JUNE 2016Greetings:"For as the body is one and has many parts, and all the parts of that body, though many, are one body-so also is Christ.” - 1 Corinthians 12:12

Every team has them. Most of us have even played the role ourselves, but no one really likes to. It's the role of the bench-warmer.

There are only so many players who can play at one time, and every team has players who sit on the bench more than they play in the game. But does this make them any less of a team member than one of the starters?

No way! The role of a bench-warmer is simply different, than that of a starter. Bench-warmers have big roles in contributing to practices, developing team spirit, and in giving necessary breaks to the starters. In 2 Samuel 20:14-22, we find a story about a wise woman who saved her whole city from being destroyed. Her name was never mentioned, and later in the book of Ecclesiastes, she is referred to as a wise man! But this doesn't by any means diminish the fact that she took it upon herself to fulfill a very important role, finding out why Joab was trying to destroy her city. She played the part of the unsung hero-the bench-warmer; the second-stringer-and did it well.

Each player on a team is vital to that team's success. The starters are important, but they aren't the only players of value. The bench provides much-needed relief and support that enables a team to succeed. Not every player will have their names written in the record books, but sometimes it's the unsung hero who changes the tempo of a game or even scores the winning goal. Today, whether you are a starter or a reserve, know that you are a valuable part of the team and that the Lord has put you in a position to contribute to the success of the group. Take the opportunity He has given you to love and serve those around you and to do it with excellence that brings Him glory.

This devotional comes from the Fellowship of Christian Athletes daily devotional.

The truth it expresses can be said of the church. You have those members who are every day players, the consistory, the Sunday school teachers, the praise team, the choir, the staff, the planners and the workers. Then you have those members who are pew sitters and wannabe pew sitters. They faithfully worship while sitting in the pew or confined to their home because of a variety of reasons who offer their gifts and prayers in support of God’s team, the church.

The point is whatever role you play in the ministry of the church it is an important role in advancing the ministry God calls us to do.

Music at St. Paul’s

HOW ST PAUL’S PIPE ORGAN INFLUENCED MY LIFE

By December 1953 I had completed over three years of private piano instruction after starting at the age of 8 years. I was already playing hymns for my Sunday School opening devotional exercises each week. I loved playing the hymns! I was also singing in the Junior Choir and attending worship services regularly.

Our music director invited the choir to attend a Christmas Candlelight Evening Service at the (then) St Pauls’ Evangelical and Reformed Church in Milltown the third week in December. She was aware of the extensive music program that the director George E. Christ had developed. (Mr. Christ served St Paul’s as Music Director an unprecedented 42 years until his retirement in 1957.)I remember being seated in the middle of the sanctuary on the left side and marveling at the beauty of the interior, which was bathed in soft candlelight. Everyone was peacefully silent. Suddenly the organ prelude began. (It was the pipe organ arrangement of Gesu Bambino – The Infant Jesus composed by Pietro Yon.) I listened in disbelief! The sounds coming from this organ were glorious! More than 60 years later I remember Mr. Christ’s thrilling rendition.

Later that evening I told my parents I wanted to learn how to play the organ. They contacted Mr. Christ and he agreed to teach me. Every two weeks I would receive lessons on St Paul’s organ. I was allowed to practice on it two evenings during the week. After four years of instruction with Mr. Christ I received my first position as an Organist and Choirmaster at St George’s Episcopal Church in Helmetta, New Jersey. During the next 51 years I continued to serve in the Ministry of Music as a second profession at various churches in the United States and Germany.

The organ at St. Paul’s was installed in 1947 by the M. P. Moeller Company, which was based in Hagerstown, Maryland. In 2017 the organ will have served 70 years in the music ministry. It has uplifted innumerable numbers of worshippers. I am praying the current and future congregational members will provide the resources to preserve and maintain this instrument, which is so important to the history of St. Paul’s and its role in worship.

HYMN SINGS

Our Summer Hymn Sings will be:

Come to the sanctuary at 9:30 am to sing some favorites before our morning worship. Requests appreciated!

Organ Fund Drive

Did you know that our pipe organ will be 70 years old in 2017? This instrument has served our worship well and should continue to do so long into the future. We do, however, have some parts that need rebuilding!

Our organ includes many leather and felt components, that at 70 years of age, are quite brittle. For example, the mechanisms that open and close the shades and control the overall volume are gradually failing.

St. Paul’s has an Organ Fund to deal with major repairs such as these. Over the coming weeks and months, we will be

soliciting donations to this fund. Expect to see an envelope in the mail inviting you to contribute.

For more details about the work or the organ itself, talk to Emily. She would be happy to answer questions or give you a tour of this large instrument!
