Epiphany The revelation (Theophany) of God incarnate as Jesus Christ. In Western Christianity, the feast commemorates principally (but not solely) the visit of the Magi to the Christ Child, and thus Jesus' physical manifestation to the Gentiles.

In many Central and Eastern European countries, families celebrate Epiphany by inscribing the

letters CMB above their doors with a cross (+) between each letter. This is done every year on

January 6th, Epiphany. Epiphany commemorates the arrival of the Magi. Many people ascribe the

letters to represent the initial of the names of the Magi: Caspar, Melchior and Balthasar (according to

legend). The letters actually represent the Latin phrase "Christus Mansionem Benedicat,' which

means "May Christ bless this home”.

The inscription is left there until it is worn off or replaced the following year at Epiphany. This

expresses our belief that the Lord remains with His people throughout the year.

At Mass today, chalk will be blessed that we can use to bless our homes.

Traditionally the blessing is done by either a priest or the father of the family. This blessing can be performed simply by just

writing the inscription and offering a short prayer:

Lord, as we begin a new year in this home, we ask your protection and seek your guidance as we welcome others into our

hearts and our homes. May our visitors always find the presence of Jesus in this dwelling and within us. Please bless our

home and all who enter it. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen

EPIPHANY CHALK BLESSING

Over the inside of your front door (on the lintel, if possible) use the blessed chalk and write the initials of the Three Wise Men (CMB) with crosses (+) between— as well as before and after each letter. Then write the year, breaking up the numbers and the year so that they fall on both sides of the initials. It should look like this:

“20“ is the millennium and century, the “C” stands for Caspar, the “M” for Melchior, the “B for Balthasar, and the “21” is the decade and year.

JOSEPH OF NAZARETH: THE STORY OF THE MAN CLOSEST TO CHRIST

The first feature film ever on the story of St. Joseph, who was

a carpenter, the husband of Mary, and the foster father of

Jesus Christ. Scripture tells us that St. Joseph was a ""just

man"" and that God gave him the most daunting task ever

asked of a man–to be the husband of the woman who would

give birth to the Messiah and the father and protector of this

Holy Family. He would be the man closest to Christ.

Starring Tobias Moretti in a manly, appealing performance, we

are shown the human, noble, and deeply spiritual aspects of

Joseph the carpenter, son of David,

servant of God, and loving husband

of Mary. He is presented as a man of

faith who must grapple greatly with

the profound mysteries of the

miraculous conception, the Virgin

Birth, the Incarnation of the Son of God, and the incredible

challenges of protecting and raising Jesus amidst the threats

on his life from the moment of his birth and beyond.

As Joseph is informed by God's messengers about trusting

and following his plan for Christ, the dangerous flight into

Egypt to save his child, and finally returning to Nazareth to

raise Jesus, this lovely film presents beautiful vignettes of

these and other powerful scenes in the life of the young Christ

and the Holy Family that are authentic and inspiring.

What is the difference between a chastisement and a punishment?

The distinction between chastisement and punishment is, in many ways, a subtle one, but which is still relevant in our Catholic tradition. First, chastisement is a concept that is grounded in Sacred Scripture. Here, we see chastisement as a response by God to people’s actions that is intended to teach a lesson. As St. John Paul II observed, “chastisement appears to be … a kind of divine pedagogy, in which the last word is reserved to mercy: He scourges and then shows mercy, casts down to the depths of the nether world, and he brings up from the great abyss” (Tobit 13:2). The idea here is that in order to capture our attention or to highlight how we have not lived out our covenant-relationship with God as we should, there are times when God uses events in life to draw us back to the quality of relationship or faith that we should have. The concept of punishment, however, has a different sense. The Catechism of the Church observes that punishment is the consequence of a damaging action that “has the primary aim of redressing the disorder” and to protect the community and the common good from further damage or harm (see no. 2266). Although we always hope that someone who is being punished for a crime or some other harmful action will learn from their actions, punishment isn’t necessarily intended to teach a lesson in the same way that a chastisement is.

Ultimately, how we make the distinction between chastisement

and punishment is a matter of discernment. As with almost

everything in life, our experiences can be an opportunity for

grace, or for something less— depending on how open we are

to recognizing the movement of God’s Spirit within us.

The proceeds from these masks helps offset the additional costs associated with the work of evangelization and keeping our church open and safe during this pandemic.

Today the Church celebrates the Solemnity of the Epiphany. "The Lord and ruler is coming; kingship is his, and government and power." With these words the Church proclaims that today's feast brings to a perfect fulfillment all the purposes of Advent. Epiphany, therefore, marks the liturgical zenith of the Advent-Christmas season. — Pius ParschThe Solemnity of the Epiphany is celebrated either on January 6 or, according to the decision of the episcopal conference, on the Sunday between January 2 and January 8. The young Messiah is revealed as the Light of the Nations. Three mysteries are encompassed in this solemnity: the Adoration of the Christ Child by the Magi, the Baptism of Christ and the Wedding Feast at Cana. Extra candles and/or lamps may be placed around the sanctuary and in other parts of the church to honor Christ revealed as the Light of the Gentiles. It is customary to replace the images of the shepherds at the crib with the three Magi and their gifts. The feast of the Epiphany, which was kept in the East and in certain Western Churches before being observed in Rome, seems to have been originally a Feast of the Nativity; January 6,

for those churches where it was kept, was the equivalent of Christmas (December 25) in the Roman Church. The feast was introduced at Rome in the second half of the sixth century and became the complement and, so to say, the crown of the Christmas festival. Epiphany means manifestation. What the Church celebrates today is the manifestation of our Lord to the whole world. After being made known to the shepherds of Bethlehem, He is revealed to the Magi who have come from the East to adore Him. Christian tradition sees the Magi the first fruits of the Gentiles; they lead in their wake all the peoples of the earth, and thus the Epiphany is an affirmation of Salvation that will be offered for all humanity.
