“We let them be horses. They have a

lot of paddock time and not have pressure applied too early - that’s the

trainer’s job, later on in life when their bones and joints are developed.

“It’s not just physical though but mentally also; letting them mentally

be confident and comfortable in their environment and make sure they’re

settled and happy.

“I think the perception is that you do more with them, to get them

more forward and stronger to embrace the two-year-old racing system.

We take a different approach with the aim of achieving a sound racehorse

going forward.

“If you don’t put that pressure on them at the stage that we have them,

when they get a little bit more mature and a little bit older and broken

in and on to their racing career, every month counts. By the time they’ve

gone through a yearling prep, they’ve only had 14 or 15 months on average

of life.”

Graduates of the academy include Group 1 winners Gytrash (Lope

De Vega), who last week secured a spot in the world’s richest turf race, The

Everest (1200m), and Seabrook (Hinchinbrook), both out of their 2017

Inglis Premier Yearling Sale draft. That was only the third draft they had

prepared for Oaklands’ flagship auction.

“To achieve those two Group 1 winners has meant a real lot,” Anderson

said. “What we really want to do is cement ourselves in the Inglis Premier

Sale as that reliable vendor that purchasers can come to, knowing that

they’re going to get a product that’s got every chance of success. To get

those early Group 1 winners helped to confirm those relationships and

establish what we’re trying to achieve with the Maluka Yearling Academy.”

The Maluka Yearling Academy brand has been born from their success

with just a handful of crops to race, with their graduates also including top

Hong Kong sprinter Full Of Beauty (Darci Brahma), Irwin Stakes (Gr 3,

1100m) winner Hard Empire (Hard Spun), and Group 1 performer Perast

(Snitzel).

“It’s still in its infancy but I just wanted to get that branding out there

that we are doing things differently,” Anderson said. “Going forward this

spring we’re really excited about the different prospects that we’ve got

heading towards the black-type races.

“It’s lovely to see the horses go on because you know that the owner,

who has entrusted their yearling with us to raise and prepare for the sales,

will profit from it through the broodmare.

“There’s nothing better than seeing a client who purchased the

horses, seeing them at the next sales and they come to us really wanting to

buy our product. I think those bonds are going to strengthen even more.

Just with the economic times that we’ve got and the future ahead of us

that’s a bit uncertain, I think it’s those relationships and that confidence

that will stand us in good stead. We sell a product that is going to perform

to the best of a horse’s ability.

“I think what we focus on when we’re getting horses and developing

the drafts - we love athletic horses. Their walk and fluency is a major focus

point with us in getting horses that we want to take to the sales.

“At the end of the day we’ve got to sell athletes. Sometimes they might

not be perfect in front, but you know there’s something about them. It’s

those sorts of horses we love to take to the sales.

“We really pride ourselves on race performance statistics. I think

now, more than ever given the current climate that we’re in, purchases

are going to have to be more prudent in the future with what people are

selecting.

“And I think, from our perspective, we wanted to put an emphasis on

the Maluka Yearling Academy. We do it differently. We’ve got our own

philosophy and our own morals and we get results.”

A major part of progressing the academy into the future is the move to

Avenel, with owner Peter Mills approaching the Andersons to relocate to

his Nagambie Road property.

“We were contacted by the owner and he expressed that he was

looking for somebody to take over the property and we were fortunate that

he considered us,” Anderson said. “I had a phone call with him and it just

worked from there.

“It’s a beautiful property that he presented to us and we’re very

fortunate with the location we’re in - it’s a great place to raise horses -

the fencing was absolutely immaculate. It’s a great climate and the perfect

spot to be able to grow our business.

“It was lovely that he approached us. He obviously did his due

diligence speaking to a few different parties and it was the perfect match

for us.

“What we want to do now, seeing as we’ve got more land and the

beautiful facilities here, is to expand on the broodmare side of things. We

can take a few more broodmares on and we’ll continue the same type

of yearling preparation that we’ve done this whole time, with the same

numbers, in and around the low to mid-twenties, going to the Melbourne

Premier Sale which is the sale that we focus on.

“So we’re looking to do that little bit more of an expansion. We also

love raising the weanlings, so once they get weaned they can come to us

and we can take them right the way through the preparation.”

One of Maluka’s biggest advocates is trainer Gordon Richards, who

purchased Lightning Stakes (Gr 1, 1000m) winner Gytrash for $40,000

from the farm’s 2017 Premier draft. He also has high hopes this spring

for Maluka graduate Crown Mint

(Hallowed Crown), twice Group-placed as

a two-year-old earlier this year, while another of Richards’ purchases from

the Andersons was Listed runner-up Charossa (Myboycharlie).

“I’ve always picked places that I know produce their horses well and

look well,” Richards told ANZ Bloodstock News. “You can talk to them and

they are very down to earth people and I love going to look at their draft

every time the sales are on.

“They present them well. They really do. I couldn’t speak more highly

of Luke and Mags, they are very good people to deal with. There’s a lot of

trust involved and I know I can go and talk to them and they’ll be honest

in their assessment of the yearlings.

“I work around the $40,000 to $50,000 mark, I might be a bit of a

chicken but I don’t want to pay too much money for a horse in case it

turns out no good and I’ve got owners that lose money. I bought another

one from them this year for $60,000 by Tarzino, and around that mark you

can’t go wrong.

“So far, they’ve turned out really good!”

For Anderson, he places much of the credit with his wife Mags,

stating that her background in New Zealand gave the couple the perfect

grounding ahead of launching their own operation.

“It was perfect that Mags was yearling manager at Cambridge Stud

for ten years,” he said. “She was there during Zabeel’s heyday and she

raised multiple sale-toppers that went on to win Group 1 races. There

are so many horses that are sold for big prices and then don’t necessarily

perform on the track.

“Mags managed Don Eduardo, Viking Ruler, St Reims, a raft of top-

quality horses. She learnt her trade with two of the greats in Sir Patrick

Hogan and Marcus Corban. It was a great advantage for us starting out

because her reputation in the preparation of yearlings was second to none

and we were able to get clients through that.”

Gytrash to lead Maluka spring assaultFor both trainer and vendor, the next couple of months could result

in the ultimate success story as Gytrash chases victory in The Everest. The

five-year-old became just the third horse secured for a spot in the $15

million contest last week when Inglis selected the chestnut to run in their

slot; he joined Nature Strip (Nicconi) and Classique Legend (Not A Single

Doubt) as confirmed runners.

“I’ve driven Gytrash up here myself and he’s come through the trip

really well,” Richards said, with his star sprinter entered to trial at Warwick

Farm tomorrow. “He got off the float bucking his brand off. He really

handled it well and I couldn’t be happier.

“He’ll run against a few other contenders for The Everest in

the Concorde but you’ve got to come up against them at some

point.

“I couldn’t be happier. We’ve just had dinner with the Inglis people

and I’m over the moon to be part of a deal with them. They’ve looked after

us very well since we’ve been here. They’ve put the money up and now

we’ve put the horse up so it’s over to us now to do it, but I’m very happy

and looking forward to it.”

There may not be a vendor’s sling for an Everest winner, but the

fact that a Maluka graduate will line up in the rich October feature fills

Anderson with pride.

“It’s a wonderful story,” recalled Anderson. “Gytrash was sent to us by

John and Mark Corcoran from New Zealand. They’re respected horsemen

in their own right over in New Zealand and they wanted to sell a horse in

Melbourne.

“The story that Gordon bought him for $40,000 and then the journey

that he’s taken him on, it’s just a brilliant story I think. To be in The Everest

is just an amazing achievement and a great training effort.”

And Gytrash may be just one success story among a strong group set

to fly the Maluka flag this spring.

“We’ve got a really good crop of current horses going around at

the moment,” Anderson said. “Horses such as Tavidance and Bless

Her, they are doing really well. Gordon’s got Crown Mint, which he

bought for $40,000 from us. We sold him on behalf of a great

friend of ours, Peter McIntrye, and he’s already run a place in the

South Australian Sires’ Produce at just his fourth start and he

may head on a Derby path, so he’s going to be one to look forward

to.

“Then there’s another one, a Redwood filly called Yosemite that

Robbie Griffiths trains. She had one start in the autumn as a two-year-old

and it was a really promising run and she’s just going to get better over

further.

“That was a great crop, the one that’s just turned three, and I can’t wait

to see how they all perform.”

Before too long, though, the Maluka Yearling Academy will be firing

up again, preparing the next potential top-liner for their moment in the

Oaklands spotlight early next year.Continued on page 5>>

Strong field assembles for WinxTen Group 1 winners are set to line up in

Saturday’s Winx Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) at

Randwick with Team Hawkes’ Master Of Wine

(Maxios) and Chris Waller’s Verry Eleegant

(Zed) the $6.50 equal favourites on TAB at the

time of going to press. The pair will be joined

in the field by top-flight scorers Dreamforce

(Fastnet Rock), The Bostonian (Jimmy

Choux), Avilius (Pivotal), Fierce Impact (Deep

Impact), Kolding (Ocean Park), Melody Belle

(Commands), Con Te Partiro (Scat Daddy) and

Flit (Medaglia d’Oro).

Funstar scratchedChris Waller announced yesterday that Group

1-winner filly Funstar (Adelaide) has been

scratched from the Winx Stakes, and will now

kick off her spring campaign in the Show

County Quality (Gr 3, 1200m) on the same

day. “Following much consideration, we have

decided to scratch Funstar from the Winx

Stakes on Saturday and she will instead run in

the Show County Quality over 1200m,” Chris

Waller Racing tweeted.

Winx a moment of truth for BrandenburgBrandenburg (Burgundy) is one of the few non-

Group 1 winners contesting the Winx Stakes,

however he finished third at the highest level in

the Doncaster Handicap (Gr 1, 1600m) earlier

this year, and his trainer John Sargent will use

the race as a guide to the level the four-year-old

is at. "He will take his part in it and he's ready to

go. It is front up now because there is no hiding,"

Sargent said. "From three to four, they've got to

develop. Big money has been turned down for

him to go to Hong Kong because the owners

want to race him, money isn't their objective.

But hopefully this will vindicate keeping him."

The Bostonian gets ideal drawMultiple Group 1 winner The Bostonian (Jimmy

Choux) has drawn the ace barrier for Saturday’s

Winx Stakes. Trainer Tony Pike couldn’t

be happier with the way the draw panned

out saying the inside gate will be a distinct

advantage for the six-year-old son of Jimmy

Choux (Thorn Park). “It is a huge advantage,”

Pike said. “The rail drops back to the true at

Randwick on Saturday. He is a horse that loves

to follow that running rail, as he showed in the

Canterbury Stakes. Some of the better chances

have drawn wide so he should get a lovely trip

right in behind the speed on the rail.”

Brooklyn ready to hustle at the ValleyJason Warren wasn't surprised by the style of

Brooklyn Hustle's (Starspangledbanner) return

to racing with her win at Moonee Valley almost

three weeks ago, but the trainer was taken

with how she recovered. The four-year-old will

return to the track to run in the Carlyon Stakes

(Listed, 1000m) on Saturday. Warren was

worried her first-up win might have taxed her

as she had not started since she finished fifth in

the Coolmore Stud Stakes (registered as Ascot

Vale Stakes) (Gr 1, 1200m) in November. "She

ran how I expected but she recovered better

than I expected as I thought the run would have

taken a bit out of her. But she recovered really

well," Warren said. "She had one soft jump-

out and with the Cranbourne trials not being

available to give her a hit-out away from her

home track, she went to the races underdone

but we knew she was down in class."

Important first-up win for Raison D'EtreJames McDonald has given a glowing

endorsement to Godolphin filly Raison D'Etre

(Exceed And Excel) who will head towards

black-type races after making a winning return

at Canterbury yesterday. Taking on a smart

midweek field, Raison D'Etre controlled the race

and extended her advantage in the straight to post

a runaway three-length win in the Bowermans

Commercial Furniture Handicap (1200m).

Raison D'Etre has shown ability from the outset

but the Godolphin team has had to work hard to

improve her temperament. "They've done a good

job keeping a lid on her, she is quite fiery to say the

least and gets herself worked up," McDonald said.

"She didn't execute the best in the past but today

she jumped extremely well and was able to get

into a really quick rhythm. She put them to bed

pretty quickly. She's got a bright future."

Ryan eyeing Heatherlie with SircconiNick Ryan will continue to aim high with Sircconi

(Nicconi) after the six-year-old gelding’s runner-

up performance in the P.B. Lawrence Stakes (Gr

2, 1400m) last start. The son of Nicconi (Bianconi)

will be aimed for the Heatherlie Handicap (Listed,

1700m) at Caulfield on August 29. "That's always

been our plan (to target the early spring races)

and we nearly pulled it off on Saturday," Ryan told

Racing.com. "He will head towards the Heatherlie

in two weeks, it's a 1700-metre race at our home

track at Caulfield. The horse is arguably in the best

form of his career and as long as he stays happy

and sound then I'm sure he's a big chance of

getting a nice race."

Robertson hopeful of Melbourne tripTrainer Tiarnna Robertson remains hopeful

that she can still send Fabergino (Maschino)

to Victoria to take part in the carnival. The

now six-year-old has won her past four starts,

including the Bob Hoysted Handicap (Listed,

1000m) at Flemington, and the A.J. Moir Stakes

(Gr 1, 1000m) at Moonee Valley on September

25 was set to be her next major assignment.

However, with restrictions still at Stage 4 in

Victoria, travelling remains unlikely although

Robertson hasn't given up hope. "I will fly

her over a month before the race, or the day

before, I don't mind, I just want her to have the

chance of winning a Group 1," Robertson told

Racing.com. "If we can't get a flight, then we'll

have one or two runs before her grand final,

which would be the Group 1 Winterbottom

Stakes at Ascot."

Offer knocked back for Nostradamus fillyFollowing her impressive five-length

victory last weekend, Victorian buyers

have made lucrative offers of up to $1.5

million for unbeaten WA filly Clairvoyance

(Nostradamus), but her trainer Darren

McAuliffe said she will remain in the west for

the time being. "She'll have a little break now

and then we'll bring her back for the Listed

Belgravia Stakes, the Burgess Queen and then

the Group 2 WA Guineas," he said. "She's not

for sale, end of story."

Sydney stewards investigating potential border breachRacing NSW stewards are reported to be

inquiring into whether some horses may

have crossed into the state from Victoria in

breach of the NSW-imposed border ban.

Racing NSW chief steward Marc Van Gestel

is quoted in The Sydney Morning Herald

as saying an investigation is going on “into

a number of cases” where breaches are

alleged to have taken place. There had been

speculation that the ban could be dropped

this week but it is now thought that will not

be the case.

Breakthrough win for Harvey at TaupoGlen Harvey sent out his first winner as a

trainer when Bounty (Darci Brahma) proved

too strong in the Te Akau 2019/2020 No 1 Stable

1100m maiden at Taupo yesterday. The 31-year-

old was confident of another bold showing

from the four-year-old who had placed on

debut and finished a solid fifth at his second

start before saluting at the third-time of asking

under a positive Andrew Calder ride. “It’s really

nice to get that first win out of the way, as it was

starting to eat at me a bit,” Harvey said. “It was

pretty satisfying and one of my best mates in

Andrew Calder rode him and gave him a perfect

ride.” Harvey, the son of racing and bloodstock

identities Bruce and Maureen Harvey who

operate Ascot Farm in Cambridge, has grown

up with racing in the blood and part owns the

galloper in conjunction with his parents.

Tiley works around Covid-19 restrictionsPukekohe trainer Nigel Tiley has found a work

around as he prepares to send seven horses to

race at Matamata on Saturday under the new

Covid-19 restrictions regarding travel out of

Auckland. New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing

has implemented directives which means

horses trained in the Auckland Supercity region

are able to travel to meetings provided they

are floated with an independent horse freight

company and not accompanied by the trainer

or stable staff based in the Auckland region.

While Tiley is unable to attend Saturday’s

meeting, he’s confident he’s leaving his horses

in good hands. “The good thing about this

industry is the number of people putting their

hand up to say they could help out,” Tiley said.

“It’s not going to be straightforward but I’ve

had a lot of people let me know they are only

too willing to help and that’s been great.” Tiley

already had a plan in place with a Waikato-

based staff member not helping out at the

Pukekohe stable since the Auckland region

went into lockdown level 3. “He knows all the

horses well and while I can’t go, this is the next

best thing,” the trainer added.

Little Avondale to host ‘A Date With A Stud’As part of the Williams family celebrations of 80

years breeding thoroughbreds, Little Avondale

consecutive weekends, kicking off on Friday

October 2 at 11am. Limited to 18 seats each day,

guests will enjoy a themed five course menu

94 for Teofilo

Former Darley shuttler Teofilo (Galileo)

sired his 94th individual stakes winner when

the Mark Johnston-trained Gear Up (2 c ex

Gearanani by Toccet) made it two wins from

two starts by taking out yesterday’s Acomb

Stakes (Gr 3, 7f) at York. A winner over the

course and distance on his debut last month,

Gear Up provided his trainer with a fourth

win in the race when getting up late on to beat

Highclere’s Spycatcher (Vadamos) by half a

length. Broxi (Kodi Bear) was a further three

lengths away in third. The sixth foal out of the

Toccet (Awesome Again) mare Gearanani, Gear

Up is a full-brother to Guaranteed, a Group 3

winner in Ireland for Jim Bolger, who bred both

colts. Teofilo, the sire of Melbourne Cup (Gr 1,

3200m) hero Cross Counter, stood at Darley’s

Kildangan Stud in Ireland for a fee of €40,000

(approx AUD$66,000).

Stakes (Gr 1, 1m 2f). Having already downed

Stradivarius (Sea The Stars) and Enable

(Enable) in a stellar 2020, Magical (Galileo)

became the latest high-profile European to

be put firmly in her place by the Goldophin

five-year-old. Sent into his now familiar front-

running position by William Buick, the Charlie

Appleby-trained Ghaiyyath never looked in

danger of relinquishing the lead and hit the line

three lengths in front of six-time Group 1 winner

Magical, with Lord North (Dubawi), himself an

elite level scorer at Royal Ascot, another length

and a quarter adrift in third. Ghaiyyath has now

won nine of his 12 starts, four of those victories

coming in Group 1 contests.

Arc next on the agenda for Godolphin’s star

A return to Longchamp and a step back up to

a mile and a half could be on the horizon for

Ghaiyyath with another tilt at the Prix de l’Arc de

Triomphe (Gr 1, 2400m) now possible. The five-

year-old has not tasted defeat since finishing

down the field in Europe’s showpiece race last

October and William Buick is keen for him to

try and complete his unfinished business in the

French capital. “He’s obviously very good at a

mile and a quarter,” Buick said after yesterday’s

success. “He stays a mile and a half. It’s going

to be interesting to see if he’ll get an end-of-

season target like the Arc. I don’t know. His

highness Sheikh Mohammed and Charlie will

decide what’s best for the horse. As long as the

ground isn’t bad, I’m sure the Arc would be

an interesting target for him. He’s the best I’ve

ridden without a doubt.” Ghaiyyath now trades

at no bigger than 6-1 for the Arc which this year

takes place on October 4.

Pyledriver puts himself firmly in the Leger picturePyledriver (Harbour Watch) galloped into

contention for next month’s St Leger Stakes (Gr 1,

1m 6.5f) with a commanding victory in yesterday’s

Great Voltigeur Stakes (Gr 2, 1m 4f) at York. The

Royal Ascot winner could finish only 11th in the

Epsom Derby (Gr 1, 1m 4f) last time out, but he left

that run behind when pulling clear of the field to

bag a second Group 2 success. Trained by William

Muir and ridden by his son-in-law Martin Dwyer,

Pyledriver beat Highland Chief (Gleneagles) by a

comfortable three and a half lengths, with favourite

Mogul (Galileo) a further half a length away in third.

Muir said after the race that the St Leger is now

very much on the agenda for the colt who failed to

attract a single bid when offered for 10,000gns at

the sales in 2017. The bookmakers clearly rate him

as a live chance for the final Classic of the British

season, giving him quotes of just 5-1.

Tatts October Book 1 catalogue releasedFoals out of Australian Group 3 winners Dawn

Wall (Fastnet Rock) and One Last Dance

(Encosta De Lago), as well as the Listed winner

Crafty (Manhattan Rain), all feature among the

547 lots to be offered at Book 1 of Tattersalls’

October Yearling Sale. Unsurprisingly, the

premier event at Park Paddocks, Newmarket,

to be staged from October 6 to 8, features a

heavyweight line-up, including full- or half-

brothers and sisters to 53 Classic and Group 1

winners and 256 Group or Listed winners. All

in all, there are 20 yearlings by Dubawi (Dubai

Millennium), 19 by Galileo (Sadler’s Wells), 32

by Frankel (Galileo), 21 by Kingman (Invincible

Spirit) and 33 by Sea The Stars (Cape Cross).

Battaash takes on seven in NunthorpeCrack European sprinter Battaash (Dark Angel)

will take on seven rivals in his quest to record

back-to-back wins in tomorrow’s Nunthorpe

Stakes (Gr 1, 5f), with key rivals Art Power (Dark

Angel) and A'Ali (Society Rock) also among the

declarations for the York contest. The Charlie

Hills-trained sprinter is an odds-on chance for

the Group 1 but in Art Power he faces a new

challenger. The three-year-old has improved

rapidly this season, from winning a novice event

at Newcastle to impressive wins at Royal Ascot

and then again at Group 3 level in Ireland. He

is rated as the leading danger to the favourite.

A'Ali, a three-time winner at Group 2 level, will

be ridden by William Buick for the first time.

Lanigan joins Four Star Sales as bloodstock adviserFormer trainer David Lanigan has joined Four

Star Sales, one of the leading consignors in North

America since its inception in 2002, as its bloodstock

adviser. Lanigan will help the company's clients

in all areas but with an emphasis on the private

purchase of horses in training and racing

management. Lanigan closed his Newmarket

training operation this spring to prepare for his

family's planned return to Lexington. Lanigan was

assistant trainer to Sir Henry Cecil for more than

five years before embarking on his own notable

13-year training career in 2007. He ended with 200-

plus winners including the Epsom Derby second

Main Sequence (Aldebaran), Park Hill Stakes (Gr

2, 1n 6.5f) winner Meeznah (Dynaformer), Dahlia

Stakes (Gr 2, 1m 1f) scorer Worth Waiting (Bated

Breath), and Royal Ascot winner Interception

(Raven’s Pass).

Owners dealt fresh blow in Ireland after latest government announcementFaint hopes of owners nearing a return

to racecourses in Ireland were dashed on

Tuesday after the government announced

that all sporting events would be held behind

closed doors until September 13 at the earliest.

Racing has been behind closed doors since it

resumed on June 8, but Horse Racing Ireland

had been planning to reintroduce owners once

Ireland entered phase four of the roadmap

for reopening society and business. It was in

phase four of that roadmap that the lifting of

people permitted at an outdoor event, from 200

to 500, was scheduled to come into place on

August 31. However, the new measures which

were announced by Taoiseach Micheál Martin,

dashed such hopes.

BY ANDREW HAWKINS | @ANZ_NEWS

The Covid-19 pandemic has

changed the traditional state of

play in so many aspects of life, but

it has also allowed for innovation

and modernisation.

So it is with the Hunter Valley stallion

parades this year, with farms seizing the

initiative to be able to experiment with different

demonstrations.

The annual parades, which were due

to operate under a new format this week,

have largely fallen by the wayside due to the

coronavirus situation in New South Wales,

meaning that the Hunter Valley has fallen quiet

in what is usually one of its busiest weeks.

Last night, Coolmore Australia launched

their first virtual stallion parade on their

website, coolmore.com.au, and also on

Facebook. The hour-long presentation sees

their stallions paraded as per usual, from a

stalwart like Fastnet Rock (Danehill) through to

a newcomer like Yes Yes Yes (Rubick), but also

incorporating interviews from leading industry

figures from right around the world

The benefit is that not only will this appeal

to the traditional audience that heads up to

Jerrys Plains, but anyone with an internet

connection will be able to view their 16 stallions

from the comfort of their home.

“The annual stallion parade at Coolmore

is always one of the highlights of the year for

us,” Coolmore Australia principal Tom Magnier

said. “We thoroughly enjoy opening the gates to

our clients and friends to present our incredible

roster of stallions in advance of the breeding

season.

“Unfortunately, we are unable to do so in

2020, so we have decided to bring the stallions

to our clients in the comfort of their own homes

by way of a virtual stallion parade.

“Included in this are interviews with some

of the most recognisable names in international

racing such as John Magnier, Bob Baffert,

Frankie Dettori, Aidan O’Brien and Chris

Waller, who give us a great insight into some of

the stars on our roster.”

For Coolmore Australia’s three new

additions - Yes Yes Yes, Calyx (Kingman)

and Magna Grecia (Invincible Spirit) - it is

something of a strange welcome into the

breeding arena.

“The three new additions to our roster this

year are particularly exciting and as you will see

in the virtual parade, they have all settled into

their new surroundings very well,” Magnier

said.

“We hope you enjoy the show and

encourage you to get in touch with a member

of the sales team to make an appointment to

come and see them in the flesh.”

Meanwhile, Widden Stud’s stallion parades

will proceed this week, with a parade a day from

today through to Sunday.

Widden, which will host their parades in

line with Covid-19 restrictions, will present

their ten stallions for inspection, including

their newest recruit Zousain and his prolific sire

Zoustar (Northern Meteor).

They will also parade first crop yearlings by

Supido (Sebring), as well as the very first foals

by Group 1-winning sprinters Trapeze Artist

(Snitzel) and Written By (Written Tycoon).

Attendance is by RSVP only, with attendees

required to call Widden on (02) 6549 9999 to

secure a spot. However, the farm is also inviting

visitors at any time, with inspections available

by request.

Analysis: After missing the start on debut and making ground when fifth

in a three-year-old handicap (1000m) at Canberra on August 7, Black

Duke advanced in class and scored a promising win here. He began well

on this occasion, travelled well in third place on the rails but was blocked

on straightening when he looked for clear running until Tommy Sherry

steered him through a late gap to grab a very good win nearing the post.

He should appreciate further and is a horse to watch. The favourite Cat

D’Oro worked a bit in the early stages, raced outside the leader (Lamelo),

got to the front in the straight and then battled on quite well for second.

Analysis: The Godolphin-raced Raison D’Etre looked smart in taking

out this three-year-old fillies’ maiden. Resuming at her third race start,

she soon crossed to the front and then travelled well at a comfortable

pace. James McDonald asked for her effort halfway down the straight and

she responded well, quickly established a clear advantage and then went

on to score easily by three lengths. It was a good effort and she looks to

be a filly with a good future. [KB]

wins from four starts in scoring a very good first-up victory here. She

front. She again beat off challengers on turning for home and then went

VERDICT There shouldn’t be much between Santosha and Hala Hala

Hala on their Ascot form and it will be interesting to see what thelatter, in particular, comes up with if she can be ridden more prominently on her firstrun since having a wind operation. However, the smooth traveller SACRED laysdown a strong message on her 5f form and this undemanding 6f should be wellwithin her scope. At bigger prices Sussex Garden and Miss Amulet are bothworth considering.[Emily Weber]

BETTING FORECAST: 2-5iLove, 7iFranconia, One Voice, 8iFrankly Darling,10iManuela de Vega, 25iAlpinista.

VERDICT This flat track is expected to suit the free-flowing LOVE and thisscintillating filly can provide another moment of magic to go with

her two brilliant wins in the 1,000 Guineas and the Oaks. All things being equal, it ishard to suggest a realistic rival with Frankly Darling proving no match for Love atEpsom, and both One Voice, who showed improved form in the Nassau, andFranconia tackling a new trip. The former has not had much luck in either of herlast two runs but her Goodwood run was another step forward so she may be theone to follow Love home.[Emily Weber]
