4Howdy and welcome to Texas A&M University!I am pleased to welcome the attendees of the 2013 AHEAD in Texas conference to Texas A&M University. Texas A&M is excited to host this conference and support the important work that you do to make college campuses welcoming environments for individuals with disabilities.I am thrilled that you have chosen to locate the AHEAD in Texas Conference in the Memorial Student Center. The MSC was closed for renovations for three years and re-opened in April of 2012. This fall, the MSC was named co-winner of the 2012 Texas Governor's Committee on People with Disabilities (GCPD)/Accessibility Specialists Association (APA) Accessibility Award for going “above and beyond the legal requirements to provide both physical and service accessibility to people with disabilities.” We are proud of this beautiful building that combines the traditional Memorial Student Center look and feel with modern and state-of-the-art facilities.I encourage you to take time during your conference to explore the campus. I hope that you find it to be friendly and accessible and are able to learn about some of the traditions that we hold so dear. While traditions are important to us, many exciting new things are happening on campus with the construction and renovation of classroom and office buildings as well as a new state of the art residence hall and Corps of Cadets learning centers. Our student population is growing each year and we are excited by the prospect of our new initiative to increase engineering students’ enrollment in the Texas A&M System to 25,000 by the year 2025. We continue to develop leaders of tomorrow who go out into the world to do great things.Best wishes on a successful conference!

11Opening Keynote AddressThursday, April 18th“Should I divulge my disability in the age of Google?” and other concerns for transition for school to workJoe Bontke, U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission Room: MSC 2400 (9:00-10:45 am)The risk of “being labeled by a disability” comes with the realization that accommodation requirements run the gamut from none to many. With the popularity of social sites like Facebook and LinkedIn, employers can gain access to all sorts of information that would normally be “off limits” during an interview. Could this be creating a legal problem for employers and another hurdle for the transitioning student? In this lively session EEOC’s Joe Bontke will spell out the risks and offer some remedy for the new risk of social network “investigating” when an applicant has some “Google issues” while “On the Track to Success”.Joe Bontke is the outreach manager and ombudsman for the Houston District office of US. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. Joe has been in the field of Human Resources & Civil Rights for the past 27 years and has experience in employment law and adult education. With a Bachelor’s in Philosophy and a Masters in Education, he has been a Human Resources Director, a Training Coordinator for the American Disabilities Act (ADA) Technical Assistance Center for Federal Region VI, was appointed as Assistant Professor at Baylor College of Medicine and recently has been named Chair of the Governors’ Committee for People with Disabilities by Governor Rick Perry. Using his entertaining style, Joe has educated groups throughout the country and most recently, his work at the EEOC has enabled him to empower employers and employees with the understanding that they need to work effectively at their jobs. Joe’s philosophy of education is - that 90% is knowing where to find the information ... when you need it.

The issue is to what extent are principals and guidance counselors helping or hindering these students. In this session, participants will discuss how they can better work with high schools and create a seamless transition for students and create a community of self-advocates.With Hearing Loss: Technology is on Your SideOlivia Rains, Department of Assistive and Rehabilitative Services Room: MSC 2406 BTechnology changes rapidly. In Texas, we are fortunate to have contractors with the DARS Office for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Services who receive extensive training on assistive technology for persons who have hearing loss. Kurzweil is key for many students, such as students with dyslexia, ADD/ADHD, VI, mobility challenges, bilingual, but also benefits those simply having a hard time making the transition into college study/reading life. The importance of including Student Learning Outcomes will be emphasized. Participants will be walked through the process of how to develop a Disability Services Strategic Plan and Mission Statement.Project HIRE - Helping Individuals Reach EmploymentMaria Solis-Morin, University of Texas Pan American Santa E. Pena, South Texas College Leigh Ann Godinez, Department of Assistive and Rehabilitative Services Room: MSC 2406 BDRS Project HIRE is an innovative program to support individuals with severe developmental disabilities to complete post-secondary education at South Texas College and gain employment. Through this initiative, DARS will supplement the Vocational Rehabilitation (VR) Program with wraparound services not currently provided by VR to assist participants with one to one supports such as educational coaches, extensive individual and family support and individualized assistive technology.Successful Strategies for Study Abroad AccommodationsAlicia Guevara, Texas A&M University - College Station Room: MSC 2401This roundtable discussion will focus on the various types of study abroad programs and will provide a process for helping determine appropriate accommodations for the various program types. We will have case studies to show the practical application of the process. How do we assist these deserving, mature students in making a radical transition from the military to college life and expectations?

This session will familiarize you with the new 2012 guidelines from AHEAD, give you suggestions for transitioning to documentation expectations consistent with the spirit as well as the letter of the ADAAA, and orient you to a heightened focus on determining reasonable accommodations rather than deciding if a person has a disability.
