3. THE LOST YOUNGER SON AND THE ELDEST (15,11-32)

11 He said:

«A man had two SONS; 12 the younger of them said to the FATHER:“FATHER, GIVE-me the share of property that is coming to me”.And he divided between them his wealth. 13 Not many days later, having gathered ALL TOGETHER, the younger SON took a journey into a far country. And there, he wasted his property in reckless living. 14 Having spent everything, there was a strong famine in that country and he began to be in need. 15 Having departed, he joined himself to one of the citizens of that country and he sent him into his fields to feed the swine.

16 He would gladly have filled his stomach with the pods that the swine ate; but no one GAVE him anything. 17 Having come to himself he said:

“How many HIRED-MEN of my FATHER abound in bread and I perish here by famine.

18 Having risen, I will go to my FATHER and I will say to him: «FATHER, I have sinned against Heaven and before you; 19 I am not worthy to be called your SON; make me as one of your HIRED MEN ”». 20 Having risen, he went to his FATHER. Being still far away, his FATHER saw him and, felt compassion and running, he fell on his neck and kissed him. 21 The SON said to him: “FATHER, I have sinned against Heaven and before you; I am not worthy to be called your SON”.

22 The FATHER said to his SERVANTS: “Quickly, bring the first robe and put it on him,GIVE a ring on his hand and sandals on his feet;

23 and get the fattened calf, and kill it.

and let us eat, AND CELEBRATE, 24 FOR THIS MY SON WAS DEAD AND HE HAS COME BACK TO LIFE, HE WAS LOST AND IS FOUND”.And they began to CELEBRATE.

25 His eldest SON was in the field. And as he came and drew near to the house, he heard music and dancing. 26 And calling one of the SERVANTS, he asked about what it might be. 27 He said to him: “Your BROTHER has come and your FATHER has killed the fattened calf because he has got him back safe and sound”. 28 Then he became angry and he would not go in. Then his FATHER, coming out, called him.

29 Answering, he said to his FATHER: “Look, for so many years I HAVE BEEN SERVING YOU and I have never transgressed a command of yours,

but you have never GIVEN me a young goat that I might CELEBRATE with my friends.

30 But when YOUR SON THIS ONE who has devoured your wealth with prostitutes came back, you killed for him the fattened calf!”

31 He said to him: “(My) CHILD, you are ALWAYS with me and ALL that is mine IS YOURS.

4. FAITHFUL TO GOD AND TO ONE’S NEIGHBOUR (16,1-31)

COMPOSITION OF THE SUB-SEQUENCE

16,1 He said to the disciples:  «THERE WAS A RICH MAN who had a steward who was denounced to him as wasting his goods. 2 Having called this one, he said to him: “What is this I hear about you? Give me an accounting of your management for you can no longer be steward”. 3 The steward said to himself: “What shall I do since my master is taking the management away from me? Dig, I cannot; Go begging, I am ashamed.

4 I know what I shall DO SO THAT, WHEN I will be removed from the management,THEY MAY WELCOME ME INTO THEIR HOUSES”.

5 Having summoned each one of his master’s debtors, he said to the first: “How much do you owe my master?” 6 he said: “A hundred measures of oil”. He said to him: “Take your bill, sit down and quickly write: fifty”. 7 Then he said to another: “And you, how much do you owe?’ He said: “A hundred measures of wheat”. He said to him: “Take your bill and write: eighty”. 8 And the master praised the unrighteous steward for he had acted shrewdly. Indeed, the sons of this world are shrewder than the sons of light with their own kind.

9 And I say to you: Make for yourself friends by unrighteous Mammon, SO THAT, WHEN it will fail THEY MAY WELCOME YOU IN THE ETERNAL DWELLINGS. 10 He who is faithful in what is least is faithful also in much and he who is unrighteous in what is least is unrighteous also in much. 11 Therefore if you did not become faithful in the unrighteous Mammon, who will entrust to you the true riches? 12 And if you did not become faithful in what is another’s, who will give you your very own? 13 No servant can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one and love the other or else he will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and the Mammon». 14 And the Pharisees, friends of money, heard all these things and were sneering at him.

15 He said to them: «You are the very ones who justify yourselves before men but God knows your hearts, for what is exalted among men is an abomination before God. 16 THE LAW AND THE PROPHETS were until John; from then onwards the Kingdom of God is proclaimed and everyone seeks to take possession of it. 17 It is easier for heaven and earth to pass away that for just one stroke of a letter of THE LAW to fail. 18 Everyone who repudiates his own wife and marries another is adulterous and whoever marries a repudiated woman by her husband is adulterous».

19 [Now he said also another parable:] «THERE WAS A RICH MAN who dressed in purple and fine linen, feasting magnificently every day. 20 A poor man named Lazarus was laid at his gate, covered with sores, 21 desiring to be fed with what fell from the rich man’s table. But even dogs came and licked his sores. 22 It happened that the poor man died and HE WAS CARRIED BY THE ANGELS TO ABRAHAM’S BREAST; even the rich man died and was buried. 23 In Hades lifting up his eyes, being in torments, he saw Abraham far away and Lazarus in his breast. 24 He cried out: “Father Abraham, have mercy on me and send Lazarus so that he may dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue for I am tormented in this flame”. 25 Abraham said to him: ‘My child, remember that you received your good things in your lifetime and likewise Lazarus evil things; but now he is comforted here and you are tormented.

26 Moreover, between you and us has been fixed A GREAT CHASM,so that those who want to pass from here to you cannot and nor can those from that place pass to us”. 27 He said: “I beg you, father, to send him to my father’s house, 28 for I have five brothers, so that he may warn them lest they also come in this place of torment”. 29 Abraham said: “They have MOSES AND THE PROPHETS; let them hear them!” 30 He said: “No, Father Abraham, but if someone from the dead may come to them, they will repent”. 31 He said to him: “If they do not hear MOSES AND THE PROPHETS, even if someone should rise from the dead, they will not be convinced.”»

36 Hearing a crowd passing by, he inquired WHAT IT WAS THIS. 37 They announced him: «Jesus the Nazorean is passing by!» 38 He shouted saying: «Jesus, SON OF DAVID, have mercy on me!» 39 Those who went-before rebuked him to keep silence.

But he cried out all the more: «SON OF DAVID, have mercy on me!» 40 Jesus, stopped, commanded him to be brought to him. Having drawn near, he asked him:

41 «What do you want me to do for you?» He said: «LORD, let me see-again.» 42 Jesus said to him: «See-again! Your FAITH has SAVED you.»

43 And immediately he saw again and he followed him glorifying God; and all the people, having seen, gave praise to God.

19,1 Having come in, he passed through Jericho. 2 And behold a man called with name of Zacchaeus, and he was a chief of tax collectors and he was rich.

3 He WAS SEEKING TO see Jesus WHO HE WAS.

BUT HE COULD NOT because of the crowd, for he was of short stature. 4 And running ahead, he climbed up a sycamore to see him for he was going to pass that way.

5 When he went to the place, lifting-the-eyes, Jesus said to him: «Zacchaeus, come down, hurry! For today I am to stay at your house.» 6 And he hurried down and welcomed him joyfully. 7 Seeing that, they all complained saying: «He has gone to be a guest with a sinner man!»

8 Stood, Zacchaeus said to the LORD: «Look: half of my goods, LORD, to the poor I give; and if I have extorted anything from anyone, I give back to him fourfold.»

9 Jesus said to him: «Today SALVATION has come to this house, because he also is a SON OF ABRAHAM! 10 For the SON OF MAN has come to seek and TO SAVE what was lost.»

1. THE PARABLE OF THE TALENTS (MATT 25,14-30)

: 14 «Just as a man going on a journey called his own servant and entrusted to them his goods: 15 to one he gave five talents, to another two, and to another one,

: each one according to his own power, and he immediately went away.--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------+ 16 Having gone the man who five talents had received

. worked with them and gained five more.+ 17 Likewise the man (of) two

. gained two more.+ 18 But the man who one had received,

. having departed, dug the ground and hid the money of his master.--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

: 19 After a long time, comes the master of those servants: and lifts the word with them.

+ 20 Having come the man who five talents had received + brought five other talents saying:

: «Master, five talents you entrusted me; look, five other talents I have gained.»

= 21 His master said to him:- «Well, good and faithful servant, over a little you have been faithful, I will set you over much;- Enter into the joy of your master.»

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------+ 22 And having come even the man of two talents, + he said:

: «Master, two talents you entrusted me; look, two other talents I have gained.»

= 23 His master said to him:- «Well, good and faithful servant, over a little you have been faithful, I will set you over much;- Enter into the joy of your master.»

– 24 Having come even the man who one talent had received said: - «Master, I know you that you are a hard man- reaping where you have not sown and gathering where you have not scattered.

: 25 Fearing, having departedI have hidden your talent in the ground;: look, you have what is yours.»

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------– 26 Answering his master said to him:

- «Wicked and lazy servant, you knew that- I reap where I have not sown and gather where I have not scattered.

: 27 Therefore you should throw my money the bankers: and coming I would have recovered what was my own with interest.

– 28 Therefore, take the talent from him+ and give-(it) to the man who has the ten talents.»

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 29 For to everyone who has will be given and he will have-more-than-enough but the one who has not even what he has will be taken away.-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

– 30 And the worthless servant throw him into the outer darkness;– there will be weeping and grinding of teeth.»
