VETERANSCLUB

TheShawneeCommunityCollegeVeteransClubisanorganizationthatprovidesmemberswithmeaningfulinteractionandactivitieswithotherveteranswhohavesimilarpastexperiencesandcurrentlifesituations,duetopriorserviceinthemilitary.

AllveteranstudentsenrolledatShawneeCommunityCollegeareautomaticallyconsideredmembersoftheclub.

However,activeparticipationisencouraged.ThereareseveralbenefitsforcollegeveteranstoactivelyparticipateandattendSCCVeterans’Clubmeetings:

1. Workshops,suchasinformationonthenewG.I.Bill,andguestspeakers,gearedtowardhelpingcollegeveteranstransitionintothecollegeenvironmentmoresmoothly.

2. Helpingveteranstudentsregainacollectivesenseofcamaraderieand“family”throughtheclubmeetingdiscussionsandthevariousclubactivities.

3. Theopportunityforveteranstudentstosharetheirveteranandcurrentlifeexperienceswithotherveterans.

4. Givingbacktotheircommunitybyparticipatinginvariousclubactivities.5. Gainingleadershipexperiencebyorganizingfundraisingactivities.6. Theopportunitytohelpcurrentlyservingtroopsbyorganizingactivitiesthatpromoteand

StudentswhoattendSCCareexpectedtomaintaingoodacademicstanding.Pleasereview

pages23‐24inthe2009‐2011SCCCatalog.AllSatisfactoryAcademicProgress(SAP)rules

PARENTSCHOOLLETTERS

Youcanbeconcurrentlyenrolledintwoschoolsandstillreceiveyourbenefits.

Theschoolyouarereceivingyourdegreefromisyourparentschool;theotherschoolisyour

secondaryschool.

AParentSchoolLetter(PSL),orForm22‐315,letsthesecondaryschoolknowthatyour

class(es)areapprovedforyourprogramofstudyatyourparentschool.

YouneedaPSLifyouaretakingSCCclasses,butSCCisnotyourparentschool.ThePSLcomes

fromyourparentschool.

YouneedaPSLifyouaretakingclasseselsewhere,butSCCisyourparentschool.ThePSL

comesfromSCC.

TorequestaPSL,youwillneedtoturninacopyoftheclass(es)descriptionfromthecurrent

catalogofthesecondaryschoolandacopyofyourcurrentclassschedule(withcharges)tothe

VeteransServicesOfficeoftheparentschool.

ACADEMICADVISING

Itisrecommendedthatyouspeaktoanacademicadvisoreachsemestertoensureallofyour

classescounttowardyourdegree.

Lettheadvisorknowthatyouareaveteran,oradependentofaveteran,andarereceiving

VeteranEducationbenefits.

Anadvisorcananswerquestionsyouhaveregardingspecificclasses,programsofstudy,and

academicstanding.

Youshouldmeetwithanadvisoreverysemestertohaveanewdegreeauditpreparedandto

enrollinthefollowingsemester.

BREAKPAY

Breakpayispayforthebreakbetweentwosemestersandisbasedontheenrollmentstatusof

theprevioussemester.Toreceivebreakpay:

o Thebreakmustbelessthan56days,or

o Thebreakcannotbelongerthanthetermsbeforeorafterthebreak.

o Youmustbeenrolledinatleast½‐timeduringthesemesterspriortoandfollowing

thebreak.

Youcannothavewithdrawnfromallofyourclassesthetermpriortothebreak.

Ifyouchangeschools,youmustmaintainthesameprogramofstudy.

REMEDIALCOURSES

Remedialcoursesareclassesthatyoumusttestintotoqualifyforpayment.Theseclassesarenon‐

degreecredit.Ifaremedialcourseappearsonyourdegreeaudit,itispayable.Examplesofremedial

coursesareENG041,ENG042,ENG043,ENG044,MAT041,MAT042,andMAT046.

ONLINE/TELECOURSES

OnlineCourses

o Thesecoursesaredonecompletelyonline.Anyclassofferedonlineispayableifitis

requiredonyourdegreeaudit(unlessyouarereceivingChapter33benefitsand

onlytakedistancelearningcourses).

o Telecoursesarehybridcourses.Mostofthecourseworkisdonethroughtelevised

orvideotapedlectures,thoughafewclassesmayrequiresomeattendance.Ifaclass

electiveareas).Afterward,thecreditissuedandthecreditsneededareaddeduptoseeifthere

areanyelectivecreditsrequired.

Electivecoursesmustbequalifyingcoursesandareonlypayableifthereisroomindicatedon

yourdegreeaudit.

TheVeteransServicesOfficeisrequiredtoreportthelastdayastudentattendedwhendropped

fromclass(es).Itisthestudent’sresponsibilitytoreportallchangesinyourscheduletothe

VeteransServicesOffice.

MILITARYWITHDRAWALS

Amilitarywithdrawal(MW)isissuedwhenaveteranstudentiscalledtoactiveduty.Inorder

toreceivethe“MW”youneedto:

o BringacopyoftheofficialorderswithyournameonittotheVeteransServices

OfficeorAdmissionsandRecords.

o Dropyourclasses.

Oncethisisdone,yourorderswillbeevaluatedandprocessedbyAdmissions&Records.

Thisprogrampayseligibletuitionandallowablefees.BenefitsarelimitedtouseonlyatIllinois

publiccollegesorcommunitycolleges.Qualifiedapplicantsmayusethisgrantatthe

undergraduateorgraduatelevelfortheequivalentoffouracademicyearsoffull‐timeenrollment,

whichismeasuredineligibilityunits.IVGProgrameligibilityunitsarebasedontheenrolledhours

foraparticularterm,notthedollaramountofthebenefitspaid.Chargesfornoncreditcoursesthat

meetthedefinitionoftuitionandmandatoryfeesmaybecoveredbyIVGbenefits.Eligibilityunits

usedforanoncreditcoursearethesameasthoseassessedforacreditcoursehavingthesame

numberoffacultycontacthours.ContacttheFinancialAidOfficetodeterminetheamountofthe

eligibletuitionandmandatoryfeesthatwillbecoveredbythisgrant.
