FROM THE PROVINCIAL'S PERSPECTIVE

My Brothers and Sisters in Saint Viator, In the last edition of this newsletter, I spoke about my visit to the Catholic Cemetery

where a great number of my relatives and friends are buried. In my reflection, Ibecame aware of the contradictions that defined their lives. I also became aware thatthose same contradictions were given to me as gifts to treasure. It seemed important tome to recognize that we are all creatures of immense contradiction and mystery. Thefailings of humanity are part of who we are, just as are our triumphs, our sorrows andour joys. Life is filled with paradox.

I have learned over the years that my family and friends are part of who I am. Icannot simply walk away when I am frustrated or disillusioned if they do not measureup to my lofty standards of who I expect them to be. All too often, I find myself com-paring and judging individuals because they are not as perfect as I think they shouldbe. In a cultural context, I am often greatly angered by the corruption that I find in ourlocal and federal governments, in our corporations, and in our Church.

I have come to realize that leaders are chosen for service, not for privilege.Certainly, there is a need to analyze our role as leaders, and to call to accountabilitythose we elect or appoint to serve. And yet, since I cannot simply walk away and leavemy family roots, neither can I simply walk away from my country or my Church. They, too, have contributed to my roots - to who I am, both the good and the bad. Ifind myself often angry at the corruption of money and power that I find in the estab-lished governing and economic structures of our country. The pollution of our air, ourwater, the earth and the human mind is appalling to me. Consumerism runs rampant.People are seen as things - as a means to an end. We feel powerless. We have wit-nessed the corruption of the Gospel message by Church leaders as they grasp to retaincontrol and power, rather than experiencing the freedom that springs from trust in theSpirit of God.

However, I also recognize that both our nation and our Church are comprised ofindividuals, much like you and me. On one hand, all human organizations consist ofpeople filled with mendacity, pettiness, greed, jealousy, arrogance, and great fear. However, organizations are also populated with people of honesty, compassion, empa-thy, courage, generosity and faith. It is when we are afraid to face and deal with thetruth of who we are, that we truly fail. Jesus said time and again, "Do not be afraid".All too often, those whom we choose to lead us are filled with great fear, especially thefear of losing their illusions of power and authority. They are afraid of people and theyare afraid of the Spirit of God. They are afraid of both life and death and so choose tolive with their illusions. As Pogo once said, "I have met the enemy and the enemy isus." Our leaders choose to lead us by the easiest, quickest and most convenient way.We often refuse to accept responsibility for our own lives or our own faith. We some-times prefer to blame others when things do not go the way we think that they should. Therefore, we settle for the least demanding path.

We forget, because of our own fear that the Spirit of God resides in each and everyone of us. We are called in our baptism to become the living body and blood of JesusChrist; God incarnate in the world today. We are called together to accept responsibili-ty for personal and spiritual growth. Through the Spirit, we are called to recognize thatwe are brothers and sisters. God created the world, all of life, including yours andmine, and He saw that "it was good". The Gospel calls us to see all of creation assacred - as sacrament and to treat one another not just with tolerance, but also withrespect. The greatest challenge is to accept personal responsibility. The great tempta-tion that comes through our fear is to simply ignore our personal responsibility toactively participate in God's creation. The season of Pentecost calls us to demonstrateby our very lives, the immersion of God into all of Creation. "There can never be per-sonal conversion without also working for societal transformation" (Pope Paul VI)

“The viatorians charism came to our land, thanks to god” (eXCERPTS OF HOMILIES FROM TWO occasions)

I am happy to recognize the 40thanniversary of Colegio San Viator inBogota. We have been a witness to thegrowth and vitality of an outstandingColego, serving the people of Colombiawell. The Colegio calls its students toexcellence. However, excellence is noteasy to measure. It cannot be measuredby statistics. Colego San Viator existsnot simply for academics and athleticachievements, but more importantly thatthe community of St. Viator be agents oftransforming the world.

We are to be people of the Word thatgives life. The Word does not simplyexist on paper, nor is it simply soundsthat strike the ear. The Word enters intoour souls and brings life to the world thatwe live in. Jesus told his disciples to goout into the world and proclaim the GoodNews - to proclaim that the Kingdom ishere - in this time and place.

Today we see a world torn by violence, hatred, but most of all - fear. We areafraid of others who may think, look andworship differently, who have differentvalues and goals. We are afraid of life, and afraid of death. We hide ourselves inour work; in being busy about manythings without the sense of purpose inlife. Success seems to be measured bywhat we acquire; our possessions, ourtitles, our popularity. We become afraidto contemplate and afraid, therefore, ofchange.

You have within you the salt that flavors- the light that illumines. We are togethercalled to transform the world through ourfaith and by the Way we live. Today werecognize this call by inviting Bro. EdgarSuarez to accept the ministry of Lector. We invite Bro. Edgar to proclaim theGood News in good times and in badtimes, in sickness and in health, in lifeand in death. He is called to proclaimthe Word by a love that gives life to allthat he meets. Jesus stated that the onlymeasure of one's success is found in themeasure of the love that each of us hasfor all of humanity and all of creation.Love is the only way to measure the truesuccess of anyone. True love is most dif-ficult and calls us to follow the difficultroad as Viatorians. We recognize thatbecause of our fear, we look for thesuperficial marks of success because theyseem easiest in the long run - they don'tthreaten my self vision.

I invite your prayers today for Bro. Edgarand for all of us who, in our Baptism, arecalled to proclaim the Word. To heal thewounded and sick and to feed the hungry- to feed them with the Word that giveslife. We recognize and honor those whohave gone before us and who are with ustoday in spirit. We look forward withgreat anticipation to the next 40 years asthis Viatorian community continues tostruggle to be a sign of life to the peopleof Bogata and Colombia. You may beassured of my continued prayers for eachof you always. May God continue tobless you and may you always be opento God's blessings.

Today we celebrate 40 years ofViatorian Presence because we do notknow if we will be alive in 10 years forthe Golden anniversary. We wondered if it would be worth-

while to celebrate this anniversary.Today we agree it is worthwhile. Wewant to share with you our happiness.Today is a day of rejoicing, a day tothank the Lord.

For Viatorians who came, not for a while, but forever. For those who facilitated the plan to come. For those present, who came and served and those at home who promoted the missions. For those who supported us.For the many souls the Lord has put into our hands, in the classrooms, churches, countryside, in the missions.

We share with them what God has givenus.

These have been 40 wonderful years, liv-ing the motto of Fr. Querbes, "LET THECHILDREN COME TO ME". We willcontinue to work with enthusiasm in theformation of Christian communities. Withthe support and prayers of all those whoaccompany us: The Archbishop and theProvincial who had the dream forColombia can sleep calm in their tombs, because today we continue to sow theideal, the Viatorian Charism that came toour land thanks to their zeal. We pray SanViator, our Patron, continues to guide thisboat we all travel in now, Blessed Marycontinues to protect us, we are so anxiousfor peace, Lord Jesus, continue to be the“path, the truth and the life” that we allshould announce and live.

The mission to Colombia began withthe dream of (Cardinal) LuisConcha, Cardinal Archbishop ofBogotá and the Viatorian Provincialof Chicago, Fr. J. W. Stafford, CSV.The dream became reality in 1961when three pioneer missionaries, leaving home, family and comfort, took a risk and climbed into the boatof Colombia. They were Frs. JamesCrilly, Thomas Wise and AdelbertMayer, C.S.V.s.

In 40 years the CSV have been ableto collaborate in many apostolicendeavors. In nearly 50 parishes, parish priests have been able toreceive the help of the Viatorians; intheir rural or urban pastoral work, weekend help and in special times ofLent and Christmas.

There are many faithful who have heard the explanation ofthe Word of God in homilies, chats or in conferences given by the Viatorian religious. There are many children and young people who have cometo know and learn of the styleof Viatorians; as teachers, friends, counselors, and guides. There are many Colombian families who have trusted in the Viatorians for the formation of their children, academically and also as Christians.

"Today we can see that the risk, although big, was worthwhile…theseed has fallen on good earth, because Colombia is goodearth…the Viatorian charism came toour Land, thanks to God."

On September 28, 2001, the Viatorian Community in Colombia gathered at San Basilio Magno Parish,Bogotá, to commemorate 40 years since the Viatorians founded a mission in Colombia. Fr. Pedro E.

Herrera, C.S.V., as the first Viatorian ordained from the Mission, preached the homily...

On April 25, 2002 the Provincial, Fr. Charles G. Bolser, CSV, gave a talk for the celebration of 40 years since the founding of Colegio St. Viator.

Below are some quotable lines….

Change is painful but inevitable. Havingthe courage to enter fully into all that lifebrings enables us to risk achieving thefullness of life. Faith in the presence ofGod in the world is our message. Faithdoes not eliminate pain, frustration orloss. It gives meaning.
