Kolinski, as well asBrother Brendan Gibson, received permission to re-turn to St. John’s from theSeminary, so that theycould assist us duringHoly Week, especially forthe Sacred Triduum. Un-der the expert eye and su-pervision of our perma-nent deacon, Bart Juncer, they carried out the sacredceremonies with graceand perfection.

On Easter Sunday, wewere privileged to havetwo Pontifical Masses.Bishop Thomas Paprockioffered the MissaNormativa and BishopJoseph Perry offered thePontifical TridentineHigh Mass. Assisting thebishops, Deacons Jimand Dennis did doubleduty that day, and Br.Brendan served as sec-ond MC, along withDeacon Bart.

Shortly after Easter,Brother Alexander ac-companied me to Romewhere we visited numer-ous churches. There weremany highlights on thetrip and we met with anumber of notable indi-viduals. As usual when Iam in Rome, I visited theEcclesia Dei office and theOffice for the Congrega-tion of the Clergy.

One of our meetingswas with the Rector of theBasilica of St. Mary Ma-jor, Monsignor MichalJagosz. He is doing re-search on images of ourLady of Czestochowa, which are found outsideof Poland. Therefore, when I showed him pho-

with Cardinal Ratzingerin the German college.Following this Mass, Ipresented him with infor-mation about the Society,as well as a CD of ourEaster High Mass.

Every other morning, Iwas able to offer Mass atSt. Peter’s Basilica. Oneday after Mass, I met Fr.

dain Jim Isaacson andDennis Kolinski to thePriesthood, and BrendanGibson to the Deaconate. The church that eveningwas filled with many oftheir friends, relatives andparishioners.

As usual, sacred musicwas an important partof the ceremonies. TheResurrection Choir andOrchestra rendered theMozart “CoronationMass” and variousmotets. In addition, theSt. Gregory the GreatSchola provided all of theancient chants for theRite of Ordination. Asthe photographs in thisissue show, it was truly asplendid day in the life ofthe Society.

Father Jim Isaacsonoffered his “first” Massthe next day for the Mis-sionaries of Charity, buthis Mass of Thanksgivingwas on Thursday, May20, the Solemnity of theAscension. Father DennisKolinski offered his Massof Thanksgiving the fol-lowing Sunday, May 23.Both of them carried outthe sacred ceremoniesflawlessly, thanks toBrother Scott Haynes, who helped them learnthe intricacies of theritual.

Following on the heelsof these joyful events, wehad the privilege to takepart in another joyful oc-casion—the marriage oftwo of our long-time pa-rishioners, David Carolloand Dorothy Crellin. They were married in ourSt. Anne Chapel in

tos of our church duringthe course of our discus-sion, he was very takenwith our image of OurLady of Czestochowa. Hetold us that it might bepossible to designate St.John Cantius as a pilgrim-age church under the aus-pices of the Basilica of St.Mary Major. We are look-

ing into this possibilityand hope that it will be-come a reality.

Because CardinalGeorge recently ap-pointed me as his liaisonfor Patrons of the VaticanMuseums, one of mymeetings in Rome was atthe Office of the VaticanMuseums. During thismeeting, we discussedsome potential artistic ac-tivities relating to restora-tion of some of the trea-sures in the Vaticanmuseums.

We also had the privi-lege of attending Mass

Carlos Encina Commentzof the Archdiocese ofVaduz, Liechtenstein, who knew of the Societyand its work.

Then, with the ap-proach of May, weawaited the return of ourmen from Holy ApostlesSeminary. When they allarrived, the house was fullonce again and we di-rected all our energies topreparations for the up-coming ordinations.

Finally, on May 18,2004, Francis CardinalGeorge, O.M.I. graced uswith his presence to or-

Lawton Michigan onMay 29th with the spe-cial permission of the lo-cal Ordinary, BishopMurry. Dorothy andDave were the very firstpeople to become Associ-ate Members of the Soci-ety and have consistentlysupported the work ofthe Society in ways toomany to count.

In early June, FathersJim, Dennis, DeaconBrendan and I made aspecial pilgrimage to Po-land in thanksgiving forthe ordinations and themany graces given to theSociety. During the tripwe were able to makemany important “con-nections” with artisansand workshops, whichstill cultivate many of thesacred arts.

Usually, a visit to Po-land ends with a visit toCzestochowa. Instead,we began our visit underthe protection of OurLady by a visit to Hershrine. Father DennisKolinski offered the Sun-day Latin Mass at the al-tar of Our Lady of

Czestochowa and to thedelight of all present gavea brief homily in Polish.

We were fortunate tobe in Poland for the feastof Corpus Christi, whichthey still celebrate on thetraditional day—theThursday following HolyTrinity Sunday. We con-celebrated the CorpusChristi Mass withFranciszek CardinalMacharski at his cathe-

dral in Krakow and thenjoined in the processionwith the Most BlessedSacrament, which fol-lowed the Mass. In addi-tion to the multitude oflay people, there werehundreds of ReligiousSisters, Brothers andPriests in the procession.Cardinal Macharski, whois 77 years old, carriedthe Blessed Sacramentalone through the cobble-stone streets in a proces-sion, which lasted a solidthree hours.

But this splendid daywas only the beginning ofmany more processions.Poles also observe the oc-tave of Corpus Christiand parishes all over thecountry have Eucharisticprocessions each day dur-ing the octave.

One afternoon duringour pilgrimage, we wereable to visit the monas-tery of the Camoldese

Monks situated on ahigh hill outside of thecity of Krakow. Its largechurch, a splendid ex-ample of baroque archi-tecture with impressiveside altars, can be seenfor miles. Male visitorsare permitted to enter themonastic grounds threetimes a year but womenare strictly forbidden tostep foot inside the outergates. These monks liveby a Rule that is as strict,if not more so, than theCarthusian monks. Theylive a strictly cloisteredlife in individual hermit-ages on the monasterygrounds and the onlyperson that we were ableto see was a novice, whogranted us permissionto see the monasterychurch.

The very last day ofour pilgrimage endedwith many graces. FatherRegis Barwig, one of the

Society’s spiritual advi-sors, kindly arranged forus to have Mass at a beau-tiful Benedictine Conventin Warsaw—the Benedic-tine Nuns of PerpetualAdoration of the MostBlessed Sacrament. Weoffered the Missa Nor-mativa and the Sisterssang so beautifully frombehind the grill that one

1000 people, who fled tothe church for safety, were killed under tons ofbrick and stone duringthe bombing of the city. Two sisters, who sur-vived, rebuilt the entirecomplex over manyyears—a true testamentto their faith.

Returning to Chicago,we then made prepara-tions for our own CorpusChristi observance onSunday, June 13th. Theweather cooperated—itwas clear and not too hotor humid—and it was apleasure having ournewly ordained priestsand deacon assist in thesolemn procession.

This summer, BrothersKeith and Chad attendedspecial classes in theologyduring a special instituteconducted by the Insti-tute on Religious Life.

Brother Chad contin-ues to work with theHoly Innocents Choir, de-veloping the children’smusical talents. This fall,he will be taking classesin music at RooseveltUniversity.

On August 15th, Fa-thers Jim Isaacson, Den-nis Kolinski, Al Tremariand Deacon BrendanGibson will receive thespecial rochet, mozzettaand 4-cornered biretta.Perpetually professedmembers of the Societywill now use these out-ward reminders of the li-turgical dress of CanonsRegular whenever theypray the Divine Office.

Brothers Keith Mannaand Chad McCoy will re-new vows, and BrothersRobert Maresh, AnthonyRice and AlexanderSchimpf will profess firstvows. As members of theSociety, who are not yetperpetually professed, they will receive only themozzetta.

Brothers Joshua Cas-well and Scott Hayneswill begin their secondyear of Novitiate, andnow, as summer slipsaway, they will be joinedby two new men, whomwe have just acceptedinto the formation pro-gram, Brendan Bartlettand Brian Schafer.

As we go to press withthis issue of the Via Sacra, Iask for your prayers. May itopen for you a “sacredway” to follow our Resto-ration of the Sacred.

The Honor of the Priesthoodpletely subordinated to Christ, takesthe place of Christ in the Churchthrough time until Christ comesagain in glory at the end of theworld.

The first work of the priest is tooffer the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass,to hear confessions and to preachthe Gospel. As St. Cyprian expressesit: “The priest takes the place ofChrist as he reproduces that, whichChrist did before him.” . . . . We are, indeed, duty bound to help our fel-low man, but the first duty in doingso for a priest is to offer the HolySacrifice. . . .

The priesthood is a precious giftof God to the Church. Without thegift of the priesthood we would nothave the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass;we would not be able to receive ourBlessed Lord in Holy Communion;we could not have our sins forgivenin the Sacrament of Penance, andmany, many other blessing and gifts.

Indeed, the priest is elevatedabove the angels; for to no angel hasbeen given the power, in personaChristi, to transubstantiate in per-sona Christi the bread and wine intothe Body and Blood of Christ. To noangel is given the power to forgivesins in the name of Christ. This iswhy the devil envies and hatespriests so virulently; he has not beengiven such powers by God. And justas the dignity of the priesthood is soeminent, so his fall from grace is allthe greater. We can say that the fallof a priest is a worse cataclysm thatthe fall of Satan himself, who “felllike lightening from heaven.” (cf.Luke 10:18) This is why we mustpray for priests. The devil hates andtries to destroy priests and thepriesthood. He glories when he suc-ceeds in bringing about the fall of apriest. We must pray for our priests. We must pray for our priests thatGod will give them the grace to

overcome the wiles of the devil andto be holy and faithful servants oftheir Lord.

The Blessed Mother of God,Mary most holy, is our spiritualmother, the mother of each and ev-ery member of the Mystical Body ofChrist. But she is in a very specialway the Mother of priests. How ar-dently she cares for, watches over, prays for these alter Christi, for shesees them identified with her be-loved Son. She is our all-powerfuladvocate. But, also what sorrowstrikes her Immaculate Heart whenshe sees a priest be unfaithful to hisvocation.

The Blessed Abbot Columbapowerfully and beautifully ex-presses her motherly care for priests.Speaking to priests, he says: “Whenwe cast ourselves at the feet of OurLady, we can say to her: ‘I am apriest … turn towards me your mer-ciful countenance’. Mary sees in us,not only a member of the MysticalBody of her Son, but a minister ofJesus, who shares in His priesthood. She sees her divine Son in us andcannot reject us; it would be to re-ject Jesus Himself. The priest canrepeat with even more confidencethan the simple Christian, thosebeautiful words: ‘It is a thing un-heard of that anyone, who had re-course to thy protection and im-plored thy assistance was leftforsaken.’”

Pray, then, to Mary for ournewly ordained. Pray to her for allpriests. Pray to her that by her inter-cession she may obtain for theChurch zealous and holy priests, who will guide, sanctify and com-fort the suffering laity in the condi-tions in the Church today.

From a sermon delivered byFr. James Downey, O.S.B. on 20 May 2004

at St. John Cantius Church at the FirstSolemn Mass of Fr. James Isaacson, S.S.J.C.

However great a dignity God hasgiven to man, He gives an evengreater dignity to those, whom Hecalls to the priesthood. The BlessedAbbot Columba Marmion, O.S.B.says, “No one may presume on hisown authority to assume the dignityof the priesthood. He must be calledto it by God like Aaron, … becauseno one has the right to raise himselfto so eminent a state … the priest …must be chosen by the Almighty.”

Why, we may ask, is the dignityof the priesthood so sublime? Thereason is that the priest by the sac-rament of Holy Orders is assimi-lated to the priesthood of ChristJesus Himself and is given the awe-some power to offer the Holy Sacri-fice of the Mass, in which he, inpersona Christi, “in the person ofChrist,” changes the bread and wineinto the Body and Blood of Christ. He also receives in this sacramentthe power to exercise the mercy ofGod Himself by forgiving the sins ofthe truly penitent in the sacramentof Penance or Confession. TheBlessed Abbot Columba gives beau-tiful expression to this dignity andpower when he writes: “and yet, what super human power there is inthese fragile hands! (of the all toohuman hands of the priest). In thisman of ordinary appearance thereresides a power, which is truly di-vine. He speaks, and Christ de-scends on the altar to be immolated. The penitent, overwhelmed with theweight of his faults, kneels beforehim and, in the name of God, thepriest says: “Go in peace,” This sin-ner, who a minute ago would per-haps have been condemned to eter-nal punishment, rises pardoned, justified, with his soul illuminatedwith heavenly grace.” St. Catherineof Sienna says: “The priest is theminister of the Blood of Christ.”Thus, the priest, although he is com-

WHERE ARE ALLOUR MEN GOING?At a time when there aren’t

enough priests to adequately staffall of our Catholic parishes, it is in-deed unusual that St. John CantiusParish has so many resident priests. Therefore, with the recent ordina-tions to the Society of St. JohnCantius, many people have beenasking if the new priests will be leav-ing and where they will be stationed.

Many Catholics are not aware ofthe distinction between priests thatare ordained for a diocese andthose, who are ordained within areligious order. Diocesan priestsserve diocesan parishes and are as-signed to one of the parishes in theirdiocese. In contrast, priests in reli-gious orders are ordained for theservice of their respective order. They are assigned not by the localbishop to one of the local diocesanparishes, but by the superior of theorder to one of the parishes admin-istered by that order.

Because the Society of St. JohnCantius presently administers onlyone parish, the answer to the ques-tion “Where will you be stationednow after ordination?” is verysimple. Here at St. John Cantius Par-ish! Because it is the Society’s onlyparish, it is the only place we cannow go.

However, there are plans to sendthe Society to another parish in thearchdiocese. It will then have a sec-ond parish to call its own. At thattime, some of its members will beassigned there and others will re-main at St. John Cantius Parish. Asthe Society of St. John Cantius con-tinues to grow, it will then be as-signed to still more new parisheswhere its members will carry on thevery special work that began sixyears ago at St. John CantiusChurch.

St. Thérèse’sPrayer for Priests

O Holy Father, may thetorrents of love flowing fromthe sacred wounds of ThyDivine Son bring forth priestslike unto the beloved discipleJohn who stood at the foot ofthe Cross; priests: who as apledge of Thine own mosttender love will lovingly giveThy Divine Son to the souls ofmen.

May Thy priests be faithfulguardians of Thy Church, asJohn was of Mary, whom hereceived into his house. Taughtby this loving Mother whosuffered so much on Calvary, may they display a mother’scare and thoughtfulnesstowards Thy children. May theyteach souls to enter into closeunion with Thee through Marywho, as the Gate of Heaven, isspecially the guardian of thetreasures of Thy Divine Heart.

Give us priests who are onfire, and who are true childrenof Mary, priests who will giveJesus to souls with the sametenderness and care with whichMary carried the Little Child ofBethlehem.

Mother of sorrows and oflove, out of compassion for Thybeloved Son, open in our heartsdeep wells of love, so that wemay console Him and give Hima generation of priests formedin thy school and having all thetender thoughtfulness of thineown spotless love.

St. Thérèse’s devotion to the Priesthoodis to be found in all its fullness

in a prayer which she used to say dailyand which she learned by heart;

this is all the more remarkable in viewof her known distaste for

lengthy set forms of prayer.
