Safety Scavenger Hunt Stations

STATION 1: Safety Goggles

Safety goggles are to be worn during labs that involve any of the following situations.

- Dissecting or slicing with a scalpel. Goggles are required to protect your eyes from fragments potentially flying off of the table due to cutting bones, rock, blade snapping, or other hazards.

- Chemicals used in a lab. Goggles will prevent the chemicals from getting into your eyes both from splash and vaporization.

IN THE EVENT OF GETTING STUFF IN YOUR EYE(S).

QUICKLY MOVE OVER TO THE EYE WASH which is in the front corner sink.

Place your face over the sink, position the eye wash nozzles as close to your eyes as possible.Pull the trigger, and rinse your eyes with water for 15 minutes!

STATION 2: LAB DAY APPEARAL

- Lab days ARE NOT the day to wear you best clothes. Properly fitting clothing that do not restrict movement or hang will ensure safety in the lab. Mr. Markley is NOT RESPONSIBLE for damage to clothes

due to lab materials coming in contact with them.

- Lab Aprons are to be worn when directed by the lab. The aprons are heavy vinyl. The vinyl prevents chemicals and substances from splashing on to the clothing underneath. Lab apron may be available during other labs. Ask Mr.

Markley if you feel you need one (I.E. spirit day and have to wear your jersey).

- Long hair needs to be tied back, ideally in a bun or tucked into the back of your shirt so that it does not get into the lab materials and keeps you clean.

STATION 3: USE OF TOOLS

TOOLS ARE TO BE USED PROPERLY. Do not use tools in ways that they were not designed. This mean stabbing with a scalpel, trying to cut with a dissection needle, using scissors as pliers. You get the point.

ALWAYS use tongs to handle hot glassware.

If pipettes are involved, use the suction bulb to pull up the desired amount of liquid. DO NOT use pipettes as straws.

If a tool breaks, inform Mr. Markley so an appropriate replacement can be found.

MACHINERY needs to only be used as intended. If you are confused on how to use a piece of lab equipment, please ask Mr. Markley for help. If you break any of the machinery, you may be liable for providing a replacement.

STATION 4: GLASSWARE

We will be using glass beakers, test tubes, graduated cylinders, and pipettes. At the beginning of the lab wash your glassware to guarantee that it is clean and free of contaminates. Wet glassware is incredibly slippery, so handle with care.

Glassware can and will break if handled roughly. If it breaks, please inform Mr. Markley immediately, so that the shards can be cleaned up and that the area will be safe for students again.

You may inadvertently knock over your glassware causing a spill. If the liquid is not hazardous (explained in the lab) clean up the spill, and let Mr. Markley know so that he can inform the class of the slip hazard. If the liquid is hazardous, please tell Mr. Markley ASAP, so that he can clean it up and wash the area so that you and your classmates are safe.

At the end of every lab, WASH and DRY the glassware.

STATION 5: Cuts and Injuries

- NO!- Cuts and injuries ONLY HAPPEN IF YOU OR YOUR

CLASSMATES ARE NOT FOLLOWING SAFETY PROTOCOL! CUTS AND INJURIES WILL RESULT IN CITIZENSHIP GRADE LOWERED AND DISCIPLINARY ACTION

- In the event that such event occurs, inform Mr. Markley, so that proper treatment can be given and the situation addressed.

STATION 6: EATING AND DRINKING

General class rule is NO EATING. This is still true on lab days. Science labs are notorious for having residues left from labs (despite thorough cleaning). You run risk of accidental ingestion of toxic substances by eating in the lab. You also can contaminate results causing your work to be incorrect.

Drinks are allowed normally, as long as there is a lid that can be screwed on. This prevents contamination AND spills from accidental knock overs. ON LAB DAYS, Drinks should be stowed in backpacks so that lab material cannot coming in contact.

STATION 7: FIRE

IN CASE OF FIRE, the fire extinguisher is in the front of the room next to the pencil sharpener. Mr. Markley is the only one allowed to use it. The exception is if Mr. Markley is on fire (literally, and not intentionally set on fire). Then first one to use it, and put Mr. Markley out will definitely be rewarded; however, if multiple students are fighting over the fire extinguisher and fail to put Mr. Markley out before he dies, everyone will be severely punished.

STATION 8: BEHAVIOR

Safety in a classroom is only as good as its worst student. Your behavior in the lab will determine how labs will go next time. With this in mind, always act to insure the safety of everyone in the room. This means:

- No horseplay (I.E. Galloping around the room, running, etc.)

- No practicing (i.e. Trombone, football /basketball plays,etc.)- No impromptu games of tag or red rover

Follow the directions. Do not deviate to perform other experiments NOT DESCRIBED. If you think “I wonder what would happen if…..” or “I bet it would be cool if….” or “I bet you that….” STOP RIGHT THERE. DO NOT CONTINUE!

Lastly, no eating of lab materials unless otherwise directed.

STATION 9: SCHOOL WIDE SAFETY

LOCK DOWN DRILL

- In the event that a dangerous person or persons comes on to campus, the Principal will trigger the siren for a lock down. At this time Mr. Markley will advise you to get under your desk, keep all electronic devices off and away, and remain silent. Mr. Markley will poke his head out into the hall, grab any students out in the hall, close lock the door and draw the curtains. Finally, role will be take and submitted to the front office. Position and silence is to remain until the lockdown is lifted…. I really hope you don’t need to go to the bathroom.

SHELTER IN PLACE

- Similar to a lockdown but the difference is that teaching and activity goes on with the door locked and shades drawn. Mr. Markley will also position himself lose to the door in the event of an intruder.

FIRE!!!

- The ear piercing sound of the fire alarm will go off. At this point Mr. Markley will escort everyone out to the designated safe zone, quickly take role so that all students are accounted for. Student are not allowed to return to the classroom until the all clear. Please remain in the designated area.

- Designated Safety Zone for Fire= Front of Small Gym

- Solid waste should be tossed into the trash cans. This includes paper towels used in clean up.

HAZARDOUS

- Liquids need to be placed into the designated the disposal receptacle (usually a jar)

- Solids need to be disposed of into the designated biohazard bag. This includes disposable tools, paper towels used in clean up and handling, and gloves.

ALWAYS WASH YOUR HANDS AFTER A LAB.
