Volkswagen Club of Western Australia (Inc) 1955 - 2015...our 60th Anniversary is coming!
Dear Members,
I was struggling this month to think of what to write in this spot but I was inspired by a car
event that I went to in Fremantle on 13th July... I attended the “Custom Cars and Coffee” show. The
turnout was huge so huge that around 100 cars were turned away as there was physically not enough
space. Overflow car parks were quickly filled. Luckily us Veedubbers made an early start and got
parked together as usual the VWs attracted attention perhaps more than the Ferraris. We had 4 Kombis
and 4 Beetles with a Golf joined us a bit later.
I will be attending another huge show in July in the UK. Its called BugJam and if you haven’t seen or
heard of this show look it up. It is massive!!! It’s a weekend affair with thousands of vehicles primarily
Volkswagen but due to the entertainment it attracts a wide range. I am so excited I feel like a kid. I’ll
bring some pictures back to share next month!
This brings us to OUR own events, ones that you can join in on – the calendar is getting booked out so
get your diaries out and pencil them in.
Next is a camping trip to Dwellingup in August on the weekend of 30th. Next is a camping trip to Dwellingup in August on the weekend of 30th. Next is a camping trip to Dwellingup in August on the weekend of 30th.
Another major date notification is this years Day of the Volkswagen is now 30th November 2014 at
Taylor Reserve Victoria Park (same location as the last few years)
Feel free to make suggestions of the types of events you like to attend or want to see more of. It could
be a simple cruise up the coast – let us know or even attend one of our events planning meetings with
your plan and we’ll give you support and guidance needed to make it happen.

1955 was a milestone for Volkswagen in more ways than one. It was the year that the millionth VW
Beetle was produced and it coincided with the formation of our Volkswagen Club of Western Aus-
tralia (Inc). Next year will see the club celebrate it’s 60th year, making it one of the oldest “name” car
clubs in Australia.
Your club committee has commenced making preparations for the year of celebrations and to include
you, our members, we start with running a LOGO competition and we are looking for your ideas/
suggestions (e.g. events, merchandise etc) to help make the 60th year a memorable one.
The committee is looking for a LOGO to identify and acknowledge THE CLUB and also the 60 YEARS.
Sometimes the simplest is the best...you can produce a complete logo or provide a sketch or even just a
concept.
The winning logo design/concept will be decided by the club committee and become the property of the
club. The winner will receive a $60 voucher to spend on club merchandise...this can be used on current
stock or maybe on new 60th Anniversary items.
Entries can be sent to our PO BOX addressed as “60 Years Logo” or emailed here to
[email protected] with a subject matter of “60 Years Logo”...entries close has been
extended to the last mail received on 29th August 2014.
At the top of the page is the club’s official logo...below are some ‘concepts’...you may like one of these
or they may help you with an idea.

Message to VW Club members…
Hi all this is the first time for this event and we are advertising here for your information only. We are
not organising an official club run to attend, but we are all welcome to join in. Post up on the Club Fo-
rum if you are keen.
Message from the organisers...
The Hotham Show and Shine is fast approaching, time is running short to get the advantages of a pre
entry in as the discounted pre entry closes on August 31st.
Pre entries get our goody bag with event shirt, hat and stubby holder and other sponsor freebies.
The first 250 pre entries also get a Metso Minerals (major sponsor) bag full of goodies and an Australi-
an Government bag with information on how to not get caught out purchasing that new project.
We have two bands playing all weekend, Filthy Habits who play good old Aussie pub rock and a blues
band that also play good old rock and roll, Browndog and the Muttley’s.
We look forward to showing you a great weekend while we all raise funds for the Boddington Hospital.

Volkswagen's Amarok
Voted Best Pick-Up For Third Straight Year At
The 2014 Auto Express Awards
Amarok praised for its high build
quality and efficient engines
Volkswagen’s highly-acclaimed
Amarok pick-up has scooped the
award for ‘Best Pick-Up’ for the
third consecutive year at the Au-
to Express New Car
Awards. Praised for its rugged
styling, carrying capacity, effi-
cient engines and high-quality
interior the Amarok remains the
vehicle of choice in the pick-up
sector.
Auto Express, Britain’s biggest-
selling weekly car magazine, held
its New Car Awards recently in
London. Announcing the results
before a VIP industry audience
the magazine’s Editor in Chief,
Steve Fowler, said: ‘The Amarok
remains the best pick-up by
some margin. Nothing comes
close to its brilliant combination
of carrying ability and car-like
road manners, with the efficiency
expected by demanding buyers.
The fact it has the rugged looks
required of a class-leading pick-
up is the icing on the cake.’
Commenting on the award
Kirsten Stagg, Head of Market-
ing, added: ‘We are thrilled to
receive this award for Amarok.
To gain this level of recognition
for the third year running from
such a respected title is testa-
ment to the quality and engineer-
ing excellence of the vehicle.
‘Demand continues to grow year-
on-year, which is a trend we ex-
pect to continue thanks to the
recent launch of the limited-
edition Amarok Canyon. This
award means a great deal to eve-
ryone at Volkswagen Commercial
Vehicles.’
The latest Auto Express award
adds to the list of more than 12
accolades claimed by Volkswagen
Commercial Vehicles in the past
year.

Establishment of a National Re-
search & Development and Plan-
ning Centre in Chattanooga
Within the framework of its Strat-
egy 2018 plan, the Volkswagen
Group is expanding its industrial
footprint in the US. The Board of
Directors of Volkswagen Group of
America has decided to award
the production of the new
midsize SUV to the Chattanooga
plant in Tennessee.
The Group will be investing a to-
tal of approximately US$900 mil-
lion (€643 million) in the produc-
tion of a newly developed, seven-
passenger SUV, and creating
2,000 additional jobs in the US.
About US$600 million (€432 mil-
lion) will be invested in Tennes-
see.
“The United States of America is
and will remain one of the most
important markets for
Volkswagen. Over the past few
years, we have achieved a lot
there. We are now launching the

campaign in the US. With the
midsize SUV, the expansion of
the Chattanooga plant and the
new development centre, the fo-
cus is on the wishes of the US
customer. This is also a strong
signal for the US as an industrial
and automobile production loca-
tion. The Volkswagen brand is
going on the attack again in
America,” said Prof. Dr. Martin
Winterkorn, Chairman of the
Board of Management of
Volkswagen Aktiengesellschaft, in
Wolfsburg.
“The Chattanooga-built midsize
SUV will allow us to fulfil the
wishes of our dealer network,
bringing new customers to our
showrooms and additional growth
for the brand,” said Michael Horn,
President and CEO Volkswagen
Group of America. “We are eager
to be entering this growing vehi-
cle segment with a world-class,
seven-passenger SUV from
Volkswagen.”
Apart from investing in the pro-
duction of a new vehicle, the
Chattanooga location is to re-
ceive a new, independent Nation-
al Research & Development and
Planning Centre of the
Volkswagen Group of America for
project coordination in the North
American market. The objective
is to identify customers’ feedback
in the market and to integrate
them more expeditiously into ex-
isting and planned vehicle mod-
els. This will lead to the creation
of approximately 200 qualified
engineers working in Chattanoo-

This decision is another element
in the investment programme
that the Volkswagen Group has
launched in the region. From
2014 to 2018, the Volkswagen
Group will be investing more than
US$7 billion in the US and Mexi-
co. It is Volkswagen’s goal to de-
liver 800,000 vehicles in the US
by 2018.
"Today is an exciting day not just
for Chattanooga and Hamilton
County but for all of Tennessee,
and I want to thank Volkswagen
for its significant long-term in-
vestment in our state,” Governor
Bill Haslam said. “The impact of
this announcement goes far be-
yond the 2,000 new jobs because
of the large multiplier effect of
the automotive industry, and
adding an additional manufactur-
ing line and the National Re-
search & Development and Plan-
ning Centre sends a clear signal
that Tennessee can compete with
anyone in the global market-
place.”
Christian Koch, CEO and Chair-
man of Volkswagen Group of
America Chattanooga Operations,
said: “We are proud to be making
the new midsize SUV here. This
is fantastic news for the plant
and proof of the confidence
placed in the workforce that does
a great job here making high-
quality cars every day.”
At Chattanooga, the new SUV will
be integrated into existing plant
structures. Existing areas in pro-
duction will be used for the as-
sembly of the midsize SUV. A to-
tal floor space of 50,000m²
(approx. 538,000 sq ft) will be
added to the existing production
facility. The midsize SUV, which
is based on the CrossBlue con-
cept vehicle, was developed es-
pecially for the North American
market. The CrossBlue made its
global debut at the 2013 North
American International Auto
Show in Detroit.

Volkswagen
Jetta 118TSI Leads The Pack
In Running Cost Survey
Volkswagen’s medium car, the
Jetta, has once again been recog-
nising for its outstanding value,
leading its class in the annual
running cost survey produced by
the Royal Auto Clubs of Victoria,
South Australia, Queensland and
Tasmania.
The Jetta 118TSI with a seven-
speed DSG is least expensive to
run in the hotly-contested medi-
um car class in the survey for
2014, with an overall weekly cost
of between $179.07 and
$188.43, depending on state-
specific regulatory costs; equat-
ing to a cost average as low as
77.6 cents per kilometre.

The survey considers a number
of factors impacting the cost of
ownership of a new vehicle, in-
cluding the vehicle’s list price
(RRP $27,490), interest on a loan
and depreciation, average fuel
usage and servicing costs includ-
ing tyres.
The Volkswagen Jetta 118TSI is
powered by a fuel efficient twin-
charged 1.4-litre petrol engine
which, coupled with a seven-
speed dual clutch transmission,
maintains a combined fuel cycle
figure of 6.2-litres per 100km.
The Jetta, like all new
Volkswagen models, also comes
with Volkswagen’s Capped Price
Servicing and roadside assistance
as standard, as well as
Volkswagen’s three-year / unlim-
ited kilometre new car warranty.
International
Engine Of
The Year
Award 2014:
TSI Technology Becomes
Serial Winner
Prestigious accolade goes for the
ninth time in succession to twin-
charged TSI from Volkswagen
TSI technology from Volkswagen
today once again received the
'International Engine of the Year
Award': the 1.4 litre TSI twin-
charger, which won for the ninth
time in succession in the 1.0 to
1.4 litre cubic capacity category,
is thus the most successful en-
gine in the history of this interna-
tional competition for engine
technology.
For several years, the pithy TSI
brand has stood for intelligent
downsizing from Volkswagen. De-
spite their comparatively small
cubic capacity the TSI engines
produce, for instance, levels of
power output that until not so
very long ago only engines with a
considerably bigger capacity were
able to offer.
The TSI engine is currently avail-
able in differing cubic capacity
classes and levels of power out-
put ranging between 66 kW and
221 kW. The first TSI
engine was in
2006 the twin-
charger, now
once again
an award
winner,
which
thanks
to an
addi-
tional
turbo-
charger
and me-
chanical
compressor
has especial-
ly high torque
and is very effi-
cient.
The TSI twincharger is available
in different power levels from 103
kW to 125 kW and continues to
be offered for a multitude of
models – in the Beetle, Jetta,
Eos, Golf Cabriolet, Touran, Ti-
guan, Passat and Sharan.
However, the downsizing is not
yet finished: the latest addition
to the TSI family is the 1.0 litre
version delivering 66 kW in the
new Polo TSI BlueMotion. This
first one-litre, three cylinder di-
rect injection turbo engine will be
making its debut in the second
half of the year, featuring fuel
consumption of just 4.1 l/100 km
and thus a CO2 figure of 94 g/
km.
Its predecessor, delivering an
identical 66 kW, consumed 4.9
l/100 km (equating to 113 g/km
CO2).
With active cylinder management
(ACT), Volkswagen has since last
year also been offering a technol-
ogy that enables an additional
reduction in fuel consumption by
temporarily turning off the sec-
ond and third cylinder.
The award for the 1.4 TSI was
presented today in Stuttgart to
Carsten Helbing, Head of Applica-
tion EA888 and Alternative Fuels
in the Volkswagen Petrol Engine
Development Division. "Our
successful TSI engines
have for years
been impres-
sively demon-
strating that
the combi-
nation of
cubic ca-
pacity
reduc-
tion, di-
rect in-
jection
and intel-
ligent
charging
produces
great dynamic
performance while
at the same time deliv-
ering low emission and fuel
consumption figures," explained
Helbing at the award presenta-
tion.

Rally Finland
Finnish
celebrations VW driver
Latvala triumphs in
WRC home
event A great day for Jari-Matti Latvala
and Miikka Anttila, a great day for
Volkswagen, and a great day for
Finland: for the first time in four
years, a Finnish duo triumphed in
their home event in the FIA World
Rally Championship (WRC), giving
their compatriots reason to cele-
brate with abandon. Latvala/
Anttila won ‘their’ rally in the Polo
R WRC in what proved to be a
veritable thriller all the way to the
finishing line, clinching victory
over their teammates Sébastien
Ogier/Julien Ingrassia (F/F) by
just 3.6 seconds.
Volkswagen’s excellent team suc-
cess in the toughest rally of the
year was rounded off by Andreas
Mikkelsen/Ola Fløene (N/N) fin-
ishing in fourth place overall.
Volkswagen has therefore
equalled its best team result to
date in the WRC, which it set at
Rally Argentina in May. The rally
known as ‘Formula 1 in the forest’
marks the twelfth consecutive
rally win for the Wolfsburg-based
team, and is also its eighth win in
the current season. Ahead of Ral-
ly Germany, Volkswagen there-
fore has match balls to clinch all
three WRC championship titles –
for the manufacturer, the driver
and the co-driver.
“It’s been a fantastic weekend at
Rally Finland,” said Dr Heinz-
Jakob Neußer, Volkswagen Board
Member for Technical Develop-
ment, who was in Finland to sup-
port the Volkswagen team. “Both
Jari-Matti Latvala and Sébastien
Ogier dominated 25 of the 26
special stages and the final day of
the rally couldn’t have been more
exciting.
There was no knowing who would
actually win the rally until they
finally crossed the line. The Power
Stage once again demonstrated
what the team and the Polo R
WRC are capable of. We are very
happy with the result in Finland
and congratulate Jari-Matti Lat-
vala and Miikka Anttila on this
huge success in front of a home
crowd.”
Recipe for success: good self-
confidence and a healthy dose
of ‘sisu’
The Finnish word ‘sisu’ is the
most accurate way to describe
the key to Jari-Matti Latvala’s
success in his home event. ‘Sisu’
is said to be untranslatable, but
can be loosely translated as pow-
er, stamina or tenacity, and also
intransigence or fighting spirit.
And Jari-Matti Latvala demon-
strated all of these during Rally
Finland.
On the second day of the rally,
Latvala, who is second in the
championship, dominated the
proceedings in the morning, but
had something of a setback in the
afternoon. Having hit a large pot-
hole during the 20th special
stage, a damaged brake line left
him with no braking power on the
front right-hand wheel, which
caused him to lose around 27
seconds of his lead. Latvala
therefore tackled the final three
special stages on Sunday with a
very slim lead of just 3.4 sec-
onds, and demonstrated not only
his driving skills, but also his
mental strength.
Since the start of the 2014 sea-
(Continued on page 28)

son, Jari-Matti Latvala has also
been drawing on the support of
mental trainer Christoph Treier.
Latvala was therefore relaxed
during the special stages in his
home event, in spite of the huge
public expectations and his ex-
tremely high motivation. And this
resulted in success, with Latvala/
Anttila securing 14 of the 26 pos-
sible fastest times in the rally.
Prestige duel to the very last
metre: Latvala vs. Ogier
Rally Finland, which is considered
to be the mother of all WRC ral-
lies, was very much all about Jari-
Matti Latvala/Miikka Anttila and
their Volkswagen teammates
Sébastien Ogier/Julien Ingrassia
this year, with 25 of the 26 possi-
ble best times being scored by
one or the other of the two
Volkswagen duos.
The only rivals who were able to
keep pace were Kris Meeke/Paul
Nagle (GB/IRL, Citroën), who
picked up one fastest time and
finished in third place overall. The
Latvala vs. Ogier duel narrowed
to a difference of 3.7 seconds
ahead of the final Power Stage,
and was then reduced further to
3.6 seconds at the finishing line.
On multiple occasions during their
high-octane duel, Latvala and
Ogier hit a top speed of 200 kilo-
metres per hour, at which point
their speed was kept in check by
the speed limiters.
With countless jumps, some as
far as 60 metres, and also plenty
of blind hill crests and corners,
the WRC drivers had to deliver
maximum precision. And for the
38th time in the history of the
WRC, a rally was won with a mar-
gin of less then ten seconds.
Great success, part two:
match balls for Volkswagen
head of home event in Germa-
ny
Thanks to its one-two victory in
Finland, Volkswagen has extend-
ed its lead in the manufacturers’
standings in the FIA World Rally
Championship (WRC) to 175
points over their closest rival Cit-
roën. This therefore gives
Volkswagen its first match ball
ahead of the brand’s own home
event, Rally Germany: if it suc-
ceeds in defending a 172-point
lead, the manufacturers’ champi-
onship title will go to Wolfsburg
for the second year in a row.
The German rally could also be a
decider in favour of Volkswagen in
the drivers’ standings too: follow-
ing Rally Finland, Sébastien Ogier
and Julien Ingrassia have a lead
of 121 points over the best non-
Volkswagen duo, Mads Østberg/
Jonas Andersson (N/S, Citroën).
If they still have a lead of 112
points after Rally Germany, it will
definitely be a Volkswagen duo
who will celebrate victory in the
drivers’ and co-drivers’ standings.
Ogier/Ingrassia are currently in
the lead on 187 points, followed
by their teammates Latvala/
Anttila (143 points) and Mikkelsen
(95 points).
Facts, facts, facts: actual and
potential records
With Rally Finland now over,
Volkswagen has racked up a total
of 19,996.66 kilometres during
391 special stages since it joined
the WRC with the Polo R WRC in
January 2013. This is equivalent
to driving half way round the
globe – at a rally pace, of course.
During this period, Volkswagen
has scored 269 fastest times and
a total of 618 top-three times.
Volkswagen has celebrated victo-
ry 18 times out of 21 WRC rallies,
twelve of which it has scored in
succession across two seasons.
And by winning in Finland,
Volkswagen has matched the pre-
vious best of eight wins in the
same season, which Citroën
achieved in 2011.
For Volkswagen, the eighth rally
of the season gave it its fifth one-
two win of the year, and the sev-
enth such win overall. Jari-Matti
Latvala celebrated his 44th podi-
um finish in the WRC, twelve of
which he has achieved with
Volkswagen. It was also his elev-
enth outright win, and his fourth
such win in the Polo R WRC.
The icing on the cake: bonus
points for Volkswagen drivers
in the Power Stage
To date, Volkswagen has picked
up Power Stage bonus points on

37 occasions – in the 20 Power
Stages held so far. In addition,
Ogier/Ingrassia gave Volkswagen
its 15th consecutive Power Stage
win in Finland. Latvala, the winner
of the 2014 Rally Finland, has
won five Power Stages in his WRC
career, two of which with
Volkswagen. Ogier meanwhile has
a tally of 15 Power Stage wins,
eleven of which with Volkswagen.
And Mikkelsen also has one Power
Stage win to his name, a victory
he scored in the Polo R WRC.
And then there was …
... a very loud wake-up call. All
the teams’ drivers were awoken
by a fire alarm at the central hotel
for Rally Finland on Sunday morn-
ing. The high-pitched alarm was
set off by Luis Moya, two-time
world champion alongside Carlos
Sainz, who now works in the
Volkswagen team. Moya put a
slice of bread in the toaster, then
forgot about it, and the toaster
was soon churning out smoke and
turning his toast into charcoal. It
cannot, however, be confirmed as
to whether Moya really did say
“For Heaven’s sake, Carlos,
please turn the toaster off”.
FIA World Rallycross
Championship
Heikkinen claims
first win of the
season in the Polo
RX Supercar
Belgium: Celebrations at
Marklund Motorsport after round
six of this season’s FIA World Ral-
lycross Championship: Toomas
“Topi” Heikkinen (FIN) produced a
consistently strong display in the
Volkswagen Polo RX Supercar in
Mettet, Belgium, to claim overall
victory for the Swedish team.
Heikkinen had to settle for third
place after the opening two heats,
while team-mate Anton Marklund
(S) – also in the Polo RX Supercar
– held the overall lead. However,
Heikkinen then produced a flaw-
less performance in the final race
to climb to the top of the overall
standings, while Marklund eventu-
ally finished fifth. “I am absolutely
over the moon,” said Heikkinen.
“It is my first World Rallycross
Championship win and I hope
now that this is just the start of a
fantastic second half of the sea-
son.”
Victory in Belgium also saw Heik-
kinen climb one position in the
World Championship standings,
and the Finn now lies third with
117 points. Marklund is currently
fifth with 85 points. The next
World Championship races will
take place at the Circuit Trois-
Rivières in Canada on 7 and 8 Au-
gust.

Global Rallycross (GRC)
Andretti drivers pick up
important championship
points in Charlotte
After the victory at the Global
Rallycross race in New York a
week ago, the Volkswagen team
Andretti Autosport suffered a
slight setback in their fight for the
championship at the fifth race of
the season in Charlotte.
On the extremely rough Dirt
Track in the US state of North
Carolina, unusually the two An-
dretti drivers Scott Speed (USA)
and Tanner Foust (USA) did not
finish in the top three in their
Volkswagen Polo RX Supercars
with over 500 hp: Speed finished
fifth, Foust, hindered by tyre
problems, was eighth. Victory
went to Ken Block (USA).
The former Formula 1 driver Nel-
son Piquet jr. (BR) now leads the
overall standings with 227 points.
Speed is in second with 181
points.
British Formula 3
Championship
Three VW victories at the clas-
sic in Spa-Francorchamps
Ed Jones (UAE) celebrated all
three victories available for the
taking at the British Formula 3
European Championship classic
in Spa-Francorchamps –
“powered by Volkswagen”. His
team-mate at Carlin Motorsport,
a guest starter like Jones, also
made it onto the podium three
times in the tenth to twelfth rac-
es of the season – twice in sec-
ond place, once in third.
The British Formula 3 Champion-
ship race in Spa-Francorchamps is
traditionally a part of the week-
end programme for the 24 hour
race for GT vehicles. 21 of 30 top
ten results available for the taking
on the “Ardennes roller coaster”
went to teams who have placed
their trust in Volkswagen engines.
At the fifth race weekend of the
junior series, races 13 to 15 will
be held in Thruxton (GB) from 15
to 17 August.
Volkswagen Polo Cup Russia
Bogomolov wins the fifth race
Arkady Bogomolov and co-driver
Oleg Zimin (RUS/RUS) won the
fifth race of the Volkswagen Polo
Cup Russia, which was held as
part of the Russian rally cup Ros-
tov Velikiy. At the event with six
special stages covering a total of
81 kilometres, the Russian duo
benefited from Alexey Igatov's
(RUS) retirement, who was in the
lead when he came off the track
and was unable to finish the race.
Second place went to Andrey
Vavilin (RUS), while Roman
Katunin (RUS) took third place.
The seventh race of the
Volkswagen Polo Cup Russia will
be held on 8 and 9 August at the
Rally Wyborg between Saint Pe-
tersburg and the Finnish border.
Volkswagen Scirocco R-Cup
Larini wins Show Race in
Moscow – Seidel impresses in
eighth place
Ex-Formula One driver Nicola
Larini (I) won the Show Race in
the Volkswagen Scirocco R-Cup in
Moscow. After 13 laps of the 3.91
-kilometre Moscow Raceway, the
Italian crossed the finish line first
ahead of another ex-Formula One
driver, Jan Lammers (NL), and

local Russian favourite and WTCC
driver Mikhail Kozlovskiy. The
safety car had to make an unwel-
come appearance on lap four,
when Sven Hannawald (D) collid-
ed with Inessa Tushkanova
(RUS), resulting in former Olym-
pic ski-jumping champion Han-
nawald having to retire from the
race. Manuel Reuter (D) suffered
the same fate with just two laps
to go. The mentor for the young
drivers had to park up after a
crash with young Russian Viktor
Shaitar. Playmate Doreen Seidel
(D) started from the back of the
grid, but fought back impressively
to finish eighth. 15 drivers took
part in the invitational race in the
Russian capital, which was spon-
sored by Volkswagen’s partner
Gazprom.
FIA Formula 3 European
Championship
Verstappen, King and
Blomqvist on the podium in
Moscow
After six wins in a row,
Volkswagen driver Max Verstap-
pen (NL) had to settle for two po-
dium finishes in the Formula 3
European Championship at the
Moscow Raceway. The Dutchman
came home third in the opening
race and second in race three.
Together with Jordan King (GB)
and Tom Blomqvist (GB),
Verstappen ensured that the podi-
um featured at least one driver
“powered by Volkswagen” in each
of the three races. King crossed
the finish line in second place in
race one, while Blomqvist was the
Volkswagen representative on the
podium in the second race, com-
ing home third.
Verstappen suddenly slowed down
on lap eleven of race two, and
subsequently deposited his Dal-
lara Volkswagen in the garage
just a little later. The weekend’s
dominant man was Esteban Ocon
(F), who extended his lead in the
championship with three out-
standing start-finish victories.
Volkswagen Polo R-Cup India
Tharani and Thomas win in
Coimbatore
Karthik Tharani Singh (IND) and
Bonnie Thomas (IND) won the
two races on the second weekend
of the Volkswagen Polo R-Cup In-
dia in Coimbatore. Both races at
the circuit in the south of India
were once again spectacular:
Tharani Singh won race one,
which was suspended due to a
crash, ahead of Anshul Manoj
Shah (IND) and Karminder Pal
Singh (IND).
The second race took place on a
damp track, resulting in several
braking errors and spectacular
duels. Thomas coped best with
the conditions, crossing the finish
line ahead of Pal Singh and Yatin
Magu (IND). The next races in the
Volkswagen Polo R-Cup will take
place in Noida from 3 to 5 Octo-
ber.
Volkswagen Racing Cup
Di Resta wins in Spa to move
into the overall lead
Stefan Di Resta (GB) has taken
over at the top of the overall
standings in the Volkswagen Rac-
ing Cup. The fifth race weekend of
the popular British touring car cup
in Spa-Francorchamps (B) saw
the younger brother of DTM star
Paul Di Resta take the overall lead
in the series courtesy of a fourth
place in race one and victory in
the second race.
Rookie Lucas Orrock (GB) won
the opening race in his Scirocco R
at the legendary “Ardennes
Rollercoaster”, finishing ahead of
David Sutton (GB), also in a Sci-
rocco R, and James Walker (GB)
in a Golf GTI. Defending champi-
on Aaron Mason (GB), who came
into the weekend as overall lead-
er, fell back through the field fol-
lowing a puncture whilst running
second on the penultimate lap.
Orrock looked certain to win the
second race, until he lost the
front bumper from his Scirocco R
with three laps to go, resulting in
a flat spot from braking. The ben-
eficiary was Di Resta, who came
through to cross the finish line
first ahead of Golf GTI driver Joe
Fulbrook (GB) and Orrock.
With four races to go, Di Resta
now leads Fulbrook by two points
at the top of the overall stand-
ings.

VW-BASED
CAR NEEDS
NEW
HOME... Contact: Nick Coplin

Email:
Unfortunately, it’s come time for
me to let go the car I built all
those years ago when I was
young, energetic, and had far
more spare time on my hands.
However, it would make it easier
to do so, if I could pass it on to
someone who could take it on as
a project though… and am think-
ing it would suit someone who
would have passion for this sort
of thing… and definitely the skill
for it!
The car is still effectively regis-
tered in WA, there is no need for
a pit inspection, etc. Car is insur-
able for TPD…
The car was first registered in
NSW back in 1991 where it was
built. I had an engineering certif-
icate and all that, so it was ap-
proved as road legal, no limita-
tions. Registration was trans-
ferred to WA (and went over the
pits, etc) in 1997 when I finally
moved it over here.
Unfortunately, with kids, work, a
busy life, etc, I’ve not really used
it enough the past few years –
and like with most neglected
things, they age quicker as a re-
sult.
Engine starts and runs, but main
problems that I am aware of:
brakes – seem to have blend
dry in the last 12months
(worked beforehand). Sus-
pect leaky seals in the rear
slave cylinders
some further rust and fatigue
in the original VW sheet
structure
body would need a good bit
of TLC, repaint etc…
new tyres a must – just be-
cause the rubber is just so
old
interior needs freshen up…
I’ve included a couple photos of
it in its better days… and during
construction so you can see
what’s under the skin.
Not looking for money, just
the satisfaction that it goes to
someone who may take it on as
project, give it a new life (or re-
new its life) - which would be
preferable to it going to a scrap
yard.
