Description: Riskydecisionmakingisaverytimelytopicofresearchinpsychology,economics,andneuroscience.Adolescentstendtoengageinriskybehaviorseveryday,includingsubstanceabuse,riskydriving,andunprotectedsex.Adolescentsareatthepeakofphysicalrobustness,yettheyarealsoatanelevatedriskofdeath,injury,anddisease.Researchhasshownthatadolescentsdifferfromadultsinemotionalreactivity,motivation,andself‐regulation,butsubstantialambiguitiesremainabouthowthesefactorsdetermineadolescents'riskydecisionmaking.
Wearecurrentlyinvestigatingriskydecisionmakinginbrainandbehavior.Fuzzy‐tracetheorypredictsthatpeopleengageingistandverbatimprocessingsimultaneously,butthatthetendencytoengageingistprocessingincreaseswithdevelopment.Weemployamodificationoftheclassicframingtasktounderstandhownetworksinthebrainareinvolvedinrisktakinginadolescentsandadults.Usingthistask,wefindthatcueinggistversusverbatimprocessingcanaffectriskychoicepreference.Further,wedemonstratethatgistprocessingcanbeobservedinthebrain,asthereareseveralregionsofinterestintheparietallobesforwhichtheframingeffectismostpronouncedinthegistconditionandleastpronouncedintheverbatimcondition.Behaviorandbrainactivationcanbemodulateddependingonhowriskychoicesarepresented,whichhasextremelyimportantimplicationsforthemodifiabilityofriskybehaviorinadolescence.

Description:Laboratoryproceduressuchasdissectionsareofteneasiertoshowthantodescribe.However,demonstratingtoaclassistime‐consumingand,whenprocedurestakeplaceunderamicroscope,difficult.Homemadevideocansolvethisproblemusingreadilyavailableconsumer‐leveltechnologyandsoftware.Whetheryourvideoisquick‐and‐dirtyorpolished,itcansavetimeandimprovestudentperformanceinthelab.Thissessionwillcoversomeofthetechnologyandsuggestwaystopolishhomemadevideo.Topicswillincludeplanningavideo,imagequality,lighting,editing,narrationandsubtitles,anddeliveryonmultipleplatforms.Therewillbetimeforparticipantstosharetheirexperiencesandaskspecificquestionsregardingvideosthattheymightwishtomake.

GeiselSchoolofMedicineatDartmouthCollegeDr.YehreceivedthePh.D.degreeinCellBiologywithconcentrationinNeurosciencefromtheUniversityofTexasSouthwesternMedicalCenteratDallas.Hisresearchinterestsareintheneurosciences.Specifically,hisresearchrevolvesaroundissuesrelatedtothe
functionsofneurotransmittersystemsandneurotrophinsinthenormalanddiseasedbrain.Thereareseveralresearchprogramsongoinginhislaboratory.OneoftheresearchprogramsinvestigatestheroleofGABAasadevelopmentalneurotransmitterinregulatingneuronalmigrationandsynapseformationatembryonicstagesofcorticogenesis.Thisprojecthasbeenextendedtoexaminingtheenduringeffectsofmaternalethanol(alcohol)consumptiononbraindevelopmentintheoffspring.Anotherresearchprogramseekstodelineatethecellularandmolecularmechanismsunderlyingalteredsynapticplasticitywithintheseptohippocampalsystem,includingtheactionsofneurotransmittersandneurotrophins.Alloftheresearchprojectscombineexperimentalapproachesthatincludeelectrophysiology,neuroanatomy,biochemistryandmolecularbiology.Overall,theseprojectshavelaidthegroundworkforgraduatestudentsandpostdoctoralfellowstodevelopandelaborateontheirownresearchinterestsanddirections.Dr.Yehhastaughtactivelyinthemedicalschoolandgraduateschoolcurricula,andhasleadershiprolesindirectinggraduateeducationandtrainingattheinstitutionalandnationallevels.

Description:ThisplenarysessionwillbefocusedonbestpracticesandinnovativeapproachesthatwerehighlightedbyCNDPwhenmakingselectionsfortheUndergraduateNeuroscienceProgramsoftheYearawards.Oneareaoffocuswillbeonthepeer‐mentoringsystem,includingwhatworksandwhatdoesnotwork.Aspecialsegmentofthisapproachwillbedevotedforstartinganintroductiontoresearchlabforfreshmenandhowthegoalsofthisclasscouldworkintothepeer‐mentoringsystem. Closelyrelatedtothepeer‐mentoringmodel,willbeapresentationontheTEAMapproachthatisusedinalargerschoolenvironment.Includedinthisforumwillbeadiscussiononsomeofthepoliticalproblemsassociatedwithrunninganundergraduateprograminauniversitythatistryingtotransitionfromteaching,asitsprimarymission,intoaresearchuniversity.Finally,anopendiscussionwillallowparticipantstoshareordiscussnewideas—bothmagicalandnot.
