January 14-15, 2017 / 14-15 de enero, 2017Second Sunday in Ordinary Time

Dear parishioners,The first weeks of the New Year often provoke thoughts about Time. The past is evaluated and future plans are made. Many persons fol-low the custom of a New Year resolution. As we begin 2017 with the long month of January, which has five weekends and 31 days, I want to share with you a poem about Time. This poem expresses how the passing of time is in our hands as well as outside our control. May we see clearly that Time is a gift from God to us and may we use it wisely for our salvation.

Time ticks by and memories are made. The young wait eagerly for time to pass,And the older pray for time delayed,That they might stop the hourglass.

Time moves too swiftly, but then againIt moves too slowly, it would seem,When we are faced with grief and painOr harboring a broken dream.

Time makes flowers bud and bloom,Changing seasons as it goesTo rob the trees of colorful leaves,Consuming all in their repose.

Time is measured by the sun,Making magic in the sky.We cannot capture any dayNo matter how we may try.

The love we’ve shared with othersAnd accomplishments we’ve madeAre the moments and the memoriesthat time will never fade.

Your pastor,Father David.

Dear parishioners,The project of the installation of new carpet in our parish church will soon take place. Since October 30, 2015 when a severe rain caused flooding in the church and damaged the carpet, a plan has developed to address the drainage issues and to replace the carpet.

The rainwater, which flows down the large area of the roof of the church, causes an accumulation of an extensive amount of water on the ground which either drains away from the building or flows back inside the church as happened in 2015. When the church was built in 2001, gutters and downspouts were not installed on the build-ing. The original plan was for the rainwater to drain away from the church. To resolve this problem, a dedicated team, of parishioner volunteers has been working to dig out a drainage channel, which is then fitted with a perforated plastic pipe, then covered over with gravel. This process is intended to carry the rainwater along the side of the church and away into drainage culverts and areas. This project will take more time to complete, since it is all done by hand.

Meanwhile, the installation of the new carpet is scheduled to begin on Monday, January 23. A sample of the new carpet is in the display case in the narthex of the church. The church architect was consulted to recommend the new carpet, which was approved by the Building Committee. Please note that the original carpet color is no longer available. We have the assurance of the architect consultants that the color will blend favorably with the colors of the church building. The new carpet will be paid entirely from a property insurance settlement.

It seems appropriate to add an additional project of refinish-ing the wood of the Crucifix in the sanctuary. The wood will be restored and refinished to match the pulpit. This project will begin on Monday, January 16. Scaffolding will be required and several work days to complete this project before the new carpet is installed on January 23. Additionally, three new chairs have been ordered for the sanctuary. This includes a presider’s chair for the priest and two matching chairs for the deacons. The three chairs currently in use will be refinished and placed in the Chapel.

This project in all of its aspects will certainly present a new look inside the church. Sixteen years have passed since the church building was completed. These improvements will make our Santa Cruz an even more beautiful place to worship God.

Please pray for the success of this project…O most compassionate Jesus. You alone are our salvation, our

life and our resurrection. We present to you this intention. By the agony of your Sacred Heart and by the sorrows of your Immaculate Mother, grant this request to your servants whom you have redeemed by your Precious Blood!

Your pastor,Father David.
