EMPLOYOYEES RECOGNIZED FOR20 YEARS OF SERVICE

LEGION SPONSORS ANNUAL CHRISTMAS GIFT SHOP

Debbie Pingel Dennis Kern

The annual Christmas Gift Shop is something our Veterans look forward to every year. This event, sponsored by the American Legion Auxiliary Department of Missouri, and supported by area Legion Posts, gives our Veterans an opportunity to shop (at no cost to them) for a gift for a loved one at Christmas. This is particularly important for those Veterans who are no longer able to go shopping. Barb Yallaly spearheads this effort every year, with much assistance from local Legion Auxiliary members.

Once every year all employees who have reached a milestone in their employment are recognized for their years of service. Pictured above are two employees who have been serving our Veterans for over 20 years. See Page 7 for others who were recognized. This event is sponsored by our Veterans Home Foundation.

American Legion Auxiliary Members from Cape and Jackson gather for instructions prior to opening the gift shop. On the far right is Dennis Woeltje, State Commander, who stopped by to lend a hand.

After a long, cold winter, Veterans enjoy sitting outside on a warm day watching a local group of girls scouts clean the courtyard and plant flowers in preparation for spring.

John Yallaly, also known as Doc to his friends, is a familiar face around our Missouri Veterans Home. He also has a long history of volunteering in the community as well as with the local American Legion. During 2014 his years of service were recognized during the American Legion Department of Missouri Annual Convention, when he was named Distinguished Legionnaire of the Year.

John, an Army veteran, served in the Korean Conflict. In 1968, he became an active member of Louis K. Juden

Post 63, Cape Girardeau, serving as Post Commander from 1983 to 1985. John was manager of the Post baseball team from 1956 to 1996, teaching, coaching and motivating hundreds of youth, leading a team to a state championship in 1973 and another in 1994. Today, Yallaly continues to serve as the Post 63 baseball chair and team general manager.

Yallaly’s devotion to the Veterans living here at the Veterans Home is evidenced by the many programs he participates in to make the lives of these Veterans more enjoyable and purposeful. He has accumulated over 2600 volunteer hours at the home, with many untold volunteer hours not recorded. Congratulations on receiving a well-deserved aware!

VOLUNTEER HOME REPRESENTATIVES

John Yallaly Named Distinguished Legionnaire of the Year

Barb Yallaly honored for 25 Years as Legion Auxiliary Veterans Home Representative

As the official ALA Home Representative, Barbara Yallaly has spearheaded volunteer efforts of the American Legion Auxiliary at the Veterans Home since it first opened in 1990. She was recently recognized by the Department for her years of continued service to the home.

Under her leadership, area Auxiliaries sponsor several activities including monthly bingo, monthly birthday party, Jack Pot, and a Super Bowl Party. They also

sponsor Cheer Baskets, providing Veterans a choice of personal items and hygiene products. Over the years they have purchased numerous items for the home to include the first bingo machine, feeding tables, Wii games, yard glider, 4th of July fireworks, televisions and two pianos. Add to that the Christmas Gift Shop, which is highlighted elsewhere in this newsletter. The list of accomplishments and support is limited only by space. Congratulations on a job well done -- both you and John are a blessing to our Veterans!

No need to be a golf pro for this one! Heck, even if you’ve never played golf in your life, there’s no doubt you’ll have a great time at the Kow Pasture Klassic! What is the Kow Pasture Klassic, you ask? Only the most unique game of “golf” you’ll probably ever play in your life -- where the “t’s: are beer cans, the “golf balls” are actually tennis balls, and your golf “club” can be ... well, whatever you want it to be! That’s right, use a hockey stick, a bat, a mannequin leg, a tennis racquet, a shovel, a boat oar, a pool stick, or even a plain ole’ golf club (if you want to be boring!) - it’s your choice; just bring it and your own tennis balls! You’ll play on one of the best 9-hole courses around. Teams of four are forming now, so don’t wait!

Activities & Celebrations

The Activity Department at our Veterans Home does a great job of providing a variety of activities for our Veterans to choose from. These snapshots show just a few of the special events which have taken place over the past few months. (1) The singing group, Re-Creation, provided a broadway-style musical entertainment with songs from the past, ending in a patriotic tribute. (2) Veteran Bill Billmeyer, with the assistance of a volunteer, planted flowers and made a beautiful fall display in front of the home. Bill also oversees the planting of spring flowers and roses which help beautify our landscape. (3) Veterans Del Wright and Jim Sadler chat with Caleb Craft, who stopped by to give his annual “birthday” donation. This is Caleb’s 6th year to request donations for the home rather than ask for birthday gifts. (4) The Scott City Honor Choir performing with a little help from Veteran Kenny Gerringer (5) Veterans and guests dance during our St. Patrick’s Day Party, sponsored by RSVP/VIC.

To the staff of the Missouri Veter-ans Home, especially those on “A” wing,Thank you so much for the won-derful care you have given my fa-ther, Walter Calvin Owen, over the last few years. I can’t tell you how much I appreciate your kind-ness toward him. It has helped me greatly to know he has been in your hands. Sincerely,

Kim Barclay (daughter)

-----------------------------------------

B Wing Staff - I can’t adequately express my grati-tude for the loving care my dad (Charles Arbaugh) received during his final days on B Wing. He was treated with dignity and respect, which was comforting to me.I also really appreciate the concern shown to me for my well-being during my stay.Your compassion for your residents is obvious in the way you perform your daily duties. THANK YOU! God Bless!

Sue Alberts----------------------------------------

Jim has been here a year today and I just want to say thanks for all you do. It’s been hard at times and still is. But we have a lot to be thankful for and so blessed to have caring people like all of you. God Bless you all,

Diane Bright

To all the staff on A Wing,We just want to say a real big Thank You for the love and care you gave to our brother and brother-in-law (Milford Combs). You are all very special people to care for Vets like Milford day after day. Your kind-ness you gave to us was just great. And the send off that you honor him with was just so beautiful and touched our hearts. May God richly bless you. You are all special in our hearts. Love in Christ,

The Milford Combs family--------------------------------------

To the wonderful staff on A Wing:You all have been like a family to us for over two and a half years. We want to make sure you know how much we appreciate every-thing you did for our beloved dad, grandfather, husband, uncle and brother, Herb. You looked after his personal needs, fed him, clapped and laughed with him, soothed and hugged him, always letting him know that you loved him. We are forever touched by the kindness and care you have shown; we are surely blessed to have had you all in his life, as was he.

The Herbert Rellergert Family

----------------------------------------Thank you for the wonderful care you gave to Delbert Bishop and I. Thank you for the guest room and special attention you honored us with. May God grant you all peace and love. Thank you again,

Margorie Bishop and family

Administration & Staff:The Holiday meal was delicious. I can’t imagine the work and the planning involved in an event like that. But you did it splendidly. My father, family and I had a won-derful evening as did everyone I talked to. Again, thanks so much.Mira Tucker (Marvin Hansen’s dtr)---------------------------------------

Our sincerest thank you for giving so much of yourselves and provid-ing the excellent care and attention our precious husband and father, Mitchel Threlkeld, needed during his stay at the VA care facility in Cape Girardeau, Missouri. We will always remember your dedication, your wisdom, your compassion and Grace. Mitch knew he was in good hands and so did we. For all of this we are so very grateful.

Betty, Jan, & the Threlkeld family

-----------------------------------------

Dear Staff,Thank you to all who cared for and befriended Harold Gabauer during his stay. It is difficult job to care for our fighting young who have become old and to do so with dig-nity and compassion. All of us who loved “Poppy” are grateful.Sincerely,

Nancy & Allan Bornstein

-----------------------------------------

Thank you for everything you did for our dad and also for us!

The Ben Martin Family

I attended the Thanksgiving/Christmas dinner at the VA Home last evening as a guest of my broth-er Paul. The dinner was great and the fellowship refreshing. Thank you, your staff, employees and vol-unteers who made this event pos-sible. I visit your facility regularly and am always impressed at the many services and kindnesses pro-vide the Veterans and their fami-lies. Continue to enjoy the Christ-mas Season and be thankful for all the blessings given to us by our Lord. Sincerely,

Terry Rollins

--------------------------------------

To the Veterans Home Staff on A Wing,Thanks to all that worked with my husband, Bill Reid. I met some very nice and efficient men and women on A wing. As I visited Bill almost daily, I always watched them as they went from one patient to an-other to assist each one do what-ever he needed done if it was only a pat on the back, a cheery chat, or a hug. I was blessed each day that I visited. Thanks to everybody who helped with the Holiday Dinner on De-cember 5th. The food was really good and I know a lot of work was done in preparing for this event. My family really enjoyed it. I ap-preciate all that was done for Bill. He was the light of my life for 64 years. A thankful spouse,

Frieda Reid
