From the Directors Desk

Special Needs Registry Warm weather & severe storms can go hand in hand. Hopefully you were able to catch last month’s TRIAD presentation the Verona Fire Department did on emergency management. It’s a good time to again bring up the special needs registry with Dane County Emergency Management. It is voluntary; those who are elderly, frail or disabled not living in a facility are eligible. Emergency personal has access to the registry, and in the event of a disaster, first responders would be alerted that you have special needs such as oxygen, insulin, in a wheel chair, etc. If you would like to be on this registry, please let me know. Community Paramedics Speaking of first responders, don’t forget that the Community Paramedics will be here the 4th Monday of the month to check your blood pressure and medication checks from 10:30-12:00. Veterans Memory Book Project I will be working on putting together a book to honor all Veterans in the Verona area, past and present. I’d like to get as much information on as many Veterans as possible along with a photo(s). I will have a form for you to fill out on yourself or your loved one, and would like to begin this project this fall. Stay tuned for more information. A few riddles to keep you thinking ~

SURVEY Please take a moment to complete the

survey found on page 15. Your input & suggestions

help to make the Senior Center a better place.

IN THE NEWS

Verona Press recently published an article about

Becky Losby. They called Becky a “Case Manager

on Wheels” because she travels to local senior

apartment complexes and the Verona Public

Library to share information about senior center

programs and services. Check the calendar to see

when she will be stopping by your building!

RSVP DRIVERS

RSVP Drivers perform a great service to the

community, delivering meals and taking

Verona seniors to medical appointments. If you

are interested in volunteering as an RSVP driver,

please contact Alasa Wiest at 845-7471. If you

would like to receive rides to medical

appointments, call Becky Losby at 845-7471 to

register for this service.

RSVP RIDERS If you are already using RSVP

drivers for your medical appointments, please

remember to call in your ride request at least 2-3

business days in advance. (We are closed on

Saturday & Sunday, so calling on Friday for a

Monday appointment is unlikely to result in a ride.)

Also, if you need to cancel a scheduled ride, please

call as soon as possible to let us know so that the

driver can be reassigned to help another person.

ACCREDITATION REVIEW We need a

handful of volunteers to review and provide input

on our re-accreditation application to Wisconsin

Association of Senior Centers. Let Mary know if

you are interested.

SPRING IS HERE AND SO ARE SEASONAL ALLERGIES. An allergy is when your immune system reacts to a foreign substance, called an allergen. It could be something you eat, inhale into your lungs, and inject into your body or touch. This reaction could cause coughing, sneezing, itchy eyes, a runny nose and a scratchy throat. In severe cases, it can cause rashes, hives, low blood pressure, breathing trouble, asthma attacks and even death. There is no cure for allergies, but you can manage them with prevention and treatment. More Americans then ever say they suffer from allergies. It is among the country’s most common, but overlooked, diseases. Doctors are able to help diagnose some allergies if you don’t know what is causing your symptoms. Skin testing can confirm many common types of allergies and there is also a specific blood test that can aid in the diagnosis.

Allergy treatment is based on your medical history and can include three treatment types:

Avoiding allergens, medicine options and/or immunotherapy “allergy shots” or allergens

placed under the tongue. The best of these, if possible, is to avoid the allergen. Remove the

source of allergens from your home. You can also reduce your symptoms to airborne

allergens by using a nasal saline rinse daily. Many people don’t take allergy medications

because they don’t think their symptoms are serious. This can result in painful problems

such as sinus or ear infections. Don’t take the risk. There are many safe or over the counter

medications that are effective. Check with your care provider and pharmacist to be sure

there is no interaction with your other medications and that you take the allergy medication

correctly and only for the allotted time.

Fitness Classes

ATTENTION! ATTENTION!

Exercise Class Changes Starting March 1, 2017, several changes to the exercise classes will take effect. There will be much more flexibility for students. You will be able to come and go as you need to, try different classes to find your favorites, and pay only for those classes that you attend. This is how it will work: There will be changes in the class structure:

Students will not have to sign up for an 8 week series. Students will be able to start a class at any point in time. Students can drop in to try out different classes.

Students will have two payment options: Pay $5 per class at the time of the class, regardless of the class you attend. Set up an account and deposit a sum of money into it. When you use your swipe

card to sign in, $5.00 will be deducted from your account. This will minimize the need to carry cash. (Minimum deposit is $25.00, maximum deposit is $100.00)

Students will no longer have to pay for a class they miss. Class fees, which are currently $35 for 8 weeks, or $4.38 per class, will go up to $5.00 per class, an increase of 68 cents per class. We believe that most students will actually find this new system will save them money, because they will no longer have to pay for a class they miss due to illness, vacations, or other causes. We still encourage a goal of a minimum of 10 students per class in order for a class to continue. We hope that these changes will encourage you to explore additional classes, and to start a class when your motivation is high, rather than having to wait for a new series to start.

Verona Historical Society Saturday, May 20 at 10:00 AM at the

Verona Senior Center “Following the Evidence! Excavating Early

Verona Farmsteads”

Over the last year, you may have noticed several big square tarps dotting the landscape along highway 69 as it heads south through Verona. Maybe you've also seen some people digging around in the dirt and wondered what they're up to. Several of our members were just too curious and pulled over to meet these folks...who turned out to be friendly archaeologists from the Wisconsin Historical Society! Join our guest, Wisconsin State Historical Society Archaeologist Paul Reckner, who has logged countless hours studying and reconstructing information related to early Native American and White farmstead settlements along the Highway 69 corridor. It may come as a surprise to learn the wealth of artifacts and evidence found in Verona dig sites related to many periods of human activity here since last glacier.
