April/May 2015 GREETINGS FROM THE POST COMMANDER Brad Denny Well we made it through the winter and finally have some warm sunshine to liſt our spirits. It seems as though a lot of the members have been somewhat agitated as of late. I’m not sure if it has been because of a long winter or that there is an outbreak of general grumpiness going around. I choose to think that no maer what the reason, this warm weather will give us new focus. Look for the good In people not the bad! We have shown that together we are great force in this community. We need to stand together in all things. Without solidarity, we stand alone or in small groups which accomplish nothing. This is not who or what we are. I want to once again thank the 75th anniversary commiee despite the 6 inches of snow that hit that aſternoon and evening and the band being a no show the event was enjoyed by all that aended. My hats off to all of you for making it happen. The many photos that were taken that night have been on display in the club room, if you would like copies of any of them please contact Barb Bickmore or Debbie Denny. As I prepare for my exit, there are just a few things for us to remember; we will be preparing for our first buddy poppy drive in May, please consider giving up a few hours to distribute poppies. Contact John George for more details on locaons and to sign-up. Pass the word to your family members and friends and let the public know about our hall rentals, ladies nights, and weekly entertainment. I know we are a “private” clubroom but these ”guests” are essenal to the financial aspect of our post. The installaon of post and auxiliary officers will take place the evening of Saturday May 30 th . There will be more details to come in the near future. Please make every effort to aend. Whomever is elected to these various posions will have been done so by your choice. Help to start their year off right by showing them support from the very start. It has been my honor to serve all of you this past year and I thank you for your support.

GREETINGS FROM THE POST COMMANDER

Brad Denny

Well we made it through the winter and finally have some warm sunshine to lift our

spirits. It seems as though a lot of the members have been somewhat agitated as of late.

I’m not sure if it has been because of a long winter or that there is an outbreak of general

grumpiness going around. I choose to think that no matter what the reason, this warm

weather will give us new focus. Look for the good In people not the bad! We have shown

that together we are great force in this community. We need to stand together in all

things. Without solidarity, we stand alone or in small groups which accomplish nothing. This is not who

or what we are.

I want to once again thank the 75th anniversary committee despite the 6 inches of snow that hit that

afternoon and evening and the band being a no show the event was enjoyed by all that attended. My

hats off to all of you for making it happen. The many photos that were taken that night have been on

display in the club room, if you would like copies of any of them please contact Barb Bickmore or

Debbie Denny.

As I prepare for my exit, there are just a few things for us to remember; we will be preparing for our

first buddy poppy drive in May, please consider giving up a few hours to distribute poppies. Contact

John George for more details on locations and to sign-up.

Pass the word to your family members and friends and let the public know about our hall rentals, ladies

nights, and weekly entertainment. I know we are a “private” clubroom but these ”guests” are essential

to the financial aspect of our post.

The installation of post and auxiliary officers will take place the evening of Saturday May 30th. There

will be more details to come in the near future. Please make every effort to attend. Whomever is

elected to these various positions will have been done so by your choice. Help to start their year off

right by showing them support from the very start.

It has been my honor to serve all of you this past year and I thank you for your support.

A MESSAGE FROM THE AUXILIARIES

Ladies Auxiliary President - Janet Lorenz

Ladies, we are coming to the end of another Auxiliary year. As we reflect on the past months, we can be proud of our accomplishments. We have done much to serve the needs of veterans and their families. Thank you to those ladies who accepted positions as officers and committee chairmen during the past year. You have done a great job. Nominations and election of officers will be held in our April meeting. I am certain that we will have another successful year ahead.

Our Sweetheart Steak Night on Valentine’s Day was a big success. Thank you to all who participated by attending the dinner and thanks, too, to those who volunteered to help prepare the food. A special thank you to Past Commander, Jim Lorenz, for grilling eighty delicious steaks! The Flea Market held on March 7th was well attended. Barb Bickmore and Susan Kibbee did a great job organizing the event. Thank you to Becky Menning who cooked a delicious breakfast for those who attended. Kudos to those committee members who planned the 75th Anniversary celebration. I am sure all who attended will agree that it was a spectacular event marred only by the snow storm! The District Meeting will be held on May 17th in Cedar Hill at 1 pm. The State Convention will be held on June 5th & 6th in Springfield. Make plans now to attend these important events.

Men’s Auxiliary President - Keith Hoffman

I want to thank those members who have participated in the wing nights at the post this past year. I truly appreciate you giving up your time to help out. Our elections will take place at the monthly meeting on Monday April 20th please make it a point to attend to elect the officers for the coming year.

Newsletter Editor - Debbie Denny

I wanted to thank all of you for your cards, phone calls and thoughts & prayers as I recover from my knee surgery, I appreciate it very much.

Seam Squirrel - Tony DeBello

Well it is time for my reign of confusing and bewilderment as the Cooties Seam Squirrel to come to an end. Gee, I expected one or two Yeas, but not the entire post..ha LMIAO The reigns have been turned over to Dennis Ecker, so we are leaving the Cooties in real good hands; If only his mind was that good. Wow, I am quacking myself up. haha This past year I have informed you of the Cooties, their start, their success and their future. I would like to leave with words of wisdom. And no I didn't think of them myself! I borrowed them and here they are:

Life is better when you are happy But life is best when other people are happy because of you!!! Kindness is the language the blind can see and the deaf can hear! Before you talk, Listen. It may change how you respond. Before you react, Think. It may change how you do react. Before you judge, Wait. It may change your views. Before you quit, Try. It may be the best thing you do. Cherish your life, Cherish your health, Cherish your family and Cherish your friends. For these are the things that money can't buy and will define your True Wealth. It is now I understand that it's not what I have in my life, but WHO I have in my life that really matters. Well as I ride into the sunset, I wish you all the best and may God bless you and keep you safe.

Cootie Auxiliary President - Pam Ecker

Congratulations to the newly elected officers! And, thank you for your support over the last year and for your confidence in allowing me to serve a second term.

As we prepared our final reports for the year, it became evident that we had a busy and productive year providing service to our hospitalized veterans. Here are a few highlights:

As of March 2015, we have delivered over 3,000 craft kits valued at nearly $71,000 to 25 facilities and 6 Pup Tents & Auxiliaries.

We provided volunteers and a BBQ for the local Golden Age Games, hosted monthly bingos at Jefferson Barracks, and provided a monthly pizza night for the residents at the Fisher House. We partnered with the Eastern Division to host a BBQ & Bingo for residents at the State Veterans Homes (SVH) in St. Louis, St. James, Mexico, and Cape Girardeau.

We provided our adopted veterans at the St. James SVH with gift cards and greeting cards, donated $2,500 in cash to the Jefferson Barracks therapeutic arts and crafts program, and donated $1,500 in cash to four SVH's activity funds.

Auxiliary members contributed their time in the kitchen on the third Friday of each month at the VFW "Cootie Night" Bingo, actively recruited new members to achieve over 100% before December 31, and donated $150 and assembled blankets for the National Home Children's Christmas Party.

To raise funds, we partnered with our Pup Tent to host a "Mouse Races" and a "Trivia Night", sold Valentine candy and scarves, and conducted basket raffles.

On February 12 we provided backstage snacks for the "stars" of the local VA's Creative Arts Festival. Thank you to Sheila Eyre and Georgetta Rodgers for their selection and preparation of a great spread!

The Grand Convention will be held at the Truman Hotel in Jefferson City on April 10-12 where our own Di-ana Ahearn will end her term as Grand President.
