
Speaking of rare sights, this one not as rare though, I cycled down to the beach and back twice, (not on the same day) after doing some running repairs and adjustments on Mark’s
bicycles. The down to the beach bit was ok, it was the and back that took some doing.
See – same beach, different colour bike! No illusions, no trick photography – twice!
Getting back to the beaches, which is arguably what Jeffrey’s Bay is all about, I can’t think of a better depiction of Jeffrey’s
Bay than this picture.
Jeffrey's Bay's Best
Besides lazing in the sun or using the beach to get to the water for a surf, there is one
other thing that these beaches are good for. Walking! From the main beach it is a lovely walk to the right down to the back-packers on the point.
Main beach
Around the
Supertubes area, there are plenty of friendly dogs to entertain you while you take a stroll.
And around the Kabeljous River Mouth area you can walk for days.
That’s not a speck on your screen, it’s a ball in the sky being thrown for the dogs.
That’s not a speck on your screen either, it’s a helicopter in the sky.
That’s not a smudge on your screen, that’s a stingray.
Not only dog friendly, horse friendly too.
Pink Flamingos and Black Oystercatchers.Be warned though, wherever you see these things, they are not there for the perfect, calm, balmy, mild weather. They are built
here because the wind pumps here.

So when you have a perfect day in J’Bay, get out there and make the most of it. It’s awesome.
Until next time, “Keep on Tripping!”
