“Even in the darkest days of the year....there is Riverlight”

“My installation with 34 site-oriented paintings is the product of an alertness towards attitudinal shifts during my month long residency at StudioRCA. The process of painting became an undercover activity questioning the social, political, educational and physical structures in the context of the Riverlight development. The work shows an ambiguous mix of antagonistic, joyous, observational, self-caring, agonistic, emotional and intellectual puns, wordplay and deliberate spelling mistakes.” Vesta Kroese 2016 Vesta Kroese is the first invited RCA alumni to undertake an Artist’s residency at Riverlight. Vesta Kroese is an artist that has studied Sculpture at the Royal College of Art London and Architecture at the Technical University of Eindhoven, The Netherlands. Her work includes interventions in public space, exhibitions and workshops, focusing on the lived experiences of the individual in art and architecture. StudioRCA is a window onto creative thinking, dialogue, exchange, questioning and discovery. StudioRCA is a site of production as well as a place for the display of artworks by invited artists, recent alumni and current students of the Royal College of Art. The vitrine-like properties of StudioRCA allow a public audience to view new artworks as they are being produced. Through this particular type of spectatorship, we hope to provide experimental ways through which to encounter and understand art in process. StudioRCA is committed to engaging with a range of publics, including those at the centre of this residential development. StudioRCA is a project initiated by Kate Davis, Director of StudioRCA and Senior Tutor in Sculpture at the Royal College of Art, and delivered with support from St James Group and Futurecity.
