CUTTING LAYOUTS ARE ON THE PATTERNSHEET

PREPARING PATTERN PIECESChoose your size according to the Burdameasurement chart on the pattern sheet: dresses,blouses, jackets and coats according to your bustmeasurement, pants and skirts according to your hipmeasurement. Adjust the pattern pieces, if necessary,by adding or subtracting the number of inches thatyour measurements differ from the measurementsgiven in the Burda chart.

ABCut out the following pattern pieces in the requiredsize from the pattern sheet:

for the DRESS view A pieces 1 to 11,for the DRESS view B pieces 1 to 7 and 12 to 14.

LENGTHENING OR SHORTENING PATTERNPIECESOur pattern is calculated for a height of 5 feet, 6 inches(168 cm). If you are taller or shorter, you may adjustthe pattern to fit your size at the lines marked "lengthenor shorten here"._Make sure that you adjust all pieces of one model bythesame amount at the same lines.How to lengthen and shorten pattern pieces:

Cut pattern pieces along marked lines.To lengthen, slide the two halves of the pattern pieceas far apart as necessary.To shorten, overlap the two halves of the pattern pieceas far as necessary.Even out side edges.

CUTTING OUTFOLD (– – – – – –) means: here is the center of apattern piece, but in no case a cut edge or a seam. Thepiece should be cut double, with the fold line formingthe center line.Pattern pieces that are outlined with a broken line in thecutting diagrams are to be placed face down on thefabric.The cutting diagrams on the pattern sheet show howthe pattern pieces should be placed on the fabric.

ABFor a single layer of fabric, the pattern pieces are pinnedto the right side. For double layers of fabric, the rightsides are facing and the pattern pieces are pinned to thewrong side.The pattern pieces that are shown in the cutting diagramextending over the fold of the fabric should be cut lastfrom a single layer of fabric.

Please note:Cut pieces 1 and 2 on bias grain.

SEAM AND HEM ALLOWANCES are included onpatternpieces: 5⁄8" (1.5 cm) for hem and at all other seams andedges.Use BURDA carbon paper to transfer all patternlines andmarkings to the wrong side of the fabric pieces accordingto package instructions.

LININGUse pieces 5 to 9 to cut lining for view A.Use pieces 3 to 7 and 14 to cut lining for view B._ See cutting diagrams on pattern sheet.Seam and hem allowances are included on patternpieces: 5⁄8" (1.5 cm) at all seams and edges.

INTERFACINGCut interfacing as illustrated and iron on the wrong sideof thefabric pieces.

SEWINGWhen sewing, right sides of fabric should be facing.Transfer all pattern lines to the right side of the fabricpieces with basting thread.Tips on working with delicate fabrics:Use a fine needle and thread for transferring pattern linesto the right side of the fabric pieces and for all otherbasting.Do not use heavy basting thread. Also use a fine sewingmachine needle (size 60 or 70) with a sharp tip.Neaten seam allowances if possible by zigzag stitchingapprox. 1⁄4" (0.7 cm) next to seam on both allowances.Trim excess allowance close to stitching and pressallowances to one side.

AB DRESS / BodiceImportant: For optimal results, the gathered pieces needto be taut. Pieces 1 and 2 are therefore cut on bias grainand somewhat smaller than the lining pieces onto whichthey will be sewn.

Front Panel Seams / Lining1.) Lay interfaced side front pieces rightsides together with interfaced center front.Baste panel seams (seam number 1) andstitch. Trim allowances, clip curves and pressopen.

Gather Front and Back Pieces2.) Gather front piece at center front and atside edges. Gather back pieces at side edgesand at back edges. To gather, stitch twoclosely spaced lines of machine basting(longeststitch setting). Pull bobbin threads to gatherto match edges of respective lining pieces(edges with same seam number). Knot endsof thread. Distribute gathering evenly.

Illustration 2 shows front, 2a shows back.

3.) Lay front piece on front lining piece withwrong side facing right side. Baste all edgestogether. Stitch center front and side edgestogether between lines of gathering.

AB4.) Lay back pieces on interfaced back liningpieces with wrong side facing right side.Baste edges together, matching same seamnumbers. Stitch back edges and side edgestogether between lines of gathering.

Side Seams5.) Lay back pieces right sides together withfront piece. Baste side seams (seam number2) and stitch.

6.) If possible, pin the bodice snugly on adress form to prevent the gathered folds fromsagging. Pin folds between center front andback and sew in place with small invisiblehand stitches.

B StrapsGather straps (piece 13) at the ends as describedand illustrated in step 2. Pull bobbin threads togather straps to width of strap piece 14. Knot endsof thread. Distribute gatheringevenly.

7.) Lay gathered straps right sides together withstrap lining pieces. Baste lengthwise edgestogether and stitch. Trim seam allowances, turnstraps. Baste and stitch ends of straps together,distributing gathering evenly.

8.) Baste straps on upper edge of bodice betweenmarkings in back and from the panel seams infront with right sides facing (seam number 7).

AB Line BodiceStitch front panel seams of non-interfaced liningpieces as described and illustrated in step 1. Trimallowances and press open.

Side SeamsLay non-interfaced back lining pieces right sidestogether with non-interfaced front lining piece.Stitch side seams (seam number 2)._Press allowances onto back and stitch 1⁄2" (1.2cm) wide to make casings for the boning stays.

9.) Pin lining right sides together with bodice,matching side seams. Baste upper edges togetherand stitch, catching in straps for view B. Clip incenter front close to line of stitching(arrow). Lay lining up, press allowances ontolining. Topstitch close to seam, catchingallowances (9a). Lay lining down, baste edges andpress.

SKIRTCenter Back Seam / Slit10.) Lay back skirt panels right sides together.Baste center seam. Stitch seam from slit mark(arrow) to lower edges. Leave slit basted.Neaten allowances and press open. Undo bastingat slit.

Side SeamsLay front skirt panel right sides together with backskirt panel. Baste side seams (seam number 4) andstitch. Trim allowances, neaten together and pressonto back.

Skirt LiningStitch center back seam and side seams (seamnumber A 5, B 4) in the same manner as on skirtof top fabric.

A11.) Gather lower edge of skirt, e.g. stitch twoclosely spaced lines of machine basting. Pullbobbin threads to gather to fit lower edge ofskirt lining. Knot ends of threads. Distributegathering evenly.

12.) Pin lower edge of skirt right sides togetherwith lower edge of lining, matching side seams.Stitch.

13.) Neaten allowances together and press ontoskirt lining. Topstitch lower edge of skirt lining3⁄8" (1 cm) wide for elastic casing, catchingseam allowances and leaving a small openingto insert elastic. Use a safety pin as a bodkin toinsert elastic.

Finished width: 371⁄2" - 391⁄2" - 411⁄2" - 431⁄2"- 451⁄4" - 471⁄4" -491⁄4" (95 – 100 – 105 – 110– 115 – 120 - 125 cm). Sew ends of elastictogether.

ABA: Gather upper edge of skirt to fit edge of skirtlining as described and illustrated in step 11.14.) Place skirt lining inside skirt with wrongsides facing, baste upper edges together. Clipskirt of top fabric at end of slit close to laststitch (arrow). Turn allowances at edges of slitin lining to inside. Baste allowances together(14a).

B Tab (Center Front)15.) Fold tab piece lengthwise, right side facingin. Stitch long edges together 5⁄8" (1.5 cm)wide. Trim allowances. Turn tab and fold sothat the seam lies along the center.Baste open end of tab on lower edge of frontwith wrong side facing right side (15a). Do notcatch lining.

AB Stitch Bodice16.) Baste bodice right sides together with skirt(seam number 6), matching side seams. Stitch,do not catch lining of bodice.Clip bodice in center front close to line ofstitching (arrow 16a). Trim allowances andpress onto bodice.

17.) B: Turn tab over upper edge of dress toinside, turn in and sew to lining.

(Invisible) Zipper18.) Lay lining of bodice up. Open zipper and pin facedown on the seam allowance of one edge of opening.Begin at top of seam. The zipper teeth must lie exactly onthe marked edge of the opening. Use a special foot forinvisible zippers to stitch very close to the teeth of thezipper. Stitch zipper onto other edge of opening likewise(18a). Stitch both edges from the top to beginning ofcenter back seam (arrow). The teeth of an invisible zipperroll inward and but the special presser foot will hold themflat for stitching. For best results, use a zipper a bit longerthan the opening.

A: Cut RIGILENE boning tape into two pieces each 41⁄2"(11 cm) long.19.) Insert boning into casings at side seams of lining.Turn in edge of lining on bodice and sew to zipper bandsby hand (19a) and along skirt joining seam, clippinglining in center front.

B Hem / Lining Hem20.) Press allowance to inside, topstitch fold edge withclose zigzag stitching. Trim surplus allowance close tostitching.TIP: Test stitch on a scrap of fabric first to check stitchsetting and thread tension. Use machine embroiderythread.
