PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

During the summer months, CBA members enjoyed several special events at the Bridge Center.

Thanks to Jodie Kieffer for running a very successful June STaC with more than 300 tables in play at the Bridge Center during the week-long event. STaC games were also held at our Unit’s outlying game locations in Oxford and at the New England Club in Anderson.

Extra special thanks to Jodie for chairing and donating her services as director for our Bridge Center’s first “Player Appreciation Party” on Sunday, August 18, with free bridge for all regular bridge center players. The delicious potluck dinner that evening was organized by Elena Hickman. Thanks, Elena! Their efforts were enjoyed by more than 100 CBA players. The success of this event indicates that it will surely become an annual event.

The four-month Mentor/Mentee Program concluded with a Party at the Bridge Center on September 13. Thanks to Nancy Sachs for organizing the event this year and thanks to the Mentees who brought all the great food for the pot luck dinner. Special thanks to all the experienced Mentors who helped so many of our less experienced players!

Here’s some very good news about the Bridge Center: We’ve had the ceiling leaks repaired and the carpet cleaned and, after conducting a free inspection of the building, the Hamilton County Health Department confirmed what we had been told by the insurance adjuster . . .we do not have any mold in the ceiling or in the carpet at the Bridge Center!

At the May Board meeting, the finance Committee reported that the CBA will probably lose almost $10,000 in 2002. Therefore, the Board decided to raise the fee for individual players from $4.50 to $5.00 and raise the rental for non-CBA games from $7.00 to $9.00 per table.

We have a CBA Board of Trustees Election coming up. Look at page 4 of this ALERT to review the resumes of the players running for the Board. The Board is composed of fifteen members. Each year our Unit membership elects five board members to a three-year term. After one term, board members may be reelected once more, but they cannot serve more than two consecutive full terms. Come out and vote during our Fall Sectional at the Sharonville Convention Center, November 8-10. If you can’t attend the Sectional, please see page 5 and follow the “Absentee Voting Instructions.”

Check the ALERT for lots of other special games and parties coming up this Fall and Winter. I think you will enjoy playing in these events. See you there!

Respectfully,

Linda WolberPresident

2 Sessions - 12:00 Noon & TBAAll players qualifying at the Club Level are eligible. It is not necessary to play with the partner with whom you qualified. You MUST play both sessions to qualify for the District Final. You need a 50% game, or you must be in the top 50% of your field in Flights B or C (which means it is possible for Flights B & C to qualify with less than a 50% game), to be eligible to compete at the District Final on Saturday, Nov. 9 at our Fall Sectional. The winning pair in each of the three Flights at the District Final will win the opportunity to represent our District 11 at the National Final during the Spring NABC, March 6-16, 2003, in Philadelphia. Winners also receive funding for their trip to the Nationals.

Come out and play -- win the right to represent District 11 at the ACBL Nationals this spring!!

CBA ELECTION TO BE HELD AT FALL SECTIONALElection of five members to the Cincinnati Bridge Association Board of Trustees will take place at the Fall Sectional at the Sharonville Convention Center, November 8-10. Polls will open one hour before the afternoon and evening sessions on Friday and Saturday, and one hour before the beginning of play on Sunday morning. Write-in candidates’ petitions should be submitted to the Executive Secretary, Joy Norris, no later than October 15. Absentee voting instructions for members unable to vote in person follow the candidates’ profiles below.

CECELIA (“SIS”) GLEISINGER Today I am writing to you to ask for your vote in the upcoming election for new board members. I am currently holding a position on the Board that was vacated earlier in the year. My first job on the Board was at the June StaC coordinating all the hospitality for that week. The next event that has me busy (with the help of numerous other CBA members) is the CBA Charity Bash which will be held on Sunday, Oct. 6th. I realize none of this is possible without the support of my family. Joe, my husband, and our six children have been very patient and supportive of my activities on the Board. I believe our Board and its members are dedicated and hard working individuals who use their time and resources to benefit us all. I thank you for your consideration and support.

RALPH ISAACS Over two years ago I was appointed to the CBA Board of Directors to complete the term of a departing board member. My principal activities have been the purchase of the Duplimate, as well as training the directors to use it. Starting in February of this year, I’ve been keeping busy as the CBA Treasurer. My major goal, in representing you, is to keep the Bridge Center as friendly and accommodating to its members as possible.

JOSEPH LUTZ I began playing duplicate in Dallas, Texas, in 1960. From 1966 until 1972 I served the Dallas unit as Tournament Chairman and board member. In 1973, when we moved to Northern Michigan, I taught beginning and intermediate bridge at the area community college and started a local duplicate game. Since 1986 I have been a member of our Cincinnati unit and, as I have now begun to work only part-time, I know I would have the time to devote to service of our unit as a Board member and in some way pay back, in service, a great game and hobby which has been a part of my life for the past forty years.

PAT NEWMAN If elected to the CBA Board, I would make any effort possible to ensure that you are able to enjoy friendly, fun bridge sessions. I feel that accomplishing that, we may be able to entice some of our novice players to our side of the room which would create a better bridge world for all players. I have been a certified director for 25 years and was a board member in Detroit for 16 years. Having directed many, many games over the years, I feel my experience would be beneficial to the CBA.

ALEX PAPPAS As the former manager of the Bridge Center for three years, I have always worked hard to make the Bridge Center a viable and pleasant venue. Having served on the CBA Board six years previously, now after a year’s hiatus I am running again.

FRED POLLACK I am a college professor of mathematics and a statistical consultant. I was a very serious bridge player in the mid-90s, representing Canada in many world championships with high overall finishes in events such as the Rosenblum Cup. Nowadays, my bridge interests are more directed towards teaching, promoting and writing. I have been a CBA Board member (appointed to fill a vacant term) for the last two years, chairing many different committees. I would appreciate your vote to continue my work for the members of the CBA.

JERRY VIOLETTA(Q) Tell us about yourself. (A) I’m the retired guy who always wears a baseball cap and shops at the thrift shop next door.(Q) What is your experience with the CBA? (A) I have been an active member since the 70s, having been on the Board for two terms. I was the one who approached the Board about having a bridge center. Voila – Norwood! I enlisted the membership to vote in term limits. I was also an involved member in the last two Cincinnati Nationals.(Q) Why do you want to be on the CBA Board? (A) It’s my turn again.(Q) Why should we vote for you? (A) My experience with the Board and my ability to work as a team member. Also being both a day and a night player, I know 90% of the members and, as their representative, I can present to the Board their concerns and views.

LINDA WOLBER As a current Board member, my 3-year term is coming to an end and I would very much appreciate your vote for another term. For over 20 years I have served the bridge community, beginning with chairing “Play Bridge for Kids” plus many other special events. I also teach beginning bridge and currently direct and teach bridge on cruise ships. During

previous terms on the Board, I served as Vice-President and President and chaired numerous committees. I have enjoyed being your President again this past year. If reelected, you will have two people working very hard for the CBA. That other person is my husband.

IMPORTANT NOTICE TO MEMBERS OF CBA

CBA Parking and Building Use

Following the roof leaks we have experienced, we sat down with our landlord to review a number of items relevant to the CBA Bridge Center occupancy on Cooper Road.

1) The owners have paid to have our carpet cleaned due to the leaks. They will also replace all ceiling tiles at no cost to us. We do not have mold.

2) PARKING – Our lease states we have exclusive use of the rear lot, with the exception of access to the loading dock. We also have the right to use a few of the handicapped spaces in front of the building, since there is no handicapped ramp in the rear of the building.

We are abusing our parking privileges!

During any day games during the week, do not park in front of the building unless you have a handicapped sticker. Then be sure to park only in the outlined, designated handicapped parking spaces.

Do not park on the drive on the side of the building except when the rear lot is full.

There are other tenants in the building who utilize these parking spaces. Please follow these rules.

3) Our public address system (microphone) carries through the dead space above our ceiling tiles and often disturbs other tenants. Directors, please keep the volume control down to a minimum. Players, please be quiet during announcements so the director doesn’t have to turn up the volume.

Please remember, we are not the only tenants in the building and they are as important as we are. Thoughtfulness is paramount.

Thanks, for cooperating,

Bill HigginsHouse Committee

The Zero Tolerance Committee Reporton

The Gentle Art of the InsultOnce again your venerable chairman comes before you to urge us all to be exemplars of kindness and of courtesy. Lately I’ve been deluged with complaints about rudeness and boorishness at the table. Here is an example of how these altercations escalate:

“You’re late! We have three boards to play!” (A slight misdemeanor)

“You’re always late!” (The slight misdemeanor has now become a major character flaw.)

“Everybody knows you’re always late!” (This has now elevated into an egregious scandal, worthy of a class action suit.)

Please! Let’s lighten up and display a little patience.

Another technique of intimidation is the calling for the director at every little whipstitch. Every sigh, every glance, every moment of hesitation evokes the spine-chilling call -- DIRECTOR!”Please! Let’s have a modicum of forbearance in these matters.

I’ve observed that all of these disputes involve two participants, each of whom thinks he is in the right. Well, Aristotle taught that if two people disagree, they both can be wrong but they both cannot be right! Therefore, let’s not complain about the speck in another’s eye and ignore the plank in our own.

The purpose of the Zero Tolerance Committee, and indeed all of us, is to resolve the unresolvable, to right the unrightable, and to bring peace where strife prevails. Let us all be exemplars of kindness, courtesy and forbearance, and make our little club a happy place to be!

Walter S. BunkerChairman of the Zero Tolerance Committee

BECOMING A BRIDGE EXPERT -- PART 1by

Fred Pollack

How does a decent player bridge player elevate his play to the status of expert? It’s not easy and takes time. Bridge is a game that takes years to master. You can’t become an expert in a couple of years. It simply can’t be done. Playing with a better partner and against better opponents is absolutely the only way to improve. I was very lucky to be mentored by some world-class players and learned more from that experience than from reading any book or taking any class. I strongly believe that you can’t learn bridge the easy way. Up and coming players need a stern lecture more than an ego boost. Let’s admit that not every bridge player can become an expert. All great players have a natural talent and feel for the game that can’t be taught. Either you have it or you don’t. The Cincinnati Bridge Association has many talented newer players. Will they become experts? To do so, they will need to realize how much they have to learn. In two articles for the Alert, I will give a guideline of the knowledge of the bridge expert and the work needed to get to that level. And work it is!

Defense: You should know clearly what situation requires an attitude, count or suit-preference signal. Giving count on defense on declarer’s lead is one thing that almost all experts agree is absolutely necessary. The book Dynamic Defense by Lawrence is an excellent book to improve your logic on defense. Kantar has written some incredible quiz books on defense. Read them. You should also be familiar with surrounding plays and mandatory falsecards.

AQ2

H1093

Declarer leads a low card to the Queen; it’s mandatory to play the 9 or 10. This gives declarer a guess with J87xx. Playing low gives declarer no guess as he is forced to bang down the Ace. Do you know this? For an expert this play is as easy as pie.

Knowing when to cover is a basic skill that you must know perfectly. A76

Q54

Declarer leads the Jack. Playing the Queen in this situation is a novice play. Of course, you should duck because covering accomplishes nothing and ducking saves a trick if declarer has the 10 as he is expected to have. You must duck in tempo! A hesitation gives your Queen away. You should really be thinking ahead of time in what situation you would cover. And you thought bridge was not work? Declarer play: You should know all basic techniques of declarer play like crossruffing, ruffing losers, dummy reversal, establishing a suit, endplays etc. Watson’s book on declarer play was written in 1934, but it is still the “Bible” and is really a complete analysis of declarer play. You need to know all basic card combinations.

Kx A109xx

The correct way to play for 4 tricks is to play the King and lead to the Ace. The play is correct since the combination of Jx and Qx offside is more likely than QJxx onside. Do you know this? You also need to know basic odds. For example, you must know that the likelihood of a 3-3 break (36%) is less than the likelihood of a finesse working (50%). Bridge Master is a great computer program to test your declarer play skills. Can you tackle the problems of the 4th level? 5th level? I don’t think so. Of course, you need to be familiar with squeezes like double squeezes, Vienna coup, criss-cross squeezes etc. Read squeeze books by Love and Kelsey when you find the energy. Believe me, tournaments are not won on squeezes! Still, this reading opens up your mind to new ideas and makes you a much more thoughtful declarer.

(Next ALERT: Discussions on bidding, judgment, ethics and intangibles.)

Middletown’s Bridge Matriarch dies at 100 Years of Age

Vandora, “Van” Woodruff, who managed the Middletown Duplicate Bridge Club for over 50 years, died on August 20, 2002. She remained an active and fierce competitor at the bridge table through age 99, but her friends also fondly remember her sense of humor. Once, at age 97, as she arrived at a local club game, she told her partner she had forgotten her glasses. “But it doesn’t matter,” she said, “because I only wear them for looks.“

WHO’S THE BOSS?by

Ron Babcock

When you and your partner are bidding a hand together: Who sets the final contract? Who decides whether or not a game contract is probable -- or a slam? Who decides to stop at the cheapest part score? Who owns the baton, the scepter of leadership?

Is it you? Is it the better player in the partnership? The opening bidder? The one with the best hand. Actually none of the above is true…or should be true. At first there may be no one with the stick in his hand – sort of like an anarchy – until something happens that thrusts the mantle of leadership on one of them. What happens? One of the partners makes a “limit bid” and at that moment his partner becomes the boss.

What do we mean by a “limit bid”? It is any bid that describes the strength of a hand within a fairly narrow, or limited, range: a range of not more than one trick or about three points. That’s easy, isn’t it?

Opening 1NT is a limit bid (15-17), or 2NT (20-21), or 3NT (25-26): all natural NT’s are limit bids. Rebidding 1NT (after opening) is a limit bid (12-14), or 2NT (18-19) ; or 2NT after 2C (22-24). As opener, rebidding your suit at the first opportunity is a limit bid (13-15), and so is jump rebidding it (16-18). As opener, raising partner’s suit is a limit bid (13-15), and so is jump raising it (16-18). As responder, a simple rebid of your suit is limited to a minimum range (7-9). Responder’s jump rebidding or jump raising are normally limited to the (10-12) range. Any weak two bid or other preempt is limited (nominally 8-10, 3 trick overbid, with equal vulnerability).

All of the above are limit bids and the bidder’s partner has the baton. He knows the total resources of the partnership within a narrow range and makes a decision for the partnership if he can. The important thing here is that each partner knows and agrees who is in control and doesn’t try to wrest it back from his partner unless partner hands it to him.

In a suit or NT contract, he can pass or raise to game as appropriate, or make a limit bid of his own (e.g. 2NT) if he is not sure.

Or he can ask partner further questions about his length or strength with a forcing (new suit) bid. After NT bids, we all have the Stayman and Jacoby bids to set the suit (or NT), but it is still the baton-holder’s

responsibility to be sure the proper level (part-score, game or slam) is reached.

We’ve talked about limit bids, but what about unlimited bids that are always totally forcing. Bids like Strong 2C (22-??). New suit by unpassed responder (7-??). Jump shift by opener (19-??).

These all request partner to make an appropriate limit bid, if possible, so that he can take proper control.

Finally there are the semi-limited, semi-forcing bids such as Opening one of a suit (12-21), not yet limited. Responding one of a suit (7-??), forcing by unpassed hand, not yet limited. New suit rebid (non reverse) by opener (12-18), not forcing if partner is weak (7-9), but requesting a “limit”

rebid in one of the suits or NT. Reverse rebid by opener (16-21).

Once again, the course of the auction will depend upon who makes the first limit bid, and upon how good a boss his partner is.

Note to players at the Bridge Center...

In October each year, the ACBL allows each club to hold a special game in which extra points are offered for free. Look for these games to be held throughout the month. I am holding as many special games as I can for the remaining months of the year, because the CBA has several local players trying to win masterpoint awards. I am doing my part to try to help them. You can help as well by coming out to play in these special games. The bigger the game, the more points available to everyone! -- Jodie Kieffer
