BOOK TALK ACTIVITY

Book Talk Activity was conducted in the Library on 27th February 2018 organised by Scholastic. Students of classes 5th,6th and 8th participated in this activity. The participants were given a book sent by Scholastic Publishers. The child had to read the book and give a brief talk on its contents. Each student narrated confidently the story briefly read by them. The other students who were the audience listened to them attentively, as the participants spoke with actions, expressions and voice modulation At the end of the session the Librarian Archana Pednekar thanked the students of class 5 A for their co-operation in being a part of the Book Talk Programme. She thanked each and every participant for their co-operation and devoting their valuable time to make the Book Talk Programme a success. She also thanked Asst. SPECIAL ASSEMBLY ON INTERNATIONAL DAY OF SOCIAL JUSTICE

The theme for this year for International Day of Social Justice is “Workers on the move: the quest for social justice”. speaking about the importance of the day. Later Ms.Suhani Vernekar recited a poem on “Basic Rights”. This was followed by the students of class 8C & 8B, who enacted a skit which was taken from their Political Science text book. The assembly concluded with a song “We’ve All Got Rights”. The assembly was special too, as Ojaswi Phaldessai of class 8B was felicitated by Mrs Nandini Ramdhani (Managing Director) of Educharya.com an organization which held KPNS (Kalpana Chawla National Scholarship) this year. Ojaswi answered this online exam and qualified. She was offered a boarding pass to go to NASA. She will be going to USA in the month of May. Co-ordinator

PRIMARY ANNUAL ATHLETIC MEET 2017-18

On Friday, February 23, 2018, Our school Vidya Vikas Academy hosted the 20th Primary Annual Athletic Meet for Classes 1 to 5 on the Raia ground at 2.30 p.m. A great interest was observed among the students and the parents. All the spectators came in a large number to enjoy the sports programme. It was a day filled with fervour and excitement. The Chief Guest for the day was the Legendary Footballer and Arjuna Awardee Mr. Brahmanand Sankhwalkar. Board Member and Chairman of the Sports Council of Vidya Vikas Mandal Mr. Vikram Verlekar was also present.

The day started off by welcoming the Chief Guest & unfurling of the school flag. An impressive and a well synchronized classwise march past was conducted. This was followed by spectacular drill displays put up by the students of Classes 1 – 5. The displays made way for the highly awaited athletic events where competitiveness among the students soared through the roof. Many splendid and colourful displays like the fan drill and hoop drill and energizing exercise enthralled the audience. Drills like yoga and mass drill set the tone for the rest of the event.

Once the races began the air was filled with cheering and tons of encouragement for the young athletes. Students of Classes 1 – 5 competed class wise events like 100m run, sack race, budding army, etc. Fun time with class games added a thrill to the enjoyment. The day ended with the Chief Guest congratulating the winners. Our Principal Mrs. Joble Bijoy delivered the vote of thanks, she thanked all the teachers for their cooperation and support and advised the children to keep up their sportsman spirit. The students departed with a clear smile on their faces. The Annual Athletic Meet was coordinated by Sir Omana Kuttan G., Tr. Balika Phaldessai, Sir Sidharth Faldessai, and Tr. Sonia Naik.

CREATIVE CORE : GREETING CARDS ACTIVITY

The main objective of this activity was to enhance the artistic skills in students and help them to express their own thoughts and feelings. The topic given was “Merry Christmas and Happy New Year”. Based on the topic the students designed beautiful cards using their creativity and imagination.The students wrote a message related to the topic inside the card. SCIENCE FIESTA AT SCIENCE CENTRE – 2018

Goa Science Centre with the support of Department of Science, Technology & Environment, Govt. of Goa had organized a Science Fiesta from 26th to 28th February’ 2018. The objective of this festival was to bring about excitement among common people towards Science. This effort helped to impress upon young minds, that they can also contribute significantly to the nation.

Apart from the exhibition, various other programs such as “Meet the Scientist”, Exciting demonstrations, Workshop, Competitions and Quizzes were held.The display of Dry Ice show was appreciated by the students. Several students of Vidya Vikas Academy of classes 6-9 participated in this festival. Students participated in various competitions like Astronomy Quiz, Nuclear Quiz, Science Quiz, Face Painting, Fancy Dress and Elocution. They also attended workshop on Building Water Rocket, Mobile App Making, Paper Quelling, Windmill Making and Vibrobots. The three days fiesta was enjoyed by all, who attended the same.

LIVE SESSION FOR STUDENTS ON NATIONAL SCIENCE DAY

On the occasion of National Science Day, Atal Innovation Mission organized a facebook live session on 28th Feb 2018. The resource person was Prof. Vijay Bhatkar, Chancellor of Nalanda Vidyapeeth. The students of our school got an opportunity to interact with him through this live session. Prof. Vijay Bhatkar discussed the importance of implementing innovative ideas by providing students with practical knowledge in their years at school. Prof. Vijay Bhatkar narrated the life story of his school years where he implemented his ideas and put them into practise, he said that was the best way to learn any concept. He gave an example on how to understand electromagnetic field through understanding the behaviour of magnets. The students felt inspired and keen to learn science experiments by doing mini projects. PRE-PRIMARY HOLI CELEBRATION

Holi is the festival of colours and one of the most awaited festival in India and is celebrated with great joy and vigour. The festival bridges the gap between people of different communities and age groups. People hug each other while smearing each other’s face with colour. The students of the pre-primary section of Vidya Vikas Academy celebrated the festival of Holi on the 1st of March 2018 with great joy. The story behind holi was narrated and enacted by the students of Sr. Kg. A & C and the significance of the festival was discussed. A special dance was also performed and a holi song was sung by the entire section. The highlights of the programme were the water splashes with ‘pichkaris’ and children also threw pieces of coloured paper making a hue of colours.

GOA CBSE SCHOOLS SAHODAYA FUTSAL TOURNAMENT

The Goa CBSE schools Sahodaya “Futsal ” tournament under the aegis of “Futsal” association of Goa was organised by Kings School , Nessai Margao Goa. VVA STUDENT BAGS 3rd PLACE AT ART COMPETITION

Students of Vidya Vikas Academy participated in an art competition organized by Goa State Urban Development Agency. This competition was held on the 9th of March 2018 at Lohia Maidan Margao. Adrienne D’Costa, Raissa D’Souza, Shivani Parodkar and Mahi Vujji of class 6 participated. The theme of the contest was ‘NitollNivolMadgaum’. Through their artworks the students depicted various locations of Margao- railway station, municipality building, VVA school campus,Margao Civil court and visually suggested measures to keep these areas clean and green. Adrienne D’Costa of class 6B won the 3rd prize. She was awarded a certificate and a cash prize of Rs. 800/-. Congratulations to all the participants. Co ordinator

U-13 FOOTBALL TOURNAMENT

Taleem’s Educational Society`s , Posh English High School organised U-13 Boys Football tournament on Saturday 10th March 2018 at Rosary Football ground at Navelim . It was a league -cum- knock out match. In the finals we played against St. Rock High School , Velim and won the match by 4-2 scores. SCHOLASTIC BOOK FAIR/EXHIBITION

A Scholastic Book Fair/Exhibition was held on the 9th and 10TH March at VVA. Students browsed through the books on 9th March as per the browsing schedule for class 1 to 9. The Inauguration of the Scholastic Book Exhibition was on 10th March. Principal Mrs Joble Bijoy inaugurated the exhibition. Other Staff members present were Vice-Principal Mrs Tania Monteiro, Librarian Archana Pednekar,teachers and students.

Principal Joble Bijoy briefly explained the importance of books and told the students that everyday a child should devote time to read a book as books help us to strengthen our knowledge. At the exhibition a wide range of various topics and for different age level books were displayed. Fiction, Novels, Subjectwise, Reference, etc.

The Students were interested in the fiction books as well as the other books on display. The Fair/Exhibition went on smoothly till 1.30pm.

AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL CHEMISTRY QUIZ

Association of Chemistry Teachers – Goa, had conducted the Australian National Chemistry Quiz for classes 8 to 10 which was held in the month of August.Vidya Vikas Academy gave an opportunity for the students to participate in the same. In all 16 students had participated for the same. Nischal Parulekar of class 9C and Ojaswi Phaldessai of class 8B have been awarded with plaques for their stellar performance in the Australian National Quiz. They have been awarded with a medal, a certificate and cash prize of Rs. 300/-each.

SERIES OF SESSIONS

In the month of January and February 2018, to provide an all round development of our students, following sessions were conducted : Class 10 ABC – Self Control ( Importance of saying ‘NO’ ) : This was in preparation for the challenges that the students may encounter after passing out school. To equip them to face the temptations and difficulties with courage. Class 9 ABC – Communication Skills : Good Communication Skills is the key to success. Importance of communication in every aspect of life and the benefits of mastering such a skill was explained. Class 12 AB – Stress Management :Class 12 Boards is always a stressful life experience. This session was conducted to help them cope with stress and enhance their performance. Class 8 ABC – Types and Effects of Bullying : This is to make them aware of the consequences of teasing and troubling their classmates. Class 5 ABC – Effects of Bullying : To be proactive and stand up for ones rights. Students should learn to identify the bullying behaviour at once & bring to the notice of the teachers. These sessions were conducted as per the availability of students and their schedule. All the sessions were conducted by the Health and Wellness Tr. Wilma Francis Alphonso.

BENEFITS OF FOREST AND TREES – ACTIVITY OF THE MONTH (Classes 6 to 9)

Trees are the building blocks of our urban forests, the living, breathing, life sustaining part of our human habitat or built environment. When trees are properly planted and cared for, they promote human health and save energy. To inculcate the values of safe guarding our environment, a poster/ drawing competition was held at Vidya Vikas Academy for the classes 6 and 7. MY WORLD OF DREAMS – ACTIVITY OF THE MONTH (Classes 1 to 5)

This activity was held in their respective classrooms during the activity periods.The topic for class I, 2 and 3 was “My Fantasy Land” and for the 4th and 5th standard was “World In 2050″.This activity exploded in every piece of art. The participants were every enthusiastic & eager to present their work. The best five students were selected from each class and were given certificates. Objectives of the monthly Activity * Every child is an artist.The children showcased their creative skills in drawing and colouring and came up with amazing work. * It gave a platform to display their vivid ideas and think beyond imagination. INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’s DAY CELEBRATED

International Women’s Day is celebrated globally on 8th March every year to honour and appreciate women’s achievements and role from the political to social fields and calling for gender equality in all the aspects of life. The day also commemorates the inspiring role of women around the world to secure women’s rights and build more equitable societies. So also it remembers the voices of many women that go unheard and who continue to be dominated from securing their rights and realizing their full potential. A special assembly was conducted by the Senior Secondary students of Class XII to express love and gratitude towards women’s contribution in our lives and society at large. The assembly began with an informative and influential article on the significance of ‘Women’s Day’ followed by recitation of poems dedicated to women and their roles in our families. An inspiring video based on life of women was shown to the students which illuminated their minds. The video expressed the rejection that a girl goes through in her family from the time of her birth and how she overcomes them to excel in life.

VVA STUDENTS ATTEND SEMINAR ON INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY

On the occasion of Women’s Day, G.R. Kare College of Law organised a one- day state level seminar on ‘Transforming Women’s Lives: Issues, Concerns and Challenges on 8th March 2018 with the aim of spreading awareness about the issues faced by the women and the legal protection that they can claim for the violation of their rights. The session began with an inaugural ceremony followed by the lighting of the traditional lamp. Mrs. Sheela H. N. Gaunekar- the President of Vidya Vikas Mandal was the Chief Guest for the programme. The first session was conducted by Mrs Poonam Bharne who read a paper on legal aspects of rights of women under the criminal through which she briefed the audience about the various enactments of laws formulated by the Indian Parliament for the protection of women in our country.

The second session was based on the role of NGO’s in contribution towards social upliftment of women by Ms

Joan Rebello who enlightened the audience about the marvellous work undertaken by some prominent NGO’s in

Goa. The last session comprised of the legal protection to women in Indian scenario by the resource person Ms

Maria Goretti Simoes. She elucidated on the significance of the Portuguese Civil Code/ Uniform Civil Code

applicable in Goa and the rights that are bestowed on women under its protection. It is a legacy that was left

behind by the Portuguese as a gift to the Goans.

Overall it was an enlightening and an informative experience.

The seminar was attended by Shrisha Gaunkar, Christel George of class 12 and Tr. Jeniffer Fernandes.

WORLD POETRY DAY AND INTERNATIONAL DAY OF FORESTS

“Poetry awakens our senses and brings immense pleasure through the stirring of our emotions” World Poetry Day is observed annually on 21st March with the purpose of promoting reading, writing, publishing and teaching of poetry throughout the world. This day is also celebrated as the International Day of Forests to raise awareness about the importance of all types of forests. To commemorate both the days a special assembly was conducted by the students of class 12 B. The assembly commenced with a brief note on the significance of both the days followed by a short quiz on famous poets and their celebrated works in the field of poetry. To celebrate nature a poem was recited entitled ‘I Wondered Lonely as a Cloud’. A video was also screened enlightening the students about the importance of having cleaner, greener and environment friendly cities. The students were updated with some facts about poetry. The assembly was concluded with a thought provoking quote by Mahatma Gandhi on the protection of forests.

WORLD WATER DAY

The global water crisis is one of the many issues that call for action. The challenges include water scarcity, water pollution, inadequate water supply and the lack of sanitation for billions of people in lesser developed countries.

To sensitize the students about these issues that the world is facing today a special assembly was conducted on 22nd March 2018 to observe the World Water Day. Students of class 12 participated in this assembly. The theme for this year was “Nature for Water- exploring nature based solutions to water challenges”. The students were briefed about the significance of the day followed by a video which exposed students to the reality of few places on earth, where clean consumable water is not available. The second video highlighted the safety measures that can be undertaken not to run deficit of clean fresh water. The assembly ended by spreading the informing among the students about the cities currently facing fresh water scarcity.

SWACHH VIDYALAYA PURASKAR 2017 Vidya Vikas Academy participated & has scored an excellent rating in the ‘Swachh Vidyalaya Puraskar-2017’, instituted by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India to recognize, inspire and celebrate excellence in sanitation and hygiene practice in Schools. The purpose of the award is to honour schools that have undertaken significant steps towards fulfilling the mandate of the ‘Swachh Vidyalaya Campaign’. The performance of the schools was evaluated under the following categories: 1. Water. 2. Toilet. 3. Handwashing with Soap. 4. Operations and Maintenance. 5. Behaviour Change and Capacity Building. VVA outshined with an overall score of 90% & has been accorded 5 star ratings.

SCIENCE TALENT SEARCH EXAMINATION

The State Council Education Research and Training (SCERT), Goa, organised a Science Talent Search

Examination for the Higher Secondary schools all over the state which was held on 14th January, 2018. Top 25

students are awarded a Scholarship of Rs 2500/- to each of the students of Std XI and XII. Students of Vidya Vikas

Academy ,Senior Secondary Section appeared for this Examination and Sarvagnya Jatti (Ranked 18th) and

Surabhi Aswath (Ranked 19th) from class XII A have cleared this examination.
