Our achievements in 2012/13

Nationally:

National Better For Everyone project (www.betterforeveryone.wordpress.com), funded through LSIS involved 4 regions working together to embed equality outcomes into Teaching Learning and Assessment.

Revised Association mission, vision and values includes explicit reference to equality (include here). 85.2% of respondents in the WEAs 2013 staff survey agreed or strongly agreed that the WEA has incorporated ED principles into its core values and beliefs.

Improvements made to website, use of social media and production of videos to reflect this message (links here)

Appointment of Strategic Lead for Equality and Diversity with oversight across all functions within the Association

Diversity award included in the first WEA national awards scheme -won by Tandustri project, West Midlands. The other awards and nominations showcased the excellent work across the WEA to promote Equality, Diversity and Inclusion and included the Inclusive Archaeology Education project in Yorkshire and Humber, the Women Loves Learning group in the East Midlands, the WEA Activ8 for Carers group and the Womens groups based at the Clovelly Centre.

Tutor and Governance induction training materials have been developed to include EDI.

Work to update and develop Womens Learning Programme courses taking place, Women into Maths, Women into Politics etc. Emerging womens education network to share practice across the Association. http://weawomenslearningprogramme.wordpress.com/

ALS and LSF used effectively to retain students and support their achievements.

Ofsted Learner Views survey report that 82% of students believe that they are treated fairly.

The 2013 staff survey shows that 93.1% of respondents understand their responsibilities in relation to equality and diversity

The 2013 WEA Impact of Community Learning report demonstrated that WEA courses contribute to :

improved health and wellbeing for students with mental health difficulties,

assisting students, in particular those who may be the most vulnerable in society in developing stronger and more connected families

reducing cultural and ethnic isolation and conflict and increase community cohesiveness through its community ESOL provision

Regionally:

Eastern region work on E and D with prisons

Y and H RFU rugby LDD students and Archaeology course (link to website) |Out of the box http://yh.wea.org.uk/courses/out-of-the-box

West Midlands -Tandustri project http://www.westmidlands.wea.org.uk/health-education, work developed with mental health service users

East Midlands - WLL group http://womenleadinglearning.wordpress.com/, project to embed EDI in OTLA through Peer review , work with prisons and mental health service users

North West - Just the ticket partnership with Money Advice service in Merseyside to develop/adapt resources for the deaf community

North East - Greening Wingrove project working with the BAMER community on a number of projects including a heritage project. Promotion of community cohesion through a sewing for social purpose course.

25 % of all students are BAMER students

2.8% achievement gap overall in BAMER success rates (2.6% in 11/12, 3.3% in 10/11).

4.7% of students studying cultural studies courses in 12/13 as compared to 21.3% in Community Involvement and 56.1% in SCTL.

Only 2.7% of students studying history are BAMER students

Other areas with high BAMER participation rates are:

Linguistics (community interpreting) - 93.7% (High success rates all students 80.8%, BAMER 81.2%)

Preparation for life and work 39.8% (high success rates 92.9% all students , 93.4% BAMER)

Skills for volunteers -35.8% (high success rates - 88.7% all students , 92.1% BAMER)

Teaching and Lecturing 24.7% (3.6% gap in achievement rates)
