The 2014 State of Minnesota legislative session is starting this month and our Government Affairs Committee, led by Eric West, AIA, and Meredith Hayes Gordon, AIA, has established our legislative agenda that includes doing all that AIA Minnesota can to keep our profession, and our state, strong and vital. Part of the agenda, which our Board approved in January, includes AIA Minnesota joining the Move MN coalition. Move MN (movemn.org) was established after the 2013 legislative session when it was recognized by a wide spectrum of organizations – from labor to Chambers of Commerce to Transit for Livable Communities – that in order for Minnesota to be competitive, all of our transportation systems need improvement. We expect one million more residents in Minnesota by 2040 with 350,000 more jobs. That requires our state to continue to invest in infrastructure beyond buildings and that is what Move MN will help to do. And, of course, we will be supporting the bonding bill and making sure the state is investing in our public buildings. We will continue to partner with other professional associations to make our state a great place to live and work.

And, of course, we will be

supporting the bonding bill and making sure the state is investing in our public buildings. We will continue to partner with other professional associations to make our state a great place to live and work.

On another note, our website redesign is underway and we need all firms to shamelessly promote themselves. We need the best in your project photos to put up on the website so that the public sees what we are good at doing – making the world a more beautiful and better place. Contact Mary Larkin at [email protected] for instructions on how to upload photos.

And finally, I look forward to seeing you next weekend in Duluth at the Lake Superior Design Retreat on February 21 & 22 and getting inspired together. Stay warm.

“I recently had the good fortune of attending an AIA Forum Presentation entitled, “Perspectives on Ethical Leadership”, presented by Debra Magnuson. I found this seminar to be among the best, if not the best, one I have attended.

I would highly recommend this seminar and hope that the AIA will offer additional seminars on ethics.”

Testimonial for AIA Minnesota’s ARE Reviews Erin Anderson, AIA, an Architect / Project Manager with Cuningham Group Architecture in Minneapolis:

“At the outset of studying for the ARE, I found my ambitions hindered by:

· the magnitude of test content;

· uncertainty over which resources to invest time and money in;

· indecision regarding study methods and test sequence;

· intimidation related to specific subjects (especially structures).

“I found that the ARE 101 and ARE Review Sessions offered by AIA Minnesota helped address these concerns and restore my confidence and motivation to test. The sessions served as a useful supplement to my individual study efforts:

· connecting me to a valuable network of instructors and other test takers;

· providing practical and discerning advice regarding the studying and test-taking process;

· offering general and specific instruction related to both the multiple choice and vignette portions of the exam.”

The awesome conclusion to Erin’s experience is that she not only became licensed, but is now teaching some of our sessions, “in hopes that I can pass along some of the advice and information I gained through the ARE process, to the current candidates.”

First Words by Joyce Sutphen

First Words

Joyce Sutphen’s new collection flows like a memoir in poems, filled with shining detail from her childhood on a family farm (an ode to the oat binder!) through her years of young motherhood and beyond. The poems are warm and generous, playful and inventive, personal and transcendent. Some poems, such as “The Before I Was Born Blues” combine a conversational tone with the formality of a sonnet. Others offer pure lyricism, as in her descriptions of the farm: the evening sky “a glow/ of opu-lence through the soldiering corn,” and “peonies heavy/ as fruit, drooping their deep heads/ on the dog house roof.” Central to the book are poems for and about family. From such elemental subjects comes the most enduring art. — Connie Wanek

“I am now lost from the life that I lived,” Joyce Sutphen says in her new book First Words. But the book is a chronicle of finding. Incidents and details of a way of farm life remote or vanished for most of us are brought close for examination. But this is not a gathering of nostalgic reminiscences—it is an investigation which does not explain things, instead reliving them, enhanced by new perceptions. She listens to her memory and argues with it. In plain but vivid language charged with subtle metaphor she presents a world in which people, animals, weather, and machines are alive with relationship and pregnant with mature feeling. — John Calvin Rezmerski

Open Position ADVISORY COMMITTEE FOR THE CAPITOL AREA ARCHITECTURAL AND PLANNING BOARD

After 15 years Rosemary McMonigal, AIA, will step down as the AIA Minnesota representative to the CAAPB Advisory Committee.

We are seeking candidates for consideration to that position. There are three Advisors who are selected by AIA Minnesota, the State Arts Board, and the CAAPB itself. The tenure of each Advisor is two 4-year terms, with the possibility of a 3rd term.

The role of the Advisory Committee is to advise the CAAPB and its staff on all planning and design matters within its jurisdiction. Charged by the legislature to protect and enhance the dignity and beauty of the Capitol building and the surrounding area, the CAAPB has two roles: 1) planning for the Capitol Area, and 2) design review of proposed projects. A stipend for attending meetings is provided. For additional information please visit the CAAPB website at http://mn.gov/caapb/index.html

We owe a tremendous debt of gratitude to Rosemary for the service she has provided. The following projects are among the many that were addressed during her time with CAAPB – Capitol Mall Memorials for Hubert H. Humphrey, Woman Suffrage, WWII, Firefighters and others; multiple parking ramp buildings; new legislative office building; redevelopment of historic St. Paul block to the Penfield apartments; realignment of LRT; policy for commemorative works in the Minnesota State Capitol; and many more.
