Video Clip 1: Big Night
Big Night is an American film that came out in 1996. Watch the opening
scene of this video with the sound off and discuss everything you can guess
from the visual cues alone; specifically,
What is it about?
Who are the characters?
Where are they?
What is happening? What do you think that they are saying?

Video Clip 1: Big Night
Use this discussion to generate a written dialogue of what you
think is happening/being discussed. It should be no more than
one page and take 1-3 minutes to perform.
Then play the scene with the sound on; what elements did you
get right? What new things did you learn? Were there any words
or cultural information that was unfamiliar?

"Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" and Bullying
While holiday shopping, I saw many items featuring my favorite Christmas character,Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer. Amid the nostalgia I was feeling for good old Rudolph, I was reminded of a conference I
attended at the beginning of the calendar year. One of the speakers mentioned using popular art and media
to teach classroom lessons. The speaker mentioned thatRudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeercould be used toteach lessons about bullying.http://www.schcounselor.com/2010/12/rudolph-red-nosed-reindeer-and-bullying.html

Halloween &The Great Pumpkin!
Whats so great about it?
It contains a dated, yet idealized and nostalgic representation ofwhat Halloween could have been like (but probably wasnt)
It comments on other popular holidays and the culturalreferences they contain
It presents a creative depiction of childhood and imagination
It combines many aspects of childhood holidays into onefictional holiday, thus setting itself apart from other holiday-
oriented kids movies
All of these aspects makes it very approachable and enjoyablefor ESL learners, from children to adults

Before Sunrise
Before Sunrise is the fourteen-hour adventure of two people who step off their train to
continue their conversation. Jesse (Ethan Hawke), an American student who has recently
had his heart broken, meets Celine (Julie Delpy), a French graduate student who has had a
string of bad luck in the love department. He asks her to spend his last night in Europe with
him roaming the streets of Vienna before his flight back to America the next morning
With sharp wit, the two have insightful conversations about the future, but admit that
they will most likely never see each other again.
In the last seconds before Celine must depart on her train to Paris, they decide to meet each
other in Vienna in exactly six months. The film concludes with the two travellers headed
back to their homes with hopeful smiles spread across their faces.

Before Sunsetpicks up nine years after Jesse and Celine's one night stand. Jesse is
married with a child and has just written a best-selling book about a one-night romance in
Europe. At a book signing in Paris, he spies Celine out of the corner of his eye.
As the two explain their new lives to each other, the effect their one night has had on
them is profoundly different. Jesse, formerly a love-less cynic, is now an optimistic
romantic as that night has changed him forever.
Celine, who at first seems a bit cold to Jesse, eventually admits how heartbroken she has
been for nine years without him, never letting another man get close too her.
The last words of the film are Celine turning to Jesse and saying, 'Baby, you're gonna
miss that plane.' Simply and honestly, he replies, 'I know.'
