About the VCS Mangement PackThe Veritas Cluster Server (VCS) Management Pack for Microsoft System CenterOperationsManager 2007 (SCOM) helps youmonitor VCS components in a SCOMmonitoring environment.

Table 1-1 lists the details of the VCS Management Pack for SCOM 2007.

TheVCSManagement Pack, Symantec.SFW.HA.mp, is a sealedmanagement packthat contains rules to monitor the following VCS components:

Table 1-2 VCS Management Pack: VCS components monitored

DescriptionComponent name

Thehigh availability engine, orHAD, is themainVCSdaemonrunning on each system. It is responsible for building therunning cluster configuration from the configuration files, distributing the informationwhennewnodes join the cluster, responding to operator input, and taking corrective actionwhen something fails. The VCS Management Pack monitorsthe status of the HAD and notifies the user in case of errors.

Engine (HAD)

Group Membership Services/Atomic Broadcast (GAB) isresponsible for cluster membership and clustercommunications. The VCS Management Pack monitors thestatus of the cluster memberships and communications.

GAB

VCS uses private network communications between clusternodes for cluster maintenance. The Low Latency Transport(LLT) functions as a high-performance, low-latencyreplacement for the IP stack, and is used for all clustercommunications. The VCS Management Pack monitors theLLT status.

LLT

The VCS Management Pack monitors the status of the VCSBundled agents and Enterprise agents. The VCS agentframework is a set of common, predefined functions compiledinto each agent. These functions include the ability to connectto the VCS engine (HAD) and to understand commonconfiguration attributes. The agent framework frees thedeveloper fromdeveloping support functions required by thecluster, and instead focus on controlling a specific resourcetype. The VCS management pack monitors the status of thecommon agent framework.

Agents (Agent Framework)

The VCS Management Pack contains the following monitors:

■ VCS for Windows Installation by Symantec

■ VeritasClusterThese monitors are the targets for the rules defined in the VCS ManagementPack.

RulesThe VCS Management Pack rules collect data, such as events, from the logsgenerated by theVCS components. Someof the rules have an associated alert that

VCS Mangement Pack monitoring rulesRules

10

Page 11: Veritasâ„¢ Cluster Server Management Pack Guide for Microsoft

notifies the administrator about the event that triggered the alert. You can viewtheVCS rules after you import theVCSManagement Pack inOperationsManager2007.

See “About monitoring rules” on page 17. for a detailed list of VCS rules.

Alerts and EventsDepending on the rule and the alert that has been set for an event, an appropriatealert is generated when the event is received on the Operations Manager 2007server. An alert notifies the administrator about the event that triggered the alert.

Each rule that generates the alert assigns an alert level that indicates the severityof that event. You can use the severity level to determine the importance of thealert and the necessary steps required to address the alert.

Note: The VCS Management Pack does not include a notification group forautomatic alerts by e-mail. If e-mail alerts are required, you must add the alertprocessing rules manually.

ViewsViews are groups of managed objects that have a commonality, which is definedin the view properties. The views supported by the VCSManagement Pack enableyou to monitor the health of the VCS components within the managedenvironment. These views enable you to assess the state of the required clusternode within the managed environment.

When you import the VCS Management Pack, an item named Veritas ClusterServer by Symantec is created under theMonitoring node in theMonitoring paneof the Operations Manager 2007 console. Expand Veritas Cluster Server bySymantec to see the views supported by the VCS Management Pack.

The following views are supported:

■ Active AlertsThis viewprovides a list of alerts that are openand require action for computersin the All Computers in Management Pack - Symantec.SFW.HA group. Itindicates the current state and severity of those alerts.

■ State ViewThis view provides a real-time, consolidated look at the health of the clusterwithin the managed environment, highlighting the systems that require

attention. It displays the state of the service groups and the resourcesconfigured in the service group. In theMonitoring pane, expandVeritasClusterServerbySymantec and clickStateView. In the StateViewpane, click an item in theVeritasCluster column. The Detail View section displays the status of the service group and theresources. Depending on the state the status is displayed as follows:

■ Healthy:Indicates that the service group and its resources are online onthe node.

■ Warning: Indicates that the service group is partially online on the node.

■ Critical: Indicates that either the service group or the resources in theservice group have faulted on the node.Whenever a service group or a resource in a service group faults on a node,an appropriate alert is generated.VCS management pack has a separate monitor for monitoring the healthof the Veritas High Availability Daemon (HAD). If HAD is not running ona node, then an appropriate alert is generated. This alert stays active untilthe time HAD starts on that node. As soon as HAD starts on the node, thisalert gets resolved automatically. To enable the state view display for VCS,the following rules have been created in VCS for Windows Installation bySymantec:

■ VeritasCluster Service Discovery

■ VeritasCluster State MonitoringThe scripts that these rules invoke, internally use theMOMUtil.exe utility. The MOMUtil utility discovers all the service groups and resources in thecluster and then gathers the state related information for all the servicegroups and resources.

■ AlertsDisplays alerts for the VCS components: Agents, Engine, GAB, and LLT. Thisview provides a list of issues and the current state and severity of each alert. It indicateswhether the alerts have been acknowledged, escalated, or resolved, and also whether a Service Level Agreement has been breached.

■ EventsDisplays events for the VCS components: Agents, Engine, GAB, and LLT. TheEvent view provides a list of events that have occurred on managed servers,a description of each event, and the source of the problem.

GroupsGroups in Operations Manager 2007 are logical collections of objects such ascomputers, hard-disks, or instances of SQL or Exchange. Groups help define onwhich computers the rules are deployed. When you import the VCS ManagementPack, the following groups are created:

■ Veritas Cluster Server by Symantec Computer Group—Includes Windowsservers running Veritas Cluster Server 5.1 or later.

■ All Computers in ManagementPack: Symantec.SFW.HA—Contains all thecomputers that are discovered as a part of other computer groups defined inManagementPack Symantec.SFW.HA

These groups are located under the Groups node in the Authoring pane of theOperations Manager 2007 Console.
