Many adult learners, including native and non-native English speakers, lack the vocabulary needed to comprehend complex text, making upward educational and job transitions difficult or impossible. High Impact Indicators can provide a clear roadmap for filling in the gaps in adult education math programs. A number of students lack some of the fundamental skills that will help them pass the GED® Math test. In fact, problem solving itself can often be the greatest hindrance to students passing the test. This double session will explore skills students need when they can’t use a calculator, strategies that will help them translate and solve problems, and activities to help students address some of those higher math level skills.

Four agencies have committed to provide a holistic experience which leads to the completion of the high school equivalency and transition to employment or further education.

Reasoning Through Language Arts (RLA) is composed of multiple item types in addition to the extended response. All of the skills required for success in the multiple-choice items are also part of the “capstone” component of the RLA test-- constructed response. This session will focus on the integration of reading and writing skills as being critical to successful student performance and will provide teachers with tools and resources to improve students writing skills and thus earn higher scores on the test.
