    (paragraph 5)

    Are You Your Ringtone ?

Before leaving your home, youprobably look in the mirror to makesure youre satisfied with how youlook. If youre like many of yourfriends, you also want your mobileringtone to convey a particular imageof yourself.

Speciality ringtones originated in Finland in 2001and quickly became a global phenomenon. It isestimated that in 2007, between 50 and 60 million

people downloaded at least one ringtone and spentabout $5 billion doing so. The reason for this hugesuccess is that ringtones, like mobile phones, havebecome a fashion accessory that people use tomake a statement about their personality.

So just as when choosing other accessories, peopleneed time to make the right choice. According to arecent survey of 18- to 34-year-old mobile phoneusers in Britain, it takes the average user about half an hour to choose a new ringtone. In addition, 10

per cent replace their ringtones weekly, and manyothers change ringtones three to four times a year.

The survey also found that nearly everyone makessome sort of judgement about people based ontheir ringtones. Apparently, we dont cover upthose opinions: only 10 per cent of the surveyrespondents were not criticised because of theirringtones.

Survey participants were also asked to matchringtones with descriptions of personalities.

One common response was the match betweena ringtone of a current popular song and thedescription moves with the times but tries toohard to be cool. Another common match was asport-related ringtone, such as a team song, withthe description armchair sportsperson that is,someone who enjoys watching sport.

But ringtone providers may find it surprising that amobiles original ringtone was commonly matchedwith not trying to impress has better things

    to do.So whats your ringtone?

What famous fictional spy is intelligent, well-dressed

and highly attractive to women? James Bond, of course. The character, now known mainly through the manyJames Bond films, was created by English novelist IanFleming when he began writing the Bond books in the1950s. Some people say that Bond was partly based onthe real spy known as Sidney Reilly.

Reillys real name was Sigmund Rosenblum. It isbelieved that he was born in the Ukraine in 1874 andstudied chemistry at university there. In the early 1890s,he moved first to Paris and then to London. Depending

on which version of Reillys life you believe, he mighthave briefly spent some time in Brazil as well.

What is definite is that Reilly was a British spy, whoused various disguises and names. He had many loveaffairs and marriages, was charming and persuasive, andoften acted recklessly. It is also known that, followingthe Communist Revolution in 1918, he spied mainly inRussia, gathering intelligence on the new regime andworking to overthrow it.

Although Reilly was given a military award for his work

in Russia, some spy historians think it was actually givento secretly honour his work as a British spy in Germanyduring the First World War. Reilly claimed that, in thiscapacity, he had impersonated a German officer inorder to obtain battle plans. This allowed him to workin a German arms factory and learn what weapons thecountry was producing.

Historians have not yet uncovered the full truthabout Reillys activities. But thereslittle dispute about his death.

After a brief absence, Reillyreturned to Russia in 1925to work with a new anti-Communist group. Inreality, this group wasfake and was organisedby the Russian militaryintelligence service. When heentered the country, Reilly wasarrested and imprisoned. He wasexecuted in November 1925.

    READING

During major sporting events, l ike the Tour de Franceor the Olympics, the use of performance-enhancingdrugs or doping is debated in the media and byfans. I used to oppose doping, but Ive changed mymind. I now think adult athletes should be allowed totake performance-enhancing drugs if they want.

According to recent articles in the science magazinecalled Nature and the British Medical Journal(BMJ), the tests for performance-enhancing drugscan be inaccurate. However, this did not help FloydLandis, who won the 2006 Tour de France. His testresults showed that hed taken a synthetic form of thehormone testosterone. He denied it. But still, he hadto give up his title. How can this be fair if the testsare unreliable?

Many scientists have pointed out that new drugs arebeing developed faster than detection tests. And, in thenear future, athletes could be genetically modified that is, be given specific genes to improve theirperformance. It may not even be possible to develop atest to detect the genes. This will increase suspicionsthat already exist about the tests reliability, accordingto Natures article.

Further, according to the BMJ article, thereslittle medical evidence to back up the claims thatperformance-enhancing drugs, such as steroids, are dangerous. However, what can be dangerous, according to many experts, is the current

situation that some athletes take performance-enhancing drugs secretly and without medicalsupervision.

Today, so many people are having cosmetic surgeryand taking medication to improve mental and physicalhealth. Therefore, we shouldnt deny athletes thechance to enhance their performance with drugs in asafe, medically supervised way.
