Our splendid weather has stayed with us well past the summer months and has contributed to many happy faces (perhaps just on the first tee!), and increased activity,

both on and off the course. With the arrival of fall weather and fewer Members out on the course, projects which were planned months ago are now commencing, and will continue for the next short while.

The most prominent are the changes being undertaken on hole 7, with the removal of the left side fairway bunkers and re-contouring of that portion of the fairway. In addition, the right side fairway bunker farther down has been removed and, similar to the left side, has been smoothed and seeded. Our Links crew, with guidance from our course architect, Jeff Mingay, have done an exceptionally good job with these changes, and we expect to see full playability in the near future. The decision was made to take advantage of the equipment and crew already at this location and to proceed with alterations of the remaining fairway bunker on the right. You will also see maintenance projects such as the 1st tee box and sandbanding as planned, on selected fairways. Our thanks go to the Links Committee Chair, Pat Adams, who not only ensures these projects are completed on time and on budget, but also spends considerable time monitoring all of the work on site. As always, we thank the Members for their patience while work on the course is undertaken.

Having attended most committee meetings in the past couple of weeks, I am happy to share with you that our Club has had a very good few months in all departments. Financially, we are in great shape to move forward with the capital projects approved at the last AGM. You can expect to see construction commencing in mid-October for the renovations of the much needed Junior Member club storage and activity room. Plans are also now finalized and a permit is in place to begin the kitchen renovations in January 2015.

The financial results year to date for our Food and Beverage services are better than originally anticipated. Members attending our events are no doubt impressed with the quality of food and service provided. The Pro Shop and staff are getting rave reviews, and our Links department is maintaining the excellent condition of the course and all are doing it within budget. Thanks to Scott Kolb, with the assistance of his dedicated administration staff, for keeping all these departments running smoothly.

One of the Board decisions last year was the introduction of the new position of Director of Sales and Marketing. Despite this role being new for our Club, our own Alistair Davies should be thanked for his outstanding efforts, with results well beyond our expectations. With the support of the Board and the Membership Committee, Alistair’s hard work and expertise enabled our Club to go from a deficit of Members to a waitlist in less than a year!

Alistair's contract came to a close in August, and the Board had determined it was in the best interests of the Club to maintain the position. A committee was formed and tasked with sourcing and hiring a suitable replacement. Not only does this position entail marketing the Club to prospective new Members but also involves promoting the Club’s facilities for events and special occasions to support the F&B sales. I am happy to report that after an extensive search spearheaded by our GM, we would like to welcome Winston Michell and his family to VGC. Winston commenced work on October 6th and has already been involved with a number of new Member leads. We would like to thank Clint Nickerson, Rick Myers, Dick Sparks, Val Fitzpatrick, Alistair Davies, Lindsay Bernakevitch, Scott Kolb and the Search Committee Chair, Nigel Bailey, for their hard work in searching for the ideal candidate.

Winston brings a wealth of experience and passion to VGC. His extensive resume lists over 16 years working at Arbutus Ridge, Raven at Lora Bay (Ontario), Georgian Bay (Ontario) and, most recently, at Cottonwood (Nanaimo). His previous roles have been: Golf & Events Sales Manager, Associate Golf Professional, Golf Shop Manager, Head Professional and, most recently, Assistant General Manager. Aside from being our new DSM, Winston is excited to spend time on our beautiful golf course with fellow Members and Staff, and is also enjoying spending time with his young family as they explore Victoria. Please introduce yourself to Winston and welcome him to our VGC family when you get the chance.

Two events organized by our Social Committee were very successful and well-attended by our Members last month. The first was a sold out Speaker Series with former Canadian High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, Jeremy Kinsman, providing a riveting and timely presentation on the historical rivalry between Russia and the Ukraine. The second event was the Member Appreciation and Hole in One Event attended by over 160 Members. Once again… (continued on page 4)

There have been some fabulous and dramatic cloud patterns over the water recently, the leaves are lighting up and the weather appears to be changing… It seems like it was just yesterday when the Club Championships were approaching. Now we are just days away from some of us heading south!

As we’ve seen in previous years, VGC women have made notable personal accomplishments over the playing season. These include increased participation at our internal competitions and interclubs: (Barbara Adams, Martha Ball, Wendy Brown, Shari Corrigan, Elizabeth Cruickshank, Cathy Dixon, Julie Findlay, Carin Gallie, Eva Kiess, Jo-Anne Nishimura-Mahrt, Catherine Mann, Lily Mitchell, Angela Pearson, Vikki Simmons, Vera Townsend), very impressive handicap reductions: (Barbara Adams, Sharon Boultbee, Elizabeth Dutton, Shelley Evans, Ali Gustavson, Judy Gorkoff, Donna Kanovsky, Catherine Larson, Alison Murdoch, Lynda Rozon, Debra Stockdill, Lynne Woodruff), in-spiring health recoveries: (Barb Barry, Camille Kelly, Doreen Mueller, Judy Prince, Rosemunde Robertson, Angela Walker) and numerous showings at external events: (Donna Adams, Linda Andrews, Marlene Bieller, Elaine Fitzgerald, Val Fitzpatrick, Catherine Larson, Alison Murdoch, Berne Neufeld, Anita Stuart). It is always special to include those Members with significant care-giving or professional responsibilities as schedules permitted.

This year also saw some revival in mixed event play. Hey! A reminder that the final mixed event is still to come in early November (while the rest of dear Canada is freezing). The Centennial Cup will be awarded for mixed competition as a tribute to our VGC Founding Sponsors who met one stormy November day 121 years ago (33.5 mm of rainfall was measured in Esquimalt BC on November 7, 1893, according to records from Environment Canada)! Fingers crossed we won’t be beset with the same stormy conditions but, if so, we have the perfect Food & Beverage service to remedy it! Note also that our winter eclectic program runs from Dec. 1st to March 1st to help you keep track of your winter-time successes!

At this time, we are trying a 2-year term for Women’s Captain, so I will be standing as your captain for 2015. A 2-year term is only possible with dedicated Staff and Board support, as well as cheerful assistance from Member volunteers, all of which got us through this year without a Vice-Captain. It is pure delight to welcome our 2015 Vice-Captain, Catherine Larson! Catherine has been an essential member of our Social Committee for 2 years and will be sitting next year on the Match Committee. In addition to the arrival of former non-resident Members (Marilyn Rook and Carla Robinson), we are excited about our newest women Members, many of whom are graduates of the successful program, Get Golf Ready, run by Gina Hosie!

Thank you to everyone who came out for the Annual Dinner - I hope everyone enjoyed themselves as much as I did. Also, safe keeping to those who are already southbound and safe travels to those about to head for their winter vacations!

Our Evans Caddies are hard-working and deserving students who have a chance to qualify for a scholarship valued at $150,000 through the Evans Scholarship program. Thanks to the efforts of our past president, Jim Wessel, we are happy to announce that tax receipts can now be issued through the Victoria Foundation for the generous contributions to the Evans Caddie Scholarship Program. We are very proud to

have three scholars enrolled, and your continued support is essential in maintaining its success. You may wish to consider joining the Evans Scholar Par Club and show your support by filling out the application found in the Pro Shop, online or at the Front Desk.

From the Kitchen Nathan Waters, Executive Chef We have now launched our final, seasonal new menus for 2014 in Macan’s. The Chef’s Menu and new Lunch & Dinner menu items seem to be very well received by our Members and guests. We are now gearing up

towards the holiday season, which is an exceedingly busy time of year for us at the Club and in the kitchen. We have all sorts of events booked, so we are very happy about that. With the closure of the kitchen in January due to much-needed renovations, I am planning to make this New Year’s Eve party one to remember with one last huge event in the old kitchen - make sure to attend to see what I have in store.

I would also like to thank all the Members for their overwhelming support of the kitchen renovation process; I appreciate it so much and am excited for the next chapter in the kitchen in the new year.

I was very fortunate this past September to attend the annual Professional Club Marketing Association Conference (PCMA).

This year we had 300 plus Membership Directors and Administrators from all over the United States and Canada, including

Golf, Yachting, Cricket, Polo, Tennis and Fitness Clubs. It was refreshing to discuss the successes and challenges we each

share, and to find creative solutions and ideas for the betterment of your Member experience.

For all of you heading to warmer climates for a winter getaway, I wish you safe travels. For the rest of us staying here in

Victoria, hopefully we will enjoy our usual mild Victoria winter (like golfing outside on Christmas Eve in pure sunshine).

The Pro Shop Lindsay Bernakevitch, Head Professional It has certainly been a fantastic summer of golf and we here in the Pro Shop are looking forward to an exciting fall and winter season as well. As you are settling into your Fall routine, I wanted to take a brief moment to highlight some of the events that we have planned for the coming months so that you can mark them in your calendars!

With the success of our Men’s Spring Shamble and Fall Scramble, we have decided to add a ‘Winter Shamble’ to be played the first Saturday in November (November 1st). This is a fantastic opportunity to play some golf with other Members at the Club and get to know some players outside of your usual foursome. The event will include a brunch, followed by golf and a deluxe appetizer dinner that is all designed to allow you to mix and mingle with your fellow Members. Sign up now by calling the Pro Shop or by adding your name to the list on the bulletin board in the lower hallway!

We have a new event being added to our fixture list this fall, the Founders Tournament. This is a mixed event that is designed to celebrate the Birthday of the Club and will be played on Saturday, November 8th, the closest Saturday to the Club’s actual founding date: November 7th, 1893. This will be an all day event where mixed teams can make up their own times and play in a two ball, one best net format competing for the Centennial Cup. Following your golf that day, don’t forget to stay for the debut of the Food Truck Showcase which will feature menu items to try that will be the eats served during kitchen renovations in January.

Lastly, I wanted to make sure that you marked the annual Pro Shop Wine & Cheese event in your calendar. As is tradition, the Pro Shop will be hosting a wine and cheese party on December 3rd from 4pm to 7pm. Please stop in for a glass of wine and a snack and perhaps pick up a last minute gift for a loved one. (If you would like to stay for Crab Night following the wine and cheese party, please make reservations early!)

ALSO: It’s also almost that time of year again. Grab a winter jacket or a pair of rain pants for a friend or family member for Christmas, and the Pro Shop will gift wrap your items for you, complimentary!

Pro Tip As a winter golfer, you may notice that you lose distance in the winter months. Some of this is due to the 5 layers of clothing inhibiting your swing but your golf ball can also be an important factor. When the temperature drops the ball's core gets harder. In order to hit your usual distance, this means you would have to generate more swing speed to compress the ball. The softer the core of the ball to start with, the easier it becomes to compress in cold temperatures. Using a ball like the Callaway supersoft, an ultra low compression ball, can make a big difference. Many golfers do the exact opposite and reach for the hardest ball they can find thinking it will give them more distance. All of our Pro's here at VGC switch to a softer core ball in the winter to keep our distances consistent.

We are pleased to report positive news of the Club’s financial

position heading into the final quarter; we do not anticipate a

Membership assessment will be necessary this year.

Revenues – For the first time in a few years, we have an

Active Member waitlist. The Membership Committee should

be commended for the creative new Membership packages

now available, and for recruiting Alistair Davies to implement

our new Member sales and initiation processes. New entrance

fees are projected to exceed $1,000,000 ($250,000 above budget)

and monthly dues will come in close to budget for the year

(they were below budget for many months). Both men and women

Active adult numbers are up and we succeeded in attracting

younger adult Members as well. Unfortunately, our Junior

and Intermediate ranks have declined. F&B is the shining

light this year with revenues on pace to be 8% better than

budget due primarily to increased Macan’s sales, with event

revenues also up slightly. F&B is projected to be $10,000-

$15,000 ahead of budget in 2014 after all costs are factored in.

Compared to a few years ago, this department has really

turned the corner and their efforts should be recognized for

this great turnaround.

Expenses – The Links Department is forecast to slightly

under-spend their budget this year. Administration is slightly

over budget due to higher than anticipated auditor and

Membership marketing costs. Pro Shop expenses are slightly

over for the year due to increased staff hours to improve

service.

Recommended Bylaw change - Overall, we are projecting a

small operating surplus in 2014. This projection is contingent

on Membership approval of a Bylaw change allowing the

Entrance Fee Reserve (Restricted Capital) to fund costs incurred

when a new Member joins the Club. In the past, our only cost

for attracting new Members was the monetary reward to the

sponsor for finding new Members. That changed when the

Board decided to hire a Director of Sales & Marketing, on a

trial basis, who received a combination of base salary and

commission. When the Club welcomed 50+ new Members in

the first 8 months (compared with 17 new Members in all of 2013),

the Board ended the trial. During the trial period, only the

DSM’s base salary and a small advertising budget were

included in the 2014 operating budget.

Many private clubs charge the costs associated with securing

new Members against the fees received; and retain the balance

strictly for capital expenditures. Our current Bylaws do not

permit us to implement this practice. The Finance Committee

and Board recommend that that commission and other costs/

fees incurred immediately upon acceptance of a new Member

be funded from Entrance Fee Capital Reserve.

If approved, the new Bylaw will continue to require the

Director of Sales & Marketing’s base salary be funded as an

Operating Expense, along with all

other Marketing related costs such as:

the Calgary Roadshow, New Members

Brochures, May 10 Showcase Event,

Rack Cards and other materials. The

Board will be requesting Membership

approval to implement this change

retroactive to January 1, 2014 at the

April 2015 Annual General Meeting

rather than calling for a Special

General Meeting. If the Membership

does not approve, then an assessment

will be required for the unbudgeted

operating expenses. More information

will be provided prior to the AGM.

The Social Corner Sam Duke Thanks to our enthusiastic Membership, the September 30th Speaker Series, featuring Jeremy

Kinsman, was a huge sell-out success. The November 18th Speaker Series event will feature the

internationally-renowned trombonist, Ian McDougall, Member of the Order of Canada. Ian will regale

the crowd with his tales of jazz adventures with the greats of music and entertainment, backed up by our

very own VGC Member, Dave Paulson, on piano. Reservations for the November 18th Speaker Series event are already

Also… whether we want to admit it or not, Christmas is right around the corner! Here at VGC, we have many great events

for the whole family happening throughout December. We start off with the Pro Shop’s Annual Wine & Cheese party on

December 3rd (go get your gifts wrapped), and the always popular Breakfast with Santa on December 7th - which always sells out

quickly, so early reservations are essential. Keep your eyes open around the Club for posters with more information on these

and other holiday events, as well as on the online Club calendar and in your social e-blasts.

Winston Michell Named VGC Director of Sales & Marketing After an extensive search, the Board has appointed well-known golf industry veteran, Winston Michell, to succeed Alistair

Davies in an expanded role as Director of Sales & Marketing (DSM). It was always understood that Alistair was accepting his

contract on a temporary basis, and that he would quickly return to Active Membership once the contract ended.

In the 10 months he held the position, Alistair achieved extraordinary results, recruiting in excess of 50 new Members and

helping to define the DSM role. He was also part of the selection committee which eventually chose Winston as his successor.

Winston Michell comes to VGC after 16 years in the golf industry, holding positions at Arbutus Ridge, Raven at Lora Bay

(Ontario), Georgian Bay (Ontario) and, most recently, at Cottonwood (Nanaimo). His experience includes roles as Golf &

Events Sales Manager, Associate Golf Professional, Golf Shop Manager, Head Professional and, most recently, Assistant

General Manager. He was also very involved in coordinating National and Provincial Amateur Championships, Nationwide

(now Web.com) Tour Events and the 2007 Skins Game.

As VGC’s DSM, Winston will be available not only to find, meet and play with prospective new Members, but also to help

attract F&B events to the Club and assist the Administration department in developing other Member Services. Be sure to

take a moment to introduce yourself to Winston; and don’t hesitate to arrange for him to play with a prospective Member or

pursue an event opportunity.

The Board, on behalf of all Members, thanks Alistair for his energy and commitment to growing the VGC Membership and

solidifying our financial future, as well ensuring new Members were warmly welcomed. Thanks also go to the selection

committee, chaired by Nigel Bailey and including Val Fitzpatrick, Clint Nickerson, Rick Myers, Dick Sparks, Alistair

Davies, Lindsay Bernakevitch and Scott Kolb (ex-officio) for their hard work in evaluating the dozens of candidates.

The 2014 LINKS TO CHANGE (L2C) was a huge success, breaking attendance records for each of the three charity events

held in July. Moreover, the funds raised for these events have taken the Club’s total contributions to local charities to well over

the 1M mark. Many thanks to a hard-working and dedicated L2C Committee, and in particular, to Patricia Mariash from

Bayview Place who brought in the greater part of the sponsorship funds. Recipient charities include Victoria Women’s

Transition House, Pacific Centre Family Services, KidSport and the Evans Scholarship Program.
