Talking Breeding - Victoria
TWO FOR JOE
THIS week’s review of litters selected from the
Victorian Litter Registrations list, for the week ending
17 January, starts with the little known, but proven sire,
Didda Joe (May 2010 Vapour Whirl x Debbie Saquan),
whose dam is by Lilli Pilli Lad x Riverdale Jodie
(Prince Of Tigers x Weber).
He is from a litter of four named, all winners and
his 80 starts resulted in 17 wins and 19 placings.
He won over 400 metres at Geelong (22.93), 480
metres (27.28) and 570 metres (32,55) at Horsham, 595
metres at Sandown (34.33), 600 metres at The
Meadows (34.56), 545 metres at Ballarat (31.22), 660
metres at Bendigo (38.15) and 520 metres at
Cranbourne (30.55).
He has only one litter on file with nine named
offspring, five dogs and four bitches, whelped in April
2015 which produced seven individual winners.
LETHBRIDGE breeder, Daniel Welsh has the first of
the two litters, which has two dogs and six bitches,
from the well bred bitch, Hurricane Queen (December
2013 Hurricane Luke x Black Queen), whose dam is by
Pure Octane x Hero Girl (Hotline Nero x Tanner
Queen).
She is from a litter of four named, with three

Two Banjo Boy litters
THIS week’s review of litters selected from the NSW
Whelping Report for the week ending 9 November,
starts with two litters by Banjo Boy (April 2011 Vee
Man Vane x Off Springer).
Stratheded breeder, Toni Northfield has the first
of the two litters, which has four dogs and two bitches,
from the well bred bitch, Kingsbrae Nelly (March 2013
Bralyn County x Kingsbrae Sally), whose dam is by Bit
Chili x Kingsbrae Di (Solve The Puzzle x Pretty
Jacalyn).
She is from a litter of 12 named, which produced
ten winners who won 131 races between them,
including, Porky Teller, 33 wins, Mincin’ Machine, 30
wins, Western Dave, 16 wins, It’s His Job, 11 wins and
Bralyn Jackson, 10 wins.
She raced 51 times for nine wins and eight
placings, winning four times over 520 metres at
Lismore (30.01) and three times over 520 metres at
Albion Park (30.17), with single wins over 411 metres
at Casino (23.50) and 520 metres at Tweed Heads
(29.59).
She has four named offspring from her first litter,
whelped in April 2016, by Don’t Knocka Him, who are
not two years old yet, and also has a litter of six dogs
and two bitches on file, whelped in February 2017, by
Peter Rocket, so she certainly has some well bred pups
on the ground.
WERRINGTON DOWNS breeder, Edward Foyle has
the other Banjo Boy litter, and must be delighted with
the nine dogs and one bitch pup, from the well bred
bitch, Rema’s Topaz (January 2011 Goodesy x
Guantanamo Dot), whose dam is by Eiffella x Rema’s
Puzzle (Solve The Puzzle x Princess Rema).
She is from a litter of five named, with four
winners, including her nine wins and 17 placings from
57 starts.
Four of those wins were over 515 metres at The
Gardens (29.78), two wins over 537 metres at
Traralgon (31.00) and she also won over 520 metres at
Wentworth Park (30.18), 530 metres at Potts Park
(29.99) and 520 metres at Bathurst (30.16).
Her career as a brood bitch has got off to a good
start with all five named in her first litter winning,
Diane’s Gift, Minnie Wizard, Rema’s Amber, Rema’s
Prince and Sketchy Jack, who were whelped in
November 2014, by Barcia Bale.
Two Barcia Bale Litters TWO litters on the list this week by leading national
sire, Barcia Bale (March 2010 Go Wild Teddy x
Princess Bale).
Benjamin Miller, from Orange, has the first of the
two litters, which has four dogs and five bitches, from
the beautifully bred, lightly raced bitch, Midnight Maid
(September 2011 Where’s Pedro x Midnight Movie),
whose dam is by Spiral Nikita* x Midnight Drama (Go
Wild Teddy x Ready To Rise).
She is from a handy litter of nine named, which
produced eight winners, including Midnight Rumour,
10 wins, and Midnight Scandal, 8 wins.
Her records shows she was lightly raced with just
12 starts, which resulted in three wins and five
placings, with wins over 450 metres at Ballarat (25.62),
480 metres at Horsham (27.44) and 407 metres at
Grafton (23.20).
She has two named offspring on file from her
first litter, Cyril Figgis, who was placed in a Bathurst
trial recently, and Game Of Bones who impressed
winning a Bathurst trial on 18 January, so keep an eye
out for them both when they face the starter again.

at Sale (24.84).
People often email me asking for
recommendations on breeding and for over 40 years
now I have had a specific policy on not giving advice.
Many years ago I was accused, on a greyhound
chat site, of favouring a particular sire, in return for
payment.
The matter was settled out of court, and it has
never happened again, to my knowledge anyway.
If people want to know what I think, they only
have to read the reviews and I say that now, because if
I was looking to buy a bitch with potential future
breeding in mind, one from this litter who come to
mind, with her dam line boasting Magic Sprite, Big
Daddy Cool and Token Prince and her city race record.
Hay Fergus litter RAYMOND TERRACE breeder, Lesley Green has a
nice litter of eleven pups on the list this week by the
beautifully bred, under-rated stud prospect, Hay Fergus
(March 2013 Brett Lee x Daydream), whose dam is by
Bit Chili (Bombastic Shiraz x Chili Berger) from Stresa
(Bobniak x Always Royal).
The four dogs and seven bitches in this litter are
from the well bred, versatile performer and proven
producer, Shoe Laces Lady (July 2011 Cool Effort x
Thing Ona String), whose dam is by Yo Yo’s Boy x
Zane’s Girl (Head Honcho x Malawi Blue).
She is from a litter of six named, with five
winners and her contribution was 58 starts, for 14 wins
and 18 placings, with wins from 420 metres at 720
metres.
She won eight races at Lismore, six over 635
metres (37.74), where she also won over 520 metres
(30.87) and 420 metres (24.55), twice over 610 metres
at Grafton (35.30), with single wins over 715 metres at
The Gardens (41.79), 720 metres at Wentworth Park
(43.06) and 600 metres at Albion Park (35.33) where
she also won over 710 metres (43.06).
She has winners on file from her first litter.

Two Fabio Litters
TWO litters on the list this week by the emerging stud
success, My Bro Fabio (March 2012 Turanza Bale x
Flamenco), whose dam is by Where’s Pedro x Zarbo
(Bright Ebony x Gold Serenade).
My Bro Fabio raced 52 times, for 26 wins and 14
placings and $478,585 in stakes.
He won the Group 1 Temlee, Group 1 Perth Cup,
Group 1 Hume Cup and Group 3 Canberra Cup.
His first crop to race have produced some
exciting prospects, including Paradiso Lass (x Key To
Eden), Rockstar Stratus (x Midnight Quest), Sheez My
Chicki (x Miss Chicki), Dreaming Time (x Black
Affair), Bankennie Chic (x Zippy Chicki),
Mandelbaum (x Zipping Amity), Tritt Tritt (x Lainey
Bale), Kulu Cooper (x Kulu Flame), Rockstar Kobe (x
Midnight Quest) and Sherbini (x Hidden Assets), with
more winners coming in all states every week.
This week’s Metropolitan winners summary, on
page 4, shows he had five winners around the country
last week.
WYEE breeder, Chrystal Hensing, has the first
of his two litters this week, which has four dogs and
four bitches, from the well bred, lightly raced, proven
producer, Kellmarg (September 2011 Hurricane Luke
x Marglissa), whose dam is by Bombastic Shiraz x
Awesome Berger (Awesome Assassin x Chili Berger).
She is from a litter of eight named, with four of
the six who raced, winning.
Her record shows she only raced 18 times, for
three wins and six placings, winning twice over 457
metres at Goulburn (25.88) and also over 365 metres at
Nowra (21.19).
She has seven named offspring on file from her
first litter, whelped in June 2014, by Magic Sprite,
who have all won raced.
WAGGA WAGGA breeder, David Jones, has the
second My Bro Fabio litter, which has six dogs and
one bitch, from the beautifully bred bitch, Paua To
Admit (January 2013 Fabregas x Paua To Terrify),
whose dam is by Spiral Nikita* x Paua To Burn
(Awesome Assassin x Alice Dooley).
She is from a litter of eight named with the five
who raced, all winning.
Her contribution, from just 23 starts, was three
wins and six placings, with wins over 525 metres at
Wagga (30.70), 460 metres at Warragul (26.27) and
520 metres at Ipswich.
Certainly plenty to like about the pedigree of
both of these litters and it’s a good feeling when you
have a young litter, to see the sire you chose producing
winners.

GCA GREYHOUND OF THE MONTH AWARD JANUARY 2018
“OUT OF RANGE”
- 25 -
GCA News
The GCA Greyhound of the Month for January
2018 has been awarded to star young Victorian
sprinter Out Of range for his outstanding win in
the Group 1 Silver Chief Classic at the Meadows
on 5 January.
After a 30.17sec heat victory, Out Of Range ran
second in his semi-final, but started $2.40 favourite in
2018’s first Group 1 event, courtesy of a rails draw
and an imposing six from eight record over The Mead-
ows’ 525m course.
Out Of Range took full advantage of his prized
inside alley to hold the lead in the all-important charge
to the first turn.
While Out Of Range wasn’t able to break clear,
he kept kicking strongly to repel Degani by .79 of a
length in 29.83sec, eclipsing his previous personal best
of 29.90sec at The Meadows, with Fast Car Driving
close up in third.
Out Of Range’s litter brother and kennelmate
Poke The Bear was first reserve for the Silver Chief
and while he missed a shot at the $100,000 winner’s
purse, Poke The Bear set The Meadows alight earlier
in the night when coming from the rear of the field to
clock a scintillating 29.71sec in the free-for-all.
Out Of Range has now won nine of his 14 starts, while
Poke The Bear has won 10 from 16.
“We named Out Of Range after Kelvin Jones, who is
here tonight. Kelvin has been training for us for a lot
of years (in conjunction with Gerry O’Keeffe), and he
has had a bit to do with this dog. His phone is always
out of range,” Darren Puleio laughed.
“I only breed one or two litters a year because I work
full-time running Ram Security, which sponsors the
Cranbourne and Warragul greyhound clubs.

Happy Birthday Today we turn 14 and 12! A big
happy birthday to my two babies, I
love them to pieces and so proud of
them. Birthday breakfast of peanut
butter on toast and hopefully some
pupcakes later after dinner.
(Tara Martin - Moonee Ponds)
Andrea Moss commented on facebook: I'd love to get some advice on whether to go with a Black Dog
balance harness or Black Dog training halter for my grey, Billy
(they're the two options I've narrowed it down to).
The problem: he's about 33kg and I'm not big, and when he
gets excited he's capable of literally pulling me off my feet
with the current setup of GAP collar and regular lead. He gets
most excited by trees and poles - especially during the first half
of the walk, he lunges at them to pee. The other time when this
is an issue is when he sees medium to big dogs, particularly
when they're off lead and racing around the park. I haven't
worked out yet whether he's just excited and wants to join
them or is fearful (I found out that he was bitten by another
dog just before entering GAP, to the extent that one of his teeth
was fractured and had to be pulled and he still has a scar on his
nose). When approached for sniffing, he often pivots on his
lead, jumps around, and sometimes leaps forward toward the
other dog (no growling and only occasional barking). I
obviously need to do more work with him around other dogs
and on the lead, but I'm not going to be able to do that until I
have a better lead/halter/harness setup that gives me a chance
of controlling him more effectively.
Recommendations and tips would be wonderful - thanks.
PS. He's very well behaved and mannered at other times - he
waits for me to tell him to eat before he eats his breakfast and
dinner and to take treats, has learned not to go into the laundry
even when the door is wide open (the kitty litter is in there),
will go on to his bed when told to, responds to "uh uh" when
he's about to do something I don't want him to do, etc. He just
gets so stimulated and excited on walks that it interferes with
his listening and responsiveness.
Maaiki Salter replied:
Have you considered a halti type. You then have control of the
head.
Walking harnesses can quite often be slipped out of, unless
you get one designed for fly ball.

FOSTER A GREYHOUND:
There are many greyhounds who need a little more
assistance to help them settle into pet life
They fall into two categories
Greyhounds who are transitioning from the track
and need help to pass their GAP assessment
OR
Those dogs who have been a marginal fail at their
GAP assessment
These dogs are just gorgeous happy greyhounds, the
only difference is that need a little more help to
transition into pet life
The reality is that without foster carers some of
these dogs are at risk

GAP News Bobby retires from the track
Bobby the greyhound has swapped the racing track for
a life with four children, six horses, a terrier, cats and
dairy cows in Numurkah.
It’s a far cry from the racing track but Bobby is not
fazed by any of it. He gave the cats and horses a sniff,
then walked quietly away.
Kylie and Mark Sutton and their children Brittany,
Braydon, Makaya and Kyran, found Bobby at the
greyhound adoption weekend which was held at GAP’s
headquarters at Seymour.
Bobby was one of 104 greyhounds to find new homes
during GAP’s first-ever weekend-long adoption event.
Bobby has settled very comfortably into his new
home. A bit like Goldilocks, he tried to find the perfect
place to sleep and, after a restless night for everyone
involved, he rejected the couple’s bed, then a beanbag
and a toddler’s bed before he finally settled for the
family couch.
Choosing Bobby was a decision that involved everyone
in the family. They studied the GAP adoption website
for weeks before narrowing down the field to five
dogs but didn’t hesitate when they finally met him at
the GAP facility.
“I can’t get over his gentle nature,” Kylie said. “He is
so laid back and gentle.”
Bobby retired from the racing track 12 months ago. His
trainer Simon Barker, who had Bobby for two years –
first to train him, then as a pet – always thought Bobby
was a special dog with a beautiful nature. Originally
known as Dark Jameson he also had success on the
track, with 13 wins and 27 minor placings in 77 starts.
“It broke my heart to let him go,” he says, “but my 101-
year-old dad has come to live with me again and we’re
worried that he will trip over the dog or the gate will be
left open. It wasn’t safe for dad or the dog.”
It was a difficult decision to make but Simon is happy
that he has gone to a loving home.
Bobby had a moment in the limelight as a radio star
just before the adoption weekend. He went with GAP
representatives to the 3AW studio in Melbourne to
spread the word about the adoption weekend and drew
plenty of pats and attention from the show’s hosts.
Spread out on the couch in Numurkah, he looks ready
for a quiet retirement after the excitement of a busy
week.
GAP Adoptions Manager Larissa Darragh said “the
program is continuing to go from strength to strength
and I look forward to the next adoption day”.
More than 1300 greyhounds were rehomed by GAP last
financial year and GAP aims to better that figure this
year.
People who wish to attend the upcoming
Bendigo adoption day should register their interest
beforehand via the GAP website at:
http://gap.grv.org.au/events/greyhound-adoption-
day/.
If you wish to adopt on the day, please click on
the ‘Adopt A Greyhound’ button on the website and
follow the links to complete an adoption application
form. This will help GAP find the right dog for you

Greyhounds Home Training Tips
Behaviour and Positive training Social skills aren’t just for humans!
One of the most important lessons your puppy or
dog should learn is that they must sit before
interacting with you or any other human.
You can teach a puppy or mature dog to do almost
any trick. Dogs learn at any age, as long as lessons
are repeated often enough and teaching sessions are
short and fun.
Good communication builds good relationships
Just as between people, good relationships between
dogs and their owners are based on good
communication.
Dogs communicate between themselves by means of
body signals. It’s only natural, then, that they’ll use
the same method to communicate with people. Your
responsibility as a pet owner is to learn to interpret
such signals.
Doing so will enable you to teach your puppy or dog
the appropriate way of telling you what he or she
needs or would like, whether it’s food, to be let out,
to play or to receive some loving attention from you!
Reward good behaviour
Parents often don’t remember to praise their children
when they behave well, yet will never forget to tell
them when they do not. We tend to do the same with
our pets. We ignore them when they are quiet and
well behaved and pay them attention only when they
behave inappropriately. It’s always best to do the
reverse and praise and reward a desired behaviour,
and ignore the unwanted.
Ignore bad behaviour
Dogs, just like humans, are social animals and need
interaction with others, so withholding your attention
is a very effective passive punishment. For example,
if your dog jumps up on you, cross your arms, turn
your head away and remain absolutely silent until
they stop jumping. Don’t try to push them away,
look at or talk to them. They’ll interpret any of these
actions on your part as attention, or even play. When
your pet does finally sit, reward them with your
undivided attention and a treat of some kind.
If, in the past, you allowed your puppy or dog to
gain your attention by barking or jumping up on you,
you must realize that if you subsequently decide to
ignore such behaviour, your pet will only try longer
and harder to regain that attention. An analogy in
human terms would be a person who presses the
button of an elevator whose doors do not open. He or
she will press the button repeatedly, before giving up
and walking down the stairs.
Selecting Treats
Choose a very special food treat that your dog loves,
and hold it between the two fingers of a hand.
Place this hand close to the front of your pet’s nose
to let them know it’s time to work for a treat.
Experiment with different treats to find out what's
gets the most attention, avoid treats that are part of
your pets regular diet.
Tone of Voice:
* Decide at an early stage what words your dog
will be responding to.
* All family members should use the same
terminology so there is less chance of
confusing your pet.
* Keep commands short and distinct
* Be Consistent
Reward Regularly
Your dog will be trying really hard to do what your
asking, remember it’s not just the dogs fault if they
don’t understand, keep them engaged by rewarding
their efforts when they get close.
When they succeed in what you’re asking, reward
quickly and give extra praise.
Is your dog paying attention?
Dogs do react to eye contact and you should begin
training them to pay attention to you. Call your
puppy or dog by his or her name. As soon as they
look at you, you should give them a special treat.
Repeating this simple exercise at any time will teach
your pet that it is worthwhile to pay attention to you.
In fact, calling your pet’s name is an effective way
of interrupting, and thus eliminating, unwanted
behaviour. Making an unusual sound is another way
of interrupting. Once your dog is paying attention to
you, you can ask them to come or sit.
Play takes training, too!
Puppies and dogs need to
exercise and play and to have
contact and interaction with both
people and other dogs. They
should be taught to play with toys
only and should learn that human
hands, feet or any other body part
are not toys. If your pet grabs a
hand or foot, either intentionally
or accidentally, such behaviour
should be interrupted either by withholding your
attention (ignoring them) or by making a high-
pitched “ouch” sound. As soon as they let go, offer a
large toy and resume playing.

Raced ten times now for three placings and was
stepping in class and distance when third over 515
metres at Sandown (SAP) on 4 February, beaten 4.01
lengths in the race won by Destini Cavalier (29.90).
That was coming off a 460 metres third at

days.
Looks to be improving with racing and could be
one to watch out for next start.
ZIPPING MONTY

Girl. Owners: Hallinan Syndicate.
Tr: Carolyn Jones (Rosedale).
Beautifully bred youngster who followed first up
win over 515 metres at Sandown (SAP) on 14 January,
with a handy second there on 4 February, beaten 2.16
lengths from box one in the race won by Savannah
Ash (29.69).
His 14 January win was recorded at 30.17
(B29.67), and his actual time last Sunday was 29.82 so
he has improved and will continue to do so.
Very smart prospect in capable hands.
MEPUNGA BELLA
Black bitch, May 2016 Bella Infrared* x Mepunga

Very promising bitch who won her first three
starts, all over 400 metres at Geelong 22.35B, 22.45
(B22.44) and 22.69 (B22.46) before having no luck
from box four when unplaced over 450 metres at
Ballarat on 30 January.
Came from box four again last Sunday at
Sandown, when third, beaten 3.54 lengths in the race
won by Aston Utah (29.79).
Big step from 400 metres at Geelong to 515
metres at Sandown, with a buffering over 450 metres
at Ballarat on the way.
