1.2 Environmental Information

1.2.1 Physical Altitude -110-180m.Geology - The quarry is rccognised as a Regionally Important Geological Site (citation dated 26/7/96, although its geological interest has been known for many years). The top quarry scction is through Upper Inferior Oolite, while the bottom quarry is in the upper scction of Lower Inferior Oolite. A steep cliff face surrounds the west and north side of the lower quarry showing beds of Freestone separated by marly rubble partings. Scree from the face and loose blocks of Freestone occur by a dugout in the southwest comer. The rest of the surface is gravelly.

The upper quarry has been worked in terraces. The floor is the uncomformity surface and resembles the sea floor of the Upper Trigonia Grit time. Some of the large bedding planes display clumps of fossil oysters adhering to the surface while others are bare. Above this the beds have been quarried out or pushed to one side, forming banks of loose stones and boulders. Many marine fossils can be found over the upper quarry.

The bedding planes are being slowly broken-up by weathering. Small amounts of soil and scree are eroding from the upper slopes forming a marly-rubbly soil.

A more detailed description of the geology and fossil fauna can be found in ‘Geological Excursions in the Bristol District’ (1977).

Soils - Mainly thin, freely-draining calcareous Brown rendzinas, with areas of scrce slope. Heavier soils in the north-west comer but not waterlogged.

Topography and Aspect - The woodland occupies gentle to steeply-sloping south-east to north-west facing ground. The quarry provides a full range of aspects and slopes, from flat ground to vertical rock faces.

Water Regime - There are no springs or standing water.

1.2.2 Biological

HabitatsThe site supports a rich variety of habitats, from sparsely vegetated quarry surfaces, through herb-rich grassland to scrub and ancient semi-natural and replanted woodland. Full descriptions of these habitats are given below (based on those given in the 1993-97 Management Plan), linked to compartment numbers. Habitats and the locations of notable species are shown on Maps 3 and 4.

The woodland supports the following National Vegetation Classification (NVC) types;W8b Fraxinus excelsior - Acer campeslre - Mercurialis perennis woodland; Anemone nemorosa subcommunityW8f Fraxinus excelsior - Acer campestre - Mercurialis perennis woodland; Allium ursinum subcommunityW12a Fagus sylvatica - Mercurialis perennis woodland; Mercurialis perennis sub-community

Grassland, scrub and tall herb NVC have not been fully established but probably include:CG5 Bromus erectus - Brachypodium pinnatum grasslandCG7 Festuca ovina - Hieracium pilosella - Thymuspraecox/pulegioides grassland W21 Crataegus monogyna - Hedera helix scrub OV27 Epilobium angustifolium community

Scrub grassland adjacent to road (Cpt 5d): Area of scrub, grassland and scree that extends from the main entrance to the edge of Millend Wood in the north-east corner. The mix of short sward grassland, tall herb scrub and woodland edge species includes Kidney Vetch, Columbine (Aquilegia vulgaris), Greater Knapweed, Common Knapweed (<Centaurea nigra), Harebell (Campanula rotundifolia), Wild Basil (Clinopodium wlgare), Hedge Bedstraw (Galium mollugo), Upright Brome, Creeping Thistle (Cirsium arvense), Hemp-agrimony, Bittersweet (Solatium dulcamara), Woodruff (Galium odoratum) and Common Spotted-orchid (Dactylorhiza fuchsii). Scrub and tree saplings include Ash, Dogwood, Pedunculate Oak and Silver Birch. Bloody Crane’s-bill (Geranium sanguineum) is one of many ‘garden escapes’ that grows near the main entrance.

Scrub/woodland mounds (Cpts 5a & 5c): There arc several small mounds scattered around the site, some apparently natural, others created by spoil from the quarry workings. The deeper soils support scrub, trees and tall herb cover. The most frequent trees arc Ash and Sycamore, ranging from seedlings to semi-mature trees. Shrubs include Elder, Hazel, Dogwood, Wayfaring-tree, Goat Willow, Dog-rose, Wild Privet (Ligustrum vulgare). Bramble and Raspberry (Rubus idaeus). Climbers include Traveller's- joy, Bittersweet, White Bryony (Bryonia dioica), Ivy (Hedera helix) and Honeysuckle (Lonicera periclymenum). Dense patches of Rosebay Willowherb and Hcmp-agrimony are present.

Woodland edge (Cpt 4): Millcnd Wood surrounds most of the quarry, with a bank of loose stones and soil forming much of the boundary. In the south and south-east scrub merges into the wood but in the north-west and north, where it joins the upper quarry, the woodland edge is more clearly defined. Woodland edge trees include coppiced Ash, Pedunculate Oak and Beech (Fagus sylvatica), with Field Maple (Acer campestre), Spindle (Euonymus europaeus), Hazel, Silver Birch, Scots Pine (Pima sylvestris), Dogwood and Wayfaring-tree. Woodland flowers include Yellow Archangel (Lamiastrum galeobdolon), Woodruff, Nettle-leaved Bellflower (Campanula trachelium), Primrose, Dog's Mercury (Mercurialis perennis), Wood-sedge (Care.x sylvatica), Wood Meadow-grass (Poa nemoralis). Hairy Brome (Bromopsis ramosa) and locally frequent Fingered Sedge (Carex digitata) and Greater Butterfly-orchid (Platanthera chlorantha).

Plantation (Cpt 6): Adjacent to the compound is an area of disturbed ground with a mixed plantation that includes Beech, Hazel and Silver Birch. The disturbed ground supports a mix of low growing herbs and taller plants, including Weld (Reseda luteola). Viper’s Bugloss, Long-stalked Crane's-bill (Geranium columbinum) and Common Gromwell (Lithospermum officinale).

Millend Wood (Cpts 1,2 & 3): This is mostly ancient semi-natural woodland, with parts mature and recent plantations on an ancient site. It is mainly an old coppice wood of Beech and Whitcbcam, with locally frequent Ash, Sycamore and Wild Cherry and a rich shrub layer including Spindle, Midland Hawthorn (Crataegus laevigata). Crab Apple (Malus sylvestris), Wayfaring-tree and Spurgc-laurel (Daphne laureola). The cl960 plantation area (Cpt 2) comprises Beech and Larch (Larix decidua) over a sparse understorey and shrub layer. Other recent small plantations within the semi-natural area consist mainly of Hazel and Field Maple. The top edge of the wood has areas of very dense hazel coppice and other shrubs to 90% cover with no real canopy trees except a few scattered beech, Pedunculate Oak and Silver Birch and locally frequent Turkey Oak (Quercus cerris).

Overall the understorey is patchy to 10-15m but includes Wild Service-tree (Sorbus torminalis) and Small-leaved Lime (Tilia cordata), plus Silver Birch, Wych Elm and Field Maple. There are patches of locally frequent Ash and Beech regeneration where canopy opening has occurred. The wood is mainly NVC W12 with small areas of Ash and Wild Cherry dominated NVC W8 on flatter, higher ground and secondary birch, ash and sycamore at the quarry edges. Some of the W12 areas have a high % cover of Ash and Sycamore coppice, over a sparse shrub layer of Elder and Holly (Ilex aquifolium) but still contain relict Beech and Whitebeam coppice. Small areas of high forest beech (c60-80 years old) to 30m occur along the southern edge. Most of the coppice is old growth, possibly cut during the 1940s- 50s. Scattered mature 150+ year old Pedunculate Oaks occur along the south-western boundary.

The ground flora is typical of W12 and VV8 woodland along the Cotswold scarp. Ivy and Dog's Mercury arc abundant, plus a fine range of the usual ancient woodland species, including Wood Anemone (Anemone nemorosa), Early Dog-violet (Viola reichenbachiana), Wood-sedge, Yellow Archangel, Barren Strawberry (Potentilla slerilis), Lords-and-Ladies (Arum maculatum), False-bromc, Wood Spurge, Woodruff, Wood Sage, Spurge-laurcl, Bluebell* (Hyacinthoides non-scripta), Wood Mclick (Metica uniflora), Primrose, Hairy Wood-rush (Luzula pilosa) and Sanicle (Saniada europaea). Ramsons (Allium ursinum) is dominant over large parts of the lower slopes. Fingered Sedge is locally frequent. The ground flora of part of the eastern end (cpt 3h) is sparse, as the wood is currently open to cattle grazing, with scattered Dog’s Mercury, Early Dog-violet, Bluebell, Primrose and Lords-and- Ladies.

There are extensive sections of old wood bank lined by old Beech, Whitebeam and Hazel coppice

1.2.3 Cultural

Archive information for Millcnd Wood is limited to eighteenth and nineteenth century tithe, county and OS maps. The wood is shown (unnamed) on Sir Isaac Taylor’s 1777 map of Gloucestershire and the First Edition (cl830) O.S. map. The wood is depicted on an 1846 tithe map of North Nibley, when it was called ‘Brakehearts Hill Wood’ and covered an area of 33 acres, 2 roods, 36 poles (I3.6ha.).

Breakheart Quarry / Millend woodManagement Plan 2015

12

12

Taylor’s 1777 map appears to show woodland covering the whole of what is now the quarry area. The date of first quarrying is unknown but the 1830 map shows a cleared area and an 1882 map depicts an operational quarry. Woodward in 1894 and Richardson in 1910 refer to the geological sections in the quarry. The quarry re-opened in 1956 to provide stone for building Berkeley Power Station. Working finished in 1972. During quarrying top and sub-soil was dumped in various parts of the quarry edge. The site was used for pressure testing but recently served no operational purpose.

GWM has been carrying out habitat, access and survey/monitoring management since 1989 to 2009.

2.2 Management Objectives

• To fulfil all legal obligations.• To maintain and enhance the woodland and grassland habitats.• To maintain and enhancc populations of notable spccies.• To maintain the geological features.• To provide for public access and educational use.• To maintain and enhancc the landscape value.

2.3 Rationale

The site has important ancient woodland, grassland and scrub habitats, geological exposures and flora and fauna, which include many national and local rarities. The 25 year programme aims to continue the habitat, species and access enhancement carried out since management work began in 1989.

For a long period minimal woodland work (small-scale coppicing and thinning) was done because of the need to maintain an integral sound barrier. However a greater amount of work was carried out during the period 2002-2007 to increase the structural diversity of the semi-natural areas and begin reversion the

plantation areas to predominantly broad-leaved woodland. A continuation of this felling and thinning of conifers, beech and sycamore and coppicing/pollarding of beech, whitcbeam and sycamore around previously planted areas will continue. This aims to benefit recent broadlcaved plantings and encourage natural regeneration of beech and other native broadleaved trees and shrubs. Some small-scale restocking with hazel and other native shrubs to increase the area of suitable habitat for dormice should continue.

Rotational scrub clearance will continue in the quarry and woodland edge to maintain areas of herb-rich grassland and the most inport ant areas for butterflies and other invertebrates. Butterfly populations have been regularly monitored in recent years; this should continue, ideally at least every two years. The general invertebrate interest is high and needs monitoring at regular intervals. Some invertebrate groups have not been fully recorded for 10-15 years.

One of the most important site features is the population of dormice. These have bred in the ncst-boxcs for many years. Monitoring of these boxes is to continue, with additional boxes gradually erectcd as the area of hazel coppice increases with the restocking mentioned above.

Survey and monitoring over the past 10-15 years has concentrated on the most important species and groups, resulting in some potentially important specics and groups not having been surveyed. The site potentially supports interesting bat, small mammal and reptile populations and the status of some spccies not recorded for many years, such as glow-worm, need establishing. A full botanical survey has not been carried out since the early 1990s and fungi have not been fully recorded.

A public footpath crosses the quarry linking either end of the wood. A nature trail path was created through the wood as one of the first tasks completed in the late 1980s. This, along with the footpath, is quite well used. The nature trail path should continue to be maintained, including clearance of fallen trees and step repairs as required. As well as habitat and access management the plan includes for routine maintenance of boundaries, such as repairs to fences and walls.
