    Wallan Secondary College VET/SBA Program

Introduction The VET/SBAT Courses in this handbook have been chosen because of their relevant career pathways and cost effectiveness. If adequate enrolments are not received, programs will not run.

About School Based Apprenticeships and Traineeships (SBAT) School Based Apprenticeships and Traineeships (SBAT) are available to secondary school

students over 15 years old who are enrolled in the Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) or the Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL) Years 11 and 12.

An SBAT offers students the option of combining part-time employment, school and training. The program is undertaken via a training contract with an employer and has a Training Plan signed by the school. This formally registered with the Victorian Registration and Qualifications Authority (VRQA) and leads to a nationally recognized qualification. School endorsement of the Training Plan will indicate that it is undertaking responsibility to enroll the student on Victorian Assessment Software System (VASS), so that credit for the training within the VCE or VCAL can be awarded to the student.

Like other VETiS offerings, the vocational training components of SBAT also contribute credit towards a senior secondary certificate. Many school based apprentices and trainees move on to a full-time contract with their employer after leaving school, while others choose to continue their education and training at a Registered Training Organisation, TAFE or university.

In 2020 Wallan Secondary College will be working with E Focus, VFA Learning and Integrity Business College to assist students to become involved in school based apprenticeships and traineeships. SBAT students will need to identify employers who are interested in signing them up as SBAT.

What is a VET (Vocational Education and Training) Program? A VET program refers to Vocational education and Training (VET) courses undertaken as part of a students’ school studies. VET is comprised of nationally recognised certificates undertaken by students that can contribute towards their completion of the Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) or the Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL). VET is designed to expand opportunities and pathways for senior secondary students and improve educational outcomes to increase the number of young people completing Year 12 or equivalent.

Upon successful completion of a VET course, students are awarded a nationally accredited certificate which translates directly into further education and training at TAFE.

Approximately 18% of senior students (Year 10, 11 and 12) at Wallan Secondary College in 2019 are enrolled in a VET/SBAT course.

Who are VET/SBAT Courses for? Students who are completing Year 10 are eligible for Internal VET courses only. Those in year 10, 11 and 12 must meet the selection criteria of the College’s VET/SBAT guidelines. The VET/SBAT course will run for one full school day each week.

Only Students completing Years 11 and 12 can undertake external VET Courses and SBATs. All Intermediate and Senior VCAL (Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning) students MUST be enrolled in a VET course as part of their learning program. Year 11 and 12 VCE Students and Parents should be aware that undertaking VET/SBAT will involve missing VCE classes and generally an increase in workload. A high level of commitment and excellent time management is required.

How does VET/SBAT contribute to the VCE and VCAL Certificates?

    - All VCE/VET/SBAT programs provide credit towards VCE.

    - Most VCE/VET/SBAT programs credit at Units 1 – 4, However, some programs provide credit at Units 1 and 2 levels only.

    - There are VET programs that also have a study score available which can contribute to the students’ ATAR Score.

VET/SBAT contributes to VCAL through satisfying the requirements of the industry Specific Skills or Work Related Skills strands. Each completed 90-hour block of VET equals one VCAL unit.

Conditions of Participation 1. ENROLMENT: Students are only permitted to enrol in one VET/SBAT course per year.

    2. PAYMENT: Full payment of VET fees is required prior to the commencement of the course in 2020. SBAT costs are the responsibility of the student’s family.

    3. WITHDRAWAL /REFUNDS: Students can withdraw from a VET course within the first two weeks and receive a full refund. Students who withdraw after this period will not receive a refund.

    4. PRESENTATION / BEHAVIOUR: Students are expected to abide by rules and regulations of the TAFE, Registered Training Office or the school they are attending for their course. They are expected to dress in accordance with the institution’s policy. Students are expected to take responsibility in line with all current workplace practices and legislation for their own learning and behavior. Students not conforming to these requirements will be formally warned and if the problem is not rectified then their enrolment may be terminated. 5. All other students are responsible for making their own transport arrangements to and from their chosen SBAT/VET course.
