SYNOPSIS

2031. Une nouvelle ère glaciaire. Les derniers survivants ont pris place à bord du Snowpiercer, un train gigantesque condamné à tourner autour de la Terre sans jamais s’arrêter. BANDE DESSINE: LE TRANSPERCENEIGE

Transperceneige, en anglais Snowpiercer, est basé sur la bande dessinée ‘Le Trans-perceneige’ de Jacques Lob, Benjamin Legrand et Jean-Marc Rochette - qui ont d'ail-leurs collaboré au storyboard du film et ont soigné l'artwork. Hero Complex caught up with Rochette about his thoughts on the En-glish translation of “Le Transperceneige,” the movie version of “Snow-piercer” and the political and philosophical questions raised in the story.

Hero Complex: “Le Transperceneige” first came out in 1982. What are your feelings about its English release more than 30 years later?

Jean-Marc Rochette: I’m very proud of course, because very few French comic books are translated into English. And I want to say here that my artistic co-mic book influences are mostly American. I am a great ad-mirer of American artists such as [Fre-derick] Opper, [Rudolph] Dirks, [Elzie Crisler] Segar, Noel Sickles, [Will] El-der, Frank Robbins, [Richard] Corben, [Robert] Crumb and especially the great Alex Toth.

HC: Did you make any changes for the English edition?

JMR: Not the slightest change. The book is the same it was 32 years ago, with all its charm and all its weaknesses. I was so young back then, that when I read the comic book today I can feel like that beginner again, and I like that. It’s like traveling in time to my younger days.

HC: The comic is considered among the best sci-fi graphic novels. Did you have any idea at the time it would endure and be so respected?

JMR: I had no idea, really. I was only 25 years old, and it was my first sci-fi graphic novel, but I knew that Jacques Lob’s story was a very inspired philosophical fable. I remember that when “Transperceneige” was first published, the critics were very laudatory, for example in 1983 the newspaper Le Monde said it was ”the best graphic novel of the se-cond millennium.” Hmmm, I don’t know… But as we say in French, “aux innocents les mains pleines” (fortune favors the innocent)!

HC: You helped create such a compelling world — a post-apocalyptic wasteland where humans survive only on a train with deep class divi-sions and disparities. Were you trying to make a political statement at the time

JMR: This is very strange, because neither Jacques Lob nor me were ve-ry political, even though politics al-ways was and is a national passion in France. But for us not really, I think we were more concerned with ecology at the time; I was an activist against nuclear power plants and Lob was also very concerned with pollution and animal protection, but I don’t remember any discussions between us about social inequality. Neverthe-less this story is probably the most political graphic novel that I have ever read, and of course created.

HC: Why do you think the story is still relevant to a contemporary au-dience?

JMR: Now the inequality between the rich and the poor has never been greater, and it exists everywhere around the world… I think that perhaps this is the main reason why “Snowpiercer” really speaks to people in Ko-rea, France and, I hope, soon in the USA.

HC: What’s it like to know that a film is being based on your work?

JMR: In this case, it was like winning the lottery — a kind of miracle — because the graphic novel was almost forgotten, and it so old (over 30 years old), and suddenly there is this Korean film director who found it by chance in a small bookstore in Seoul, on the other side of the world. But then, as we say in French, “In art, bad luck is a professional foul.” We were very lucky this time.

SUR JOON-HO BONG

Joon-Ho Bong – Réal isateur Joon-Ho Bong (né à Daegu le 14 septembre 1969) est un réalisateur et scénariste sud-coréen. Adolescent déjà, il rêvait de faire carrière dans le cinéma, sans doute influencé par la fibre artistique bien présente dans son entourage familial. Il a toutefois étudié la sociologie, mais devint membre du ciné-club de Yonsei University. C’est cela qui l'incita par la suite à obtenir son diplôme de l'Académie Coréenne d'Arts cinématographiques. Bong est surtout connu comme un réalisateur féru de film de genre, dont il n'hésite pas à repousser les limites. Il traite magistralement son matériel visuel et Transperceneige, son premier film en anglais, lui permet d'ouvrir un nouveau chapitre, très prometteur, d'une carrière qui semble désormais suivre une voie express.

SUR CHRIS EVANS

Chris Evans - CURTIS Chris Evans s'est déjà illustré comme le héros de "Captain America" et "Marvel's The Avengers". Dans Transperceneige, le rôle de Curtis lui permet d’assumer une fois de plus le rôle de leader intrépide. Curtis prend la tête du groupe de résistants qui se rebellent contre l'élite. Ils réagissent à la violence par la violence et aux lois qui ont été établies pour permettre à certains de régner sur le train. Evans, à propos de la collaboration avec Joon-Ho Bong : "Snowpiercer était une expérience fantastique. J'ai eu l'opportunité de travailler avec de grands acteurs et un grand réalisateur. Car Bong est tout simplement phénoménal. À mes yeux, sa méthode de travail est unique. En général, quand on tourne un film, on commence par un close-up, puis on tourne une scène reflétant le point de vue d'un personnage, puis un nouveau close-up, puis une autre perspective de personnage. Mais Bong, lui, exploite une méthode complètement différente. Il est tellement plus mi-nutieux. En fait, tout le film semble comme préassemblé dans son esprit. Un peu comme s'il construisait une maison. Là où un réalisateur lambda demanderait des planches et des clous, lui en connaît déjà la taille et le nombre précis. Il garde toujours deux longueurs d’avance et l'on saisit immédiatement qu'il travaille à un tout autre ni-veau. On m’avait averti qu'il était très sûr de son travail, et je peux le confirmer. Il a ma totale confiance."

SUR JOHN HURT

John Hurt – GILLIAM Gilliam incarne comme nul autre la sagesse et le courage. Pour les occupants des voi-tures de queue, il est presque un saint, qu'ils suivent de façon inconditionnelle. Afin de transmettre cette aura et cette sagesse du personnage, il fallait un acteur plus âgé, très expérimenté. Joon-Ho Bong vit découvrit John Hurt il y a une trentaine d'années, dans 'Elephant Man'. Depuis, il était impatient de connaître qui se cachait derrière ce masque. John Hurt lui est apparu comme l’acteur tout indiqué pour ce rôle. John Hurt à propos de la collaboration avec Joon-Ho Bong : "Joon-Ho Bong est… un peintre. Pour lui, chaque nouveau projet naît d'une toile blanche. Il ne se laisse jamais influencer par ses réalisations antérieures. Tout comme "Memories of Murder", "Mother" est un film génial, mais ils sont fondamentalement dif-férents. Sur le plateau, sa méthode est impressionnante. Le principal défi pour Bong venait justement des contraintes du décor : un convoi ferroviaire. Il travaille comme Hit-chcock : pleinement conscient des tirages, il est parcimonieux avec la pellicule. Très peu aboutit d'ailleurs, jusqu'à la salle de montage. Cela exige beaucoup de connais-sances cinématographiques et d'expérience. Je serais personnellement très heureux de collaborer pour un autre de ses films."

SUR TILDA SWINTON

Ti lda Swinton – MASON Swinton était déjà une grande admiratrice de Bong Joon-ho lorsqu'elle l'a rencontré pour la première fois à Cannes, alors qu'il siégeait parmi le jury pour la Palme d'Or. Il ne leur fallut guère de temps pour nouer cette collaboration et créer le personnage de Ma-son. Telle une femme qui aime les défis, elle a assimilé une véritable métamorphose. Perruque, nez postiche, dents artificielles : Tilda Swinton en devient méconnaissable. Le public est surpris de cette multiplicité. Tilda Swinton à propos de sa collaboration avec Joon-ho Bong: "J'ai toujours trouvé génial le travail de Bong Joon-ho. Je suis depuis longtemps une adepte de ses films. Intégrer le casting était pour moi un honneur, car j'ai pu travailler avec plusieurs de mes acteurs préférés. Et surtout, j'étais particulièrement heureuse de collaborer avec Song Kang -ho, car il est à mes yeux le meilleur acteur encore en vie. Étant donné l'énorme concurrence pour chaque rôle, y incarner le mien était un privi-lège. Pour moi, ce film est une métaphore de la vie, voire de la survie, d'un jour à l'autre, d'un compartiment à l'autre, d'une lutte à l'autre. Les gens avancent ou sont abandonnés, mais jamais ne perdent de vue leur objectif."

FREE SNOWPIERCER

Le refus de la Weinstein Company de diffuser Transperceneige, puis de vouloir le raccourcir de 20 minutes, a fait grand bruit. Chris Evans et Denise Heard-Bashur s'y sont opposés et ont lancé la campagne 'Free Snowpiercer'. Celle-ci a connu un large écho et a contribué à permettre la diffusion du film aux États-Unis. En tirage limité certes, mais néanmoins dans sa version intégrale.

Le 6 février dernier, Indiewire a relaté à ce sujet:

They say a good compromise is one where no one leaves the table happy, and that probably best describes the truce reached between The Weinstein Company and director Joon-Ho Bong. After months of rumor, anger and speculation that saw the filmmaker's fans, key cast members and the director himself lay public their displeasure about Harvey Weinstein's rumored plans to cut "Snowpiercer" by twenty minutes and add voiceover, the good news is that the director's cut of the film will get a U.S. release. The bad news? It might not play at a theater near you.

Deadline reports that the movie will go into limited release only, as they claim a wide release was planned until Joon-Ho Bong "turned in a cut of just beyond two and one-half hours." But as people who have been obsessively following the film know, the director's cut that is already in release in some territories (and is screening at the Berlin Film Festival) is actually just a shade over two hours long. It's unclear if they're mistaken but the site also suggests that the movie "doesn’t deliver what the [sales] agents promised" despite the fact that it has broken box office records in South Korea, and taken home a handful of awards. Hmm....

One has to wonder how much the limited release plan has to do with Harvey Weinstein's very public declarations of late that he will be more considerate when it comes to violent movies, and will draw down on releasing them. Be-cause it's not like this doesn't have the star power to justify a broader rollout, with Captain America himself, Chris Evans, in the lead, and Octavia Spen-cer, Jamie Bell, John Hurt, Tilda Swinton, Alison Pill and more in support. But as our review of the movie notes, the action in this film kicks off from the start and barely pauses for a breath. With Harvey ever increasingly aware of his public persona, taking this to 2000 theaters after being very criti-cal of gun violence might come off badly.

Whatever the real reasons, the bottom line is "Snowpiercer" will arrive as intended. We'll see how far the rollout goes, but if it plays in the next town over, take the drive to see it.
