Introduction2

WARNINGTo prevent fire or shock hazard, do not exposethe unit to rain or moisture.To avoid electrical shock, do not open thecabinet. Refer servicing to qualified personnelonly.

Mains lead must only be changed at a qualifiedservice shop.

Precautions

Safety• This unit operates on 110 – 240 V AC, 50/60

Hz. Check that the unit’s operating voltageis identical with your local power supply.

• If anything falls into the cabinet, unplug theunit and have it checked by qualifiedpersonnel before operating it any further.

• The unit is not disconnected from the mainsas long as it is connected to the mains, evenif the unit itself has been turned off.

• Unplug the unit from the mains if you donot intend to use it for an extended period oftime. To disconnect the lead, pull it out bythe plug, never by the lead.

Installing• Allow adequate air circulation to prevent

internal heat buildup.• Do not place the unit on surfaces (rugs,

blankets, etc.) or near materials (curtains,draperies) that may block the ventilationslots.

• Do not install the unit near heat sourcessuch as radiators or air ducts, or in a placesubject to direct sunlight, excessive dust,mechanical vibration or shock.

• Do not install the unit in an inclinedposition. It is designed to be operated in ahorizontal position only.

• Keep the unit and cassettes away fromequipment with strong magnets, such asmicrowave ovens or large loudspeakers.

• Do not place heavy objects on the unit.• If the unit is brought directly from a cold to

a warm location, moisture may condenseinside the VCR and cause damage to thevideo head and tape. When you first installthe unit, or when you move it from a cold toa warm location, wait for about three hoursbefore operating the unit.

CautionTelevision programmes, films, video tapes andother materials may be copyrighted.Unauthorized recording of such material maybe contrary to the provisions of the copyrightlaws. Also, use of this recorder with cabletelevision transmission may requireauthorization from the cable televisiontransmitter and/or programme owner.

Compatible colour systemsThis VCR is designed to record and play backusing the PAL (B/G, D/K, and I), MESECAM(B/G and D/K), or NTSC (M) colour systems.Recording of video sources based on othercolour systems cannot be guaranteed.

About colour systemsDifferent countries use different coloursystems and TV systems. These systemshandle such things as video playback andrecording differently. Using your VCR in acountry that is on a colour system notsupported by this VCR may cause problemssuch as playback without sound, a verticallyrolling picture, etc.This VCR is compatible with most of theexisting colour systems (NTSC, PAL, andMESECAM) and TV systems (B/G, D/K, I,and M) except for those used in France, Brazil,Argentina, and Uruguay.

Setting up the remote commander

Inserting the batteriesInsert two R6 (size AA) batteriesby matching the + and – on thebatteries to the diagram inside thebattery compartment.

Insert the negative (–) end first,then push in and down until thepositive (+) end clicks intoposition.

Using the remote commanderYou can use this remotecommander to operate thisVCR and a Sony TV. Buttonson the remote commandermarked with a dot (•) can beused to operate your Sony TV.If the TV does not have the gsymbol near the remote sensor,this remote commander willnot operate the TV.

Controlling other TVs with the remote commanderThe remote commander is preprogrammed to control non-Sony TVs. If yourTV is listed in the table below, set the appropriate manufacturer ’s codenumber.

1 Set TV / VIDEO at the top of the remote commander to TV .2 Hold down I/u, and enter your TV’s code number(s) using the

programme number buttons. Then release I/u.Now you can use the following TV control buttons to control your TV:I/u, TV/VIDEO, programme number buttons, ? (ten’s digit), PROG+/–, VOL +/–, and WIDE with some TV.

Tip• If you set your TV’s code number correctly while the TV is turned on, the TV turns

off automatically.

Notes• The TV/VIDEO button selects the input source of the TV from aerial in or line in.

The button does not control this VCR.• With normal use, the batteries should last about three to six months.• If you do not use the remote commander for an extended period of time, remove

the batteries to avoid possible damage from battery leakage.• Do not use a new battery with an old one together.• Do not use different types of batteries together.• Some buttons may not work with certain Sony TVs.

Code numbers of controllable TVsIf more than one code number is listed, try entering them one at a time untilyou find the one that works with your TV.

To make wide mode settings, see the footnotes below this table for theapplicable code numbers.

*1 Press WIDE to switch the wide picture mode on or off.*2 Press WIDE, then press VOL +/– to select the wide picture mode you want.*3 Press WIDE. The menu appears on the TV screen. Then, press

CURSOR >/./?// to select the wide picture you want and press OK.

Notes• If the TV uses a different remote control system from the one programmed to work

with the VCR, you cannot control your TV with the remote commander.• You may not be able to use some buttons to control non-Sony TVs due to the remote

commander’s signal limitations.• If you enter a new code number, the code number previously entered will be erased.• When you replace the batteries of the remote commander, the code number

automatically resets to 01 (Sony). Reset the appropriate code number.

1 Disconnect the aerial cable from your TVand connect it to AERIAL IN on the rearpanel of the VCR.

2 Connect AERIAL OUT of the VCR andthe aerial input of your TV using thesupplied aerial cable.

3 Connect the mains lead to the mains.

Connecting the VCR

Connect the aerial to the VCR and your TV as shown below to watch TVprogrammes and VCR pictures on your TV. In addition, if your TV hasaudio/video (A/V) input jacks, we recommend you connect the VCR toyour TV using an audio/video cable to get a better picture and sound.

To a TV that has audio/video input jacks

This additional connection improvespicture and sound quality. Connect theTV as shown on the right.

If you want to use the Trinitron TVSynchro Play function (see page 42), thisconnection is necessary. (If your TV hastwo or more inputs, connect the audio/video cable to the VIDEO IN 1 jacks.)

To a stereo systemYou can improve sound quality byconnecting a stereo system as shown onthe right.

To a satellite tunerYou can record programmes from otherequipment such as a satellite tuner.

To record satellite programmes using theG-CODE system, connect the audio/video cable to the LINE-1 IN jacks (notto the LINE-3 IN jacks )(see “To recordsatellite broadcasts” on page 52).

Note• If a video signal is input to the VCR (via the line input, tuner, or playback), the on-

screen menus will appear on your TV regardless of the NTSC PB switch setting.

Setting the NTSC PB switchto match your TV systemYou have to set the NTSC PB switch onthe rear of the VCR according to yourTV system to display the on-screenmenus when there is no video signalinput, and play back a tape recorded inthe NTSC 3.58 system properly.

1 Press I/u ON/STANDBY to turn on the VCR.

2 Press RF CH on the VCR lightly.

The factory-preset RF channel appears in the display window (51for SLV-ED100ML and ED100MI, 32 for SLV-ED100ME).

The VCR signal is output through this channel to the TV.

3 Turn on your TV and select a programme position for the VCRpicture.

This programme position will now be referred to as the videochannel.

Some TV has the programme position, such as 0, that is reserved fora VCR. In this case, select that programme position for the VCRpicture. Refer to the instruction manual of your TV for details.

Tuning your TV to the VCR

If you have connected the VCR to your TV using the audio/video cable, skipthis step.

4 Press RF CH.

The TV system appears in the display window (G for SLV-ED100MLand ED100ME, I for SLV-ED100MI).

5 Press PROGRAM +/– to select the appropriate TV system.

6 Tune the TV to the same channel as thatshown in the display window so thatthe picture on the right appears clearlyon the TV screen.

Refer to your TV manual for tuninginstructions.

If you select the wrong TV system in step 5, the picture may notappear. Select the appropriate TV system and tune the TV again.

If the picture does not appear clearly, see “To obtain a clear picturefrom the VCR” below.

7 Press RF CH.

You have now tuned your TV to the VCR. Whenever you want toplay a tape, set the TV to the video channel.

To obtain a clear picture from the VCRIf the picture does not appear clearly in step 6 above, go to step 7 to finishthis procedure once. Then start again from step 2. After pressing RF CH instep 2, press PROGRAM +/– while the RF channel is displayed, so thatanother RF channel appears. Then tune the TV to the new RF channel until aclear picture appears.

To set another RF channel number on the VCR, select a channel number thatdoes not receive a broadcast signal in your area and is clear of interferencefrom other channels.

If you cannot obtain a clear picture after performing this procedure, werecommend you connect the VCR and TV using the audio/video cable (see“To a TV that has audio/video input jacks” on page 9). If the same symptompersists, consult your nearest Sony service facility.

Note• If you set the wrong TV system, you may have no sound or the sound may be

distorted (noisy sound).

Presetting channels

First, we recommend that you preset the receivable channels in your areausing the One Touch Tuning function. If the One Touch Tuning functioncould not preset the channels correctly, you can preset them automaticallyusing the menu. Then, if some channels could not be preset automatically,set them manually; if there are any unwanted channels among the presetones, you can disable the channels.

If you live in the area where various TV systems coexist, and have channelsthat don’t match the TV system you selected in automatic presetting, resetthe TV system for those channels (see “Resetting the TV system” on page20). If the channels don’t match the TV system, the sound may be distortedor noisy, or the colour TV programme may become black and white, etc.

Presetting all receivablechannels using the OneTouch Tuning function

Step 6

Press ONE TOUCH TUNING on the VCR for more than threeseconds.

The VCR starts channel presetting, and “NOW TUNING, PLEASEWAIT” appears in the display window. When presetting all of thereceivable channels is complete, the message disappears.

To check if the channels are preset correctlySet the TV to the video channel and press PROGRAM +/– on the VCR. Ifthe TV screen changes to a different programme each time you pressPROGRAM +/–, the channels are preset correctly.

If the sound is distorted or noisy, the TV system may not be set correctly.Select the correct TV system and preset channels using the TUNER PRESETmenu on the next page.

Tip• To stop the One Touch Tuning function, press ONE TOUCH TUNING or p STOP

on the VCR during the setting.

Note• If you operate another feature while presetting channels, the setting may be

Disabling unwanted programme positionsAfter presetting channels, you can disable unused programme positions. Thedisabled positions will be skipped later when you press the PROG +/–buttons.

1 In step 5 above, press programme number button “0” twice to displaythe number “0” beside CHANNEL SET.

2 Press OK.

Resetting the TV system (only for areas wherevarious TV systems coexist)If the sound is distorted or noisy, or the colour TV programme becomesblack and white, etc., that channel may not be matched to the proper TVsystem. In this case, try the following steps.

1 Press PROG +/– or programme number buttons to select theprogramme position that has the channel with above describedconditions.

2 Press MENU, then select TUNER PRESET and press OK.

3 Select SYSTEM and select the TV system on which you can obtain thebest sound and picture.

4 Repeat steps 2 and 3 for other positions you want to preset the TVsystem to.

5 Press OK.

If the picture is not clearNormally, the Auto Fine Tuning (AFT) function automatically tunes inchannels clearly. If, however, the picture is not clear, you may also use themanual tuning function.

1 Press PROG +/– or the programme number buttons to select theprogramme number for which you cannot obtain a clear picture.

2 Press MENU, then select TUNER PRESET and press OK.

3 Select FINE TUNING.

The fine tuning meter appears.

4 Press CURSOR ?// to get a clearer picture, then press OK.

Note that the AFT (Auto Fine Tuning) setting switches to OFF.

The G-CODE system is a feature in SonyVCRs that simplifies programming theVCR to make timer recordings. Setting up the G-CODE system for satellitebroadcastsWhen your satellite tuner is connected via the AERIAL IN connector, firstyou have to set the programme position for each satellite channel using theTUNER PRESET menu. Then set the guide channel number for each satellitechannel using the SET UP CH AND G-CODE menu.

If your satellite tuner is connected via the LINE-1 IN jacks, you don’t have toset programme positions nor guide channel numbers for satellite channels.Skip the following operations.

1 Turn on the satellite tuner.

2 Press MENU, then select TUNER PRESET and press OK.

3 Press PROG +/– to select a programme position you want to use forwatching a satellite channel.

4 Select CHANNEL SET, then press CURSOR/ to tune the VCR to the satellite tuner.

The channel number displayed besideCHANNEL SET is used for receiving allsatellite broadcasts from the satellite tuner.

5 Press PROG +/– to select another programme position for anothersatellite channel, and press the programme number buttons to enter thesame channel number as the one displayed in step 4.

Repeat this step for all satellite channels.

6 Set the guide channel number for each programme position assigned tothe satellite channel, following the procedures on page 30.

Notes• The G-CODE system used in this VCR is for Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong,

Macao, etc. and cannot be used in areas such as U.S.A, Canada, Japan, Korea,Taiwan, and U.K.

• If the preset channel is on cable TV, ”C” appears on the left of the channel in step 1(“Setting up the G-CODE system”) in most areas. However, this won’t be appliedin some areas (see pages 22 to 29 for reference).

• The menu disappears automatically if you don’t proceed for more than a fewminutes.

To use the time counterAt the point on the tape that you want to find later, press CLEAR. Thecounter in the display window resets to “0:00:00.” Search for the pointafterwards by referring to the counter.

To display the counter on the TV screen, press DISPLAY.

Notes• When you play back a tape recorded in the PAL or MESECAM colour system,

streaks may appear even if the colour system setting is set to AUTO. If so, select thecolour system, PAL or MESECAM in the PAL/MESECAM option of the SET UPMENU (see page 71 for details).

• The counter resets to “0:00:00” whenever a tape is reinserted.• The counter stops counting when it comes to a portion with no recording.• If a tape has portions recorded in both PAL and NTSC systems, the time counter

reading will not be correct. This is due to the difference between the counting cyclesof the two colour systems.

• Depending on your TV, the following may occur while playing an NTSC-recordedtape:– the picture becomes black and white,– the picture shakes,– no picture appears on the TV screen,– black streaks appear horizontally on the TV screen,– the colour density increases or decreases.

• Tapes recorded on other VCRs in the LP mode of NTSC system can be played backon this VCR, but the picture quality cannot be guaranteed.

Turning on the VCR and TV, and starting playbackautomatically (Trinitron TV Synchro Play)You can only use this function if your TV is made by Sony (Trinitron TV).

How to connect to use this function

Connect the VCR and TV with the audio/video cable (see “To a TV that hasaudio/video input jacks” on page 9). Be sure to connect the audio/videocable to the VIDEO IN 1 jacks on the TV if the TV has two inputs or more.The TV must be placed where it will respond to the remote commanderwhile you are pointing it at the VCR.

Operation

Make sure that the TV’s power is in standby mode.

Press TRINITRON TV SYNCHRO PLAY and hold the remote commander inplace for about two seconds.

The VCR and TV turn on, and the TV is set to the video channel. If there is atape in the VCR, playback starts automatically.

Notes• If the Trinitron TV Synchro Play function does not work properly:

– Wait a few moments, and press the button again.– Replace both of the batteries with new ones, and press the button again.

Note that this function may not operate some Sony TVs because of the remotecommander’s signal limitations.

• Do not press TRINITRON TV SYNCHRO PLAY while playing back a video tape. Ifyou do so, the TV’s input source will momentarily switch to the TV’s tuner.

Tips• To select a programme position, you can use the programme number buttons on the

remote commander. For two-digit numbers, press the ? (ten’s digit) buttonfollowed by the programme number buttons.

• You can select a video source from the LINE-1 IN, LINE-2 IN, or LINE-3 IN (SATIN) jacks using the INPUT SELECT button.

• The display appears on the TV screen indicating information about the tape, but theinformation won’t be recorded on the tape.

• If you don’t want to watch TV while recording, you can turn off the TV.

Notes• The display does not appear during still (pause) mode or slow-motion playback.• If a tape has portions recorded in both PAL and NTSC systems, the time counter

reading will not be correct. This discrepancy is due to the difference between thecounting cycles of the two colour systems.

• The remaining tape indicator bar may differ in length between the PAL and NTSCsystems.

• When you insert a non-standard commercially available tape, the remaining timemay not be correct.

To set the timer using the remote commander

You can also use the remote commander to set the Easy Timer.

1 Press EASY TIMER .

2 Set the recording start and stop times and programme position.

To set each item, press PROG +/– or the programme number buttons,then press EASY TIMER to go to the next setting.

For example, to set the recording start or stop time to “3:30” using theprogramme number buttons, press 0, 3, 3, and 0 in sequence.

Holding down PROG +/– changes the time in increments of 15minutes.

To stop recording

To stop the VCR while recording, press p STOP.

To check or change the timer setting

Press EASY TIMER repeatedly until the setting you want to check or changeflashes. Then re-enter the new setting, if necessary. If you do not want tochange any of the settings, press EASY TIMER repeatedly until the TIMERREC indicator on the VCR lights up.

You can also change the timer setting using the TIMER SET/CHECK menu.For details, see page 63.

If ‘’CLOCK –:– –” appears when you press EASY TIMERSet the clock by referring to “Step 9: Setting the clock” (page 37).Alternatively, you can set the clock by following the steps below. As thismethod automatically sets the date to factory setting (1/1/1999), you cannotmake the correct timer settings using the menu. It is suitable only for thelimited use of recording a programme starting within the next 24 hoursusing the EASY TIMER knob.

To use the VCR after setting the timerTo use the VCR before a timer recording begins, just press I/u. The TIMERREC indicator turns off and the VCR switches on. Remember to press I/u

to reset the VCR after using the VCR.

You can also do the following tasks while the VCR is recording:

• Reset the counter.• Display tape information on the TV screen.• Check the timer settings.• Watch another TV programme.

Tips• The programme is recorded in the current tape speed mode. To change the tape

speed, press SP/LP (SP/EP) before you complete the setting in step 6.• If you make a mistake when entering the time with the programme number

buttons, complete the operation entering the four digits, then re-enter the time.Then press EASY TIMER to confirm the setting.

• To cancel the Easy Timer setting, press CLEAR on the remote commander or pressPROGRAM + and – on the VCR at the same time during any of the Easy Timersettings.

Notes• You cannot set the recording programme using the Easy Timer function if eight

programmes have already been set using the G-CODE system or the TIMER SET/CHECK menu.

• You can set the timer for only one programme using the Easy Timer function. If youwant to set the timer for another programme, use the G-CODE system or the TIMERSET/CHECK menu. For details, see pages 50 and 53.

To record satellite broadcasts

If you connect the satellite tuner and the VCR, you can record satelliteprogrammes.

1 Turn on the satellite tuner.

2 On the satellite tuner, select the satellite programme for which youwant to make a timer setting.

3 Follow the steps on pages 50 and 51.

4 Keep the satellite tuner turned on until the VCR finishes recording thesatellite programme for which you have made a timer setting.

Tips• To cancel the procedure, press G-CODE before pressing OK.• To record NTSC signals, set the tape speed to SP or EP. To set the EP mode, display

Using the click shuttle ringWith the click shuttle ring, you can operate a variety of playback options.There are two ways for using the click shuttle ring, normal mode and jogmode.

To use the click shuttle ring in normal mode

During playback or pause, turn the click shuttle ring clockwise oranticlockwise. Each change in the click shuttle ring position changes theplayback mode, and the corresponding mark appears on the TV screen for afew seconds in the following way if the on-screen display function is on.

To use the click shuttle ring in jog mode

Use this mode for frame-by-frame playback.

Press JOG to enter the jog mode. The JOG button lights up. If you change tojog mode during any playback mode, the playback pauses so you can see astill picture. Each change in the click shuttle ring position shifts the pictureone frame. To shift frames in reverse, turn the click shuttle ringanticlockwise. The frame shift speed depends on the speed you turn theclick shuttle ring.

To resume normal mode, press JOG again. The JOG button lights off.

Synchronised recording

You can set the VCR to automatically record programmes from suchequipment as a satellite tuner or cable TV decoder by connecting theequipment to the LINE-1 IN jacks and setting its timer. The connectedequipment must have a timer function for this feature to work.

When the connected equipment turns on, the VCR also automatically turnson and starts recording a programme from the LINE-1 IN jacks.

Notes• Some TVs or other equipment with timer functions will automatically turn off if no

operation is performed within a certain amount of time. In this case, theSynchronised recording also stops automatically.

• When the connected equipment turns on while the SYNCHRO REC button is lit,recording starts automatically.

• Some equipment keeps transmitting signals even though the power is off. In thiscase, the Synchronised recording feature does not work because the VCR will not beable to know when to start recording. To record the programme, set the timer onthe VCR. If you use a satellite tuner or a cable TV decoder, make sure to turn it on.For details, see “Setting the timer manually.”

In ZWEITON (German stereo) systemThis VCR automatically receives and records stereo and bilingualprogrammes based on the ZWEITON system. When a stereo or bilingualprogramme is received, the STEREO indicator appears in the displaywindow.

To select bilingual sound while recording

Press AUDIO MONITOR to select the sound you want.

In NICAM systemThis VCR receives and records stereo and bilingual programmes based onthe NICAM system (the NICAM indicator appears). When a stereo orbilingual programme is received, the STEREO indicator appears in thedisplay window.

How sound is recorded on a video tapeThe VCR records sound onto two separate tracks. Hi-fi audio is recordedonto the main track along with the picture. Monaural sound is recordedonto the normal audio track along the edge of the tape.

Notes• To listen to playback sounds in stereo, you must use the AUDIO OUT connections.• When you play a tape recorded in monaural, the sound is heard in monaural

regardless of the AUDIO MONITOR setting.• If the AUDIO MONITOR button does not function, check that AUDIO MIX in the

The VCR marks the tape with an indexsignal at the point wher e each r ecordingbegins. Use these signals as r efer encesto find a specific r ecording. The VCRcan sear ch up to 99 index signals aheadof or behind the cur rent position.

Adjusting the trackingAlthough the VCR automatically adjusts the tracking when playing a tape(the indicator flashes in the display window , then goes of f), distor tionmay occur if the tape was r ecorded in poor condition. In this case, manuallyadjust the tracking.

APC playbackThe APC function automatically works on all types of tapes, including r entaltapes and tapes that wer e not r ecorded with APC.

APC r ecording

Whenever you inser t a tape and star t recording for the first time, the VCRadjusts to the tape using the APC function (the APC indicator flashesrapidly). This adjustment is r etained until the tape is ejected.

To deactivate the APC

Set APC to OFF in the SET UP MENU. The APC indicator in the displaywindow goes of f.

How to connect to a stereo systemConnect the LINE-2 IN AUDIO L/R jacks on this VCR to the audio outputjacks on the stereo system, using the RK-C510HG audio cable (not supplied).

Tips• If the other VCR is a monaural type and connected to this VCR’s LINE-2 IN jacks,

connect the audio plug to the AUDIO L (white) jack. The sound is recorded on bothright and left channels. If you connect to the AUDIO R (red) jack, the sound isrecorded only on the right channel.

• You can also use the LINE-1 IN or LINE-3 IN (SAT IN) jacks instead. If the otherVCR is a monaural type, the sound is recorded only on the channel whose jack isconnected to the audio plug. To record on both right and left channels, connect theaudio plugs to the AUDIO R/L jacks using the VMC-910HG audio/video cable (notsupplied).

Notes• Make sure you connect the plugs to jacks of the same colour.• If you connected this VCR to both the LINE IN and LINE OUT jacks of the other

Audio dubbing

This feature lets you record over thenormal audio track. The monauralsound previously recorded is replacedwhile the original hi-fi sound remainsunchanged. Use this feature to addcommentary to a tape that you haverecorded with a camcorder.

Before you start dubbing• Turn on your TV and set it to the

video channel.• Press INPUT SELECT or PROG +/–

to display “LINE 2” (“LINE 1” or“LINE 3”) in the display window.

1 Insert a source tape into the stereo system (or the playback VCR).Search for the point to start playback and set it to playback pause.

2 Insert a prerecorded tape with its safety tab in place into this(recording) VCR. Search for the end of the section to be replaced andpress P PAUSE.

3 Press CLEAR to reset the counter to “0:00:00.”

4 Rewind the prerecorded tape to the beginning of the section to bereplaced.

The VCR enters pause mode.

5 Press AUDIO DUB.

The AUDIO DUB indicator on the VCR lights up.

6 To start editing, press the P PAUSE buttons on this VCR and the stereosystem (or other VCR) at the same time.

When the counter reaches “0:00:00,” audio dubbing stops automatically.

Press AUDIO MONITOR until the “L,” “R,” and “STEREO” indicators go offin the display window.

• Connect the mains lead to mains securely.

• Moisture condensation occurs. Turn the power off,unplug the mains lead and leave the VCR to dry forover three hours.

• The clock stops if the VCR is disconnected from themains for more than eight hours (24 hours for SLV-ED100ME). Reset the clock (and timer).

• Make sure the TV is set to the video channel. If youare using a monitor, set it to video input.

• If you made connections using the aerial cable only,make sure the RF channel number is set correctly foryour area.

• Set PAL/MESECAM in the SET UP MENU accordingto your local colour system.

• Adjust the tracking with the TRACKING +/– buttons.• Make sure the colour system is correctly set to the

system that the tape was recorded in.• If you made connections using the aerial cable only,

make sure the TV system is set correctly for your area.

• The video heads are dirty (see the last page ofTroubleshooting). Clean the video heads using theSony T-25CLD, E-25CLDR, or T-25CLW video headcleaning cassette. If these cleaning cassettes are notavailable in your area, have the heads cleaned at yournearest Sony service facility (a standard service chargewill be required). Do not use a commercially availableliquid type cleaning cassette other than Sony’s, as itmay damage the video heads.

• If a message appears, this indicates that the HeadCondition Sensor has detected dirty video heads.Follow the on-screen message. For details about theHead Condition Sensor, see page 80.

• The video heads may have to be replaced. Consultyour local Sony service facility for more information.

• Select the correct source with the INPUT SELECT orPROG +/– buttons. Select a programme positionwhen recording TV programmes; select “LINE 1,”“LINE 2,” or “LINE 3” when recording from otherequipment.

• Adjust the TV aerial.• Make sure SYSTEM (BG, DK, I, or M) in the TUNER

PRESET menu is set to the system of your area.

• Set PAL/MESECAM in the SET UP MENU accordingto your local colour system.

• The safety tab has been removed. To record on thistape, cover the tab hole.

• Check that the safety tab has not been removed.

• Make sure the tape is not at its end.

• The recording condition of the tape is very poorand tracking cannot be adjusted.

• Set your TV’s code number. The code number maychange when you replace the batteries of theremote commander.

• Clean the cabinet, panel and controls with a dry,soft cloth, or a soft cloth slightly moistened with amild detergent solution. Do not use any type ofsolvent, such as alcohol or benzine.

• Press I/u ON/STANDBY or p STOP on the VCRto stop the demonstration for a salesperson.

Sapphire tape cleanerThe VCR incorporates a sapphire tape cleaner which cleans a video tape when it is loaded.This cleaner can prevent the video heads from contamination by removing dust or moldfrom the tape with the sapphire edge.

Head Condition SensorThe Head Condition Sensor detects dirty video heads. When the heads are dirty, amessage will instruct you to insert a video head cleaning cassette.The VCR may temporarily switch to a different head and resume playback. To switch theheads, press · PLAY while the “PUSH [PLAY] TO RESUME TEMPORARILY” messageappears on the screen. Although playback will resume, the sound will be monaural. Whenplayback is finished, be sure to clean the heads with a video head cleaning cassette.Be sure to the Sony T-25CLD, T-25CLW, or E-25CLDR head cleaning cassette. If thesecleaning cassettes are not available in your area, have the heads cleaned at your nearestSony service facility (a standard service charge will be required).
