Juno History• The Juno Awards are named in honor of Pierre Juneau, who was the very first President of the Canadian Radio-Television and Telecommunications Commission and former President of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. In the early 1970s, Juneau was the architect of the CRTC’s Canadian content regulations which require that a certain percentage of radio and television time be devoted to programming or music which is produced in Canada. This action created a market for Canadian music and fueled the subsequent boom in music production. In 1971, Juneau received a special Juno Award, being named “Canadian music industry Man of the Year.”

• The Juno Award was originally called the RPM Gold Leaf Awards, created by “RPM Magazine” publishers. They were awarded for the first time in 1970. That evening, 250 people showed up at the doors, which was twice the number of people who had actually been invited. Anne Murray had the flu and almost didn’t make it to the ceremony. The name was changed to Juno Awards the following year, simplifying Juneau’s name.

• The ceremony was broadcast on TV for the first time in 1975. CBC had the rights at the time

• Starting in 1964, “RPM Magazine” polled its readers to determine the best artists in Canada, releasing the results in December. From 1970 to 1973, winners of the Juno Awards were announced in “RPM Magazine” prior to the awards night. Starting in 1974, the award winners were not made public until the Juno ceremonies.

HoPPersMany types of bugs and animals hop. There are also hoppers of other sorts: hopper cars on trains, hoppers that are used on farms and people who hop (or maybe they jump) on trampolines! • Usually when we think of insect “hoppers,” grasshoppers and crickets come to mind. These insects from the order Orthoptera have powerful hind legs that allow them to propel themselves long distances. Also noteworthy about the order Orthoptera (sounds a little like opera, right?) is that these insects “sing” by performing “stridula-tion,” which is the action of rubbing parts of their bodies together. • National Geographic named the wierd frog-hopper bug the “World’s Greatest Leaper” in 2003. The froghopper is a “sap-sucker” that coats plants with foamy spittle – yuk! Froghoppers are about 1/5 of an inch (6 mm) long and can leap an amazing 28 inches (70 mm). That equals 140 times their body length. For a human to leap this distance, in comparison, would mean a long-jump record of 840 feet (256 m)!• According to neurobiologist, Malcolm Bur-rows, of the University of Cambridge, in the United Kingdom, the secret to the long jumps of some insects is a “specialized catapult mecha-nism” that allows the insects to store and then release energy.• Kangaroos, the largest hopping animal, can cover a lot of ground with their hops. When kan-garoos need to go faster, they don’t increase the frequency of their hops, instead they increase the distance for each hop. Kangaroos can bound 25 feet (7.6 m) or more forward and 6 feet (1.8 m) high in a single hop.• The back legs of kangaroos always move in tan-dem except when swimming!• The greater the range of a kangaroo’s hop, the more energy harnessed in their muscles and ten

“HYDE PARK ON HUDSON’’: Rather than merely doing an impersonation, Bill Murray makes a surprisingly credible Franklin Delano Roosevelt in director Roger Michell’s (“Notting Hill’’) portrait of the president during a weekend visit from British royalty (Samuel West, Olivia Colman) at his home in upstate New York. Not only is he concerned with affairs of state, but also with another affair ... specifically, the one he has with a distant cousin (Laura Linney). Olivia Williams and Elizabeth Wilson also star. DVD extras: two “making-of ’’ documentaries; audio commentary by Michell and producer Kevin Loader; deleted scenes. ***

“BOSS: SEASON TWO’’: The sophomore season of the Starz drama series turned out to be its last, but not for any lack of memorable acting by Kelsey Grammer, still ferocious as imperious - and secretly ill - Chicago Mayor Tom Kane. The saga resumes with a shocking attack that has long-range effects on Kane and those closest to him ... though getting close to him is, admittedly, not an easy thing. Notable cast additions for this round include Sanaa Lathan as Kane’s chief of staff and Jonathan Groff (“Glee’’) as a relative newcomer to the political scene. Among other returnees are Connie Nielsen, Hannah Ware, Martin Donovan, Jeff Hephner, Kathleen Robertson and Troy Garity. ***

“INSIDE MEN’’: Initially shown last summer on BBC America, this well-written drama about acting on the evils of temptation casts Steven Mackintosh (“Luther’’), Ashley Walters and Warren Brown as employees of a British money-counting firm who decide to take advantage of their jobs. They plan a robbery that will make them immediately wealthy, but the moral and psychological fallout from the heist turns out to be much more than they bargained for. ***

“ORCHESTRA OF EXILES’’: The roots of the Israel Philharmonic are traced in director Josh Aronson’s documentary, detailing how Polish violinist Bronislaw Huberman spearheaded a four-year effort to spirit Jewish musicians out of Nazi Germany and assemble them into an orchestra. The resulting story is expectedly affecting on a number of levels, including the artistic and emotional ones. ***

“MOOGFEST 2006 LIVE’’: Fans of instrumental music - specifically that performed on the Moog synthesizer - are in for a treat from this event recorded at an appropriate site, New York’s B.B. King Blues Club. Keith Emerson (of Emerson, Lake & Palmer), “Miami Vice’’ composer Jan Hammer and Roger O’Donnell of the Cure are among the featured artists paying homage to Robert Moog and the unique instrument he invented. ***

Tip Weekof th

eCIVIL dIsCoUrse

This week’s Tip is a simple reminder. How civil are you when you converse with other people, especially when it’s online via social media? Canadians are known to be a polite and civil people, something of which we should all be proud. But it seems, with the advent of online social media, that people feel freer to say things on the Internet that they would never say in face-to-face. This weekend, a well-known California pastor lost his 27-year-old son to suicide. This pastor is often a lightning rod for criticism and gets it from all sides. Whether it is fellow Christ-follows who disagree with his methods, success, or theology, OR people of no faith at all who disagree

with him precisely because of his faith. Perhaps some degree of criticism comes with being a well-known public figure (criticism and opposition generally increase at about the same rate as one’s popularity). What really saddened me this weekend were the insensitive online comments written in response to news articles announcing this pastor’s son’s death. From declarations that his faith and God were fake, to atheists declaring vindication for spreading so-called lies, to accusations of child abuse, neglect, possible cover-up, and other ridiculously unsubstantiated claims that only the most vivid imaginations could concoct. The man’s son died - at a very young age - in a very sad way. Why some people feel the need to kick others when they’re down I’ll never understand. I urge you, always ask yourself whether you would stand behind your words if you had to speak them to that person face-to-face.

If not, please don’t mindless key it onto the world-wide web (Internet). Remember who sees what you write. In the case I’ve related, it’s a grieving father, his entire family, his church congregation, his friends and unrelated others who read all the thoughtless internet comments. This pastor, too, is human. You can give this pastor your condolences online at:

www.facebook.com/pastorrickwarren.

rickyreviews~Longhoen Pub~

The atmosphere was highly charged at the Longhorn as the Cancer drive in March for the Vernon hospital was a great success raising well over a much appreciated $4000. The Longhorn Pub has been raising funds for this cause for the past four years now and will most definitely continue to do so in the years to come. We at SocialClubCentral and Tidbits are very happy to help create this awareness and will also continue to aid the Longhorn in this admirable endeavor.

Twelve bands rocked on from noon till midnight and the floor was dancing room only. Auctions were held for the cause on the intermissions and the room once again came alive with excitement and wonderful support. From beginning to end the entire day and evening was most pleasurable.

The Longhorn sports an outside dining patio for those great sunny days. Come play some pool and enjoy tasty pub fare. They have a diverse lunch and dinner menu and I will say that their burgers are truly amazing. The atmosphere is friendly and the service most appreciated.

Bringing Up Father (also know as Jiggs & Maggie, after the two main characters) is a comic about an Irishman named Jiggs, a labourer who wins a million dollars from a sweepstakes. The newly rich Jiggs still longs to revert back to his working class habits and lifestyle, while his wife and daughter desperately want to climb the social ladder and live a life of style and sophistication. Nearly every strip exhibits their frustrated efforts to try and bring Jiggs up to their level of class, hence the title Bringing Up Father. Enjoy this hilarious comic every week, as the newest edition to Tidbits the neatest little paper ever read!

Hagar the Horrible is a shaggy, scruffy, overweight red-bearded viking. He regularly raids England and sometimes France. He is known as the world’s mildest marauder. He talks tough, but he’s really a big hairy kid at heart. Helga, his long suffering better half (wife) is stoic, resourceful, intelligent, and loving - the real brains behind the man. Their son Hamlet is a neat, studious bookworm, the opposite of what his father thinks he should be. And their daughter Honi - 16 years old - is torn between becoming a Valkyrie and finding a husband. There is never a dull moment with the Hagar family! Enjoy this hilarious comic every week, as the newest edition to Tidbits the neatest little paper ever read!

Q: I read in your column about J.C., from Oregon, whose dog was having breathing (problems), which sounds like what our dog used to experience. She’d been leash trained and always pulled. I began to think I was harming her and purchased a harness instead for our Beagle/Pekeapoo mix. Was I right, and could a harness be more useful? - M.W., Canton, IL A: “You’re right that constant pulling on the leash can affect a dog’s breathing, and even create pressure on the eyes (possibly leading to glaucoma),” says veterinary behaviorist Dr. Gary Landsberg, of Thornhill, Ontario, Canada. “A harness or head halter is definitely preferred.” Many veterinarians also believe that “choke collars” can cause or contribute to collapsing tracheas later in life. You could consult a dog trainer or certified dog behavior consultant on how to encourage your dog to walk on a loose leash. Clicker training can be a great tool for this. There are also some excellent video examples teaching techniques at www.abrionline.org.

She became known as Winnie, and a young boy named Christopher Robin Milne re-named his toy teddy bear Winnie after seeing her at the zoo. Christopher’s father wrote the stories about Winnie the Pooh because of this bear cub.

HOPPERS (continued):dons when they touch down. Kanga-roos have tremendous endurance with hearts twice the size of comparable animals and very efficient respiratory systems. • Wallabies are members of the kanga-roo family, just in a smaller package.

They, like their kangaroo cousins are only found naturally in Australia and Papua New Guinea. • Besides their size, the biggest differ-ence between wallabies and kanga-roos is in their mouths. Wallabies live in bushy forests and mostly dine on leaves; kangaroos live in more open

treeless areas and mostly eat grasses. Kangaroos have high crowns of teeth that are curved in their mouths while wallabies have flat teeth with a single cutting tooth on the top front of their mouths. • Rabbits are also fast hoppers, but kan-garoos can go about twice as fast as a

cottontail. An Australian red kangaroo can leap at about 35 miles per hour (56 kph); a rabbit would be left in the dust!• Rabbits, hares, and kangaroo rats are hoppers that can be found in the dry desert regions of the western and southwestern United States.
