Vertical Vibration Isolator Small (VVIS)

The Vertical Vibration Isolator Small can accommodate any camera package: from 5 - 220 lb The compact design of the Vertical Vibration Isolator Small allows it to be mounted on any dolly with a standard Mitchell mount.

Chapman’s Vertical Vibration Isolator Small protects your shot from the jarring effects of an uneven terrain.

Using a system of springs and hydraulic dampeners, the Vertical Vibration Isolator Small smooths out the small rhythmic vibrations of a traveling shot as well as dampening those sudden, unexpected jolts that a stone or a pot-hole can produce.

In many situations, the Vertical Vibration Isolator Small eliminates the need for dolly track.

Changing the Springs begins by having an assistant lift the complete camera package (payload) and removing the rear Quick Release Pin.

NOTE: The Spring must be fully collapsed in order to pull the Quick Release Pin. Lengthening the tie-rod may be necessary (by turning the turn buckle). The goal is to be sure there is no tension on the Spring that is being removed.

Adjusting the Springs Vertical Vibration Isolator Small (VVIS)

In this photo, a weight is being used to simulate a camera payload.

Adjust both turnbuckles until the leveling rods are parallel to the base (assuming level head is level).

Close up view of turnbuckle.

Mounting the Vertical Vibration Isolator Small (VVIS)

A 1/4-28 socket head serves as a key and may be removed if necessary with a 3/16” Allen wrench, which is included in the tool kit.

This view of the underside of the Vertical Vibration Isolator Small shows the key (socket head) being removed.

Mount the Vertical Vibration Isolator Small to the Leveling Head. Rotate to a comfortable position and attach the Castle Ring from below.

Changing the SpringsVertical Vibration Isolator Small (VVIS)

Before attaching the rear end of the spring, be sure the 2 piece bushing set is installed.

The use of heavy grease will retain the split bushings in place.

It is important to check this feature during all changeovers.

Lift up the complete payload package. It is recom-mended that 2 people perform this step. Line up the rear spring and attach the rear Quick Release Pin. Adjust the turnbuckle as described in the Spring Setup section of this User Guide. (page 8)

Mounting the Horizontal Vibration Isolator

Mount the Horizontal Vibration Isolator so that the ”F” (marked on the underside) is pointing forward. (Pointed toward the front of the dolly or in the direction of travel).

Using a Horizontal Vibration Isolator enhances the performance of the Vertical Vibration Isolator Small.

Used in combination, vibrations in both the horizontal and vertical planes are eliminated.

14

Removing Center Spring Vertical Vibration Isolators

To remove the center spring, start with a complete mounted camera package setup.

Remove tension on the center spring by lifting up on the fork and pulling the quick release pin.

It may be necessary to shorten the tie-rod with a 1/2” wrench (on the center spring only). This will allow removal.

15

Removing Center Spring Vertical Vibration Isolators

Now rotate and slide the spring off the bushing and remove.

Next, push down on the fork until the tie-rod is free to swing up.

NOTE: Place all removed parts in the case to avoid loss of parts.

16

Mounting the Vertical Vibration Isolators

NOTE: Use 3” riser with Vibration Isolator Medium to clear the leveling rods when mounting horizontal.

Before the Vibration Isolator is set up, ensure that the base is level and is on level ground. This will ensure that you get equal vertical travel upward and downward.

Mount the Vibration Isolator fork with a castle nut.

Mount the Gimbal for under slung remote heads and fluid heads.

Mount standard Horizontal Vibration Isolator on the Vertical Vibration Isolator Medium for over slung manual heads or fluid heads.

Gimbal Vertical Vibration Isolators

When adjusting the dampening on the gimbal, always adjust the compression and tension equally on each dampener. For typical payloads, all 4 adjustment knobs should be set to position 3 (three clicks from closed).

When the camera package is mounted, a good rule of thumb in checking the dampening is to pull the camera in any direction and let go. It should return to center in approx. 1 second without swinging past center.

In some Gyro setups less dampening may be necessary (0.7 seconds).

NOTE:NEVER Use More Dampening Than Is Absolutely Necessary.

18

Adjusting the Springs and Dampening SystemVertical Vibration Isolators

Using 1/2” open end wrench adjust all three tie rods attached to springs evenly until the Vertical Vibration Isolator fork is level. We recommend 2-5 flats at a time. Be sure to count each turn so that all the springs are pulled evenly.

How to Adjust

Cross section view of typical nut.

FLAT

Set up the camera package complete, and have it mounted on the Vertical Vibration Isolator before making any adjustments to the spring tension or dampening controls.

With the complete camera payload attached, start with the spring adjustments. Payloads of 80-110 lbs. could require the removal of the center spring. To remove the center spiring, see spring removal - pages 11-12.

These Tie Rods must be adjusted evenly.

19

Adjusting the Springs Vertical Vibration Isolators

Check that the springs fully collapse before the dampener. To do this, one or two people can lift the fork until the spring is fully compressed. If the shock cylinders collapse first (before springs are fully compressed), loosen up the tie-rods. See below to avoid damage to the components (continued on next page).

A fully collapsed spring looks like this.

About 1/8” - 3/16” of the damp-ening rod should be showing when the spring is fully col-lapsed.

NOTE:

Page 11: Vertical Vibration Isolator · The Vertical Vibration Isolator Small can accommodate any camera package: from 5 - 220 lb The compact design ... the 2 piece bushing set is installed

Adjusting the Shock Dampeners Vertical Vibration Isolators

Use the knob to increase/decrease dampening.

Turning the knob Clockwise closes the valve and eliminates the dampening effects of the shock absorber.

Use the minimum amount of dampening possible. Too much dampening will allow higher frequency vibrations to reach the camera. Under extreme off-road conditions it may be necessary to increase compression adjustments. Adjust by rotating in the counter clockwise direction. This will make the dampener stiffer all the way through the compression stroke (vertical travel up and return). There are 10 click positions in the clockwise direction. The setting chosen must match on both shock dampeners. Click 2 positions on each and test the dampening effect.

NOTE:Remember NEVER Use More Dampening Than Is Absolutely Necessary.
