THE MOTORCYCLE JACKETTurn heads with this classic wardrobe staple…

Since the 1920’s, motorcycle jackets have been sported by the avid gear head to the swooning silver screen gentleman such as Marlon Brandon and James Dean. Evolving from a piece of clothing that was once only for the opposite sex, the motorcycle jacket has become THE wardrobe staple for every fashionista to own. From runway shows to various celebrities, the classic leather jacket has been popping up everywhere. There are many ways to wear this look—you can sweeten it up with a flower print skirt or dress or add a funkier twist by incorporating patterns and loud colors. In buttery leather or soft suede, there really is a jacket for everyone.

“My style is very eclectic because I usually dress to suit my mood. One day a week I want to be all rock and roll, another day it’s girlie and hippie or boho.”

Do you have one fail safe outfit? Probably leather leggings, a Topshop jumper or tee of some sort and an Alexander Wang leather jacket. Topshop is the best, I don’t know how I’d live without it. Most of my clothes are from there. Where else do you shop?I love Mango, I always seem to find something in there. Oasis I like a lot and Zara although I prefer H&M, especially the designer collaborations. I wanted every piece of the Matthew Williamson collection. I loved the Stella one too, I queued up for it!

What do you feel most confident in? I do like short things, I like getting my legs out, although I’d much rather wear something a bit kookier and dramatic than something tight and revealing. I get quite self conscious when I dress up, I’d much rather wear something wacky or something tight around the top and then big on the bottom like a short prom dress. Or on a normal day I love nothing more than being in a pair of baggy jeans and a pair of converse. What do you do to feel more confident? I’m always late for things and always feel like I’m rushing. If I have something that evening and I’m feeling nervous about it I always think Poppy, just give yourself time. Go home, open

up a bottle of wine, have a glass, put your favorite music on, do your makeup slowly and put your outfit on. Feel really ready for it. Who are your style icons? I absolutely love Gene Shrimpton, everything was so effortless, she made everything look so easy and chic. Nowadays I love Diane Kruger, she’s not scared to put on something a little bit different. I like Agyness Deyn, she’s like a chameleon. She makes everything look incredible. ¤ - Courtesy of Cosmo Team

POPY DELEVIGNE

Get the Look: •  Mix up strong pieces with feminine ones: pair up a leather jacket and sequined dress for a more laid back look •  Accessorize! Don’t be afraid to jazz outfit with more jewelry and bold nail polish

•  Don’t overdo the makeup. For a fresh face like Poppy, stick to a tinted moisturizer and light bronzer paired with some gloss or a bright red lipstick.

"It would be ridiculous for me to say I am unlucky, but, like any other family and any other girl, I've had my ups and downs."

STYLING TipsVertigo has put together trendy styling tips for this season which will be sure to get you noticed – the RIGHT way…

Tip 1: Transition a flower print sundress by adding a pair of rock n’ roll boots or a cool off the shoulder sweater Tip 2: Wear a bright neon top with something darker, such as a charcoal colored pair of skinny jeans or skirt. Pair it up with some metallic shoes for an intriguing look: Tip 3: Make something, like a bodycon skirt, appropriate for daytime by pairing it up with a cool pair of sneakers. This works great with certain dresses too.

Tip 4: When already wearing a statement outfit, go easy on the jewelry. If the neck line is high, skip the necklace and opt for a nice set of earrings and a great cuff. If there is a lot going on, such as strong shoulders, go for a big, statement cocktail ring. This ALWAYS works.

12

Page 13: Vertigo Magazine: Vol. 1

Tip 5: Transition your jean cutoffs with black accents, such as pantyhose, a sheer blouse and ankle boots.

Tip 6: Tired of feeling too girly? Opt for a motorcycle jacket, which you can pair with a flower print romper or sequined dress for an edgier look.

Tip 7: Tuck in the front of your blouse or t-shirt instead of all the way in or all out. This gives your silhouette a whole different look and looks a lot cleaner.

Tip 8: If you are wearing a strong piece, go softer on the rest of the outfit. For example, leopard pants should be paired with either a black cashmere sweater or a big, knitted cream pullover

It was this man that revolutionized

music as well as fashion. In the Spring of 1993, Marc Jacobs unveiled his grunge inspired runway show in which he stated: “That was a time when I did love music…maybe it was Nirvana that brought me back.” Even after his untimely death, Nirvana lead singer, Kurt Cobain, has been the inspiration for designers and the fashion forward alike. Whether he liked it or not, he become a spokesperson for Generation X. His carefree attitude, dirty clothes, stringy hair and

unforgettable raspy voice still captures everyone's hearts today – you still think of him every time you throw on a pair of beat up Chucks or a plaid shirt. Cobain remains as one of music history ’s biggest fashion icon - even though we all know, that it was of course, not done on purpose. Comeback: the legendary’ Hi How Are You’ shirt popularized by Kurt Cobain, who sported it at the 1992 MTV awards. This t-shirt featured the artwork from the sixth self-released music cassette album by singer-songwriter Daniel Johnston. ¤

PAMELA LOVE

Page 16: Vertigo Magazine: Vol. 1

Jewelry designer Pamela Love

isn't one to follow the crowd, which is why we've always loved her. Unlike last season's steam-punk jewelry presentation, Pamela decided to something a little more daring for this NYFW show—opening up a pop-up tattoo shop to get her designs permanently inked on your skin. She and her husband, illustrator Matthew Jameson Nelson Love, created custom flash-sheets from which people can choose their designs. The tattoos were then applied by artists Minka Sicklinger and Patrick “Fish” King to members

of the fashion industry who are willing to go the extra mile in between Lincoln Center shows. So, why did she opt for something so permanent instead of her usual presentation? "Tattoos and jewelry are very similar, they are both decorative adornments for the body that often have deep meaning to the individual," Pamela said in a press release. "Jewelry is very personal, it is something that you can wear every day and after a while the pieces you wear most feel like they’ve become a part of you. Getting a tattoo is a logical extension of that idea. It ’s something you can carry with you forever."

Page 17: Vertigo Magazine: Vol. 1

What would the title of your auto-biography be?Hard question- I’m only half kidding with these: Small Girl / Big World / Medium Fries or The Story of Pamela Love: Jewels Rule You Drool What can’t you travel without and why? A good book, headphones, and a giant coat that doubles as a blanket. Where is your favorite travel destination?Anywhere new. I love traveling and seeing different cultures, so it ’s hard to choose a favorite. Though I’ve always been partial to the Southwest- New Mexico and Arizona play a huge part as inspiration for my collections. And I’m currently planning a trip to Morocco for the spring. Who and what has inspired you lately and why?The culture and craftsmanship of Berber tribes in Morocco, and Northern African architecture. Who inspires you?My husband, Matthew Jamison Nelson. He's an amazing illustrator and artist. Who is the last person you called? My friend Joey, my former sales director. What do you collect?Vintage jewelry, antique jewelry — actually, both. . Do you have a ring you never take off?I never take off my wedding ring or my arrowhead ring. I even wear them in the shower. ¤ - Courtesy of Grandlife

FAVORITE RESTAURANT – Mooncake FoodsFor takeout/delivery at the studio, I always order from Mooncake and Gobo. I love their vegan-friendly options- they still somehow taste like old-fashioned comfort food. FAVORITE BAR – Enid’sTwo of my favorite bars around my neighborhood are Enid’s and Daddy's. Both have a fun but relaxed vibe that’s good for hanging out with friends in Brooklyn. FAVORITE STORE - Fox & FawnI love buying vintage, so I spend a good amount of time scouring Brooklyn’s flea markets and rummaging through cool little curated vintage shops like Fox and Fawn or The Grand St. Bakery. FAVORTIE MUSEUM – American Museum of Natural History I love the Natural History Museum and the Neue Galerie. I try to keep up with visiting exhibits at both whenever I have some free time. MUST DO NYC RECOMMENDATION – Dead Horse BayDead Horse Bay in Brooklyn. You gotta go scavenge.

Why we love Pamela:-  Her style: From bohemian chic to rock n’ roll (a pop up

tattoo parlor – how more rad can you get?) Pamela’s effortless style is always cool. A fashion inspiration? Of course, hands down.

-  Her jewelry: We’ve watched her creations blow up over the years and still can’t get enough. Her signature pieces tend to include natural elements like eagle claws and bird craniums. She is also inspired by religious imagery, Alejandro Jodorowsky, Neil Young and traditional South American and African jewelry. Plus, everything is handmade in New York.

-  She just came out with a collaboration with Nine West – and the boots are more than promising. The leather booties come with metal detailing on the heal and toe. To die for.

-  She is a real artist and collector of all things beautiful; fossils, crystals, afterlife iconography, and scientific and medical imagery (her father was a surgeon)

an eye onTHE CROWD

Our favorite girls

Today, some of our biggest fashion

influences come from the streets, especially when we spot a perfectly put together silhouette that catches our eye. As we see a stylish female, we watch - and then, very carefully, analyze the outfit, the shoes, the accessories, and of course, the bag… Inspiration to coordinate our own wardrobe doesn’t stop at flipping through the glossy pages of Vogue anymore, but rather comes from the many girls, mostly models, we see during Fashion Week or those sitting at the local café, sipping on a freshly brewed coffee. In this issue, Vertigo has put together all our favorite fashionistas from the streets along with some of their coolest looks. So go ahead, analyze and get ready to steal some of their style…

Lorena Azizeh is the perfect

mélange between fashion and art. From Bolivian and Palestinian decent, Azizeh started creating unique and beautiful pieces in 2005 that naturally encompass her multi-cultural upbringing. Now living in Hawaii, Azizeh continues to pursue her love of accessories and openly shares her passion for creating gorgeous pieces with Vertigo… 24

“Azizeh. Art. Fashion. Jewelry.

What started as a beading hobby for 5 year old me has become a dream made reality. Rare, enthralling and raw one of a kind jewelry. Azizeh is inspired by individuality. I think it is essential to be yourself and embrace it. Azizeh is designed for fashion forward daring women who are confident, unique and not afraid to show it wearing extravagant pieces. The modern bohemian. Azizeh started in 2005 when I decided to start creating jewelry for myself which was extremely different and everything I always wanted and I was sure no one else would have it. Immediately people started noticing my intricate designs and complimenting them and literally begging to buy them off of me. At that point I realized I was onto something and began selling my one-of-a-kind pieces.

I am inspired by nature and use semi precious stones, minerals and gems with healing powers and metaphysical properties. I believe in the power of energy healing and therefore incorporate those beliefs in my designs. One of my favorite stones is Agate, which is known for giving the wearer strength, harmony, and protection. Another favorite is Pyrite known for promoting creativity, psychic development, optimism and channeling abilities. Living on Maui has further developed these inspirations of nature. The contrasts of sun, sand and sea. The vast array of saturated colors. The power of nature and energy is in each and every piece of Azizeh.” ¤ Prices upon request http://www.azizeh.com

Bjørg Nordli-Mathisen grew up in the north of

Norway and began making one-of-a-kind jewelry whilst living in India in 2004. With a background from the arts, she has upheld a nomadic lifestyle, always drifting towards new corners of the world in search of inspiration. Bjørg releases two collections per year. The Classic collection has its foundation in silver, diamonds and precious stones whilst the Odyssey collection represents new directions through its foundation in bronze. All materials are 100 % natural and obtained in accordance to environmental preservation. There is a conceptual approach to all of her designs that encapsulates both previous and present collections as balancing acts between the fine and the raw. Whether the specific inspiration comes from surrealism, Charles Darwin experiments or ancient myths, there is always a link through an industrial approach to conveying nature in a piece of jewelry. ¤ http://www.bjorgjewellery.com/

Danish menswear brand, Aleksandr Manamis,

created a collection based on controlled effortlessness. Layering gives the impression of elegant simplicity, whereas hidden details in the form of pleating and drapery confronted the barer aesthetic. Hidden draping mixed with an array of bespoke fits, which highlight the versatility of the separates and technicality of the designs. Aleksandr Manamis characteristically creates looks in a dark palette of grey and black. Manamis’ oeuvre signature looks included immaculate detailing in the form of cut, including abstract blazers with one-button fastening and slash necked jersey with enclosed sleeves. This exquisite craftsmanship aids Aleksandr Manamis’ reputation as the king of cut and the simple silhouette. ¤ http://www.aleksandrmanamis.com 27

Love Adorned – a lifestyle concept store from New York Adorned’s Lori Leven – expands beyond fine jewelry to include smart tools for home, body and travel. The shop’s lovingly curated inventory addresses the shift away from ‘throw away culture’ with lasting solutions that bring ease and preserve beauty in our busy lives. For where strength exists in design and simplicity, it also is expressed through craftsmanship and quality; all key elements in the shop’s offerings. Building on seasonal themes, the store opened December 2010 with an initial exploration of things cherished and celebrated, collected both from years of searching and growing fascinations.. Love Adorned hopes to be a place that brings all things beautiful and inspiring, informative and innovative, to light. ¤ 269 Elizabeth Street New York, NY 10012 http://www.loveadorned.com

BEHIND the scenes

She  is not your typical French girl. Her striking blue eyes, almost-not-there

eyebrows and bleached blond hair make you look twice when crossing her path in the streets of Paris – you cannot help but to notice her.

Growing up with a rock n’ roll mother and an artistic father, Margaux, a fashion blogger, photographer and filmmaker who resides in Paris, has always pushed boundaries. Her parents are part Danish, Swiss, Czech, and French, and she spent almost as much of her childhood in Paris as she did in Morocco. She

considers herself very European but doesn’t fit the cookie cutter mold of typical French girls. She loves leather, cigarettes, oversized men’s t-shirts, tattoos, filming

the streets of Paris and of course, Serge Gainsbourg.

With a new capsule collection out and endless projects on her hands, Margaux is truly unstoppable. Vertigo had the chance to catch up with the European

fashion muse and get a glimpse into her everyday Parisian life…

Interview by Raihana 30

What is your beauty routine?I do not really have a beauty ritual. I take care of my skin by moisturizing it and I don’t wear any makeup. I hydrate my body every day, alternating between Kielh’s ”Crème de Corps” and Nivea. I also try to be very careful with my hair and use Frédérique Fekkai and Kielh’s shampoos. I run about an hour, 2 to 3 times a week ... well I try anyway! What is your personal style?I have a fairly casual style. I pretty much only wear black, gray, and white.. In my opinion, what matters most is attitude, charisma. Nothing’s better than a white or black oversized tee with a pair of skinny jeans and boots! What is the most expensive thing you've bought? My Acne boots and my leather Et Vous jacket Who are your fashion icons?Kate Moss (of course…). Otherwise I am inspired by Serge Gainsbourg, Jim Jarmusch, and Basquiat. What is your daily schedule?I get up around 9am, I go get my coffee at Au Progres, which is literally right downstaires from my apartment. I check my emails. I have regular lunches for work. I'm also work on my clothing collection. At 9 o’clock I turn everything off; my computer, my phone. Either I go to dinner with my friends, or I download a movie and buy myself enough food to make myself a great dinner. But I'm an insomniac so I sleep very late. I love working at night. I don’t really need a lot of sleep. What is your guilty pleasure ?Pasta! (she laughs) with every different kind of sauce imaginable!

31

Page 32: Vertigo Magazine: Vol. 1

Where would we most likely to find you?At Café Charlot or at Le Progrès. They are both in the Marais. What are your musical influences?Very 80’s:, I love the Twin Shadows and Kindness. Otherwise I love C2C, Serge Gainsbourg, The Kills, Jupiter, Fleetwood Mac, Prince, Jay Z, Sun Glitters, Nicolas Jaar, Shlohmo. There are so many - I am very passionate about music. How many tattoos do you have? What is your favorite and what is it mean?Eighteen. I don’t talk about my tattoos (she smiles). They are a secret!

You launched a capsule collection recently, can you tell us a little about it?I really tried to create what I wanted but could not find. For example, men’s t-shirts with THE perfect fit. What are your favorite brands?Alexander Wang, Olivier Theyskens, Isabel Marant, Surface to Air, and American Apparel Finally: Paris or Los Angeles?Paris! But both cities are so different. Can I choose both? (she laughs)

Fashion veterans are so captivated by this rich, wine color that

they’re calling burgundy the “new black.” The most-watched designers sent burgundy designs en masse down the fall runway. For those of you who adore deeper shades such as black, navy, or

gunpowder,, burgundy is a great color to introduce to your fall wardrobe. It looks fabulous on most complexions and blends effortlessly into your style scheme. Not to mention, burgundy pairs

seamlessly with your typical fall colors including deep blues, oranges, and caramels. Burgundy, also referred to as the “bordeaux” shade, will be a style focal point for fall collections.

Ear cuffs got a lot of play this Fashion Week than they have in the last two

decades. Designers of all styles and stripes have presented their take on an ear accouterment previously considered more ‘punk rock’. First Jason Wu’s models rocked some delicate, ladylike numbers designed by Caroline Ventura (of BRVTVS). Then Katie Gallagher (a very young, very talented designer immediately embraced by the likes of Lady Gaga) incorporated massive cuffs reminiscent of bleached-out coral into her neo-gothic collection. Tuesday, Rodarte took it to the next level, decking the girls out in serpentine silver cuffs that coiled around the ear like medieval armor. Just out of curiosity, I checked out eBay for some selections so I could take this trend for test drive. -Courtesy of Jenny Bahn

Shield rings are a hot commodity this season and have been for quite

sometime. There was a time in history when these rings were appropriately called "finger armor." But set them in gold, encrust them with diamonds, and photograph them on Hollywood's most wanted such as Heidi Klum, The Olson Twins, Rhianna, and Kate Moss, and you've got sweet trend on your…knuckles. That is, unless you're like the rest of us who can't afford a $23,000 knuckle duster. So, what's a girl to do? Check out our pocketbook friendly options below – that is, unless you can go treat yourself to a gorgeous Rodkin…

Nothing is more visible than skin that has been well rested and well taken care of. Today, sugary foods, fast foods, smoking,

alcohol, a lack of exercise and overall bad hygiene can take a huge toll on your skin leaving you with less than radiant features.

styles were a big trend on this season’s runway and nothing beats a perfectly sleek hair style. "Fifty percent of this look is choosing the right shampoo and conditioner," says celebrity stylist Danilo. Try Réne Furterer ’s Karité Shampoo, $23, and Intense Nourishing Mask, $46 or Nourishing Cream, $28 If your hair tends to be flyaway, use frizz-reducing products, such as Paul Mitchell’s Super Skinny Serum, $23 or a balm. A great balm for straight hair is PHYTO Phytodefrisant Botanical Hair Relaxing Balm, $26. It contains extracts of ferula, horseradish, sage, and plant mucilage to help strengthen hair, tame frizz, and add shine. Its natural formula won’t weigh hair down or make it waxy.

Stylist tips: •  Pick the right size straightening iron; The length

and thickness of your hair should determine the size of your iron

•  Use a flat iron only on the ends or your hair – this will help your hair from falling flat

•  Use only a drop or so of serum, too much can make hair look slimy

•  Do not apply serum to roots, as this will make your hair oilier a lot fast. Stick to your ends, where there is more damage 63

GET A SUPER STRAIGHT LOOK Follow these steps to get a super straight, polished look

Step 1: Start by clipping your blow dried hair into manageable sections -- the thicker your hair, the more sections you should create. Starting on the bottom half of your head, near the nape of your neck, grab a half-an-inch to two-inch section of hair. Step 2: Starting half-an-inch down from your roots (this will help your hair maintain some volume), quickly smooth the iron down the hair shaft “making sure to move at a steady pace," advises hairstylist expert Moticka.

Continue this until you have straightened the bottom and mid-sections of your head. Step 3: For the final sections near the crown of your head, lift hair off your scalp and get the iron as close to your roots as possible, pressing firmly while drawing the iron straight outward from your head to achieve a flat, smooth finish, says Moticka. Step 4: Mist with shine spray.

Forget the bags, the shoes and the jewelry. For the nail polish obsessed, the best

accessory for fall is lacquer. So what shades generated the most buzz at fashion week? Think deep, dark variations of red and navy offset by cool tones of minimalist white and beige. The bigger moments of drama belonged to pop-art effects and touches of texture (leather nails!) worn in an unexpected way. Read ahead for a look at this season’s stand-out trends!

1. Pigmented Gemtones – Rich plums and inky navies packed a gem-toned punch on the runway.

2. Hi-Tech Femme – Posh metallic nails contrasted with neutral clothing and give silk and wool sateens an industrial, urban sheen. These high shine nails in gold and silver were seen on the runway covering the full nail or edging a creamy French manicure.

3. Sugared Neutrals – Creamy nude and lilac tones were a soft look on the runway for a clean and sophisticated finish

4. Leather & Lace – Nail art was all the rage backstage at Fashion Week, but this type nail art was all grown up. Leather and lace was used in an edgy way at The Blonds (actual leather nails in luxe silver, high shine copper and jet black) and Joy Cioci, where black fishnet-inspired lace decorated the edge of the nail for a sexy spin on the French Manicure.

5. Whimsical Nail Art – From hypnotic swirls at Nicole Miller inspired by Jimi Hendrix to the hand painted Phillipe Blond helmet heads at The Blonds and “Flirty Flower” bright tulip nails at Rachel Antonoff, nail designs were colorful and expressive on the runway. - Courtesy of Sarah Howard of Beauty Banter and CND

Futuristic Eyes

Red is always right for fall but the most captivating looks featured a deep mulled-wine stain with rich

chocolate undertones. Finishes ranged from creamy matte to high patent-leather gloss, all offset by

perfect skin for contrast.

Makeup artists went Mad Max backstage applying sci-fi grease paint around the eyes at Prada and smudging away with black kohl at Marc Jacobs.

While you might not choose to go to such extremes, you can push the edge a little more than usual with

dramatically dark carbon black liners applied in thick strokes and saturated eye shadows swooped

beyond the outer corners to accentuate your gaze.

71

Page 72: Vertigo Magazine: Vol. 1

Defined Brows

With all the backward glances made to retro elegance this season, it ’s no wonder that beautifully strong brows continued to draw attention. Play up your shape by feathering on pencils and shadows to accentuate the arch — and just for fun, maybe

even add a few.

Fresh Faces

Undone skin is usually reserved for spring, but it also made a surprise appearance on the fall runways. Makeup artists experimented with monochromatic contouring with nude tones at Valentino, fresh and inventive pops of lipstick on the cheeks at Michael Kors, and dewy complexions aplenty at Vera Wang.

72

Page 73: Vertigo Magazine: Vol. 1

Smokey Browns

Fashion loves to reinvent black, and judging by the array of browns used backstage, it ’s the new, well

you know. The beauty of this smoldering shade is its versatility — it can be layered on for more or less intensity and suits all complexions. Try rimming your

eyes with anything from khaki to mocha, then blurring it out for a rich look. – Courtesy of Harper ’s Bazaar

TOXIC BEAUTYWhen it comes to beauty products, the effects of the ingredients they contain can be

more than just skin deep. The cosmetics industry uses thousands of synthetic chemicals in its products, in everything from lipstick and lotion to shampoo and shaving cream. Many of these substances are also used in industrial manufacturing processes to clean industrial equipment, stabilize pesticides and grease gears. And we can all agree that an ingredient that effectively scours a garage floor may not be the best choice for a facial cleanser. In the U.S., major loopholes in federal law allow the cosmetics industry to put thousands of synthetic chemicals into personal care products, even if those chemicals are linked to cancer, infertility or birth defects. At the same time as untested chemicals have been steadily introduced into our environment, breast cancer incidence has risen dramatically. Following are some of the chemicals commonly found in cosmetics and what they do to us.

beauty WATCH

Page 75: Vertigo Magazine: Vol. 1

ParabensParabens are a group of compounds widely used as an antifungal agent, preservative and antimicrobial in creams, lotions, ointments and other cosmetics, including underarm deodorants. They are absorbed through the skin and have been identified in biopsy samples from breast tumors.

AluminumAluminum is found in some underarm antiperspirants. Like cadmium, aluminum is a metal that mimics estrogen and can also cause direct damage to DNA. Studies have not shown a direct causal link to breast cancer risk, but breast tissue has been shown to concentrate aluminum in the same area where the highest proportion of breast cancers are originally diagnosed. Ethylene OxideEthylene oxide is found in fragrances and is commonly used to manufacture popular brands of shampoo. It is classified as a known human carcinogen and is one of the 48 chemicals that the National Toxicology Program (NTP) identifies as mammary carcinogens in animals.

Mineral OilThis commonly used petroleum ingredient coats the skin just like plastic wrap. The skin's natural immune barrier is disrupted as this plastic coating inhibits its ability to breathe. The skin's ability to release toxins is impeded by this 'plastic wrap,' which can promote acne and other disorders. This process slows down skin function and normal cell development causing the skin to prematurely age.

FD&C Color PigmentsMany color pigments cause skin sensitivity and irritation. Absorption of certain colors can cause depletion of oxygen in the body and even death according to A Consumer's Dictionary of Cosmetic Ingredients. Debra Lynn Dadd says in Home Safe Home, "Colors that can be used in foods, drugs, and cosmetics are made from coal tar. There is a great deal of controversy about their use, because animal studies have shown almost all of them to be carcinogenic."

Imidazolidinyl Urea and DMDM Hydantoin:These are two of the many preservatives that release formaldehyde (formaldehyde-donors). Formaldehyde can irritate the respiratory system, cause skin reactions and trigger heart palpitations. Exposure to formaldehyde may cause joint pain, allergies, depression, headaches, chest pains, ear infections, chronic fatigue, dizziness and loss of sleep. It can also aggravate coughs and colds and trigger asthma. Serious side effects include weakening of the immune system and cancer. Nearly all brands of skin, body and hair care, antiperspirants and nail polish found in stores contain formaldehyde-releasing ingredients.

Always read the labels on skin care and other beauty products. It can be difficult to decipher the labels, but gets easier over time. In general, the more chemical sounding ingredients you see on a label, the worse the product is for your skin. Look for natural ingredients in all your beauty products. Here are some good ingredients to look for:

Those to include:Alfalfa extract is a natural cleanser. It contains vitamins A, B, C, D and E. You will often find it in skin cleansers and moisturizers.

Almond oil is high in fatty acids. This ingredient is excellent for dry skin. It soothes and moisturizes dry and sensitive skin.

Aloe soothes and hydrates the skin. It is used in skin and hair care products. Aloe is often used in products intended to relieve sunburn.

Ascorbic Acid contains vitamin C. This antioxidant is an excellent skin nutrient. It is often found in creams and moisturizers.

Biotin is a member of the vitamin B group. This ingredient is excellent for treating dry skin. Biotin is found in a variety of skin care products and is used in dandruff shampoos.

Carotene is an antioxidant that is often used in cosmetics and skin care products. It is derived from red and orange plants and vegetables....

A GIRL’S GUIDE TO GORGEOUS SKIN

Drink more water (and more and more…): Drink at least 1.5 to 2 liters of water a day to help clear skin, alkalize and hydrate the body. Bored? Add some lemon for a zest of healthy flavor.

Eat Greens: A healthy green plant-based diet that floods the body with vitamins, minerals, phytonutrients and enzymes. The greener and cleaner your diet; the healthier your cellls will become and stay. You will quickly notice an amazing youthful glow, less acne, and more elasticity.

Ditch The Toxins: Try to use chemically free products and stay clear of absorbing daily toxins such as tobacco, alcohol and fatty processed food. Overtime, these chemicals stockpile, overworking your liver causing serious problems in the future.

Keep Moving: Improve your body’s circulation by exercising regularly. Try hitting the gym at least 3 times a week – or take up pilates or yoga. Your body will thank you for it and you’ll notice better sleep and more energy filled days.

Brushing isn’t just for your hair: Exfoliating your skin gets rid of dead skin cells and speeds up the lymphatic system, which over time, helps de-puff, get rid of toxins and decrease inflammation.

Your body works from the inside out. Keep the inside clean and the rest will

The ethically-made collections are the epitome of a sort of freshly laundered but simple old-school elegance. “A wedding dress all made in crochet. Soft cottons. Hand made cardigans and trousers. Vintage towels with original prints directly from Los Angeles. Leather bags from South America. Large embroidered scarves from India. Small charming jewels coming from selected flea markets.” The shop smells like lemongrass, fresh pine and lavender, and so does its owner. With one or two of her four children and her dog often in the shop, Valerie exudes earth mother beauty and good vibes. EAT paris

When  a famous chef opens a restaurant, be it in Paris, New York or Kansas City,

expectations always run high. Yannick Alleno’s new outpost, Terrior Parisien – open since March in an über cool space in the Latin Quarter – was certainly no exception.

térroirPARISIEN

82

Page 83: Vertigo Magazine: Vol. 1

The concept. Unlike top foodie cities in the U.S., the locavore movement has been slower to catch on in Paris. Alleno has been steadily changing that, first by introducing a wildly popular regional menu at Le Meurice, then by publishing a book on the topic. Now comes his bistro offering a menu of refreshed traditional Parisian recipes with goods sourced from the Ile-de-France region.

The food. Alleno’s dishes are fresh and exciting. Highlights include navarin printanier d’agneau (a classic for spring) served with crisp, sweet baby veg and a handsome sauce. Soup lovers (my husband is a devotee) will love Alleno’s take on the classic onion and his sumptuous potato-leek.

The table. As recently as May, nabbing a table at Terroir Parisien without reserving was quite doable. It ’s a large airy space and dining before 9:00 P.M. meant you could count on a table. No more. (Word is out, so go sooner rather than later).- Paige Bradley Frost Photos: Dider Gauducheau

Club Silencio is one

of Paris’s go to spots if you’re looking for film-noir fun as the sun goes down in France’s capital. Modeled after David Lynch's Los Angeles noir classic Mullholland Drive, Silencio is equipped with rather surreal interiors conjured by the director himself. Fittingly, le resistance literally haunts the walls

here, as 142 rue Montmartre was once home to L'Aurore, publishers of Emile Zola's defiant J'Accuse. The enigmatical corridors now contain a performance stage, a cinema, an art library, and reflective dance floor, where all manner of scandalous and unholy activities are virtually assured to unfold. Silencio will be members-only club during the early hours, and open to the public after midnight.

six PRODUCTS

French women are always envied for the mere fact that they look good – no matter what. Although known for their low-maintenance look, their beauty routine is quite the opposite. Products are chosen with precaution and the French never pass up a beauty product for the price tag. It ’s all about quality, a great routine and patience…lots of it. french women

can’t live without…

This product has been around for 20 years. French filles use this fast-absorbing oil to moisturize and protect just about everything: face, neck, cuticles, legs, and even their hair, which is awesome because it smells so fantastic, just like summer at the beach. Put it on the apples of your cheeks for a healthy-looking glow, or come holiday cocktail dress season, opt for the shimmery gold version to add some luster to bare shoulders. Nuxe Huile Prodigieuse: $20.50

In France, women aren't intimidated by face oils, which are actually non-irritating and deeply penetrating. This elixir is a part-toner, part-serum mist of essential oils and plant active ingredients. It smoothens the skin, tightens the pores, and provides an instant burst of radiance, as it stimulates microcirculation. Carla Bruni is a devotee of this spray version—she personally called the company's founder to rave about it. Caudalie Beauty Elixir: $46 at Sephora

French "It Girl" Clémence Poésy is a fan of this multi-purpose ointment that repairs cracked skin. Even though it has achieved cult status in the U.S., the product is still only available overseas. Luckily there's Calendula Ointment, a treatment from the same company that offers similar skin-healing benefits. Beauty trick: rub on lips before going to bed. In the morning, you will have a pucker to die for. Homeoplasmine: $7

85

The French woman sticks to a rather scrupulous and

preventative skin and body care routine. This means that she has weekly facials, regular lymphatic drainage massage and treatment (great for removing cellulite,) and religiously takes her makeup off each night. To stay beautiful, the French woman tries to eat a balanced diet that will include lots of fresh fruit and vegetables - as well as organic produce from the market. Hydration is also an important key to a French woman’s beauty.

You will always hear a French woman say never use tap water on your face due to drying chlorine and bacteria. Instead, French women swear by spring water. When skin is dehydrated, cracked, or just crying out for moisture, mist it with this feather-light spray. It contains thermal spring water to soothe and saturate it. This spray is perfect on a hot day or after working out as well. Avene Eau Thermale: $20

Just like no French make-up artist's kit is without it, no French woman’s top shelf is without this amazing product. Simply wipe a soaked cotton pad over the face, eyes and lips for bare-skin perfection. Hands down, the easiest and fastest way to remove make-up, refresh your skin and give it a youthful glow. You will be throwing out any other product faster than you can say “aurevoir!”. Bioderma Créaline: $20

It’s hard for something as utilitarian as lip balm to feel special, but Nuxe’s Reve de Miel Lip Balm is incredibly luxurious. Thick without being sticky, this healing salve instantly eliminates any dryness. With Vitamin C and antioxidants from grapefruit essence help to protect your delicate lips. Mega-moisturizers like Acacia honey and shea butter soften skin and seal in moisture, while sweet almond, calendula, and Chilean rose oils work to heal and repair. Nuxe Reve de Miel: $11

parisESSENTIALS

When headed on vacation, it ’s always good to

have a heads up of what to bring, whether you’re going cross-country or across the globe. Paris is known as one of the fashion capitals of the world, but tourists can sometimes find themselves in a fashion rut by not bring the essentials necessary to get you through your Parisian get-away with both style and comfort. Vertigo has put together all the tips you need to know when preparing to head out to the French capital, along with some great wardrobe ideas…

Page 88: Vertigo Magazine: Vol. 1

Neutrals are Key - If you're from a climate that sports a lot of floral prints and bright colors, aim for the subdued approach. You can never go wrong wearing black in Paris - in fact, you'll notice that this is the color scheme that most of the locals live in. You've heard it all before - black is slimming, always in style, and versatile - a flattering black sweater or pants/skirt can be dressed down for daywear and easily spruced up for a night on the town. As a traveler, black has the added benefit of not showing the "wear and tear" of a trip. And if you can't stand wearing black, try other neutral colors - like beiges, browns, and creams.

88

Page 89: Vertigo Magazine: Vol. 1

Leave Leisure Wear at Home - Leave your hoodies and matching sweatpants, white tennis shoes, shorts and bright colored nylon windbreakers at home. The comfortable clothes that suburban American women live-in, are not seen on Parisians outside of their homes. There's a lot you can't get away with here - wearing a tracksuit and flip-flops to the post office is a form of disrespect. Bottom line: Dress your age and dress nicely - you'll be rewarded with better treatment in cafés, shops and restaurants Make a Statement with Accessories and Scarves - Don't over pack with too many outfits. Bring basics that travel well and that you can mix and match. Dress up your outfits with accessories - necklaces, earrings and scarves. Scarves are ubiquitous in Paris - Parisian women know they are a quick and easy way to pull an outfit together. Wear Comfortable Shoes, Not White Tennis Shoes - Paris is a city made for walking and you'll be on your feet more than you can imagine. If you want to blend in, leave your white/tennis running shoes at home. We know that these shoes are comfortable and built for mileage, but white tennis shows are the tell-tale sign of the "American Tourist". Truthfully, when we see white shoes in a sea of black, we know that it is a fellow American in Paris. Unfortunately, many unsavory types that prey on tourists also know that this is the case. Don't make yourself an easy mark for pickpockets - leave the white tennis shoes at home. Remember: Paris is not the city to "break-in" a new pair of shoes.

Paris women are always chic,

comfortable and accessorized.

89

Page 90: Vertigo Magazine: Vol. 1

Jeans are OK - Today, denim is a growing Paris trend. Jeans are everywhere - upscale restaurants have even lessened their dress codes to admit designer jean clad customers. Before you toss your favorite Levi's in a suitcase, remember that we're talking about Paris, and the jeans you see on Parisians contain certain stylistic elements - dark, slim fit "skinny jeans", or slight flare - paired with boots or ballet flats for daytime walking and stilettos for going out at night.

90

Don't Worry About Your Hair and Make-Up - A bonus about visiting Paris is that you don't need to obsess over your hair and make-up. It seems like a contradiction in terms, but Parisian woman tend to favor the "au natural" look more than their American counterparts. Hairstyles are more unstructured and air dried. You'll see more long hair pulled back into a casual chignon than elaborately straightened and styled like in the US. Make-up is minimal with an emphasis on glowing skin. To quote Laura Mercier, the French creator of a line of cosmetics, "French women are not flashy. They must be subtle. The message must not be, 'I'm spending hours on my face to look beautiful.” Parisian cosmetologists caution restraint by choosing one area to highlight - shadowed eyes mean neutral or no lipstick, wear lipstick and keep your eyes untouched, and let your natural skin show by wearing minimal foundation and little blush. For an example, pick up a copy of French Elle and be amazed to see unairbrushed models with minimal make-up. So, "embrace your inner beauty" and spend your time exploring Paris instead of styling your hair and making-up your face.

One  thing is certain, you can't go to Paris and skip the Marais. It's very similar in feel to the

West Village in Manhattan, with a different architecture of course, but the small crooked medieval streets are alive with bars, restaurants, hotels, high and low fashion boutiques, trendy shops, hip designers, old fashioned bread shops, jewelry, wine shops, fashionable art galleries and museums all crammed into one small area.

The Rue St. Antoine in the center is also great. You can walk along the shops and drool at the pastries. The little square of St. Catherine is amazing - go at night and you will be amazed at the atmosphere in this small square ringed by old apartments and giant trees. There are some nice little bars and restaurants strung around the perimeter of the square where you can sit at night and eat outside or just have a glass of wine.

The Marais is also known for its numerous art galleries and design shops. A bit like Soho in Manhattan, the high end art tends to lean toward the more conceptual schools influenced by post-modernism and the success of Brit-Pop. There are many high end stores such as Sandro, Zadig & Voltaire and The Kooples, many vintage stores such as the widely known Freep-Star and Pretty Box, bistros and cafés, bars and pubs and much more more…don’t forget to grab a falafel plate at L’As du Fallafel!!

Alexa Chung, TV host,

DJ, and reluctant it-girl, can now add another title to her ever-expanding closet of theoretical hats: Author. According to Vogue UK, the British style icon is set to release her first title under Penguin Books next September, just in time for back-to-school (or, more feasibly, fashion month) reading. Will you pick up her book?

Speaking of Anna Dello Russo, look out for: Maison Martin

French designer Isabel

Marant has a knack for giving women exactly what they want. From edgy cowgirl boots to statement jumpers, season after season her collections are packed with 'It' items that make fashionistas around the globe go week at the knees. But no piece has caused as much of a style scrum as her suede wedge trainers. 'I knew when I did them that they would be a hit, but to this point, no.' So how did she come up with the idea? 'It ’s something I did since I was a teenager. I would cut up cork and put pieces of cork into my sneakers because I wanted to look taller. To have a little heel in it makes a difference, it gives your legs–I mean, I know women, I am a woman, so I know what we are searching for!” 96
